‘Gindi’ in my Jandai language means something good. I put a lot of love, time and effort into the making process to create a small handmade treasure for you, a memento of my beautiful island home. I use as many natural items as I can that I gather from country to enhance the design of each pendant. It is my hope that they bring you joy and connect you to Straddie’s marine life and native flora and fauna. Renata Buziak

iam: a Visual Artist

Renata Buziak is a biochrome artist, researcher and educator working at the nexus of art and science, with a particular interest in nature.

Her photographic research is based on traditional photography and plant life. By bending the rules of photography and letting photographic materials interact with organic matter, Renata developed a unique process of creating art that she calls the biochrome. These art and science processes help her, and others connect with nature and improve their experience and wellbeing.

Renata has a PhD in Visual Art from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University where she has previously taught. Renata’s PhD research focused on Minjerribah’s healing plants in extensive consultations with members of the Quandamooka community.

Renata’s biochromes have been displayed in solo and group exhibitions, nationally and internationally.

I started back in high school when I fell in love with my art teacher. I never took it seriously until a couple of years ago. I was too busy being a parent while running my own business making and distributing films to stand in front of an easel for hours. I paint landscapes and portraits. Images have a way of beckoning me. They pop out and beg for paint. A painting is only successful if it also has that. The phone camera is my constant companion. I scroll my images looking for the one that pops out, sometimes only a fraction of the whole image. I’ve re-discovered oils, having switched to acrylics because of the smell of turps. I love the gloss and silkiness of oils and the way they are so forgiving. I’ve been visiting Minjerribah and living here on and off since I was 5 years old. I paint the Island and love it more with every painting.

iam: a Graphic Designer & Illustrator

I am an emerging doodler and professional graphic designer. I recently completed post graduate studies in environment and sustainability, and a love of nature is reflected throughout my work. I work with pen and paper inspired by botanical illustration with a tendency towards obsessive patterning. It is less my background in design, and more the years spent doodling during lectures that influence my drawings, which embrace an unaffected twodimensional approach and levity in their repetitive patterns and wayward lines.

Anaheke was born in Aotearoa and is a proud Maori / Cook Island woman. She now lives and works on Quandamooka Country with her growing family. She is a contemporary fibre artist and weaver, passionate about nature-based wisdom and cultural practices for community and personal wellness.

Over the past 20 years her weaving practice has helped her develop her own unique style of weaving and accumulated knowledge of fibre plants available for weaving throughout SE QLD / NNSW. She is a seasoned facilitator and loves bringing people together to share craft, culture and connection.

Dale Ruska

iam: a Carpenter & Wood Craftsman

Dale Ruska is a Goenpul Goori, Original First Nation owner of Terangerri (North Stradbroke Island), Moreton Bay and surrounding Islands. He has been a carpenter and wood craftsman for nearly 40 years. He has also been a strong advocate for Original First Nations Sovereignty for many decades.

All of the hand turned and polished wooden bowls and boxes are made at Moopi Moopi Pa (One Mile) on Terangerri. All the timber is collected from around the Island, the blackboy (aka grass tree) has to die and be burnt by several bushfires before it can be used. Other timbers come from dead or fallen trees. All timber collected is done from a First Nations basis, refusing all Government permits.

Blackboy can grow for hundreds or even thousands of years. Cypress can also grow for the same amount of time. Trees on the Island that have a trunk base greater then one meter have been dated over one thousand years old.

The plant environment of Terangerri is unique, known as a wallum environment specific to large sand dune islands off the east coast of Australia. Wallum environments grow in mostly sand, very slowly over long periods of time.

Cath Carroll

iam: a Ceramicist

I live on a curious island that turns its back on the city and looks out over the coral sea. The wonders of my island existence afford me the absolute pleasure of solitude. My island world exists as a vast textural landscape and “me”, a single figure surrounded by it or looking out upon it. My work captures these moments, the grandeur and beauty of the natural world and the elements within it. I wake early each morning to experience beaches, freshly swept by the sea tides or swim late in our inland lake to watch as the day closes its eyes to find peace in the stillness of dusk. Using clay and my unique finds I create work, both decorative and utilitarian, which incorporate my curiosity, the vistas, the moments, and natural elements of this curious island.

Merinda Robbins

iam: a Fine Arts Painter

I am a fine arts painter working in oils on canvas. I studied creative portraiture for many years and have recently turned this interest to the study of the Island’s favourite fauna and people in the landscape. Straddie is such a magical place and inspiration abounds. It is a joy to interpret its many faces through my practice.

NSI Arts & Pottery Club iam:

a Community Club

The North Stradbroke Island Arts and Pottery Group Inc. was established in 1988 to provide opportunities for our local community to participate in arts and cultural activities. Our club fosters appreciation of community by drawing together and supporting members wishing to explore and learn new creative skills within a welcoming and kind environment.

Pottery is the perfect way to integrate self-care and creativity into your daily life, maintain one’s wellbeing, and alleviate anxiety, depression and stress. Pottery connects us back to the earth. Simply playing with clay and stimulating the pressure points in our hands can have therapeutic benefits. Clay also provides a natural way to connect with body and breath – the malleability and immediacy of the material naturally integrates the mind-body connection, something much needed in our often-hectic lives. Take a moment during the Arts Trail to Play With Clay in the old pottery’s garden! It’s fun for all ages. Browse our little shop of pottery goodies.

Val Clark iam: an Abstract Artist

I am an abstract artist who enjoys working in acrylic paint and mixed media.

I work intuitively, so I start my paintings with only a vague intention to express an idea or feeling, and then let the materials lead the way, which brings with it an element of excitement and surprise.

The paintings I make could be described as lively, joyous, a celebration of life perhaps, and sometimes they are wild or whimsical.

My love of and interest in travel influences my work, as does my love of country, I enjoy the freedom to create a body of work with an eclectic mix.

From early childhood creating art has always had a place on the map of my journey in life.

I have studied under some amazingly generous and wonderful artists who have inspired and encouraged me to continue to follow the trail in art.

Henk Dogger

iam: a Blacksmith

I was apprenticed to a blacksmith in 1973 and have worked with metals since. I have recently built a workshop in Goompi on Minjerribah using reclaimed materials from 19th century buildings and have populated it with 19th century tools and equipment that I have carefully and meticulously restored to their 19th century functionality. I handforge items of jewellery and hardware from iron and steel using the 19th century methods and techniques learnt over my 50 working years. I also have trained dozens of apprentices and offer short training sessions where a person, who has probably never made anything with their own bare hands, are taught and guided to hand-make a handforged black-smithed item using the traditional ways.

Dr Karen Thurecht

iam: a Writer

Dr Karen Thurecht PhD has a lifelong interest in cultural belief systems relating to health and medicine. She has taught cultural history at the University of Queensland Medical School and Griffith University School, and supervised Masters and PhD students in Public Health across the country.

Karen is a medical anthropologist who lives in Dunwich and is working on a murder mystery series set in Queensland in the 1880’s, involving an eager young doctor, Hamish Hart. Murder at the Dunwich Asylum was published in December 2020 and Plantation Murders, set on the Logan Sugar Plantations was released in March 2022. Murder in Frog’s Hollow is set in the Brisbane CBD in the infamous ‘red light’ district of the 1880’s and will be released in November 2022.

Andrea Verheesen

iam: a Figurative Painter

Andrea’s work engages with the ideas of inter-generational trauma, genetically inherited memory and the effects of transnational diaspora on aspects of self, individual autobiographical reasoning and the maintenance of complex retrospective self-continuity.

She is particularly interested in how our mothers before us have shaped us both consciously and subconsciously - looking to the memories passed down in our DNA.

Andrea’s art explores this knowledge of your inter-generational self through her series: Mitochondrial Murmurings.

Andrea studied Fine Art at Queensland College of Art and is currently working towards a solo exhibition.

Upcycled Island House

iam: Sustainable Permaculture

The Upcycled Island House is a labour of love by Billa and Chief Lauiti-Kolkr. It is their ‘living art’ as a model of urban permaculture and sustainable living as part of their “Earth School” enterprises. The house is a unique expression of their combined Norse and Papuan heritage and shared building and design skills. The house was renovated to Billa’s passive solar design by gutting the interior to re-aspect toward the north – it is warm in winter and cool in summer without any artificial heating or cooling. Beneath the asbestos and chipboard was a beautiful hardwood house made of forest red gum and ironbark which they carefully recycled into the renovation. Doors and windows were upcycled from demolished houses in Brisbane and Point Lookout. Huge timber Douglas fir beams were salvaged from a cordial factory in Lismore one can see through to the garden from one end of the house to the other. They planted the extensive permaculture garden one month after moving in almost 7 years ago and today, it is full of edible trees and plants. It is a haven for birds and biodiversity, and for Billa and Chief’s daughter Paikea to grow in, to learn about caring for the Earth and for locals to learn about growing their own backyard organic food, through Billas permaculture workshops.

I am a ceramicist and on most days when at home you’ll find me at the wheel, throwing cups, mugs, bowls and dishes, or handbuilding with a variety of clays. I enjoy incorporating delicately beautiful Japanese underglaze transfers or experimenting with different glaze colours and techniques. I have been at the wheel for over 30 years, love to create functional pottery wares and jewellery and never tire of the mystery and uniqueness of glaze combinations which produce intriguing results. I’ve lived at Amity Point (Pulan Pulan) for most of my life and as an avid bushwalker, hiker and photographer, I endeavour to recreate the colours of seascapes, bushscapes and coastlines in my glazing process.

Kathy Townsand

iam: a Gyotaku Artisan

I am a marine scientist in real life, working on big issues such as the human impact on the ocean environment and the conservation of marine species. I practice the art of Gyotaku, which takes an exact impression of a fish or other marine creature I have had the pleasure to learn more about. It is particularly important to me that no animals were caught specifically to make this art. Instead, each animal was either caught for food or was printed after their use from a scientific study. I consider that each print is a small commemoration to an animal who has provided the ultimate sacrifice.

Vicky Tutticci iam: an Artist

I took up painting as a hobby 20 years ago in my retirement and I feel that I am on an exciting journey with my art. I have dabbled with pastels, water colours, acrylics and inks as well as working in ceramics and mosaics. However, my preferred medium for painting is oil paints, which provide more depth, colour and richness. I enjoy painting landscapes and seascapes - mostly realism, some impressionism - but am interested in painting any subject that appeals to me. Presently, I live at Point Lookout and have been coming to Straddie since the ‘60’s. About 10 years ago I enrolled in a painting course with Steve Liesegang a local Straddie artist who tutored me occasionally and recently I have been involved in a Plein air workshop on Straddie with Brisbane artist, Todd Whisson. Daily, the beauty of this island never ceases to amaze me and give me joy. It is this beauty which I strive to capture in the hope that my paintings will give joy to others.

Paula Boo

iam: a Fibre Artist & Musician

Paula Boo, Minjerribah Island songbird, weaves her acoustic soul through her music and her art. She shares stories from her French Canadian, Lebanese and Norwegian songlines to create a universal and uplifting voice that connects with the ancestors, the oceans, and the land in a celebration of culture.

As a Fibre Artist, Paula uses a variety of traditional and innovative techniques, styles, and materials, mainly working with natural fibres such as banana, palm inflorescence and sheaths, Lomandra spp., hemp, raffia and various weedy vines, and sometimes she incorporates rope and other found materials. She is currently exploring the fusion of metal works, ceramics and cyanotype with natural fibres.

Paula continues to explore and learn weaving and basketry techniques from traditional and contemporary weavers, whom she acknowledges as powerful women and men, always with respect for their ancient art forms. It is about sharing her knowledge with others whilst learning new techniques that will enable contemporary expressions of weaving as a vital art form.

Tamara Armstrong

iam: a Professional Artist

I am a professional artist specialising in bold, vibrant paintings of tropical foliage and colourful women of substance. My current series of acrylic on canvas and linen paintings were created and inspired by a recent residency at Minjerribah. My originals also hung at Island Arts Gallery in Goompi (Dunwich) from 2020-2022, finding many homes on the island. I am a permanent resident of Tamborine Mountain in the Gold Coast hinterland and my home studio takes in lush valley and ocean views across to the sand dunes of North Stradbroke Island. I am an award winning artist and my work is highly collectible, hanging internationally in private collections as well as across commercial spaces here in Australia. Paula

Zoë Maskell

iam: an Embroidery Artist

I’m an embroidery artist who works with thrifted clothes, and things that need mending. I have a big love for native flora and fauna, and let my values in conservation guide me to create pieces that are low waste, and help start conversations about our unique Australian wildlife.

My work is comfortable, earthy and bright. I love diving through op shops to find good quality clothes, and embellishing them with bright flits of colour and texture. I especially love to fix things, and believe that you should always be able to identify the species by the art.

Donna Wright

iam: a Professional Artist

I have been a professional artist and art educator for over thirty years, exhibiting nationally and internationally. My current practice seeks to capture the sensitivities of momentary impressions within the natural world. I combine painting mediums, pure pigments, inks, raw earth, ceramics, wood, stone, shell and other found natural forms to produce unique aesthetic expressions. I have working studios based in Venus Bay, Victoria, on Bunurong Country; and Minjerribah, Queensland, on the lands and waters of Quandamooka.

Marie Kennedy Cole

iam: a Visual Artist

I was raised on Straddie and have a deep love of its beauty. Our first home at Point Lookout was a fibro cottage overlooking Main Beach, it was beautiful watching the storms come up from the South and I love painting stormy seascapes.

I have been painting for more than fifty years and will paint anything that inspires me, it might be the wild life of Straddie or florals and of course the ocean.

I paint with oils and one of the things I love about art is the learning process, each painting has its own challenges and joy in its creation.

iam: a Lamp Designer

I make pretty fab lamps. I hand-make the shades and meticulously pair them with their unique base. Many of the bases are upcycled from retro soda syphons, selected pieces driftwood and mangrove, wood carvings, or other pieces that catch my eye. I have a huge range of fabrics to make the shades, but will also custom make shades to order.

I hand paint texiles , tablecloths, beach/ garden umbrellas, and much more. I love colour and believe in the therapeutic value of having colour in our lives. I paint from the nature around me. My work is energetic and playful.

Julie Elliott

iam: an Artisan Soap Maker

I love making soap and am inspired by nature, using only natural colours, pure essential oils, Australian olive oil, coconut, avocado and other vegetable oils. It’s so satisfying to mix and swirl the different ingredients and I’m amazed at the colours that emerge when using mineral clays and plant extracts, creating something unique every time. I have been making cold process soap for two decades now, after years of admiring and buying handmade soaps - and it is still a labour of love.

I’m also committed to minimising our impact on the earth and keep packaging to a minimum, using sustainable materials that enhance the natural beauty of a handmade soap. It continues to be my mission to make a soap that is as environmentally friendly as possible and to keep product prices to a minimum so that they can be enjoyed by everyone.

Koo Ballard

iam: a Watercolour Artist

I am a watercolour artist and I paint miniature seascapes inspired by the beautiful skies and ocean here on my Island home. I only discovered the wonder of watercolour when I was in lockdown on my own in 2020. It was a pure twist of fate, and it has changed my life. Now I paint a new seascape everyday! I turn these paintings into cards, and each and every card is an original painting. They are a gift within a gift and I get such a thrill when people tell me where the cards are being sent and to whom. This journey is evolving and I feel I am slowly developing my own unique style with the magic of watercolour.

Nicole Fraser

iam: a Graphic Artist

I try to stop and enjoy this moment, right now. The little things that can so easily pass us by are what I try to capture in my designs - moments, memories, day dreams, feelings.

The graphics I design for Cactus Crew and screen print onto clothing, fabric and card are little reminders to stop, enjoy right now and not take life too seriously. Wear them, hang them on the wall or gift them to a loved one. I still get so excited seeing other people getting around in one of my tees and I know they get it too. I design and screen print everything right here on Straddie.

Through my work as a graphic designer (Duke & Darling) I aim to bring my client’s visions to life through the use of colour, shape, texture, imagery & typography. I have the pleasure of working with some amazing people, including this year’s Straddie Arts Trail team. Helping others achieve their dream or at least get one step closer to it is one of the best feelings.

Helena has had a deep connection with Minjerribah since birth when her grandparents built their fibro shack at Point Lookout in the early 1950s. Wandering the island bushland and beaches freely for many years has been hugely inspirational, and is evident in Helena’s silversmithing creativity. Penny Gillespie iam: a Silversmith

I am a contemporary jeweller and silversmith working from my workshop Curly Red Dog Studio. I create individually handcrafted pieces inspired by the world around me. My pieces are influenced by the ever-changing colours, textures, light and sounds of the place where I live. In my work I draw on bird and marine life, land formations and plants, the ebb and flow of the tides and the marks left upon the environment through the natural processes of interaction between the water and the land.

I work mainly with silver, enamel and copper and also incorporate other materials that resonate with the pieces I make. I like to pick up interesting bits and pieces from the beaches whilst out walking my dog and often the shapes and forms of tiny things I pick up influence the designs on my bench. I enjoy playing with different techniques and learning new approaches to contemporary jewellery design to incorporate these into my work.

Mandy Roe

a Ceramicist

Mandy’s birthplace Taiwan holds the world’s largest collections of traditional Chinese art and cultural pieces, saved from the destructive communist cultural revolution.

There are over 15,000 official temples in Taiwan, holding works depicting gods, folk heroes, animals, nature, and the beauty of Earth.

Visiting temples as a child awakened her cultural and artistic ancestral threads though master artworks communicating the era, people, places, and circumstance.

When practicing ceramics, though an Australian interpretation, she reflects on her encounters with the masterful beauty of Chinese art works.

Her current works embody the confluence of the ecological state of the Earth and the artisanal spirits of her ancestors; culminating in a journey of observation, expression, learning and self-discovery.

Her works have been selected as finalists for several awards and are exhibited in national and local galleries and private collections.

I feel privileged to walk and spend time within the incredible beauty of Quandamooka Country. The spirit I sense in the ever-changing skies, shoreline, bushland and waters inspires me to capture this in my work. I wish to share my experience of this special place with you.

The works being exhibited during the trail are drawn from the rockpools and cliffs of the shoreline. These ancient rock forms weathered by the wind and sea, with their deep pools offering gifts of hidden shells, are places of contemplation, celebration and play.

I work predominantly in watercolour and pencil on arches paper. Recently I have returned to working on wood, layering the existing grain with watercolour, oils and drawing mediums.

Amber Vicum

iam: a Jewellery Maker

Amber has spent over 20 years honing her craft as a jeweller of seeds, shells and precious stones and continues to evolve her work from the natural materials she collects from the island and around Australia.

Amber is a long-time local resident and regular local marketeer at the Point Lookout Markets. Having grown up in North-East Victoria on the Ovens River, she has always had a strong connection to nature and feels completely at home in the Australian bush. First arriving on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) in 2000 whilst on a trip travelling around Australia in her van, Amber came for a week and ended up staying on and calling the island her home. Amber is passionate about developing unique designs using a variety of seeds and gemstones. Some of the seeds Amber uses in her jewellery creations grow on Straddie and others come with the ocean’s currents and are washed up on onto the beach.

iam: an Artist

I am an island artist using paint and pencil to create images of my visual and sensual relationship with my island surroundings. The ever changing seascapes, rocky headlands, dunal grasses and windswept sands and inland creeks and bay mudflats are my inspirations. I use these landscapes to map the changing seasons and the birds and animals which migrate through it.

Living within the seasons on the island has always been the background of how and when I paint. Following the light and shade on the water, the cloud formations and the animal movements are really the keystones to what I see in my art, expressing the changes in colours and texture with acrylic paint in the summer and then working in pencil and ink for finer detailed work of mapping the rocks, shells and fish on paper in the winter.

I haven’t stopped exhibiting on the island since I left, however I feel very grateful to be part of this considering I am no longer a resident!! Shore birds are what I decided to work on for this Artist Trail, I wanted to hear their calls, feel some of the warmth from the sun on their backs and pull colour from the ocean and surrounding vegetation as I paint in my concrete bunker!

The Headland

iam: a Wild Place

The magnificent headland at Point Lookout is Queensland’s most easterly point and the main topographic feature of Point Lookout. It is composed of high rhyolitic cliffs that jut into the ocean, forming a wild and rugged landscape of steep sided narrow gorges, rock shelves and rocky inlets, the two main ones being North and South Gorge. The 1.2km walking track that follows the top of the cliffs from above Frenchmans Beach is immensely popular and considered a very significant place by locals and visitors. The track winds around North Gorge where far below waves crash onto rocks and further to the east, are panoramic views of the ocean and Whale Rock with its blowhole. Toward the end of the walk, the south gorge, Main Beach and Eighteen Mile Swamp can be seen stretching away to Jumpinpin at the southern end of island. A must do - see abundant wildlife including birds, wallabies and kangaroos, whales, dolphins, turtles, manta rays and more.

Discover Stradbroke is pleased and proud to partner with the Straddie Arts Trail for the next year. The organisers have a long term vision for the trail and we all see it as being a permanent year round offering in the coming years. Our supremely talented island artists provide residents and visitors with a unique window into our diverse community.

“Art” encompasses so many of the activities that island locals embrace to express ourselves be it music, painting, pottery, photography, graphics, weaving, jewellery making, cooking and the list goes on and on. Straddie “artists” originate from all corners of the island community and as such they are a glue that binds us together.

Holidays on the island have always been, and will always be, about family, and it is the ‘unpretentiousness’ that appeals and is most certainly the reason people visit again and again. Developing and supporting our artistic community will strengthen our community in the most sustainable way.

We look forward to seeing you out and about in August as we shine a light on everything that is wonderful about Straddie!
