LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 2017 was a year of growth and progress.

After 26 years we moved to a new location just right down the street in East Los Angeles.

While our new building is not steeped in history, we are creating new history and we are spreading our wings. Settling into our new location allowed us to grow our family of staff and in turn, our capacity to serve more individuals and their families.

As we heard the flood of women’s voices, silenced no more, through the ongoing “MeToo” movement, and the countless number of public figures using their platforms to state their survivorship was eye-opening to so many who were unaware of the prevalence of sexual violence, not only in their own communities, but throughout the country and our world.

Their voices, like our own, called attention to this global health crisis in an attempt to end sexual violence once and for all.

The marches for women’s and immigrants’ rights, in defense of DACA, and the “MeToo" Movement spotlight brought many of the issues we face every day even closer to home.

We were able to partner with a local service union, and heard the voices of night-shift janitors who have experienced a long history of sexual harassment and assault. Our partnership not only enabled the primarily immigrant Latina workers to be trained on prevention and a strategy to end sexual violence in the workplace, supportive services were made available for those who had sustained a history of sexual or domestic violence.

In 2017, I was awarded a sabbatical from the Durfee Foundation. I was honored to not only receive this incredible gift, but also to be a part of the Durfee Family. This was a rare and wonderful restorative time for me and provided a time of valuable professional growth for the leadership team who stepped up during this time of respite to advance the agency.

Our work today is more relevant than ever before. There are many powerful forces working to undo the progress of the past, yet our voices will not be silenced. Rosemarie MAIN HEADLINE

After 10 years of service at ELAWC and 40 years in the field, Rosemarie Mollinedo retired from her position as Clinical Supervisor at ELAWC. Rosemarie has dedicated her life’s work to working alongside vulnerable families facing the most difficult period in their lives. From teen parenthood, substance, abuse, domestic violence, poverty, post-traumatic stress disorder,

child abuse and neglect, and sexual abuse, Rosemarie’s leadership guided the staff and helped the organization evolve into a trauma informed organization.

Her commitment to those she served included counseling, teaching, training, facilitating, and mentoring both staff and students.

In December, Rosemarie's retirement gathering was celebrated by family, staff, colleagues and friends. Filled with love, music, food, history, and connections, we honored an individual who will continue to be a part of the ELAWC family.

CLIENT STORY

Martha “I felt his arms getting tight and something inside me said: little one get out.”

Martha realized that she was not alone: those closest to her also faced the same abuse but she had not realized it until that moment. In 2010, Martha’s cousin and then her sister came forward to reveal a history of sexual abuse from a close family member. Martha was very young when she became a victim of sexual assault. She was in kindergarten and on summer vacation staying with a relative when the assaults took place. When a close friend suggested she seek help, ELAWC was there. “I was someone who didn’t have a voice,” and after receiving services, Martha has been able to heal and grow.

“By forgiving him I gained my strength back. He can’t hurt me again, I’m old3 PROMOTING PEACE, EMPOWERING HEALTH & HEALING enough to take care of myself now.” Today, Martha is no longer afraid and pursuing her college degree. She’s building a bright future for herself, with strength and courage.
