Requirements in Getting Immigrant Visas A green card allows immigrants to live and work in the United States and is issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. There are five categories of immigrant visas. These are based on the skills and benefits that an immigrant can bring to the country. The first four focus on skills that an immigrant brings as an employee. Other categories emphasize specialized training and extraordinary abilities. The first category is immediate relatives, based on a close family relationship with a U.S. citizen. Processing time is approximately one year. Other categories are based on distant family relationships or specified relationships with lawful permanent residents. Once the petition has been approved, immigrants must submit all necessary documents to the NVC. Once the petition is approved, the immigrant can apply for a green card. Once an immigrant is accepted for an EB-1 visa, they will be required to provide all the necessary documents for their EB-2 or EB-3 visa applications. If they are applying for an EB-4, the employer must sponsor the immigrant. Once their petition has been approved, they will be given a letter outlining their application requirements. In addition, applicants will receive a copy of their green cards and instructions about applying for them. There are additional requirements to apply for the EB-1 and EB-2 immigrant visas. They must provide proper documentation of their skills and training and prove that they are marketable in the U.S. Those applying for an EB-4 visa must obtain labor certification from their employer. Their sponsor must sponsor them for the EB-3 immigrant visa application. If the petition is approved, the immigrant visa interview can begin. Applicants for immigrant visas must meet specific criteria. The most common categories of immigrant visas are family preference and immediate relatives. Immigrants in these categories are limited to 500,000 per year, and processing can take years. In addition, the number of people applying for an immigrant visa is determined by the type of relationship between the applicant and the United States. While this may seem like a lot of paperwork, there are a few standard requirements in getting an immigrant visa.
