The journal also includes invited critical reviews on topical issues, and overviews of the status of organic agriculture in particular regions/countries. The journal covers the principles and practice of organic agriculture and food systems taking a broad view of the subject area and is also encouraging papers which provide a critique or challenge to current standards or practices. According to the definition given by the IFOAM (March 2008), organic agriculture is a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved. The journal Organic Agriculture takes IFOAM's definition of organic agriculture stated above as the focus of its Aims and Scope, and consequently will accept papers which report studies that are carried out within certified organic farming systems, where the system uses the methods of organic agriculture based on the IFOAM principles. To address the challenges of developing sustainable food and farming systems, the journal seeks contributions which probe the technical and socio-economic constraints to productivity, market and system development, policy and governance. High quality research work in organic farming systems is often under-represented in the published literature and the journal particularly welcomes contributions which cannot be easily linked to a single disciplinary interest. Both the system under study and the approaches taken to its study will be considered by the Editors to determine the suitability of the paper for review. Authors should refer carefully to

the full Aims and Scope of the Journal before submitting their papers. Organic Agriculture is the official journal of the International Society of Organic Agriculture Research. ISOFAR was launched in 2003 and seeks to promote, encourage and support research in all areas of Organic Farming by facilitating global co-operation in research, methodological development, education and knowledge exchange.

In 2006, FAO estimated that over 31 million hectares of land were under certified organic cultivation. In many countries, despite the global economic downturn, sales of organic food are continuing to grow and new markets are developing as fast as the products to serve them. Researchers studying organic systems are found all over the world and there is an urgent need to provide a platform to share knowledge on all aspects of Organic Agriculture and Food Systems The journal Organic Agriculture has its origins in discussions between members of ISOFAR over a number of years about the need for a peer-reviewed journal to serve the growing needs of this research community. Early in 2009 the ISOFAR Board members agreed to work with Springer to launch a Journal which is dedicated to all issues related to the development of Organic Agriculture. Organic Agriculture will therefore be published by Springer with ISOFAR with the first issue appearing in April of 2010 In brief, Organic Agriculture provides a platform for the sharing of knowledge on all aspects of organic agriculture and food systems. Drawing on systems approaches within Organic Agriculture, the journal welcomes original interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary papers alongside the reports of focussed disciplinary studies that accord with the principles of Organic Agriculture. We also welcome papers which take a critical approach to one or more aspects of organic agriculture and/or initiate critical discussions of the principles on a scientific basis. Articles will principally be in the form of original, refereed papers, providing insights into the science, sociology, economics and policy relating to organic farming and food systems. Other items will include invited review articles on topical issues, overviews of the status of Organic Agriculture in particular regions / countries and technical notes which draw together the results of a number of research studies in a format suitable for wider application. The Editor-in-Chief welcomes all submissions that are directly relevant to organic farming and food systems. They should be written in clear English and may be illustrated with photographs, diagrams and graphs. The world of organic agriculture : statistics and emerging trends 2013 / edited by Helga Willer, Julia Lernoud, Lukas Kilcher ; supported by : International Trade Centre ; Swiss Confederation ; BioFach. - Bonn : IFOAM & FiBL, c2013. - 340 p. : ill. ; 24 cm. According to the latest FiBL-IFOAM survey on certified organic agriculture worldwide,4 (data as of end of 2011), data on organic agriculture are available from 162 countries (up from 160 in 2010). There are 37.2 million hectares of organic agricultural land (including in-conversion areas). The regions with the largest areas of organic agricultural land are Oceania (12.2 million hectares, 33 percent of the world's organic agricultural land) and Europe (10.6 million hectares, 29 percent). Latin America has 6.9 million hectares (18.4 percent) followed by Asia (3.7 million hectares, 10 percent), North America (2.8 million hectares, 7.5 percent) and Africa (1.1 million hectares, 3 percent). For the detailed results of the FiBL-IFOAM survey, see page 36. The countries with the most organic agricultural land are Australia (12 million hectares), Argentina (3.8 million hectares), and the United States (1.9 million hectares). Currently 0.9 percent of the agricultural land of the countries covered by the survey is organic. By region, the highest shares of the total agricultural land are in Oceania (2.9 percent) and in Europe (2.2 percent). In the European Union, 5.4 percent of the farmland is organic. However, some countries reach far higher shares: Falkland Islands: 35.9 percent; Liechtenstein: 27.3 percent; Austria 19.7 percent. In ten countries, more than ten percent of the agricultural land is organic. There has been an increase of the organic agricultural land in Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania. For Asia, after a major drop of organic land in 2010, 0.9 million more hectares were reported. There was also strong growth in Europe, where the area increased by 0.6 million hectares (6 percent). In Latin America the organic land decreased, mainly due to a decrease of organic grazing areas in Argentina. Apart from agricultural land, there are further organic areas, most of these being areas for wild collection. Other areas include aquaculture, forests, and grazing areas on nonagricultural land. They constitute 32.5 million hectares. In total, 69.7 million hectares (agricultural and non-agricultural areas) are organic. There were 1.8 million producers in 2011. Thirty-four percent of the world's organic producers are in Asia, followed by Africa (30 percent), and Europe (16 percent). The countries with the most producers are India (547'591), Uganda (188'625, 2010), and Mexico (169'570). About one third of the world's agricultural land (12 million hectares) and more than 80 percent (1.5 million) of the producers are in developing countries and emerging markets. Land use details were available for almost 90 percent of the organic agricultural land. Unfortunately, some countries with very large organic areas, such as Australia, Brazil, China, and India had no or only little information on their land use. Almost two-thirds of the agricultural land was grassland/grazing areas (23.2 million hectares). With a total of at least 6.3 million hectares, arable land constitutes 17 percent of the organic agricultural land. An increase of seven percent over 2010 was reported. Most of this category of land is used for cereals including rice (2.6 million hectares), followed by green fodder from arable land (2.2 million hectares), oilseeds (0.5 million hectares), protein crops (0.3 million hectares), and vegetables (0.2 million hectares). Permanent crops account for approximately seven percent of the organic agricultural land, amounting to 2.6 million hectares. Compared with the revised data of the previous survey, the permanent cropland has remained steady. The most important permanent crops are coffee (with 0.6 million hectares), constituting almost one-fifth of the organic permanent cropland), followed by olives (0.5 million hectares), nuts and grapes (0.3 million hectares each), and cocoa (0.2 million hectares). Most of the wild collection area (including areas for beekeeping) is in Europe (36 percent of the global total) and Africa (35 percent). Not much detail on the crops harvested is available. Berries, medicinal and aromatic plants, and fruit are among the most important crops. Availability : ORG 3142

Data quality assessment : data quality for practitioners series / Arkady Maydanchik. Bradley Beach : Technics Publications, c2007. - xiv, 321 p. : ill. ; 25 cm. (( Cover design Mark Brye. Imagine a group of prehistoric hunters armed with stone-tipped spears. Their primitive weapons made hunting large animals, such as mammoths, dangerous work. Over time, however, a new breed of hunters developed. They would stretch the skin of a previously killed mammoth on the wall and throw their spears, while observing which spear, thrown from which angle and distance, penetrated the skin the best. The data gathered helped them make better spears and develop better hunting strategies. Quality data is the key to any advancement, whether it is from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age. Or from the Information Age to whatever Age comes next. The success of corporations and government institutions largely depends on the efficiency with which they can collect, organize, and utilize data about products, customers, competitors, and employees. Fortunately, improving your data quality does not have to be such a mammoth task. Data Quality Assessment is a must read for anyone who needs to understand, correct, or prevent data quality issues in their organization. Skipping theory and focusing purely on what is practical and what works, this text contains a proven approach to identifying, warehousing, and analyzing data errors. Master techniques in data profiling and gathering metadata, designing data quality rules, organizing rule and error catalogues, and constructing the dimensional data quality scorecard. Business problems are directly related to missed data quality expectations. Flawed information production processes introduce risks preventing the successful achievement of critical business objectives. However, these flaws are mitigated through data quality management and control: controlling the quality of the information production process from beginning to end to ensure that any imperfections are identified early, prioritized, and remediated before material impacts can be incurred. The Practitioner's Guide to Data Quality Improvement shares the fundamentals for understanding the impacts of poor data quality, and guides practitioners and managers alike in socializing, gaining sponsorship for, planning, and establishing a data quality program. This book shares templates and processes for business impact analysis, defining data quality metrics, inspection and monitoring, remediation, and using data quality tools. Never shying away from the difficult topics or subjects, this is the seminal book that offers advice on how to actually get the job done. Offers a comprehensive look at data quality for business and IT, encompassing people, process, and technology; shows how to institute and run a data quality program, from first thoughts and justifications to maintenance and ongoing metrics; includes an in-depth look at the use of data quality tools, including business case templates, and tools for analysis, reporting, and strategic planning. Hay. - Amsterdam : Elsevier, c2009. - xxiii, 381 p. : ill. ; 25 cm. Extensive studies have been conducted on various parasitoid species, and almost all different approaches of the biology of parasitoids have been, at least once, studied on parasitoids of Drosophila. Originally, this particular interest for species parasitizing Drosophila hosts has been motivated by the exceptional knowledge we have on Drosophila species themselves, and particularly on D. melanogaster. Benefiting from this knowledge, the research conducted on Drosophila parasitoids have covered very diversified topics, such as physiological and immunity relationships with hosts, reproduction strategies, the role of symbiotic microorganisms, behavioural and chemical ecology, genetics, population dynamics, evolutionary biology, the different approaches of which including field surveys and laboratory experiments. As a result, we now benefit from a particularly vast and extended knowledge of the biology (and also biochemistry, molecular genetics, .) of these parasitoid species mainly belonging to Braconidae and Cynipidae Hymenoptera, and of their relationships with their Drosophila hosts. Impacts of bioenergy on food security : guidance for assessment and response at National and Project Levels. Rome : FAO, c2012. - iv, 64 p. : ill. (( Environment and natural resources management working paper ; 52. The global demand for modern bioenergy, and especially liquid biofuels, is rapidly growing, driven mainly by climate change mitigation policies and increasing oil prices. This creates both opportunities and risks for developing countries. On one hand, modern bioenergy development can boost both agricultural and rural development by raising agricultural productivity, creating new employment and incomegenerating opportunities, and improving access to modern energy services in rural areas. On the other hand, if not properly managed, modern bioenergy development can trigger a number of negative environmental and socio-economic impacts, for instance by putting pressure on key resources such as land and water. The environmental and socio-economic sustainability of modern bioenergy has been highly debated over the past few years. One of the most controversial issues that has dominated this debate is the relationship between bioenergy and food security. In order to shed light on this complex issue and help policy-makers understand and manage the risks and opportunities for food security associated with various bioenergy development pathways, FAO's Bioenergy and Food Security (BEFS) project developed an Analytical Framework and a toolbox, which are being implemented in several countries. Building on this work, FAO's Bioenergy and Food Security Criteria and Indicators (BEFSCI) project has developed a set of criteria, indicators, good practices and policy options on sustainable bioenergy development that foster rural development and food security. BEFSCI aims to inform the development of national frameworks aimed at preventing the risk of negative impacts - and increasing the

Global Challenges, Organic Approaches : Organic Food and Farming in Times of Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss and Global Food Crisis. Brussels : Proceedings of the 2nd European Organic Congress, Brussels, December 1, 2009. - Brussels : IFOAM EU Group, c2009. - 87 p. : ill. The IFOAM EU Group provides a coordinated voice for the organic movement in Europe. It supports the development and implementation of a viable policy and regulatory framework in the EU and the wider world that can deliver the vision of the organic movement. Together the Group represents a unique and increasingly important force that continues successfully to promote the cause of organic food and farming in Europe and beyond, based on the principles of health, ecology, fairness and care1. Climate change, biodiversity loss and the global food crisis are global challenges that must be addressed across all relevant policies. If we are to see real progress, the new CAP must mainstream climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies within a sustainable, socially just and ethical food and farming system. Organic is a holistic, coherent and resilient future for food and farming, able to cope with the significant changes on a local, national and global scale that are likely to occur over the next two or three decades. Organic food and farming is the only worldwide model of sustainable farming, regulated at the European level, delivering the public goods and services that society expects from the billions of Euros of European taxpayers' money spent under the CAP. Organic farming contributes to all aspects of sustainability and delivers better results than conventional. It enhances biodiversity, protects our fragile soil, improves the nutritional quality of food, ensures high standards of animal welfare and provides increased employment in rural areas. At the same time, organic farming reduces green house gas emissions and fossil fuel energy use, cuts nutrient and pesticide pollution of the environment and stops potentially harmful pesticide residues getting in to our food. The Sub-regional Workshop on Collection and Organization of Data was carried out in Batroun, Lebanon from 14-17 September 2010. Representatives from Greece, Italy, Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, Gaza Strip and West Bank and Lebanon as well as from FAO attended the meeting. In the Workshop the national data collection schemes were presented and differences, weaknesses and difficulties were discussed. In particular the data collection schemes of Cyprus, Italy and Greece follow the FU framework on data collection requirements, while their surveys are conducted according to the Medits and Medias protocol. In Palestine landings are collected on a census basis and effort on a yearly basis. In Turkey the Fisheries Information System comprises different programmed modules such as National fleet registry, Logbook, Sales notes, Registry of fishermen, and Biological. The catch Is collected by the use of the logbooks. In Egypt, the General Authority for Fish Resources Development, GAFRD runs a statistical system, which covers all the landing sites for marine and lakes catches and most of the River Nile landing sites. GAFRD collects fisheries data by two methods 1) Whole survey collecting system and 2) Random Sampling System. In Lebanon there is no any collection scheme running. A vessel census, which has been produced by the MedFisis in 2004/2005, has not been updated. An effort Is carried out in the North Lebanon by University of Balamand, which was stressed to be integrated to the whole country. Experiences from the FC Data Collection Project and GFCM Operational Units framework (Task 1) were presented. Automatic routines are needed for transferring data from national data base to Task 1. The artisanal fishery was considered as the major sector in the area which has difficulties to be monitored and thus the project was asked to take the necessary initiatives. EastMed 2010 : Report of the FAO EastMed Assessment of the Fishing Gears in Lebanon : Scientific and Institutional Cooperation to Support Responsible Fisheries in the Eastern Mediterranean : Beirut, 18-22 July 2011 / edited by Jacques Sacchi, Mark Dimech. Athens : FAO-EastMed Project, c2011. - vi, 47 p. : ill. ; 26 cm. (( EastMed Technical Documents ; 09. The FAO EastMed assessment of the fĂŹshing gears in Lebanon was conducted from the 18 to 22 July 2011. The main objectives of the mission were to make a review of the main fishing techniques in Lebanon and to propose ways how to re-structure the fleet, including proposals for a change in the associated fisheries legislation. The experts visited the main landings ports, and conducted interviews with fishers, fishing gear suppliers, fishmongers and officers from the Ministry of Agriculture. The main findings show that several characteristics which include, restricted continental shelf, artisanal gears and vessels, lack of electronic equipment (e.g. GPS, fish finder) and lack of freezing facilities, result in fishing activities which are restricted to 3-6 nautical miles from the coast. Most of the fishing gears use small mesh sizes and hooks with the consequence that small sized fishes and juveniles are present in the landings. The priority should be to improve the exploitation of fisheries resources by using more sustainable fishing gears, increase the exploitation of offshore waters which at the same time would reduce the fishing pressure from coastal waters. However, any change of gear, fishing strategies, prohibition of fishing technique or any development must be subject to an assessment of the potential impact including biological, economic and social and introduced gradually with the support of the fishing industry. If this approach is not followed it could lead to illegal fishing, with possible conflicts between fishers including social repercussions with serious consequences. Availability : ORG AQUAFISH 3117

EastMed 2010 : The Puffer Fish Lagocephalus sceleratus (Gmelin, 1789) in the Eastern Mediterranean / edited by Manal R. Nader, Shadi Indary, Layal Ephrem Boustany. Athens : FAO-EastMed Project, c2012. - vi, 33 p. : ill. ; 26 cm. (( EastMed Technical Documents ; 10. In the Mediterranean region, the fisheries sector has been suffering from the impacts of migration of aquatic organisms through the Suez Canal. Among the most devastating species to both fisheries and habitats is the aggressive predatory puffer fish Lagocephalus sceleratus. The fish bio-concentrates Tetrodotoxin (TTX), a very potent poison making the fish unmarketable and poses a great risk to human health if consumed. In addition, L. sceleratus has been recorded to destroy fishing nets and lines leading to economic losses for fishers. The objective of this review is to describe the status of L. sceleratus and its commercial applications, if any, around the world with emphasis on the Mediterranean Sea. Given the lethal TTX toxicity of L. sceleratus, and the strict regulations passed around the world preventing its fishing and consumption, coupled with the little knowledge available about its biology and its bioconcentration of TTX is not recommended at this stage to consider marketing the fish to consumers. Even-though the aquarium and capture-based aquaculture industries may provide partial solutions, the best option lies in creating, and in association with pharmaceutical companies, multidisciplinary laboratories in Mediterranean countries with the main objective of isolating TTX from puffer fishes including L. sceleratus and investigating the toxin's potential use in the pharmaceutical industry. Such an option would create many employment opportunities in the region, but more importantly, it will create a fishery that will yield economic benefits to the fishers and control wild populations through increased fishing pressure. However, such an initiative requires many investigative activities about the biology of the fish as well as very strict permitting and regulatory processes in the countries where such a fishery might be established. +Mare antico, la vela latina a Tricase : Il restauro del Portus Veneris [DVD] / a cura dell'Associazione Magna Grecia Mare. - 1 dvd ; 14 cm. CANA-CNRS : a scientific vessel for Lebanon : Strengthening Cooperation Between Italy and Lebanon Towards the Sustainable Development of the Marine Environment [DVD]. - Beirut : National Council for Scientific Research, c2009. - 1 dvd ; 14 cm. The overall objective of the project is to increase the knowledge of coastal and marine environments towards drawing responsible and sustainable development outlines while preparing guidelines for an integrated coastal policy. It intends to prepare a complete picture related to the sea condition and its resources aiming at identifying sustainable and relevant economic approaches of the activities along the coastline of the Country. The CNRS strongly requested the donation of a scientific vessel, in order to become autonomous in the planning and execution of scientific campaigns in the sea and to reduce the “scientific knowledge gap” which represents an important constraint for the Lebanese Institution at its current state. The scientific vessel renamed CANA-CNRS, donated by the Italian Government to CNRS is now used for the scientific campaigns connected to the CNRS research programmes. Five major fields of intervention have been defined for responding to the complexity of the mission: Sea Physical Environment (bathymetry of the coastal area); Hydrology, hydrobiology and biodiversity; Mammalian and fishery (halieutic marine resources); Coastal pollution; Scientific dissemination. Richard Arthur, Rohana P. Subasinghe. - Rome : FAO, c2012. - xiv, 207 p. : ill. (( FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper ; 547. The current trend towards increasing intensification and diversification of global aquaculture has led to its dramatic growth, thus making aquaculture an important food-producing sector that provides an essential source of aquatic protein for a growing human population. For both developed and developing countries, the sector is recognized as creator of jobs and an important source of foreign export earnings. The expansion of commercial aquaculture, as is the case in commercial livestock and poultry production, has necessitated the routine use of veterinary medicines to prevent and treat disease outbreaks owing to pathogens, assure healthy stocks and maximize production. The expanded and occasionally irresponsible global movements of live aquatic animals have been accompanied by the transboundary spread of a wide variety of pathogens that have sometimes caused serious damage to aquatic food productivity and resulted in serious pathogens becoming endemic in culture systems and the natural aquatic environment. The use of appropriate antimicrobial treatments is one of the most effective management responses to emergencies associated with infectious disease epizootics. However, their inappropriate use can lead to problems related to increased frequency of bacterial resistance and the potential transfer of resistance genes in bacteria from the aquatic environment to other bacteria. Injudicious use of antimicrobials has also resulted in the occurrence of their residues in aquaculture products and, as a consequence, bans by importing countries and associated economic impacts, including market loss, have occurred. As disease emergencies can happen even in well-managed aquaculture operations, careful planning on the use of antimicrobials is essential in order to maximize their efficacy and minimize the selection pressure for increased frequencies of resistant variants. The prudent and responsible use of veterinary medicines is an essential component of successful commercial aquaculture production systems. This publication is presented in two parts: Part 1 contains 15 technical background papers presented during the expert workshop, contributed by 29 specialists, and which served as a basis for the expert workshop deliberations; Part 2 contains the highlights of the expert workshop. pescatori.
