Nostalgia for a time you've never known

Since I can remember nostalgia has been a feeling that has impacted my life in countless ways. I remember crying one day because a song I was listening to brought me back to a time filled with warm memories, and good people.

That’s what Anemoia is meant to do; fill you up with warmth, bring you back to times you wished you could exist in, and put you in a headspace that is full of nothing but blissful memories.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and an emotion that I absolutely adore to its fullest extent. But be cautioned, that nostalgia can be powerful.

CHANCE LUCY

Chance Lucy is a multimedia artist based out of Seattle, Washington.

Giving life to art through the means of painting he fills an interesting pocket within the art community. Finding a clear inspiration among the things that remain near and dear to the hearts of many, it is clear that nostalgia takes effect in how he creates.

What is nostalgia to you?

Nostalgia is everything. Things, music, food, places, memories, everything. It’s a reminder of our past and how time is constantly moving. I believe it can be positive and negative but it’s always there, it’s a part of our lives.

What part does nostalgia play in how you create?

It definitely plays a huge part. I’m always trying to tap into feelings multiple people can relate and connect with and there’s nothing easier than nostalgia.

Is there anything from your childhood you wish was still around today?

Nothing materialistically. I mostly miss that limitless imagination and creativity that comes with childhood. Oh and my friends.

Do you remember when you first felt nostalgia?

I can’t remember the exact time I ever felt nostalgic but I do know as I’m growing older I feel it more and more.

Where do you think the feeling comes from?

I think it ccomes from mixed emotions that can be like a mental condition similar to depression, maybe it comes from the fear of death. Not wanting to grow older and further away from our past.

What part do you think emotions play in that feeling?

So, so much. Those emotions last a life time and are almost never forgotten. No matter how old we get we can still remember a favorite thing from childhood and instantly feel nostalgic and it makes you want to go back.

Finding creativity through nostalgia is something that Chance has made relatively clear time and time again through his work. The next few pages showcase that work, and give insight to the man behind the art. Finding inspiration through artists like Warhol it’s clear that Chance is on his way toward success.

HOLLY HENDERSON

Holly Henderson is a collage artist based out the Detroit area in Michigan.

Graduating with a degree in Graphic Design as well as a minor in Art History, Holly continues to create work that speaks loudly to her influence from areas that we in this day look to as an era of nostalgia. I got the chance to talk to her, and ask her some questions.

What part does nostalgia play in how you create?

Nostalgia plays a huge part in t he w ay t hat I create. The complexity of being a human being and exploring what that means always comes back to nostalgia in my mind. The way we form connections and community and those turn into memories over time is a really beautiful aspect of life, and it’s one of the few things that can truly be universal across humanity.

Is there anything from your childhood that you wish was still around today?

Yes absolutely. Really only intangible things though. You have so many “firsts” throughout childhood and adolescence, and once you’re an adult you sort of stop having those “firsts” in life. New experiences, finding your way, soul searching.

That’s something I wish was more present in my life today.

Do you remember a time when you first felt nostalgia?

Yes and no. I remember when I was in fourth grade, my dad playing soccer with me in the backyard. It was one of those really cliche moments where familial love feels tangible and I distinctly remember feeling like I needed to pay close attention to the details of how the grass felt and how the air tasted because it was going to be something I would one day miss.

What part do you think emotions play in that feeling?

Emotions play a big part in that feeling. The whole feeling, in my eyes, is based around emotion. I think it can also be said that it’s based around personality, too. If someone had trauma in their childhood, th ey likely don’t enjoy dwelling on the past and might have different emotional connections with nostalgia. Or even the general sentimentality of a person. If you’re very in tune with your emotions and had a pleasant upbringing, you’re probably a bit more nostalgic than the average person.

What things in today’s world do you think 15 years from now we’ll get that same feeling from?

It’s interesting because I see so many current cultural influences that are just regurgitating the past. Music, movies, and fashion all seem to be inspired by a sense of nostalgia from a past decade. I think that the current state of America alongside the ongoing pandemic, it’s a lot easier to dream of a more idyllic past because the present can be very painful and that makes it hard to imagine the future.

I do think there are some cheerier things that we may be nostalgic about. I imagine the world getting even more digital and the technology will definitely be more advanced, so I am sure that one day we will look at our laptops, tvs, and phones in the same way that we currently look at a motorola razr. I hope that we are currently just overindulging in the internet because it is new, so hopefully we have a twisted sense of nostalgia for this era, “remember when we all talked to screens all day instead of each other?” rather than nostalgia for a time more analog.

I notice in your works you pull from a lot of vintage magazines, why do you think you feel so attracted to that sort of imagery?

I believe that I am so attracted to much of the 50s and 60s imagery from vintage magazines because it was like the blueprint of suburbia. The idea of the nuclear family, gender roles, and the modern american neighborhood were defined during this era. So much of that is still present today, it’s just packaged differently. I think that it provides really interesting commentary as well because it irrevocably indicates a sense of the past, which makes everyone start to view things as more poetic and with rose colored glasses.
