Hi and welcome to Liverpool’s Royal Court and this production of The Legend Of Rooney’s Ring.
It was a time for heroes. It was a time for war. It was a time for furry undies and daft jokes…
This show is a journey into the fantasy world of swords and sorcerers, wizards and warlocks, Wayne and Colleen. It’s a show that is very much in the style of our annual Christmas offering, full of jokes, songs and barely believable plot twists but all based in scouse reality.
Helen Serafinowicz is an exceptional writer, with the likes of Motherland and Amandaland making her one of the hottest properties in television. She came home to Liverpool during Eurovision and popped in to see Jonathan Harvey’s A Thong For Europe. We’re glad she did, because she got bitten by the Royal Court bug!
Stephen Fletcher directed Thong, and he has taken Helen’s script and brought it to life. When you add in a creative team of choreographer Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, Kate Harvey as sound designer, Ian Scott as lighting designer, Jamie Jenkin on AV design and Olivia Du Monceau creating an incredible set and costumes, then you end up with more magic than Gandalf on a Saturday night out in Vegas.
We are very lucky to have such a talented cast to call on. John May makes his Royal Court debut as Wayne and he was very flattered (we think) when we told him that he was a great fit for
the role. Emma-Grace Arends is a more familiar face and she shines as Coleen. Lindzi Germain, Adam McCoy, Keddy Sutton and Liam Tobin are regulars from our Christmas shows and they bring the same energy and madness that have people choking on their turkey dinners. Finally, we have two other Royal Court debutants in Jess Smith who has been a brilliant addition to the cast and Terry Mynott, the man of a thousand voices.
One more thank you goes to Wayne and Coleen themselves, for not suing us (correct at time of going to print). This isn’t a show that sets out to be mean or mocking of them and there is a lot of love for two genuine scouse Titans. We hope that they sneak in and watch the show. I think that they might enjoy it. Donald Trump, less so. But he’s pretty busy at the moment so we’re hoping he won’t notice.
Now it’s time to drift off into the fantasy world inhabited by a muscular, heroic Wayne Rooney, a demonical Donald Trump and Coleen, the most beautiful girl in the world. We hope you enjoy it!

The Legend Of Rooney’s Ring is based on a Scouse urban myth, but how true is it?
At the core of this fantastical show is a kernel of celebrity folklore, the night a young woman biifed an engagement ring into a bush. Liverpool’s Royal Court has the exclusive scoop on what really happened that night.
If you don’t stick your head out of the window when someone’s having a fight outside your front door, are you even from Liverpool? Art curator James Lawler was settling in for a peaceful weekend at his mum’s when what sounded like a rowing couple outside disrupted the quiet. He’d headed upstairs to bed and said goodnight to his mum when she shouted for him.
“My mum called me into her room and said, there’s someone having a row outside”.
Well, it’d be rude not to have a look, wouldn’t it?
It turned out to be Liverpool’s first couple, Wayne and Coleen, in front of his mum’s toprairy
Carefully hidden behind the curtains, James and his mum watched the action and both gasped as Coleen took off her engagement ring and threw it.
“It went right into Mum’s hedge”, he says.
They went to bed, thinking nothing more of it, but it was only when the police knocked on their front door the following morning they realised it could be valuable.
“I truly love Coleen. She is the archetype Scouse diva. And I kind of felt sorry for her that she’d been so upset”.
A famously private couple, the story that the press got wind of was that the ring had been thrown to the squirrels, more specifically, into the nature reserve at Formby. The truth of the story has been lost to the winds of time.
James is no stranger to the glitz and glamour of celebrity. Once a makeup artist and magazine editor, he co-founded DuoVision with Martin Green in 2012. The two curate art shows featuring the work of artists too often overlooked. That has included Holly Johnson, Duggie Fields, Caroline Coog and Pam Hogg.
“I’m not surprised they changed the location, otherwise you would have had half of Merseyside out there looking for a diamond ring!”
In fact, the BBC reported at the time, that those searching for the reportedly £25,000 ring were to be banned from the Fomrby Point Nature Reserve, and anyone disturbing the squirrels would be told to leave.
Debbie Peers of the National Trust told the BBC she feared the rare red squirrels in the reserve would be harmed by treasure hunters trawling through the park.
“We really do not want people trampling through the woods and disturbing the squirrels”
“Metal detectors are banned from the reserve anyway and we will enforce this.
“Anybody who is seen disturbing the squirrels will be asked to leave.”
The story itself went into Scouse urban folklore, as stories of celebrity are wont to do. It only returned to the fore when writer Helen Serafinowicz came
to see A Thong for Europe and wanted to explore the myth for her own show.
The show itself is a love letter to Coleen, with Emma-Grace Arends C’leen dubbed “the most beautiful woman in the land”.
“Celebrities can fall into two camps,” says James. “They can lap up the attention and do whatever they can to maintain it. Or they can keep themselves fiercely private and just give people glimpses into their lives. Coleen is the epitome of that. She’s obviously incredibly smart, really savvy and quick witted. It’s about time that was celebrated in its own show”.

Helen Serafinowicz Writer
Helen Serafinowicz was born in the humble district of Belle Vale, Liverpool, where, on her long perilous walks to Our Lady of the Assumption school or to the swimming baths behind Belle Vale Shopping Centre at the weekends, she would dream of writing hit sitcoms for the BBC. A play so powerful it could change the world, stop the endless violence and unite communities. Sadly she couldn’t do that so she wrote this instead.
