The change of scale for people moving from a large lobby to an intimate 200-seat theatre space is quite profound and we did not want it to be too abrupt. For the Cradle Theater, we separated the lobby’s sound and light from the interior of the theatre by bringing the audience in through a narrow spiral entry. By “squeezing” people in, we gave them a unique experience, one that introduced the drama of a new space. So, when they actually enter the small theatre, it seems to be quite a large space in comparison.
