Read the topic sentence and the final sentence of every paragraph thoroughly Its easy to get distracted with lots of facts n details Remain focused Maintain a well organized outline (notes) to refer to


The Helpers

Use the transition words ,appositions etc to help you guide Expose yourself to as much reading as possible. Capture the great variety of passages used in the test Wear the writer’s eyeglass to understand him/her


Vocabulary

Expand your vocabulary, practice new words n phrases as many times as possible Use a dictionary to know the different shades of a word Get the contextual meaning Correlate ideas while reading Only practice n more practice can make you understand the unknown words from context


Your unique style

While taking notes shape your own style, understanding In such exams like TOEFL iBT, not the methods but how they are used is the issue Practice fast reading however, the sense/comprehension must not be lost


Think Before You Act

Don’t be blinded by unknown topics, words, length of a passage Move beyond ideology to inquiry Try to reflect on your choice for a few moments Be aware /open to alternatives

Enhance your skills through communications Interact with the faculty n your fellow students Play the game of doubting and believing to get to the answer Be informed from your mock test experience

The 2 Writing Tasks

Academic writing is integral to any education. Good essays reflect the students academic skills Task -1 in 20 mins Task -2 in 30 mins Total 50 mins


Integrated Writing

Involves reading(3mins) & listening Time -20mins Word limit- 125-225 Communicate in writing about academic information after reading and listening


Why Integrated Writing?

Measures your ability to understand 1.academic reading 2.short lecture You have to Determine the relation between the 2 sources of information Organize & compose a response in standard English


How To Write?

Draw requested connection between the lecture & the reading Organize the ideas---unity &coherence Use Appropriate examples ,Explanation Variety of words , Phrases, Sentence structures


Notes

Take notes Be Alert to main ideas, like Policy Practice Position Hypothesis Phenomenon Make notes of both reading & listening


Strategy

Before you start writing Make a short outline of the points you wish to make Draw connecting lines between reading & lecture notes to show relationships. The reading will reappear , refer to it while writing if necessary.

You are NOT being asked for your opinion You have to explain how the points in listening relates to the reading points Write in full English sentences


Your Response Must Have

Specific ideas, Explanations Arguments present In the lecture that challenge or agree with the points in the reading. Accurate presentations of every point Coherence -A clear Coherent structure that enables the reader to understand what points in the lecture relate to what points in the reading. language that makes sense
