The Effects of Smoking
Introduction
Smoking cigarettes damage the body in a number of different ways. Over several years, the American Council on Science and Health and many others have documented the effects of smoking. Everyone knows that it is bad for you, but not many know how it affects the body. There are many myths about smoking, which mainly occur with all of the teens that are smoking. Most teens don't know that the effects of smoking are mostly permanent. They think that they can smoke for a few years and then quit without suffering any long–term effects. This is most worrying to me, because the recent finding, reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), claims that teen smoking rates have...show more content...
Some organs in the body will never recover fully from the damage the smoke has done. These consist of the respiratory system, heart, eyes, mouth and even the urinary and digestive organs.
Respiratory System
Smoking directly irritates and damages the respiratory tract. Each year, a person who smokes one–pack–a–day smears the equivalent of one cup of tar over his or her respiratory tract. This irritation and damage cause a variety of symptoms, including bad breath, cough, wheezing, and respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. These effects can be reduced, but not entirely reversed, by quitting.
Smoking is the principal risk factor for developing chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Emphysema is characterized by permanent structural changes in the lung tissue. The deterioration in lung function associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema is directly related to duration of smoking and the number of cigarettes smoked. Smoking during childhood not only increases the risk of developing chronic bronchitis and emphysema in adulthood, but also lowers the age of the life.
Every person in the world, smoker and nonsmoker, experiences a slow decline of lung function starting at about age 30. In smokers this gradual decline starts both with a lower amount of functioning and at an earlier age. Smokers suffer from decreased lung reserve, meaning they are unable to run, or even walk as far or as fast as their peers who have never
The Effects of Second Hand Smoke
Did you know that 3,000 American non–smokers will die this year from lung cancer? Those deaths are entirely preventable. Their lung cancer is caused by second hand smoke. Second hand smoke is smoke they have breathed in from other people's cigarettes. It is also known as involuntary or passive smoking. There is nothing passive however about the effects of this smoke. It is lethal and it is dangerous. It may give as many as 300,000 children under the age of one and half bronchitis and pneumonia. It could even be responsible for more than 35,000 deaths from heart disease.
Smoking causes lung cancer. This fact is indisputable. What is sometimes disputed is the extent to which the smoke from other...show more content...
As a carcinogen, tobacco smoke ranks alongside other cancer causing agents such as asbestos, arsenic, benzene and radon gas. Tobacco smoke is full of carbon monoxide. This is a poisonous gas that inhibits the transportation of oxygen to the body's vital organs.
Coming out of the tip of someone else's cigarette are double the concentrations of nicotine. There are three times the amount of the carcinogen benzo (a) pyrene, five times the amount of carbon monoxide and fifty times the amount of ammonia. On top of this the person quietly puffing away next to you is allowing arsenic, formaldehyde, vinyl chloride and hydrogen cyanide into the air that you are breathing. In despite of this knowledge 43% of children in the US are exposed to second hand smoke in their own homes. Despite the attempts of many places to ban smoking there are still millions of people, who are at risk from the effects of second hand smoke. Many of these will die prematurely.
It is perhaps though in children that we see the most alarming effects of the exposure to second hand smoke. Children's lungs are still developing at their young age. Exposure to second hand smoke means they will have a decreased lung function. A child's airways are also smaller. This means a child will have to breath faster. The result is a child will breath in comparatively more of the poisonous chemicals than an adult in the same room.

Smoking cigarettes can have such an harmful effect on the individuals who abuse it and the people who are in around them. A cigarette abuser is likely to become addicted to the drug resulting the person to face with lung cancer. There are many close people in my life who are trying their hardest to quit this specific addiction. Making it ridiculously easy for me to identify and choose the topic in which I chose. Although, before I chose my original topic I had to focus directly on "tools" and strategies that could possibly help individuals quit smoking. Instead of my initial topic thesis statement which was "Smoking cigarettes can be prevented and there are various tools to help quit smoking." My final thesis statement for the this specific final project is now "Smoking can lead to various diseases although a nicotine patch, nasal spray, and vaporizers are the best tools to help quit smoking."
My plan was to go in depth in my research and find valuable information relating to my topic. In the beginning, I was extremely confident in my abilities to learn which tools will help the best to quit smoking and had no doubt in my mind that I wouldn't be able to get it all figured out. I've investigated several different sources. Some of the sources I checked out fit perfectly with my topic and a couple other sources we're awfully helpless during my research. After lots of tough thinking about what source I'm going to choose I decided to pick sources that have the most scholarly Get
Killing Society Softly Most people already know that smoking is bad for health. But do society really understand just how risky smoking really is? Cigarettes contains nicotine, a highly addictive drug that makes it difficult for smokers to kick the habit. Cigarettes products also contain many poisonous and harmful substances that cause disease and premature death. Smoking in teenagers is still a problem since cigarettes are so dangerous for society. Smoking can cause health issues, behavior issues and financial issues.
Teenagers need to stop smoking if they want a healthier life. Smoking damages one's body system, which turns into cancer. Society need to start making good decisions instead of wrong ones, but also need to make sure to educate the younger society about the consequences of smoking cigarettes. As related by the internet webpage, "because teenage's body is still growing, teens and youth are vulnerable to its deadly effects.''( internet webpage). Teens are vulnerable to any toxic habit and because they are still in a development stage, they can be in serious danger. Smoking causes deadly consequences as it says in the above sentences. Smoking in teenagers makes an individual have breathing problems because the lung is not healthier enough or not working the way it is supposed to work. Smoking causes adolescents lung function problems. Also if a teenager has asthma, tobacco smoke can trigger an attack or make an attack worst. Teenagers need Get

Smoking has become a trend in today's world, even though people know how harmful it is. Smoking causes are obvious it will ruin your health and give you series of health issues. In America 85% teenagers first start smoking from the age of fifteen and sixteen, smoking tobacco is really addicting. Smoking causes heart diseases, blood pressure, series of cancers such as, lung cancer, mouth cancer and throat cancer. I have noticed that many people in my relatives who smoked all their youth quit smoking in their forties after experiencing heart attacks. Some of the people don't even quit after they realize they are having health issues. This is all because of being addicted to nicotine. There are several brands of cigarettes and people assume...show more content...
Every smoker has different reasons to smoke such as showing off to public that I am smoking or to look cool. Precaution is better than cure, but yet no one will follow that till they are in a stage of being cure and not being aware that cancer is not curable. Many people lack knowledge about what is going to happen after months and years of smoking. Cancer can make you look hideous and there is a stage where people regret smoking but it becomes too late for them to go back and change their decisions. Occasionally smoking is also not so great yet affecting same as regular smoking. Instead of relieving stress by smoking tobacco a person should do regular exercise which surely will reduce stress and keeps your heath well maintained. Rarely people smoke alone at their first time, it's all on the friend circle the person is with, such as hanging out with smokers will off course make you a chain smoker and it has been now like a tradition seeming like it will carry on to young teens who hangout with the wrong people. Smoking is not legalized till you are the age of nineteen but yet we see young ones smoking and it's sad to know how they will suffer later in life. Smoking gradually affects your whole body where a person starts realizing shortage of breathing or dry skin and headaches. There are some new ways of quitting in the market such as the nicotine gum and the patches but I believe they are costly and not yet helping, which makes people

Smoking cigarettes is something that many people do all around the world and is a bad habit for many people who do it. Over "one thousand million" people all over the world smoke tobacco according to "Green facts". Smoking is a habit that many companies and TV channels try to get people to stop doing since it is a dangerous habit. Cigarettes include many harmful substances such as acetone, arsenic which is found in rat poison, cadmium which is an "active component in battery acid" (information obtained by American Lung Association) and many more harmful substances. Because of the chemicals found in cigarettes people who smoke often times tend to look older and have yellow teeth. Certain chemicals in the cigarettes stain a person's teeth yellow and smoking cigarettes kills a person's skin faster than laying out soaking up the sun. Besides the physical appearance smoking can be a very dangerous habit that most often times leads to many different effects such as people getting different types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and second hand smoking. All that can be avoided by not smokingtobacco cigarettes. Smoking has many bad effects one of them being cancer, most of the leading causes oflung cancer is smoking. According to an article called "The Effects of smoking...Lung Cancer" written by many authors studied an analysis of people who have or have had lung cancer and saw that "of 366 patients in the analysis 54% we males and, 60% were diagnosed with adenocarcinoma."

The Effects of Smoking on the Body
Almost one third of the World's population are smokers for one reason or another, appearance, reduce stress etc. However, I, and many others, find it very difficult to believe smoking can aid anyone's appearance as it encourages early ageing, and I do not believe that any of the risks that smoking has is worth any amount of stress relief that it can provide.
Cigarette smoking can have serious health effects on the human body. Smoking causes a variety of life threatening diseases. This is because they contain more than 4,000 chemicals (www.click2quit.co.uk), including 43 of which cause cancer (www.betterhealthchannel.com.au).Nicotine is a substance in...show more content... However, the most easily affected area of the body damaged by smoking is the respiratory system. It can cause irritation of the trachea (windpipe) and larynx (voice box) as well as reduced lung function and breathlessness due to swelling and narrowing of the lung airways and excess mucus in the lung passages (Letts Revise Biology The Ultimate Study Guide). These can be caused by many cigarette contents. Tar is the collective term for various particles suspended in tobacco smoke. It contains the carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene that is known to trigger tumour development (cancer). Not only does tar trigger tumour development but it also coats the alveoli with its sticky substance, which slows down the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen. Animal experiments have shown that nitrogen oxides damage the lungs in such a way that they cause the lung disease emphysema. Hydrogen cyanide destroys the cilia lining the bronchial tubes, which reduces the efficiency in getting rid of foreign substances that enter the respiratory system, resulting in the poisonous ingredients of tobacco smoke remaining in the lungs. Ammonia also damages the lungs affecting the ability of the body to breathe,
Although it remains a large portion of the U.S' economy, tobacco smoking can lead to a variety of diseases and disorders that affect the user. The effects of smoking tobacco not only affect the user but surrounding people as well: permanently destroying their lungs and children, increasing the chances of diseases and of cancer.
Diseases caused by the effects of smoking or second hand smoke may lead to emphysema. To start, even after only a few years of smoking, one's lungs could be affected for the rest of his/her life. Making reference to the issue, "If exposure to cigarette advertising is a risk factor for disease, it is incumbent on the public and elected officials to deal with it as we would the vector of any other pathogen" (Sullum)....show more content...
Regardless of consumer belief, smoking dramatically increases the chances of contracting many diseases – such as heart disease or high blood pressure. Although not every user experiences these diseases, it is well known that smoking can decrease one's life time dramatically. The information given states, "It's virtually impossible to escape the effects of tobacco" (Jordan). This stated, Jordan expresses that essentially if you use tobacco, there is a fairly high chance that one will damage his/her body in some way. Furthermore, there are many more diseases that can be contracted and the ones stated are only the most common. Continuing, the author explains the affects of smoking, "Expose to specific elements of secondhand smoke causes blood clot more easily and damages arterial lining" (Jordan). As stated, certain components in tobacco increase the chances of high blood pressure and blood clots to form in the body. Concluding, respiratory problems in young children can occur through second hand smoking, these include asthma. Children that asthma effect increases from smoke, "Asthma turns out to be about twice as common in children exposed to high levels of second hand smoke" (Secondhand Smoke: Is it a Hazard). Not only does tobacco smoke increase other diseases, it also increases the severity of diseases already contracted as shown in the previous quote. To conclude, tobacco smoke

Smoking cigarettes is something common all around the world and has been around for ages. Sometimes after a meal, with a cup of coffee, at a social event, hanging out with friends, working on cars, being stressed out, celebrating an accomplishment, being on a break at work, while having a drink, and being in a car on the way to work are all times where a smoker would smoke a cigarette. People that smoke seems to be everywhere you go. There is an estimated 1.1 billion people that smoke today. Some people only smoke occasionally and socially but for others it is a part of their everyday life. Although cigarettesmoking is still a popular trend today, this act directly causes health and safety problems not only to the smoker, but to the people around them and the environment as well.
Smoking cigarettes is known to cause people to develop health issues. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states "the increased risk for smokers is 2 to 4 times more likely for coronary heart disease, 2 to 4 times more likely for a stroke, and 25 times more likely to develop lung cancer than a non smoker". These increased have a lot to do because of what is in them. While you are having a smoke break you might not realize that cigarette smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals. Most of which one would not normally want to be consuming. Roughly 70 chemicals that are in cigarettes are known carcinogens. A carcinogen is any substance that is known to promote the formation of cancer. Thus smoking can cause cancer not only in the lungs but just about in any other part of the human body. Most of these health risks can lead to an early death. Smoking is also considered to be the leading cause of preventable death. Most health issues can be avoided by living a healthy lifestyle. Someone just by simply not smoking cigarettes can avoid all the increased risks caused by smoking and live a longer healthy life.
Smoking cigarettes is known to be addictive and habit forming. Smoking cigarettes regularly is what develops it into addiction. It can be seen as introducing people to a life of addiction. Smoking cigarettes is not only addictive because of the nicotine found in tobacco but also because of the habit. Putting a cigarette in your Get more content

Abstract
Smoking is known to be a primary cause of harmful effects on health, family, environment and society. However, scientist research in health and environment, that researches show that smoking cause many diseases, even lung cancer. An aim of my study has been to determine that smoking also effect on family and society. Results indicated that smoking was not only effect on environment, health but also effect on family, society.

In particular, "the reduced brain size that we saw in smokers' babies could lead to impaired cognitive ability of the child" (Smoking during pregnancy, 2003). A study by Drews, Murphy, Yeargin, Allsopp and Decoufle (1996) looked at mental retardation in children of mothers who smoked during pregnancy and concluded that smoking during pregnancy increases by 50 percent the likelihood that a child will have mental retardation. Maternal smoking during pregnancy is also a recognized risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Teenage smoking has remained to be a serious problem ever since the 1970s. Until now, cigarettes are still recognized as the most dangerous substance being used by a great number of high school students on a daily basis. The impact of nicotine, the powerful drug contained in cigarettes, make for people addict and difficult to quit it. Therefore, adults should smoke as least as possible in front of teenagers because they are at an age when the curiosity
level is the highest, and the desire to try something new can affect his/her life.
Harmful effects of smoking on environment and society No one can deny the harm of smoking to the human body. The medical evidence for this is well established and overwhelming. Because of this, the law in the United States and many other countries requires including a warning on any smoking advertisement. Many millions of Americans, both children and adults, are still exposed to second

According to the American Lung Association, there are an estimated 50 million people who smoke. For some reason people just do not fully understand the risks they take by smoking. Cigarette smoking is a frequent cause for many health problems with smokers. To begin with, there are many hazardous ingredients in cigarette tobacco. Some of the ingredients are poisonous or addictive. Cigarette smoke produces thousands of chemicals that are hazardous to a smoker's health. There are over 4000 chemicals produced by a burning cigarette. At least 200 chemicals are known to be poisonous to a persons health. Though filters help block some of the chemicals, they will not stop them completely. Nicotine is an addictive drug and...show more content... When a person smokes a cigarette the body reacts immediately to the chemical nicotine. Nicotine begins to effect a smoker's blood pressure, the flow of blood from their heart, the heart beat and breathing rate.
Cigarette smoke also contains carbon monoxide, the same poisonous gases released from a car exhaust pipe. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless, highly toxic gas that reduces the amount of oxygen that the blood can carry. Combined with the effects produced by the nicotine, it creates an imbalance in the demand for oxygen by the cells and the amount of oxygen the blood is able to supply. Tar is another chemical produced from cigarette smoke. Tar contains at least 30 cancer causing irritants. Tar is a mixture of several substances that condense into a sticky substance on the lung. Tobacco manufactures have produced a cigarette that is low tar and low nicotine to reduce the chance of cancer, but these cigarettes are still hazardous. There are many deadly diseases related to smoking cigarettes. The respiratory diseases that have been linked to cigarette smoking are lung cancer, cancer of the larynx, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and coronary heart disease. The hazards of these diseases increase with the quantity of cigarettes smoked and the length of time the habit is continued. Smoking related diseases cause the death of more than 400,000 Americans in 1994. Almost everyone knows that
