We are certainly fortunate to live in Hong Kong. Not only does Hong Kong offer a balance of nature and city life, but this multicultural city is also home to people from all over the world.

What are the benefits of learning about other cultures?

Being aware of cultural heritage and traditions makes it easier for us to connect with others. Learning to see the world through multiple lenses and perspectives ultimately makes us more open and empathetic.

So why should we be open to cultural exchange?

Learning about other cultures can increase our exposure to new experiences. We get to try different cuisines, participate in festivals, learn foreign languages, and engage in unique cultural activities, such as art or foreign cinema. We may not be able to physically visit every country, but we can still get a taste of different places and experience their richness.

Where can we learn about other cultures in Hong Kong?

1. Explore Little Thailand in Kowloon City

What better way to learn about a culture than through food? At Kowloon

City Market, you can find Amporn Thai

Food, a food stall that sells all the delicious culinary treats from Thailand, including delicious grilled pork neck, tom yum kung soup and papaya salad. Near the market is Ruamjai Thai Grocery. Buy some Thai herbs, curry paste or exotic fruits to take a bit of Thai food culture home with you!

2. Visit Chungking Mansions

You don't need 80 days to travel around the world, only one!

Chungking Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui is a melting pot of cultural variety. The building offers a wide range of cuisines to choose from.

These include authentic Indian, Nepalese, African and Turkish foods to name a few. Start your trip around the world in India with some masala tea, enjoy a Turkish lamb kebab for lunch and end your day in Nigeria with okra stew. With most restaurant owners originally from their representative countries, you will have the opportunity to ask the experts and have access to first-hand cultural knowledge!

3. Join a Dance Class

Dancing plays an important role in many cultures as it often serves as a medium to tell stories and express oneself. Several dance studios in Hong Kong offer classes for both adults and children. You could try Irish tap dancing at Echoes of Erin in Sai Kung. Why not learn the art of flamenco at Esencia Flamenca? Alternatively,

Latin and Bollywood dance classes are also very popular, depending on your preferences.
