This very well-known book is made up of diary entries written by Anne Frank while hiding with her family for two years in an old office building in Amsterdam. It was originally written in Dutch and was later translated into more than 70 languages. It is one of the most widely read accounts of the Holocaust and a powerful reminder of the horrors of war. Why do I love it? Despite the simple language and vocabulary, this book is authentic and heart-wrenching. The detailed and emotional diary entries depict the circumstances faced by a Jewish teenage girl during a turbulent time in history. Who would like this book? Students who are especially interested in history and WWII will appreciate this book. They will be transported back to Amsterdam in 1942 and embark on a journey with Anne.

Chinua Achebe is one of the most influential writers in modern African literature. This debut novel follows the life of Okonkwo, a wrestler and local hero in a fictional Nigerian clan of Umuofia. Through his story we learn pre-colonial life in Nigeria and the effects of European colonialism and missionaries on indigenous communities and traditions. Why do I love it? I thoroughly enjoy learning about different cultures and how they interact with each other. This book gave me valuable insight into some common misconceptions about African culture. Who would like this book? Anyone who would like to learn more about different cultures with a keen interest in colonialism.
