RIVERSIDE PREVENTION PARK Rowntree Park, York, UK

Rowntree Park is located in the south of York city centre. Under the threat from flooding, the project aims to enhance the connection between the community and natural characteristics, providing a well-being environmental open space for the neighbourhoods.

Project Title: Urban Design Dissertation

Course: MA Urban Design and Planning

Year: 2023 | University of Sheffield

METHODOLOGY To provide a well-being enviornment that meets the expectations of neighbourhoods and copes with local features, interviews and observation are the main methods to get primary information.

The secondary data aims to identify general ideas about well-design space and its characteristics, including case study, literature reviews, and site studies.

FLOODING ISSUES As part of the River Ouse floodplain, Rowntree Park has suffered water issues annually.

The poor drainage system causes residents to not use the park after heavy rainfall.

In this project, Rowntree Park plays an integral role in enhancing connectivity between the community and the natural environment.

The playground design reflects the beauty of water patterns, ripples , and waves. Those fabrics represent the influence of each member in the neighbourhood.

The site is located in the heart of Taipei city, next to two main roads and metro stations, and is surrounded by several commercial buildings.

The majority of constructions are abandoned in poor condition and illegal rooftop additions.

Meanwhile, the site is mixed with cement-material buildings and historical red brick clay constructions, presenting an interesting scenery.

The colors and patterns of vintage tiles reflect the richness of culture and historical memory.

The project design casts back the fabric of the tiles, maintaining the primary street permeability.

Neepsend is located at the edge of Sheffield city, being the most preserved region of industrial legacy. With a great number of brownfield sites appearing. The project focuses on the adaptability of built environment and celebrating diverse natural habitat.
