Welcome to the Hythe Festival 2018 The Hythe Festival comes around every two (even) years and aims to provide something for everyone. The Festival is an excellent example of the community coming together and showing what can be achieved by a group of dedicated, determined and hardworking volunteers, ably supported by Hythe’s many respected organisations and businesses.

Events are held in and around Hythe. The aim is to showcase local talent in art, music, drama, floral design and poetry, encouraging these to thrive and expand. We work in partnerships with the Brockhill School of Performing Art, and JAM on the Marsh. A new addition to the programme is the Art Trail, where visitors will be able to view art of all kinds in local studios.

The programme contains a lot of new additions, but retains all the established favourites. The original ethos of the Festival remains the same with the objective of providing as many events as possible free of charge.

Many thanks go to all our sponsors, local organisations and businesses, event organisers, the committee and supporters, and all those behind the scenes who have supported us in ways too numerous to mention, without whom the Festival could not happen.

With one of the longest High Streets in the country, the Royal Military Canal, a lovely seaside promenade, acres of open green and surrounded by the hills and countryside, Hythe provides a fantastic canvas for the multitude of events. It’s a great place to be at any time but add the Festival and it’s even better!

PLANNING YOUR VISIT The majority of events during the Festival are free but there are a few that do have a charge. Please check the detailed event listings for full details. Also check the website www.hythefestival.co.uk Information For two Saturdays before the Festival there will be an information desk at the Undercroft of the Town Hall in the High Street. The Supporters of the Festival will be pleased to assist with any questions. Regular news and updates will be available on the website. There will also be an information point at the Tin Tabernacle during the Festival Parking There will be FREE extended parking at Sainsbury’s in Military Road. There will be parking on the South Road sports ground for the Festival Fun on the Green (10.00am - 7.00pm). For the Canal Bank Concert on 14th July parking will be available on Hythe Green from 10.00am - 10.00pm. Parking will be free on these days at these venues. However, donations for the Hythe Festival Fund will be appreciated. Check website for details and updates.

Accessibility The Hythe Festival Committee aims to provide a fully accessible Festival. FESTIVAL PROMOTION SATURDAYS 23rd AND 30TH JUNE There will be an information desk run by the Supporters of the Festival at the Town Hall Undercroft in the High Street. It is open on Saturdays 23rd June and 30th June between 11.00am and 3.00pm. Here you can collect your FREE programme, get information about the Festival, purchase your copy of the limited edition Hythe Festival Poster for £9.95, buy your map for the Garden Safari and also ask any questions you may have.

JULY 7th to 15th There will be an information point at the Tin Tabernacle in Portland Road during the times when it is open for events. Here you can collect your FREE programme. As well as enjoying the events on offer you will also be able to pick up your map for the Art Trail.

The Hythe Festival of Arts & Heritage is working closely with the JAM on the Marsh Festival, which runs from 5th – 15th July.

Starting at the Eastern end at the junction with Douglas Avenue, this will be a grand and colourful Parade comprising local organisations, clubs and societies.

In addition there will be a wide variety of vintage vehicles, accompanied by splendid marching bands. Led by the Royal Poperinge Band, this event kicks off the Festival in fine style. The 40-strong band will lead the main parade setting off at 11.00am, and will play on the Green later in the day. On Sunday afternoon they will perform on Oaklands bandstand. This open photographic competition (limit three entries per person) aims to capture the spirit of the Hythe Festival within the themes of Hythe art and heritage.

We are inviting you to ‘get creative’ and think about how to represent the above themes and share your photos of the Festival. Remember they will need to catch the eye and have a strong visual impact and evoke the spirit of the Festival. Entrants will be asked to provide a caption and give a brief factual description of their photo(s) and why they chose it.

Starting at the Town Hall our guides will delight you with stories of local events and people, our relationship with France over the years and the history of the Cinque Ports.

Heading out through the undercroft with its ‘interesting’ inscription you pass many fascinating and historic buildings, several with their own unique features, including the King’s Head, St John’s Almshouses, Oaklands and many more.

You will stroll along the towpath of the Royal Military Canal – built to keep Napoleon at bay but not completed until 1809 when the threat of invasion was long past – then through the High Street and up to the 11thC church of St Leonard with its famous ossuary – one of only two in the UK. With over 1,000 years of history, Hythe is truly charming – do join us.

2.00 – 4.30pm RHDR station, Scanlons Bridge, Hythe Military Canal bank CT21 6LB An easy afternoon walk along the south bank of the canal followed by a climb up to the Roughs where you will see the Sound Mirrors built to detect enemy planes before radar was in use. Returning via a different route along the top of the Roughs, this is a chance to see these iconic concrete structures and to learn about the local wildlife.

Distance 4 miles, 2.5 hrs, grade 3 walk, 1 steep slope, Please do not park in station car park, but park nearby on Military Road.

This will be an exploration of the creative process, with plenty of opportunity for the audience to join in and ask questions.
