Another thing that I’m very passionate about, is how we can get more people into museums, and how museums can become more accessible. I don’t want to do a traditional hang on a white wall with a leaflet; I want to bring pop culture or fashion or other modes of creativity into the museum space to tell the same academic story that will impact more people. So my collaboration with them was kind of a ‘coming together’. I always wanted to do the show but I didn’t know I wanted to do it with photography. I also wanted to do an exhibition that focused on the Black woman and I really allowed myself to enjoy the research. And so, I approached Fotografiska and asked them if they would be interested in an exhibition about the representational gap of Black women. Very luckily, they were. The beginning of this collaboration started about two years ago, and at that point there were a lot of contemporary artists that I instantly had in mind. However, I also really wanted to find lesserknown and younger artists and artists that had been lost to history. I spent a lot of time talking to scholars, reading, and trying to create a robust list that contained familiar contemporary art names, historical photographers, and other lesser-known artists. I also had to create the immersive modes of presenting these ideas. So far it has been really enjoyable working on it, and I can’t wait to see how it is received. I think starting in New York is also really interesting for me, because most of my exhibitions normally open in Europe. However, I know that this type of show is important everywhere. It’s a starting place where discussions about race, feminism, and representation are really rife, and I think that it will hopefully land well and capitalize on new ideas and new ways of thinking.
