An Open Studio Searching for Identity
Idea — How can a space be used collectively? The dream of affordable public space is explored in practice: in the very heart of Basel’s old town, a studio workshop is available to people interested in the project. Collectively, rules are set up, analyzed and evaluated in order to generate future forms of collaboration. The aim of the project is to establish a self-sustaining platform, a free space which matches Basel. Context — My work initiates collective collaboration in the areas of education and culture. In Basel’s old town, JETZT intends to create an environment in which resources, skills, and knowledge are shared collectively and spread further on a voluntary basis. Content — By choosing to explore my project in practice, I was faced with ever-new challenges: inevitably, being project manager of a “one-woman enterprise” for a limited amount of time, I took over a great variety of tasks. In the protected space of my bachelor studies, I learned a lot about my actual skills and abilities as well as about their limitations. The tasks included setting up a program, designing the arrangements for the space, assembling a team, raising funds, building furniture, spreading advertisements. Throughout the year, having created my own experimental ground, I have many times been able to put into practice my plan of providing a public space to enthusiastic non-professionals where they can learn from others
and go beyond themselves in doing so. Through JETZT a place for active involvement, design expression and experimental work has emerged. By offering several formats and putting in a lot of organizational work, a great variety of people have been reached. Time and time again I am surprised by the support I receive, the kindness and sincerity of those participating, and the convincing substance of events which have accumulated in JETZT.
Coaches Internal: Anka Semmig External: Heike Sperling Team & Credits I would like to thank all of you who by mistake are not mentioned on the list below. Thanks to Anka and Heike: I would choose you again – you are wonderful! Thanks to Ralf, Dänu, Papi, Sandra, Jan, Jonas, Jones, Na, Suse,
Product — On the one hand, the product of my diploma project is the space itself, the arrangements made in it; and on the other, the documentation of the experiments taking place there. The documentation may serve as a set of instructions for similar projects. Upstream — In my project I try to create a space in which skills and knowledge are exchanged collectively and spread on a voluntary basis, a space where cross-generational and cross-cultural groups meet to engage in design activities.
Andreas, Ursula , Hansruedi, Victor, Benois, Adi, Thomas, Hakan, for all the crazy, funny, and also the sad moments in JETZT.
