Hi Gang,

Director’s Spot

We are now only 5 weeks away from dress rehearsal on Sunday 1st April, it’s amazing how time flies. It doesn’t seem all that long ago that we started rehearsals for Gang Show 2007. March is the month when all the finishing touches of the show are being put together, whether it is finishing off musical numbers and sketches, organising the scenery or the mammoth task of making sure all the costumes are ready. On top of that there are the 2 extra theatre rehearsals in the middle of the month which go a long way to letting me know how good a show we really have. All in all it is a very hectic time, but ultimately what we have been working towards since way back in May last year when the preparations for this year’s show started. We should all be involved in Gang Show because it is FUN, and something different that being involved in Scouting gives you the opportunity to do. So let’s over the remaining weeks come along with a smile on our faces and start putting on a “performance” at rehearsal like I know you will come Monday 2nd April when we will hopefully be opening to a packed Whitehall Theatre. Finally, keep learning those words, and SELLING TICKETS!!! Ged

It’s a Family Show Already in this series we’ve had three sets of twins who are in this year’s cast. Now meet another twin, but this time he’s on his own. It’s none other than our esteemed editor, Chris Jenkins, whose brother Steven prefers to shun the limelight of the stage. Chris joined us for 2003 Gang Show so this will be his 5th. He came up through in the 22nd Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Ventures. He is currently ACSL at the 22nd, as well as being the Gang Show’s Unit’s Explorer Scout Leader. He says his favourite items this year will be Let’s Be Frank and The Barricade. Chris attends once a week at Dundee University where he’s in his third year of American Studies. The rest of the time he’s assistant manager in the MX Active clothes shop at City Quay where he is in charge of fellow cast member Lee Corr. His dad Jim joined the Gang Show cast for the 2002 show, taking over the comedy team spot vacated when Bill Fleming retired. His Scouting experience began as a member of the 22nd’s parent’s committee 12 years ago. Two years later he became an Assistant Scout leader and he’s now the 22nd’s GSL, as well as being Dundee’s Blair Atholl Jamborette co-ordinator and a training advisor. He says his favourite item in this year’s show is How High but apparently this sketch has been shelved, for some reason. Jim’s married to Alice and they have two sons, the afore-mentioned Chris and Steven. Jim works as a classifier in Michelin, and his other interests are archery, bowling, gardening and supporting Dundee United. Cub and Scout members of the cast are Melissa and Daniel Ross. Melissa first trod the Gang Show boards in the 2006 show so this will be her second. She began scouting in the 5th Beavers and is now in the Cubs. She says her favourite item in the show will be the Finale She is in primary 5 at the Downfield School and hopes to be a teacher when older. She also enjoys swimming and dancing. Daniel’s first show was in 2003 so he’s coming up for his fifth. He was in the 5th Cubs and now the Scouts. His favourite item this year is Meatloaf. He’s in class 1AW at Lawside Academy, and likes camping and hockey. For the first time in this series we have a grandfather/father/son tie-up, namely Dave, Gavin and Dylan White. Dave’s Gang Show life goes back to 1986 when he became a member of the backstage staff. He graduated to being stage director in 1993 and, as well as this post, he’s also an assistant director on the production side. Dave began as a cub in his native Hawick before switching to the Boy’s Brigade in the Borders, being 20 years in that movement. On coming to Dundee he became an Assistant Scout Leader in the 49th, a post he’s held for 32 years. He’s married to Annette and they have Gavin and Morag as family. Dave enjoys bowling, first aid and reading. He is head of Information Technology with Dundee City Council. Sons Gavin’s first Gang Show was in 1986 and he took part in most shows up until 2000. He had a fiveyear break before returning for the 2006 show. Gavin was in the 25th Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Ventures, had a spell as an ACSL in the 34th, and is presently ASL in the 32nd. His favourite item this year promises to be The Barricade. He enjoys playing football for the Macalpine in the Sunday Morning League. He is a warehouse person at Tesco. He and his wife Nickie have two of a family, Kelvin (2) and Dylan. This will be Dylan’s second Gang Show. He started off in the 32nd Beavers and is now a sixer in the 32nd cubs. He says Let’s Be Frank is his favourite item. Dylan’s in primary 6 at St Clements School, enjoying playing football and would like to be a footballer for Dundee.

My Favourite Item Through The Years Here is what seven further long-serving members of the Gang Show say has been their favourite item through the years:Stephen Bangs (5 previous shows)

My favourite number has been the GS Top 40 from last year which appeared in the programme as Our Kind of Music. It was really good number with good songs, ending with Amarillo.

Andrew Gray (18 previous shows)

I liked the most recent version of the songs from Les Miserables, namely fighting for freedom in 1999, because basically it’s a very good show.

Mhairi Kidd (10 previous shows)

I particularly enjoyed the senior’s number, The Time Of Our Lives, in 2005, which was based on songs from the Dirty Dancing. It was good fun doing it and the audience really enjoyed it.

Cameron Lindsay (5 previous shows)

I’ll go for Starlight in 2002 because it was dead jumpy.

Rebecca Simmons (7 previous shows)

My favourite is School Daze, the cub sketch in 200, because we got to act like little brats.

Genna Simpson (9 previous shows)

My favourite item was is Twist (2003) because I like the Oliver musical.

George Walker (18 previous shows)

I’ve been in many items over the years so the choice was very difficult but I’ll pick Outside The Local in 1995. It was the very first comedy sketch that I took part in and I had to bring on beverages for the Four Old Men. I enjoyed the dress rehearsal particularly because it was Irn Bru and it was very gassy and the Four Old Men couldn’t get their words out for burping. Then on the Saturday night they all had a head on their pints which was scooshy cream and it ended up all over their costumes which was hilarious.

Spot the difference Can you spot all the differences in this picture? This is just a bit of fun, no prizes for correct entries I’m afraid, but do feel free to tell me how many differences you find!
