PUBLISHER'S WORD Around this time last year we were all excited for a new decade, full of 20/20 clear vision. Boy, did things get clear! Who would’ve thought that this year would dismantle old systems and ideologies that are clearly no longer relevant, expose the insincere, and provide new, more efficient ways of getting things done? It’s been during this time we’ve found ourselves winning or losing, growing and gaining new skills or complaining and remaining stagnant, with no in between.

If 2020 could be summed up in one phrase, it would without a doubt be “crazy AF”. Not only did we experience incredible highs and very low lows, this year has been “return of the real”, as more people got called out, cancelled and exposed for their true colors. If you still have people left in your immediate circle, count yourself blessed.

Losing so many people along the way, whether figuratively or them physically leaving the Earth, has been rough. The departure of so many of our greats like, Kobe Bryant, Chadwick Boseman, Andre Harrell, B. Smith, Jas Waters, Pop Smoke, Lexii Alijai, King Von, Mo3, and many others has been hard to deal with. Add this to COVID-19 affecting everyone’s livelihood and you’ve got one of the most tumultuous years in modern history.

Which makes me thankful for our culture even more. Not only are we resilient, we know how to make the most out of every situation, finding light in the darkness and most dire situations. So, my number one wish for the New Year is that we all keep going. Not on some barely making sh*t. Or even “new year, new me”. But, on some thriving, remain optimistic for the future, ready to seize each day full of opportunity-type sh*t. Because it’s only up from here and Black lives still matter!

T

hese are trying times in America. It is hard to get together with friends to enjoy our short time on this Earth. People have been forced home without knowing when they will be able to work ever again. Times like these we turn to music to get us through.

Music has been known to get people through the toughest times. Music is relaxing and soothing. It is a release. The music industry has even adjusted to this notion and went with a more melodic vibe. Even rappers that are more lyrical and hardcore have embraced a more melodic approach. Some rappers are even singing now. The ability to be diverse has propelled careers and the reach has made decent artists into great artists.

In comes slowed + reverb. It was started by a YouTube personality named Slater. He made the first slowed + reverb video. It was “20 min” by Lil Uzi Vert. The video currently has 8.5 million views on YouTube. After his success, more people have followed and now there is a whole culture behind the slow melodic videos.

Some of the greatest melodic songs have had the pleasure of being slowed + reverbed.

Music masterpieces like “I Wonder” by Kanye West, “Double Up” by Nipsey Hussle, “Jaded” by Drake and “XO Tour Llif3” by Lil Uzi Vert have all been slowed + reverbed.

You can even create your own slowed + reverbed song on slowedreverb.com. It is just as simple as inputting the song file into the website and you get your own slowed + reverb song. This is a dream for people that love to get involved with music. The fact that it is simple to do also makes it something ideal for the average music head. For somebody trying to do something for a hobby and gain some exposure while being involved with music, this is something to consider.

One thing one notices in the videos is the use of anime. The use of anime is the nod to the generation that likes to create these works of art. The pictures just add to the vibe that the song creates. Images from classic anime combined with classic songs are a person age 20-30’s dream to help relax after a stressful day that life has to offer.

The digital age has been embraced by Millennials and Generation Z. People younger and younger have $1,000 iPhones and even more expensive MacBooks and they are making sure they use them. They are using old-time things like music and enhancing their experience via technology.

Music is now a digital business in terms of actually consuming it. Album sales are more driven by streaming. Gone are the days of blogs and downloading software like LimeWire.

Most people use Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal and YouTube to get their favorite music.

Slowed + reverbed is the result of the digital age where everybody is connected. People feel closer to their favorite artists more than ever. The fans are more involved with the music more than ever. Things like this should open up more ideas to be involved with the music.

2020 brought along changes that the world wasn’t ready for. With COVID-19 causing closure to most of what we love and doing everything from home is somewhat the new wave, all we can do is adapt and stay safe. We have heard the word “Quarantine” more times this year than our whole lives, but we have to make the most of it. Online streaming grew exponentially and we got familiar with a variety of new ideas, content, and entertainment. Below we list a few things that you should tune in to while quarantining.

SOCIAL MEDIA Created by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, Verzuz showcases some of the best artists, songwriters, and producers battling it out for two 10 song rounds. Initially introduced in March 2020 with Swizz and Timbo displaying 20 of their biggest hits, it has grown into a series that not only featured Hip Hop acts, but highlighted Dancehall legends and music, featured R&B and Soul Divas, R&B groups, Gospel icons, and Trap legends. The series is sponsored by Ciroc, and recently launched season 2 of the series.

Habla Errr Weekly Habla Errr Weekly is an Instagram Live concert series streamed from various parts of Jamaica.

It showcases some of Jamaica’s greatest upcoming and established talent. Founded by Medz Productions, RoRo Jammings Productions, and Mixing Lab The Beatboxer, the series has been one of the few that has provided “Quarantine Entertainment” as the Island’s entertainment industry has been on the decline since the COVID-19’s presence. Since May 2020, the series has seen performances from Mr. Lexx, Macka Diamond, D’Angel, Nesbeth, Tifa, and many others to thousands of viewers. “Habla Errr Weekly” is featured every Sunday at 4PM (EST), and is hosted by Mixing Lab and series DJ Dr. Love.

P-Valley If you’re a fan of Katori Hall’s “Pussy Valley” play, then you’re going to love her 2020 series, “P-Valley”. The 8 episode series follows the lives of employees working at a strip club called “The Pynk” in the fictional city of Chucalissa, Mississippi. With a colorful cast that includes Brandee Evans, Shannon Thorton, Nicco Annan, Loretta Devine, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Elarica Johnson, you’re in for love and drama, and you’ll find yourself screaming for “Lil Murda” and chanting “M-I crooked letter crooked letter I” while throwing money at the screen. An all female directorial crew was responsible for season 1 of “P-Valley”, and it was recently renewed for season 2!

MOVIES Zero F**ks Given Comedy didn’t take a backseat to 2020, and Kevin Hart made sure he was heard with his new comedy special, “Zero F**ks Given”. Released in November 2020, Kevin tackles various topics from male group chats, family, brick oven pizzas, sex after 40, and of course COVID-19. Shot in his home where audience members wore masks and followed social distancing guidelines, “Zero F**ks Given” was one of the few specials done during the pandemic. If you’re a Kevin Hart fan, grab some laughs (and pizza) here.

STILL FAR GONE DRAKE’S 10 YEAR REIGN IN THE GAME Written by Penthouse Shawn

uring the best year of my life a young artist from Canada released probably one of my favorite works of music ever created. It was a new voice. Different from the Gangsta voices I was accustomed to most of the time. The singing was mellow. It wasn’t this crazy a** range of notes being put to use. It was as if someone was whispering to the teenager in you. Drake and his ’So Far Gone’ mixtape would be the theme music to my summer and for moments after when I wanted to reminisce.

Out of the blue emerged this guy giving Lil Wayne a run for his money on tracks. This lightskin dude would turn around and get you in your feelings about girls on your MySpace page. I didn’t know who Drake was prior to ‘So Far Gone’. There were tracks that LE HOMIES put me on to like “I Can Take Your Girl” and others like “Closer To My Dreams” which I discovered on my own, that I heard prior that my mind couldn’t compute. Halcyonic. It was just right.

Drake was so open about his feelings. The way he went about it was what we the listeners weren’t used to. The lyrics gave you the perfect captions for your pictures.

The beats at times would be so simple but compliment him so perfectly they seemed extravagant together. Applause goes to his producer 40 for that. I suck at memorizing songs line for line but I would recite the punchlines like a savage. “Successful” featuring Trey Songz and Weezy F. Baby had us going off in the McDonalds on 170th St. and Broadway. Our McDonalds… but I’ll get into that some other time.

Drake showed his appreciation for H-Town on “November 18th” where he let’s us know: “I sent ya girl a message, said I’ll see ya when I can. She sent me one back, but I ain’t never read it. ‘Cause pussy’s only pussy and I get it when I need it.”

Well, okay then Player. He goes from rapping to singing on the DJ Screw production and I think it was advising us this man was about to not be played with. If not track 6 definitely did. “Ignorant shit” a freestyle over Hov’s ‘American Gangster‘ cut, handed us bars on a plate.

Next is the slow jam “A Night Off” with a verse from singer Lloyd. (The beat for this is actually the same one for “Ignorant Shit” just slowed down for you bozos not paying attention.) Panty-dropping Drizzy at his finest then let’s us into Aubrey’s life with “Say What’s Real” where he opens up about his family issues, transitions and brags at the same time.

I prefer this Aubrey over what he’s putting out now truth be told.

“Little Bit”? Hidden gem. Played it on my mp3, then iPod like infinite times. “Best I Ever Had” took over the radio waves like a Muthaaaa. It’s what got cats listening to the Toronto native. After this? We never DID NOT hear of Drake. Think about that for a second.

Lil Wayne’s protégé became THE TALK. I was 16 and I was caught up with life at the time. The streets hailed Wayne king around this time, rightfully so. He presented Drake to us and we didn’t even get the whole J. Prince story until later fu***** wit their YMCMB aura. LMAO. 10 years later… for the first time the FULL version of his masterpiece has been made streamable on major platforms. Believe me when I say we have been waiting for this. No more YouTube searching for these classics. Man, even thinking about them days makes me wonder why we can’t bring AIM back?

About 2 years ago I came across an interview where 40 spoke on how the mixtape was constructed. To even hear that this audio-gold was recorded in hotels with some on-the-go equipment gave me a certain feeling of inspiration and reassurance on never to stop. The mixtape deserves a documentary. But we’ll settle for Spotify and Apple Music availability for now.

rom phat gold ropes in the 80s to the iced out chains and grills of today, jewelry has always been a mainstay in Hip Hop culture. However, the makings of the historically mysterious and misunderstood industry have been hidden from the public because most jewelers are born into and taught the family trade.

Thankfully, we have Day Shelton, founder of Flooded Jewelers here to uncover the shroud of mystery.

Crafting custom pieces for A list celebs like Lil Pump, Smokepurpp, OMGRONNY, Slushii, Abella Danger just to name a few, Day Shelton’s thirst for knowledge, humbleness and willingness to share his gift with the world are undoubtedly the driving forces behind his success, and the reason why he’ll continue down that coveted path.

How did you get your start as a jeweler?

90% of jewelers are 3rd generation jewelers and take over their families’ storefront passed down to them. The remaining ten percent come from a wealthy family, so they have the money to buy a storefront and fill up their shelves with inventory. I wasn’t fortunate enough to have either of those options. I actually got my start as a jeweler when I was looking for a chain for myself. It was crazy expensive and I knew it didn’t cost that much to make, so I decided to research it.

Over the next few months I studied how to make jewelry and discovered the equipment I would need. I also educated myself on diamond clarity, the different types of gold karats, and found myself investing most of my time in learning about it. I learned almost everything from YouTube. Once I got the equipment, I just started practicing.

What was the learning curve like, as a self-taught jeweler?

At first, I really thought this wasn’t for me, I was getting discouraged, it was hard for me to do the things I thought would be simple. For example, making a wax mold of the teeth from the impression, it took me so long to get the hang of that. I thought it would be so easy at first, but I soon realized it wasn’t. The wax mold is very important, if you apply the wax too thin when you cast the wax into gold, it will leave a hole in the design you are casting wherever you applied the wax thinly at. It is a very complex process.

I would definitely say creating the wax mold and then casting were the most difficult components for me. Just like anything else in life the more you do it the better you get at it. I just watched so many videos on YouTube to learn every aspect of creating jewelry, I was watching the University of Michigan’s Dental YouTube channel learning how to cast gold teeth!

Because how dentists make gold teeth, veneers, and retainers have many of the exact same steps as making custom gold and diamond grills. I’ve been doing this for 3 years now, so I’m very good at the wax and casting process, I don’t run into problems with the casting anymore.

Why do you feel more people aren’t getting into the jewelry industry?

A lot of people are trying, I think they just get intimidated by all the components of the industry and stop. It’s a lot of hands on work, and it takes so much knowledge to complete one piece.

That’s why normally one person doesn’t do the whole job themselves.

One person does the casting, one drills the holes, and another sets the diamonds. You need a very good team and that’s hard to find. It takes a lot of work. I think that’s why people don’t get into the industry; you can’t really do it all yourself.

What barriers of entry are there?

I would say the only barrier of entry is yourself. If I can make it in the jewelry industry anyone can. I’m a guy from Mississippi that didn’t have any money, and now I am one of the top jewelers in Miami creating pieces for people all over the world. No barrier is stopping anyone from becoming a jeweler other than their uncertainty in themselves.

What type of capital and skills do potential jewelers need to get started?

Many people looking to get into this industry think they need to be rich, or have thousands to invest right away. That is not the case at all. You can buy everything you need piece by piece.

Making jewelry takes a lot of skill and patience to master each step.

You can’t move forward to the next step until you master the first step. I found it was best to buy the machines and equipment one step at a time. Once I mastered one step with the equipment needed, I bought the next machine I needed. It will take a lot of time to master each skill of jewelry production. So, while you practice that skill you can save up for the next piece of equipment you’ll need.

The only skill you need to have is persistence. Every other skill you can learn while creating jewelry, but if you aren’t persistent this industry will not work for you. It takes a lot of failing.

I had to remake grills over and over before they even came close to being perfect. I got so frustrated at how long it took me to learn, and how many mistakes I made, sometime I really felt like giving up. But here I am, persistence is everything

You’re only 3 years in the game, but have already made a name for yourself with Flooded Jewelers. What do you attribute to your success?

My dedication. I’ve wanted to be a successful jeweler more than anything I’ve wanted in my life. I put everything I had into this, so failure was not an option. I stopped going to college to pursue this dream. When you put your all into a project, believe in yourself, and surround 24

yourself with supportive people it is hard to fail. Everyone is rooting for you. You can’t let yourself down, and you definitely can’t let everyone else down. I never doubted this company, I always knew it would be my way out. I am extremely blessed to have made it 3 years, but it’s still just the beginning.

How has location played a part in your success, as one of Miami’s top jewelers?

Location has played a HUGE part in my success. Miami is made for jewelers. There is so much money in the city and so many opportunities to sell your product. Jewelry is embedded in Miami’s Culture; the Miami Cuban Link isn’t called that for no reason. Everyone here wears jewelry. Mothers get their newborns gold bracelets. On special occasions families will buy a Cuban link for a gift. Almost every woman here has had a solid gold nameplate. Miami and Broward county are known for their Classic Plain Jane Gold Grills. There is a large demand here for jewelry. On top of that, there are the high-profile clients who want the bust down cuban links, the tennis chains, diamond grills, so everyone here is buying jewelry no matter what their income is. Jewelry is truly a part of the Miami lifestyle.

When did you start making custom pieces for celebrities like Lil Pump, Smokepurpp and OMGRONNY? I’ve been working with celebrities for a while now. Probably within my first year I was making jewelry for celebrities. My first celebrity client was an EDM DJ that goes by Slushii. I made him a few crazy pieces. I made Abella Danger some custom diamond grills as well. For Lil Pump, Smokepurpp, and OMGRONNY I worked with all of them at the beginning of 2020.

They are all friends with each other, so once I worked with Lil Pump, and they found out, I think they were like “we’re going to use the jeweler Lil Pump used, I know we can trust him.”

So, shortly after I did Lil Pump’s grills, I did Smokepurpp’s, and around that same time I did OMGRONNY’s bottom 8 VS Diamond Grills. He actually ended up losing those and just recently hit me up for another pair. So, those are coming soon. Shoutout to them for f*cking with me and coming back to get more pieces made, their support means a lot.

What is the process for making a custom piece?

A lot of work goes into a custom piece. Aside from paying for the gold and diamonds, you’re paying for a lot of labor. The first thing I need to know when we talk about a custom piece is your budget. This is important because it lets me know our boundaries right away- the max size we can do the piece, what karat of gold, and what clarity of diamonds.

Once we agree on a design, and a price, I will make a 3D design for you. This will show you exactly what your piece will look like once it is finished, and it is also the blueprint for me. It tells me how much the piece will weigh, the diamond count, where exactly the diamonds go and what size of diamond is supposed to go where. When you approve the 3D design, we will cast it into the desired material, drill the holes and set the diamonds – if your piece has diamonds. If not, it will go straight to be sanded and polished.

The final step is for us to add our logo, the karat gold used, and the diamond clarity. Once you see the “fl” logo on your piece you know it was made to the highest standards possible, and was inspected multiple times. If we spot a single flaw, even the most minuscule thing, we fix it. We only deliver perfection to our clients.

What was your favorite and most complex piece to make?

I wouldn’t say I’ve had a most complex piece just because every piece we make is very complex in its own way. No job is alike. For example, grills are complex because we have to get the perfect impression of the clients teeth just so the grills can fit properly. If we get a bad mold, and the grills end up not fitting it is a lot of work to get them to fit correctly, especially if they are diamond grills. If you move those too much it can mess up the setting and make the diamonds loose, so that is a very complex process itself.

I love making grills though, they are my favorite. People get so creative with their designs, and they just look so dope when they’re finished. It’s also a fun process making grills. Most of the time I get to meet the client in person and do the molds of their teeth. So, we talk and get to know each other a little bit before unlike other custom work where all the work can be done remotely.

What is the biggest piece of advice you have for those wanting to get into the jewelry industry?

The biggest piece of advice I can give is to always remember it normally takes at least two years before your business is profitable. Some people start a business and expect to make money right away, it doesn’t work like that most of the time. So, when business is slow and you’re not making much money, always remember that, it takes about two years to be profitable.

Also, don’t ever doubt what you can learn on the internet, the internet is the biggest tool in the world right now. If you want to learn how to make jewelry or anything, go on YouTube!

There are great people who upload everything they do and teach you how to do it. You don’t have to be in a big city or working at a jewelry store to learn how to do any of this stuff.

That’s the great thing about jewelry, you can start off by making grills in your garage.

Anything else we should know?

My first collection is dropping soon, it’s called “The Holy Collection”. I’ve always made customs and 1 of 1’s, so I figured it’s time for me to drop something for everyone. This collection will consist of extremely detailed religious figures such as Mother Mary, Jesus, and unique crosses. It took several weeks to design each pendant. They are small sculptures of gold and each detail has been chiseled perfectly. They truly are amazing. I can’t wait to show them to the world. They are the most detailed pendants I have ever made.

DOM KENNEDY & NIKO G4 “LAST SUPPER / DARK SHADES” If you still haven’t heard Dom Kennedy‘s new album, “Rap N Roll“, you’re seriously missing out. Not only does it ride smooth in the whip and at the crib, sonically painting pictures of a Westside lifestyle, it also packs plenty of game. Recently, the Leimert Park legend came through with the double-sided visual release for “Last Supper/Dark Shades“, featuring Niko G4 and directed by David Caramena.

Starting off with “Last Supper”, as we see Dom K surrounded by his crew in front of a phat a** mansion, complete with dope whips, before heading off into the night for a party Biggie Smalls would be proud of for “Dark Shades”, the visual evokes strong mid-90s aesthetic when everything was butter leathers and opulence all around. So, “roll with the winners” by catching “Last Supper/Dark Shades” on YouTube and “Rap N Roll” everywhere.

OMB PEEZY Originally from Mobile, Alabama, OMB Peezy moved to the Bay area when he was young allowing him to draw on a wide range of musical influences. After catching E-40’s attention, he was signed to the Bay Area legend’s Sick Wid It Records/300 Entertainment.

From then on the sky has been the limit for OMB Peezy, as he lets his dynamic personality shine in everything he does. Since his debut project, ‘Preacher 2 The Streets’, Peezy has collaborated with the likes of Lil Boosie, Lil Durk, T.I., Sada Baby, G-Eazy, NBA Youngboy and more. In addition to dropping his “In The Meantime” mixtape, this year found OMB Peezy releasing a hella funny YouTube series, “Hood Essentials”, where he explored food and other real life topics.

Most recently, Peezy released the remix of his viral single “Big Homie” with Jackboy and King Von (RIP). Already running up the digits with over 2 Million views, the remix is poised to follow in the original’s footsteps (29 million views) with Jackboy and King Von’s added perspective. “Big Homie” will be featured on OMB Peezy’s upcoming project “Too Deep For Tears”. With guest appearances from some of today’s realest rappers, like Blacc Youngsta, YFN Lucci and Mozzy, the project is sure to be something fans will keep on repeat.

So, you just dropped the “Big Homie” remix with King Von and Jackboy, which already has millions of streams. How that collab come about?

Me and King Von have a relationship, that’s my brother so coming together for a collaboration was easy. Me and Jackboy have been rocking for a while now so having him on the “Big Homie” remix was fitting. I don’t hang with too many people, so it means something when I could have Von and Jackboy on a track with me.

What do you respect the most about each artist?

I respect everyone doing their thing and trying to better their lives, but I respect King Von and Jackboy because I can relate to them.

How would you say living in Alabama and the Bay influences your sound today?

Being in those areas, I got to see a lot and experience a lot, and they all contribute to my music. I get to experience different sounds from the South and from The Bay, and they influence my style and delivery.

How has E-40’s mentorship since signing to Sick Wid It Records help grow you career and open doors for you?

I feel like signing to Sick Wid It opened a lot of doors for me and being around E-40, I got to soak up some game and meet a lot of different people. He told me to keep putting out music, because something’s gonna stick at the right time, and stay consistent. It’s a blessing so far.

You’ve put out plenty of bangers like, “Struggle”, “Reminder” and “Doin Bad”, featuring NBA YoungBoy. Out of all of he songs you’ve made, which one are you most proud of?

Actually, I’m most proud of “Big Homie” because it was a spur of the moment type of sh*t with that track. There was no big marketing plan behind it, just put the song together, shot a video, and put it out there, and it got a lot of love.

Which one did way better than you initially thought it would?

“Lay Down” is that one for me. It’s the one that kicked things off for my career. At the time, to make it big was just a dream. Even with the success of “Lay Down”, it didn’t hit me that my life was changing until maybe a year ago. I never really looked forward to or hoped for anything growing up. I didn’t care much. Now I’m doing everything that I wanted to do. That’s crazy.

In addition to dropping good music, you also have your YouTube series, “Hood Essentials” which is very funny and informative. How did that idea come about?

Honestly, it just happened, no planning or anything like that. It was my friend’s idea as far as I know. Not tooting my own horn, but I got a good personality, and these videos helped to show a different side to me as people think I’m unapproachable. I love the feedback from the series though, and I might do another season. I also see some rappers trying to steal the wave. But, they can’t do what I do.

Speaking of new content, you have a new project coming out soon, “Too Deep For Tears”. What does that title mean to you?

That title means a lot to me because I feel like when I’m too deep in a situation, I have to just take whatever the end result is. Can’t cry over spilled milk. It’s like, one of my cousins is doing 99 years for some sh*t. Before that he was serving time for something else, it’s too deep for tears. That situation is where I got the saying from, a lot of stuff that happened in my life are summed up in that saying, for real.

What type of stories and motivation can fans expect to hear?

I just find different ways to express and explain my experiences to people in my music.

I can’t do certain types of music so whatever I’m going through or been through, I just have to present in a way for the fans every time. Some of us share similar stories, so I have to just stand out with it and not sound like everybody else.

How would you say you’ve grown as an artist and person since putting out your debut project, “Preacher To The Streets”?

I’ve grown a lot. I’ve learned how to communicate with people more, be more understanding, I’ve been reading more, and it has helped me to hold proper conversations and expand my vocabulary. I don’t limit myself anymore. So, I do what’s necessary for my growth personally and for my career. When I’m recording, I’m finding new ways to deliver my message and my lyrics now. I’ve done a lot of self development since then. In addition to this, my favorite books are “How To Win Friends & Influence People” by Dale Carnegie, and “Think & Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.

What advice do you have for others looking to get it out the mud?

Just be yourself. Don’t let anyone try to determine who you are. Know yourself before you try to win people over. A lot of people run with this facade and have no real identity, but that don’t last long. Learn about who you really are before anything.

Anything else we should know before you go?

I’m still on that “FUCK A NIGGA MAMA AND GRANDMA” type sh*t, I’m from the Orange Grove Projects and a n*gga can’t stop me!

RINI Justerini Sandoval aka RINI is a Filipino-Australian R&B and Soul singer, songwriter and producer, who now resides in Los Angeles. Your music has such a nostalgic feel. If you could take it back to any decade, which one would it be?

I would say it was more around the 90s era, it’s like my music has that old school love feel to it. I’m also a 90s baby. So, I think majority of my influences were from that time because that’s what I would hear a lot when I was younger.

You’ve mentioned Frank Ocean, Kehlani and The Weeknd as influences. What do you love most about their music?

Frank is my biggest inspiration in writing music because I love how he tells stories in his songs and writes them in a way that listeners could paint a picture in their heads. With Kehlani and The Weeknd, I’ve always loved how their sound is so modern and clean. It’s like they brought something new to the R&B sound.

You recently relocated to LA. What sparked your decision to make the move?

I moved to LA mainly to work on my first album and to connect and find people I can work with organically.

What similarities and differences have you noticed between Los Angeles and Australia?

The weather for sure. Especially in Melbourne, we have 4 seasons a day. In LA, it’s always sunny and bringing good vibes. Also, there’s a big difference in culture and I’ve learned a lot about how they do things over in LA.

Since introducing yourself to the world, you’ve garnered the attention of millions. What were your intentions when beginning your music career?

I never really had the intention of being a full time musician. If someone told the young me that this is what’s going to happen then I wouldn’t have believed it. I’ve always loved music. But, when I started, I never had the intentions of blowing up or anything. It was really just something that I loved doing and sort of my way of expressing myself.

When did you know you were on to something great with your music?

It was probably when I released my ‘After the Sun’ EP and I managed to sell out 3 shows in Melbourne. I was blown away, but it was in that moment that I realized that people really are listening to me and they want to hear more.

How much or little has the internet played a role in your success?

I think it helped a lot in way where I was able to connect with producers and other artists and be able to work and share ideas online and also I think that music streaming platforms have completely changed the game in the music industry.

Everything is out there now and it’s so much easier to be recognized now compared to how it was back in the day.

Are you working on any new music we should keep a lookout for?

Yes, I have an album that’s coming soon and it’s going to be a whole vibe so yes definitely keep a lookout for it :)

This year has been a challenging and insightful one, to say the least.

What’s your #1 wish going into 2021?

I don’t really wish anything. This year has taught me so much and made me realize a lot of things about myself and what truly matters the most. I guess all I want for 2021 is to have good health, stay close to my family and friends and for my music to be heard and connect people even more so.

WesWILL Introspective in lyric, intentional in delivery, WesWill is an independent artist hailing from Cleveland, OH. Since the age of 16, the rapper has honed a unique style that combines tongue twisting flows and smooth crooning.

Much of the soul found in Wes’ music today derives from his upbringing. The sounds of Anita Baker, Sade and Toni Braxton filled his home as a child; church choir rehearsals and instrument lessons were a regular part of his schedule while growing up.

WALLIE THE SENSEI Straight outta Compton, Wallie the Sensei has been making a name for himself in LA’s underground Hip Hop scene. Wallie dropped his EP ‘No Love‘ in the beginning of 2020 with “Scandalous” ft. Mar & Yaahl becoming a fan-favorite.

It reached a following among LA artists (AD, Rucci, HittaJ3) in addition to the likes of Mozzy, DJ Carisma, and even Nick Cannon. The record was also added in rotation at LA’s Power 106.1. Wallie’s musicality stems from growing up singing in church choirs. He only started recording a few years ago and now is ready take his Compton roots to new heights.

How did growing up in Compton influence your sound and outlook on life?

Compton influenced my family almost completely, and affected the way we speak.

I have grown to adapt those elements and they’ve helped to develop my sound, and much more. Compton also showed me that life is short, and I have to see things a lot deeper than the average person.

So, you dropped your ‘No Love’ EP at the top of the year to much success.

How has life been different for you since then?

It has been changing at a considerable pace since then. I’m learning to get a grip on it actually as I was just going with the flow. The EP gave me a lot of looks, but I still have to keep it moving.

When did you discover music was your calling?

What type of vibe were you going for while making the project?

Honestly, last year (2019). I was getting tired of what I was doing before, and got tired of how things were going for me. I just decided then to get into music and see what happens.

I was really making those songs for myself in a way. I made a bunch of songs just for me. For example, I didn’t plan on releasing “Tarzan”, but for the rest of the songs that are out, I just wanted to show people the type of person I am in music form.

What is the meaning behind your stage name, Wallie the Sensei?

“Wallie” was given to me by one of my friends, as he kept calling that so much that it stuck to me. “The Sensei” part came from my younger days of going to Karate classes. I exercise patience, timing, and I’m able to see the positive outcome of a challenge. “The Sensei” was also derived from my personality as I tend to be a voice of reason or an overseer of things and situations.

Where do you want to take your career in the next 3 years?

I just want to push myself and see how far I can reach as an individual, and as an artist. I’m in a competition with myself at times, so my goal is to see how many more people I can touch, and how much more of an impact I’ll be making moving forward.

How do you define success?

Being at peace.

Honestly my musical taste is mad eclectic, I just love music!

Lately I have been super into Santana - ‘Abraxas’

What are your favorite memories of growing up in Southern California?

My childhood was pretty emotional, a lot of chaos was around me. The thing that always calmed me down was getting outside in the sun. That’s my favorite part about Southern California - the sun all year around.

Thinking back to your childhood, which albums had the most impact on how you view the world?

That’s a tough one but if I had to choose one, I would say ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’’.

Describe the moment you knew you wanted to go all in with your music career.

So, I went to a Talib Kweli concert and got to meet him backstage. At the time I was sort of flirting with the idea of trying to rap, but I hadn’t recorded a song yet. Back stage Talib asked me if I was a rapper, and I said yes. Then in the middle of his set he calls me on stage to rap with him. The adrenaline rush alone would make anyone fall in love with music.

What challenges have you faced along your journey?

To me my biggest hurdle for me was learning to take my pain and turn it into a positive vibe in music. My music when I first started was very angry and aggressive! It never served me and almost made me feel worse.

Music needs to be healing and therapeutic.

How were you able to overcome them?

Learning to love the word enjoy and not just enjoying life now when it’s good, but enjoying the journey.

“Enjoy Ya Life” has been a huge hit, reaching nearly half-a-million streams. What does living a full life mean to you?

Well, I’m still living my life so I’m not sure what living a full life will look like. But, if I had to guess I would say living life with gusto.

The track is also featured on your second album, “Enjoy The Disco”, which you turned into a short film.

What is the main message you want fans to take away from the project?

For me, it was more about showing other independent artists that we can do high quality content. We don’t need the label to control our output! We can compete with artists who get huge budgets to make a visual album. I did it with little to no budget. So, the lie they try to make us believe, that money equals quality is not allowed around me anymore.

Speaking of success, “Enjoy The Podcast” has been another hit.

What were your intentions when starting the podcast?

So, what’s crazy about that is I originally wanted to do a podcast for

fun and for my existing audience. I had no idea it was going to get the reaction that it did!

It’s amazing because it just provided a completely different audience than my music ever did. My next goal is to bridge them together.

In your opinion, what are the most rewarding and challenging parts of being a content creator?

The most challenging part is when you put your heart and soul into something, and it flops.

The most rewarding is when I get messages from people saying my art/music has helped them get through tough times. Really!? Some of the stories I get are so humbling and inspiring.

If you could do anything creative, time and budget no concern, what would it be?

I would make a feature film. I caught the bug from making my short film and I would love to see where that takes me.

What are you looking forward to the most in 2021?

Seeing my daughter grow and start to understand the world.

Coming from a musical background, what type of sounds did you grow up on?

Growing up, I listened to more hip-hop than anything else, but there was also highlife and whatever I got off radio.

How have these various sounds shaped your musical style?

Hip-hop influenced my writing style a lot, ‘cause I wanted to be a rapper before I even started producing. Highlife and afrobeats are heavy on rhythm so I try to take that as well and the rest depends on how I feel. I just go with the flow

You’ve also cited Drake as a huge influence. Which of his albums have had the most impact on you?

‘Take Care’ is my favorite Drake album.

What influence have you seen America have on the music scene out in Nigeria?

American music is really popular in Nigeria even with the preference for local sound. Hip-hop was particularly influential in earlier expressions before the sound became what it is now, but you can still see it in some videos and songs

What are your thoughts on the #ENDSARS movement?

The endSARS movement is probably the most relevant event of our generation so far. It’s the first time people across the country are speaking up together without political involvements.

I think it could only have a positive impact on how we move going forward.

Why do you think it’s necessary for artists to use their platform to speak on social issues important to them?

Sometimes, as artists, we feel burdened by calls to speak up on issues. Sometimes we even feel like easy targets, but the fact is we have a platform to amplify the people’s voice.

It’s important for us to not separate ourselves from issues that affect society ‘cause we’re also affected.

There’s always uncertainty and nervousness that comes along with putting yourself out there as a new artist. What did you tell yourself when you were just getting started?

I was just excited to finally get my music heard. I didn’t really get to be out there much ‘cause of the COVID lockdown so I didn’t know what to expect. But when I finally got out, it was more excitement than nerves. Things really happened quickly. I never pictured it this way.

2020 found you releasing the “Get Layd” EP to critical acclaim. Where were you at in your life while creating the project?

I recorded ‘Get Layd’ in my bedroom. I’d just moved to Lagos a short while back and looking to get started with my new label, get comfortable with the big city life and experiment with my sound. I got the time needed to do that and Get Layd happened.

I didn’t see it getting this crazy. I just wanted to show my range and do whatever I want on a song.

Your rise to top may seem sudden for some, but you’ve been at it for a minute. What role has building a solid team played in your success?

My team has been amazing all the way. They showed me sides of the music business that hadn’t crossed my mind before, but always trusted my process, offering guidance and making decisions together. I’ve grown and learned a lot from them.

Good music has the power to shift culture, spark movements, as well as brighten one’s day. Why do you make music and who do you do it for?

I make music for all music lovers, regardless of their preferred genre. I want my music to touch everyone and hopefully I can make a cultural impact.

The end of 2020 finds you releasing another EP, “What Have We Done”.

How does this one differ from “Get Layd”?

‘Get Layd’ is what it is. I don’t let it determine how I approach music. I always feel like I have more to express musically and I keep exploring ways to do that, so ‘What Have We Done’ is my next step in that journey and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.

“Timing Is Everything”

A

fter recording and releasing music for years, the peak of my career thus far came recently with an opportunity to record a song with the late Dallas rapper Mo3. I’ve worked with a few other industry artists, but sending a beat and waiting on the vocals from that artist to come back is nowhere near as inspiring as recording in the same room. As a 90s baby and music enthusiast, I appreciate the authenticity of working side by side with an artist and catching a genuine vibe over carefully placed 808s and instruments.

The opportunity originated with a show my guy Kelvin, owner of “The Lab Indy” was throwing starring Mo3. The show was originally set for March 28th, 2020, but due to the deadly coronavirus pandemic the show was postponed. That wasn’t the last cancelled date, as Kelvin the investor tried another date that he ultimately had to cancel as well.

In these past few months, I was building a business relationship with Kelvin and introduced him to my music. He was impressed with how I conducted myself business wise and when I told him I wanted to work with Mo3 he told me he would see what he could do. On the day of the show, I met Kelvin at the venue for sound check and I we revisited the topic of a collaborative session with Mo3 and it was really a waiting game. Nearly an hour or two after sound check I got a call to meet at the studio.

When I got there Mo3 was there with his Manager Rain, his DJ, DJ Zack, and other members of his team including DJ Da Don. Mo3 was in the process of shooting a video for a feature song he did with an artist out of Saginaw, Michigan, I believe. A dope record showcasing his singing and harmonic flow. After that we loaded up my record and when the beat dropped he instantly started bouncing to the 808s before he asked was this me. I replied “yea” and he said, “you gon’ make me rap rap on here”. He immediately went to the booth to begin laying his verse. No pad, no pen, all freestyle. And within 20 minutes he was finished.

We played the record back in the studio multiple times before we all had to leave because it was time to head to the venue for the show. No one would have predicted this would be the last time he graced the stage. A full crowd occupied the event lounge, as I and a few more opening acts blessed the stage before Mo3. His energy was felt through the building as the crowd sang every song he performed word for word. Initially I was surprised how the opportunity presented itself.

For example, the show being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we finally got a chance to do the show which opened a door for a collaborative effort that ultimately became what may be the last song he recorded.

Don’t let opportunities pass you by. Things might not work out when they are supposed to, but there is a reason for everything, including delays. Seize the day, and remember “timing is everything”.

Starring John David Washington, Robert Pattison, Dimple Kapadia, and Michael Caine, this movie was a highly anticipated one for the year. The science fiction action thriller finds Washington playing a CIA agent who manipulates the flow of time to prevent World War III. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was delayed 3 times. But, ended up being one of the first movies to be released in theaters after the pandemic shutdowns in the US and UK. With the holidays coming up, this would be great movie to watch when it releases on 4K, Blu-Ray, and streaming services later this year.
