Data Mining, Analysis, and Visualization Tracking Gentrification in Allegheny County 2019, Individual Work, for 48714 at Carnegie Mellon University Mentor: Daragh Byrne

Gentrification has become a buzz word not only in urban design and planning realm, but also among conversations of community meetings. In Pittsburgh, people are extremely cautious when new developments are coming to their neighborhood, concerning whether the economic development will end up displacing the original residents. While sometimes this kind of resistance let the community miss a golden opportunity of revitalization, sometimes a minor improvement in the neighborhood commercial district leads to wild displacement in which case the residents didn’t expect at all.

This project aims to quantify and visualize gentrification process in Allegheny County neighborhoods by analysing real-time housing price data and business data to show the neighborhood's affordability. Hopefully this will provide communities a tool to monitor their social and economy development, and make proper judgement in face of upcoming developments.

Wicked Problem Mapping Gentrification in Bloomfield 2019, Group Work, Final Project for 51-631 Design Thinking: Complex System Collaborator: Silvia-Adriana VASILESCU, Max KRIEGER Contribution: Brainstorming, Research, Writing Cities are breeding grounds for complex, interconnected systems. Sometimes, the emergent results are beautiful, other times, they become “wicked problems”, like gentrification. As residents of Pittsburgh, with the vibrant Bloomfield neighborhood a couple bus stops away, we decided to focus our attention on this wicked problem as its symptoms emerge closeby. In this paper, we tackled gentrification by examining it through a systems thinking lens. This lens allowed us to identify leverage points that suggested an indirect approach; one which seeds a self-organizing structure and allows the neighborhood to grow and flourish while staying resilient against external factors. It would be hubristic for a policymaker to assume that a wicked problem can be solved through direct, centrally-planned means. Those who recognize that the most effective solutions are emergent; coming from rules and interventions that aren’t forceful, but thoughtful, will shape our cities positively for decades to come.

Residential Courtyard The residential courtyards are arranged between Liberty Avenue (the commercial axis) and Bloomfiled Alley (the residential axis). These semi-public spaces continue the vibe of the vacant lots in Bloomfield, that are commons owned and shared by the residents.
