What is a Hyde Family Education?

Students go to school, families go to Hyde. In 1966, Hyde was the first school to be founded on character education. Founder Joseph Gauld soon discovered that the students who were most successful post-Hyde were those who had the support of their families. Gauld then instituted the Hyde Family Education program, and started to see amazing transformations in both students and families.

Today, called the Biggest Job Family Program, the curriculum is structured around parent journals for personal reflection, regional groups (where geographically possible) and on-

campus programs for the entire family.

International families are encouraged to participate by visiting the campus, video-conferencing, and attending off-site family workshops conducted

by Hyde staff.

What are Family Weekends and FLCs? The success of the Family Program in helping teens to discover their unique potential is having parents and guardians on campus three times a year. There are two required Family

At Hyde, students, parents, and faculty members all participate together in activities that inspire a deep level of self-discovery. In this way, home and school are in partnership to bring out the best in every individual and every family.

Weekends, one in the fall (October) and one in the spring (April). These weekends provide an opportunity to highlight student growth, work on family renewal, and reaffirm the mission of the school.

The third on-campus experience is called a Family Learning Center (FLC) retreat on a date of your choosing.

These take place in either the Family Renewal Center (FRC) on Hyde’s campus in Bath, Maine or at Lennox Lodge on Hyde’s Black Wilderness Preserve in Eustis, Maine.

How can I participate in a Hyde Family Education?

The family program is open to all parents and committed adults of Hyde students. Full participation involves a willingness to do one’s best. Parents who participate in the program have an opportunity to graduate with a Hyde Parent Diploma.
