Eliminating Early Decision

The New Trend Among Top Colleges

Mike Kaplun ‘08 This weekend, November 17 and 18, Hobart and William Smith Colleges are hosting the 2006 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship. Both the semifinals and championship will be played on McCooey Field. The field hockey action begins Saturday at 11 a.m. with Ursinus taking on Lebanon Valley. Ursinus earned its trip to championship weekend by beating number one-ranked Cortland 2-1 in the quarterfinals. The other semifinal features Bowdoin versus Messiah. Bowdoin comes in following a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over William Smith last weekend. Start time for the game is scheduled for 2 p.m. The NCAA Division III Field Hockey National Championship will be decided on McCooey Field Sunday, November 18 at 1 p.m. Prior to the championship game on Sunday, you can catch some of the best field hockey players in the nation face-off against each other in the NFHCA Division III Senior All-Star Classic. The all-star competition commences at 9:30 a.m. on McCooey Field. Among the senior

Harvard. Princeton. The University of Delaware. UNC. These are just some of the big name schools that in recent months have decided to drop their early decision admissions option. Early decision is a binding agreement between an individual and a school. If the student is accepted, he or she is obligated to attend that school. There are many advantages to the early decision option. If a student is absolutely certain of their first choice, it makes sense to apply early to one school and not have to deal with the application process four or five different times. Early decision is also beneficial to the student because the deadline is much earlier, in November as opposed to February. This way, if a student isn’t accepted to his or her number one school through early decision, he or she still has time to apply to more schools through the regular admissions cycle. However, there have been many negative aspects associated with the early decision process. There has long been the

all-stars featured in the classic is William Smith’s Sophie Dennis. In her senior season, Dennis recorded a team-high 70 points while leading the Liberty League champion Herons to the NCAA Quarterfinals. Dennis finishes her career with an incredible 217 total points. Congratulations to Sophie and the entire William Smith field hockey team on another fantastic season.

assumption that applying early to a school equates to a higher likelihood of being accepted, especially among top ranked schools. School administrators want to do away with those conceptions and create a somewhat more even playing field among applicants. Harvard President Derek Bok stressed that “early decision programs tend to advantage the advantaged,” noting that by eliminating this program, they hope to widen and diversify their applicant pool. Hobart and William Smith Director of Admissions John Young agrees with their decision, saying, “I can absolutely see why they did it.” He says that Harvard, Princeton, and other colleges dropped early decision in part to discontinue the trend that seems to favor the wealthy. He mentioned that dropping early decision will heighten the chances for students who are economically or educationally disadvantaged to be admitted to these schools. Young says his overall concern with early decision is the “pressure students feel” when
