“A hundred thousand welcomes!” — Coriolanus, Act II, Scene I

Dear Friend, We are thrilled to welcome you to our new home and the 2022 Season of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival! I have written many letters during my time as HVSF’s Artistic Director and I think it is fair to say that most of them mention the power of the shared experience that live theater provides. It is one of the things I love most about the theater — being in a space and a moment that will not be repeated, with friends and family and also with strangers. Plays under our big, beautiful tent offer a rare opportunity to celebrate what connects all of us. This season is extraordinary for lots of reasons. It’s our first season in our spectacular new home, and it’s also the first season since 2019 that we’ve been able to welcome full-capacity audiences, and produce multiple plays in rotating repertory again. Despite the fear, isolation, anger, division, and deep loss that many of us have experienced over the past two years, here we are continuing to come together and celebrate our shared humanity. Because the deep need to gather together to make sense of a bewildering world is part of what makes us human. It’s just what we do, and it’s part of how we find the collective strength to carry on. As you sit under our theater tent today, in HVSF’s beautiful new home, I invite you to take a moment to close your eyes and imagine what will soon be, thanks to Christopher Davis’s incredible gift. When I envision the years ahead, I see more chances to be present and connected, more experiences to gather our community, and more opportunities to dream. This is only the beginning for HVSF; we are designing and reimagining the possibilities of this 98 acre campus to serve as a vibrant hub for our local community, a year-round cultural anchor for the greater Hudson Valley region, and a model for environmental sustainability. We can’t do it without you. On behalf of our company of artists, our staff, and our Board, I want to thank you for being a part of our past, for rejoicing in the present with us, and for helping us envision our shared future. This theater belongs to you, and we are delighted you are here. Enjoy! Warmly, Davis McCallum, Artistic Director

“ Here’s much to do with hate, but more with love.” This most-familiar story is seen through a new lens as Director Gaye Taylor Upchurch brings us a bold take on the iconic, boisterous, poetic and above all, romantic tale of star-crossed lovers. With HVSF’s favorite longtime couple, Kurt Rhoads and Nance Williamson cast in the title roles, this revelatory age-blind production reminds us that, while youth may be only skin-deep, true beauty is a quality of the soul, and – in the end – love conquers all.

12 | Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival 2022

Director’s Note This summer marks my third time directing under the tent at Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, and it is always such a joy to work here. I love being a part of this community and experiencing the beautiful company that Davis McCallum and HVSF are continuing. And to get to work on Romeo and Juliet with its exquisite language and contemplation on love and with two of Hudson Valley’s most beloved actors, Kurt Rhoads and Nance Williamson (who also happen to be married in real life), starring as the teenaged lovers, is truly a dream. Romeo and Juliet is a story we think we already know. But in working on it, we’ve discovered so much more beyond our assumptions about this text and these characters. I am obsessed with the way the play irises in and out between the exquisite intimacy of Romeo and Juliet to the wider lens of the community they inhabit—Romeo’s friends, Juliet’s family life, and the structure of the community itself. The challenge of the close-up giving way to the wide lens and back again. For me, the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is not in its commentary on destiny, but in watching ordinary people doing their best and failing. Ordinary adults failing the younger generation. I cast a young person as the Prince—a young woman who can stand up to the town and say, No more. We are changing things now. They don’t truly listen to her until it’s too late. But the hope of the play is that they do, finally, after great loss, hear her. And, yes, Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. But it is a tragedy because we first experience the very real, healing and powerful force of love. One small moment I love that I’ve never noticed before is in Shakespeare’s Act II when Romeo rejoins his friends the morning after they crash the Capulet ball. He and Mercutio begin their wordplay sparring, besting one another with puns about sex and wits. They’re loving each other’s company, and Mercutio cries out that because Romeo is no longer pining over love, “…now art thou Romeo; now art thou what thou art in art as well as by nature.” Romeo has come back to himself. His friends recognize this. But we know something that his friends don’t yet know (and Mercutio will never know): Romeo is his full self and more because he has fallen in love with Juliet and she has fallen in love with him. And in that exchange of love for love, they have both discovered an infinite bounty within themselves. As Juliet says, “My bounty is as boundless as the sea/ My love as deep; the more I give to thee/ the more I have for both are infinite.”

With Kurt and Nance in the title roles we get to take it for granted that Romeo & Juliet truly love each other. So what else then can come into focus? And in watching Romeo and Juliet—even as we already know its ending—we get to celebrate and wonder at how miraculous love can be. And in witnessing a Romeo and Juliet played by Kurt and Nance who have already been experiencing that bounty as lovers for decades is both celebratory and a balm. We are living in uncertain and rocky times—but love can and should be celebrated. With Kurt and Nance in the title roles we get to take it for granted that Romeo & Juliet truly love each other. So what else then can come into focus? What does the play say about trying to find your way in community? What does the community lose by forbidding a love? And what does it lose by deepening the trenches of not understanding one another? What does the play say about deep love that is both given and returned? I invite you to sit outside under the tent and allow yourself to wonder at the infinite bounty of love in all its forms in this text: erotic love, the love of friendships, of family, the love of nature and of beauty, and of community. It’s all here for us in Shakespeare’s 400+ year old text brought to life by these extraordinary actors in 2022 under this tent in the Hudson Valley. Thank you for being here to share in this story with us. hvshakespeare.org | 13

“ Love never dies in memory.” In a not-so-distant future where the grid has failed, society has crumbled, and memories can no longer be stored on hard drives, a group of survivors come together to recreate their vanished world through the life-affirming act of telling stories under the stars. A love letter to live theater, and a hymn of survival and resilience (sung by America’s unlikeliest hero, Bart Simpson!), Mr. Burns is an exhilarating exploration of how the pop culture of one era might evolve into the mythology of another.

Director’s Note “The world is violent and mercurial – it will have its way with you. We are saved only by love – love for each other and the love that we pour into the art we feel compelled to share: being a parent; being a writer; being a painter; being a friend. We live in a perpetually burning building, and what we must save from it, all the time, is love.” — Tennessee Williams It’s tricky to write a program note for this particular play, because I really do not want to give anything away! One thing I do want you to know: Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play is not a play about The Simpsons. While some, particularly my children, may be disappointed to read that, I hope that many of you will be relieved. You really do not have to know a single thing about The Simpsons, now in its 33rd Season and the longest running episodic show in the history of television, to appreciate or enjoy this play.

Consider how the story of Romeo & Juliet was already centuries old by the time Shakespeare picked it up and turned it into a play. The play is a celebration of storytelling. In particular, it relishes the way that stories are passed along through time, even to the edge of doom — transformed by each teller, moving through various forms of expression, and endlessly reinvented. Consider, for example, how the story of Romeo & Juliet was already centuries old by the time Shakespeare picked it up and turned it into a play in 1592; and how since then it’s been reimagined and adapted as a ballet, and an opera, and dozens of movies, and a famous musical, and a movie of the musical, and recently another movie of the musical, and as a thousand other things, including as an episode of The Simpsons. Like an episode of The Simpsons, the play is in three parts. In the first act, we watch a group of people re-telling a story around a campfire. In the second act, we follow a group of people as they rehearse a play. In the third act, we are treated to a fully-staged performance of ritual drama, in song. If you view the play through that lens, I guess it’s a play about the power of theater to shine a light in a world that is often dark and bewildering. But I think the play is also about love, and the power of love to triumph over death. The first act is a set of individuals crystalizing as a group, a collective act of falling in love. The second act is a group of people who, though they love each other, are approaching the end of their time as a collective. The third act is a kind of apotheosis of that group, in which their resilience and creativity and love is expressed through the art that they set in motion, long after they are gone. Just as Shakespeare’s plays were written for the particular group of actors in his company, Anne Washburn’s play was born out of her relationship with The Civilians, an NYC theater company whose work I have now admired for 20 years. My friend Michael Friedman, who wrote the music you will hear tonight, was a founding member of The Civilians. He died in 2017. It has been lifeaffirming for me to be in rehearsal with his music the last six weeks, and I’m honored to celebrate his work in HVSF’s first season in our new home. Enjoy!

Director’s Bio Davis McCallum (he/him) Now in his eighth season as HVSF’s Artistic Director, Davis is a passionate advocate for the power of the arts to bring people together and create more interconnected and resilient communities. “ I realize the power that comes with showing people a different way of seeing the world.” In this intimate and exhilarating solo piece, Mohegan theatermaker Madeline Sayet travels to England to study Shakespeare, and in doing so, she traverses geographic borders, personal history, and cultural legacies, in search of a place to belong. Named as one of the “great artistic achievements during the pandemic” (Broadway World), Where We Belong follows Madeline’s personal journey of selfdiscovery, and traces the intertwined relationship between Shakespeare and colonialism, a relationship with deep roots along the banks of the Muhheakantuck, the tidal estuary colonially known as the Hudson River.

Content Transparency: This production contains flashing lights, depictions of racism, and discussions of borders, war, loss of language, residential schools, colonial theft of human remains and repatriation. An earlier version of WHERE WE BELONG was produced in London at Richmix and Shakespeare’s Globe in 2019, as part of Border Crossings’ Origins Festival, the UK’s only large scale multidisciplinary festival of Indigenous arts and culture.

Director’s Note “Nothing can be by itself alone, no one can be by himself or herself alone, everyone has to inter-be with everyone else. That is why, when you look outside, around you, you can see yourself.” — Thich Nhat Hanh Madeline is not alone on stage. It looks that way, and often it has felt that way to her, but at the end of the day, she has taught me this: that if there are no new ears to listen, then what’s the point? When Where We Belong premiered, at Shakespeare’s Globe in London at the Origins Festival, the ears of the audience belonged to her mother, her father, and many other characters she talks about: the professors from her PHD program, the academic at the British Museum, and just across the way at Southwark Cathedral, her ancestor Mahomet Weyonomon’s spirit, listening as well. The story was galvanized into a deep reflection of her time there and with these people, and the multiple journeys across time that she and her ancestors took to reckon with their colonizers. As her story has come back to America, every part of the development process has been to ask: what ears are here now and who will hear now? Guided by this driving question, she requested that we develop the story further with Native theater artists hailing from across Turtle Island to read her words. This gave Madeline the chance to hear her story in their voices, and their thoughts on what it meant to them became embedded into the story. That is what this story is: one that is becoming, as the audience shifts, Madeline shifts, time and the world is always shifting. So now. Here you are. The next ears to the story. When we listen we are needed; it is a fully engaged relationship. How will you become? How will you see yourself?

A Note from the Playwright In Mohegan culture, we have a symbol, the Trail of Life, that depicts the ups and downs of life, and the people you meet along the way. This symbol is embedded in much of the design of Where We Belong, because what you are about to encounter is a journey along the trail, no more no less. I hope that you embrace this story as a journey. That is what it is for me each night, as I learn different things about myself, my ancestors, and the world around me, each time I move through it. I don’t want listeners to worry about the history they may not know, or try to absorb all of the information, but rather to just let whatever resonates resonate, and hopefully to laugh a little. It’s not intended for you to remember everything. It would be too much, given how little most people are taught about Native nations. My hope is rather that you will dig into the questions that come up for me, and how they may relate to your own life. You see, this was never meant to be a play. I wrote it in 2018, to try to figure out some things about the lines drawn between people, and to piece myself back together. Since then, it keeps evolving, as the world around us continues to move. This is the first time this play has been performed outdoors, and even more powerfully, its first outdoor performances are here in Lenapehoking, a traditional travel route of my people. I am excited to learn how this story changes as its relationships with the river, the earth, and the sky prove even truer in this place. If after listening, you want to know more about some of the ancestors who come up along my journey, I will name some of them here — Uncas. Mahomet Weyonomon. Samson Occom. Fidelia Fielding. Gladys Tantaquidgeon.

What you’re about to witness is only one Mohegan story. Only my story. What you’re about to witness is only one Mohegan story. Only my story. And even beyond that only one small part of my story. A small and finite thing in the spectrum of our world. Today, we are in Lenapehoking, on the lands of the Lenape, Munsee, and Wappinger peoples. Nations with their own struggles, history, language, and arts that I hope this play leaves you ready to learn about as well. Kutápatôtamawush to the incredible team of artists, producers, crew, staff, and family that have made sharing this story with you possible. Something I could never have imagined as a kid. I hope coming along with me and sitting in my mind for a while, might help you see the world a bit differently. And for every indigenous person in the audience, know that your story is powerful and has as much right or more to be told on this stage.

Community Bake-Off — COMING FALL 2022 Created by the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel, the Bake-Off is a communal writing event in which writers are given a random list of “ingredients” to incorporate into a play (for example: a kitchen sink, a front porch, and a withheld secret) to help inspire creativity and give writers permission to play. Hudson Valley community members are invited to submit short plays to be considered. Between 5–7 of these plays will be selected to be performed by professional actors!

Professional Training An Educational Program with Professional Expectations The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival Conservatory Company is a performance-based training program for committed, early career actors considering joining Actors Equity Association, who have a passion for Shakespeare, and want to develop the skills necessary to create innovative, collaborative theater in extraordinary spaces. It’s an artistic home to train and take risks. Working alongside our nationally recognized acting company on and off stage, the five actors we will invite into the program this season will be offered an unmatched opportunity to enter the profession.

Tent Pole Commissions In an effort to offer diverse artists more opportunities to reimagine and recreate what is considered classical theater and to help inaugurate our new artistic home, we have launched our Tent Pole Commision Program. Through this program we commission theatermakers, the majority of whom identify as BIPOC to imagine new work inspired by the beauty of our new location. These writers, directors, designers, or creators will be provided the opportunity to cultivate new ideas through flexible developmental, financial, and creative support. HVSF has dedicated resources to the creation and inspiration of these works and supports development through funding artistic collaboration. Each work created will be considered for future mainstage seasons, or applicable visibility, depending on what is created. It is our hope that Tent Pole Commissions will be part of a larger cultural shift in the American Theater, rooted in belonging, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Casting a Spotlight on Education At HVSF, Shakespeare is not a static text written long ago and far away, but rather a present-tense experience of shared discovery and active play. We believe that Shakespeare’s plays speak powerfully to our world today, and our programs empower students to find aspects of their own lived experience reflected back to them in Shakespeare’s language, stories, and characters. Learn more about our programs for students & families, teachers, and young professionals at hvshakespeare.org/education.

In Memoriam Terry Teachout Terry Teachout was one of the American Theater’s great enthusiasts. He brought to the job of the cultural critic the joy of someone whose vocation is also their passion. Terry loved to laugh (his distinctive guffaw is legendary). He revered actors of great courage and physicality. And because he was also a playwright, he understood deeply the unique two-way energy that animates a great performance. Taken together, these things meant that Terry approached the job of the theatre critic with a special kind of openhearted wonder and delight. And day after day, week after week, he was able to convey that feeling to his readers through his writing. “Passion, I see, is catching.” Rest in Peace, Terry. You will be greatly missed by your friends at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival.

“Passion, I see, is catching.” —Julius Caesar, Act III, Sc 1.

Lars Kulleseid Lars Kulleseid was a friend to HVSF since our earliest performances, as his wife of more than 60 years, Marti Kulleseid, served as HVSF’s founding Board Chair in 1987. Lars and Marit moved to Garrison in 1964 and became deeply involved in local community organizations. Our local schools, environmental non-profits, and cultural institutions all owe them a debt of gratitude. In addition to being essential to the founding of HVSF, he was instrumental in building the Hudson Highlands Land Trust into a dynamic force for conservation in the Hudson Highlands. Additionally, Lars is remembered in Philipstown as a husband, father, patent attorney and athlete. All of us at HVSF will remember Lars and his family’s impact on making the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival what we are today.

“We know what we are, but know not what we may be.” —Hamlet, Act IV, Sc 5. hvshakespeare.org | 47

About Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival Now celebrating the summer season, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (HVSF) is a critically acclaimed, professional, non-profit theater company based in Garrison, NY. The Festival has established a reputation for lucid, engaging, and highly inventive productions staged in rotating repertory under an iconic, open-air theater tent. In recent years, the Festival has also ventured beyond the tent, touring its work to other venues throughout the Hudson Valley as part of its HVSF On the Road series, transferring productions to other theaters, engaging its community through radically participatory art-making, and reaching over 15,000 students and educators annually through our year-round Education programs. Over the years, HVSF’s exuberantly irreverent productions have gained a devoted following. Critics from The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Wall Street Journal have applauded the clarity, energy, wit, and imagination of our productions, and the unique and playful nature of the actor-audience relationship under the tent.

Every summer, over 35,000 friends and supporters come together under this tent to enjoy vibrant productions of the greatest plays ever written in one of the most unusual and exciting performance venues in the American Theater. Thank you for being among them this year. Philanthropist Christopher Davis has offered HVSF 98 acres of river-view property to become HVSF’s first-ever permanent home. This new site will provide HVSF the long-term stability of a secure foundation and will serve as a vibrant hub for the local community, a year-round cultural anchor for the Hudson Highlands, and a model for environmental sustainability in the performing arts. It will also allow for an expansion of artistic and community programming. HVSF is currently in the design and planning phases of creating its new home on this extraordinary property. With its long-time tent on the site in a temporary location for the 2022 season.

Our Mission The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival engages the widest possible audience in a fresh conversation about what is essential in Shakespeare’s plays. Our theater lives in the here and now, at the intersection between the virtuosity of the actor, the imagination of the audience, and the inspiration of the text.

A Brief History   HVSF was founded by Melissa Stern and Terry O’Brien in September 1987 with an outdoor production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Manitoga, home of industrial designer Russell Wright, in Garrison, NY.   The following year, Boscobel House and Gardens agreed to host HVSF’s mainstage season on the estate’s expansive grounds, and that summer’s production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It was performed under a tent overlooking the Hudson River.   Under O’Brien’s leadership, and with the enthusiastic support of our Board of Directors and community of patrons, HVSF grew dramatically. In 1994, we added a second show to our season. That same year, HVSF deepened its impact on the region by offering hands-on, performance-driven education programs to area schools. In 2004, we began to tour innovative Shakespeare productions to middle and high schools.   In 2006, HVSF acquired a spectacular, custom-designed, open-air theater tent with seating for 540, establishing a performance venue unlike anything else in American theater.   HVSF has served more than 500,000 patrons since our first season in 1987. Terry O’Brien led the theater for 27 years, directing more than 30 productions, and stepped down as Artistic Director in December 2013. After a nationwide search for his successor, HVSF’s Board appointed Davis McCallum as Artistic Director in May 2014.   In 2015, HVSF’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream transferred to The Pearl Theatre Company in New York, where it earned rave reviews and garnered the company’s first-ever Drama League Nomination.   In 2016, HVSF celebrated its 30th anniversary with its largest single project to date, a citizen-driven production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, followed two years later by a citizen-driven world premiere of Seth Bockley’s Rip Van Winkle; or, Cut the Old Moon Into Stars.   In 2017, the Festival produced its first ever world premieres — Kate Hamill’s Pride and Prejudice (a co-production with Primary Stages in New York) and Lauren Gunderson’s The Book of Will (co-production with the Denver Center Theater Company).   In 2019, HVSF went even bigger and bolder with its first-ever musical, Sondheim’s critically acclaimed Into the Woods.   In 2020, for the first time in the Festival’s history the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.   HVSF performed its final season at Boscobel House and Gardens in Garrison in the summer of 2021.   2022 marks HVSF’s first season on the site of its new home. The tent is placed in a temporary location while we move ahead with the design and planning phase of creating a permanent home on this extraordinary property. hvshakespeare.org | 49

The Future of HVSF After 35 years as tenants at Boscobel House and Gardens, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival now has its first-ever permanent home in the Hudson Highlands. In thanks to the extraordinary generosity of philanthropist Chris Davis, we will be creating a cultural campus on the 98 acres that surround you. The vision for the site includes a permanent, open-air theater venue, the transformation of dozens of acres of former golf fairways into native meadows, wildflower gardens, walking paths, picnic lawns, and open space for community gathering. The pinnacle of the site is an extraordinary view overlooking the North Gate of the Hudson River where you may have picnicked or toured today. Our ambition is to create one of the most extraordinary open-air theaters in the world, in one of the most beautiful and important landscapes in America, and we want this experience to be available to everyone. For that reason, we are designing the campus and its structures as models of inclusivity and accessibility, with an extensive institutional commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Meet the Hudson Valley Team Davis McCallum Artistic Director

Now in his eighth season as HVSF’s Artistic Director, Davis is a passionate advocate for the power of the arts to bring people together and create more interconnected and resilient communities. Under his leadership, HVSF established HVStories, a multi-year exploration of the people, history, and culture of the Hudson Valley; and Full Circle, a community engagement program inspired by 2016’s citizen-driven production of OUR TOWN. For HVSF, he has directed productions of Cymbeline, Richard II, The Winter’s Tale, Measure for Measure, and the rolling world premiere of Lauren Gunderson’s The Book of Will. Notable productions in New York include Greater Clements (LCT), Lewiston/Clarkston (Rattlestick – Drama Desk nomination for Best Play), The Harvest (LCT3); Stupid Fucking Bird (Pearl), Fashions for Men and London Wall (Mint – Drama Desk and Lortel nomination for Best Revival); The Whale (Lortel Award for Best Play, and Calloway nomination for Best Director) and Pocatello (Playwrights Horizons); Water by the Spoonful (Second Stage – Pulitzer Prize for Drama); and February House (The Public). Other NYC credits include Signature Theatre, The Acting Company, 13P, Clubbed Thumb, Play Company, Page 73, and the New Victory. Regional credits include the Denver Center, Dallas Theater Center, Old Globe, Guthrie, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the O’Neill, American Shakespeare Center, Williamstown, Humana Festival, others. A graduate of Princeton, he studied Shakespeare at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and trained as a director at LAMDA. He has taught acting and directing at Princeton and The New School for Drama. He lives in Cold Spring, and is the father of two sons, Thomas and Angus.

Kate Liberman Managing Director

Kate is honored to lead HVSF for her eighth season, in partnership with Davis McCallum. In her time at HVSF, Kate has supported the expansion of artistic programming to include HVSF’s first world premieres, co-productions, and off-Broadway transfers. She oversaw the company’s emergence from the COVID pandemic, as one of the first theaters to reopen in New York State, and she has been incredibly lucky to be able to steward HVSF to our new, first-ever permanent home. Previously, she served as General Manager at The Laguna Playhouse, where she worked on strategic planning, a fiscal turnaround, and capital improvements. Prior to The Playhouse, she served as Associate Managing Director at Yale Repertory Theatre, Managing Director of Yale Summer Cabaret, and Managing Director Fellow at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Kate was Associate Manager of Development at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC where she executed a successful $10M campaign for the 2008 festival, Arabesque: Arts of The Arab World. She holds an MFA in theater management from Yale School of Drama and an MBA from Yale School of Management, and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, summa cum laude. She is a recipient of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship and served as President of the Truman Scholars Association. In 2017, Kate received the Business Council of Westchester’s 40 Under 40 Rising Star Award and has been recognized for her work in the local community by the Putnam County Business Council and the Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce, where she previously served as president. Originally from the Boston area, Kate lives in Cortlandt Manor with her wonderful husband, Eric, and her son, Toby. 56 | Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival 2022

Terrence O'Brien

Founding Artistic Director Terrence O'Brien co-founded HVSF with actress Melissa Stern in 1987, and for 27 years, O'Brien was HVSF's artistic leader. During that time, he direct-ed more than 30 of HVSF's productions, garnered significant critical acclaim in major press nationally, and built a very loyal audience who enthusiastically returned to our tent theater year after year. He co-authored, with Stern, HVSF's original Statement of Purpose, he developed and evolved HVSF's signature performance style, and he remains deeply dedicated to the idea that Shakespeare's plays can be made accessible without sacrificing any of their depth and integrity. O'Brien was instrumental in developing the design of the HVSF tent theater and in integrating HVSF's acting style with the theater space. Over several years he developed an informal company of actors and artists, many of whom have developed lasting friendships, marriages, and in some cases, have had children. He performed his original one-man play, Popular Mechanics, for Bedlam in New York City, in Garrison, and in Gainesville, GA. Last May, he directed a cast of prisoners in his own adap-tation of On The Waterfront at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. He is currently adapting Investigating Sex into a theatre piece, and he'll be doing studio work on that project at the Baryshnikov Arts Center this summer. O'Brien is the director of the New World Shakespeare Lab in New York City, a group that seeks to evolve a more spontaneous style of acting Shakespeare. He and his wife, Jane Praeger, live in Manhattan with their daughter, Jenne, and son, Leo.
