Dear Knights Family,

The 2025–2026 school year is off to an inspiring start at Sacred Heart Jr/Sr High School. Walking through the halls, one can feel the pulse of faith, learning, and community that defines what it means to be a Knight.

Our weeks begin and end in prayer — starting with a 7-12 All-School Mass on Monday mornings at St. Mary’s Church, followed by 7:40 AM- Mass for students and staff on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Fr. John in our new school chapel, and ending with Adoration in our chapel every Friday, and countless quiet moments where students and staff pause to encounter Christ. Our new chaplain, Fr. Adam, has quickly become a joyful and steady presence, guiding retreats, celebrating the sacraments, and helping our students and staff deepen their faith. The Junior High Holy Fire Retreat and the powerful Jason Evert Assembly both invited students to reflect on God’s love and call to holiness in meaningful ways.

Academically, our students continue to shine. Sacred Heart proudly celebrates another National Merit Scholar, continued strong ARK (Assessment of Religious Knowledge) results, and impressive performance on state testing that places our students among the top in Kansas. Our dual credit and college course offerings are expanding, allowing students to earn college credits and explore new interests before graduation. With new curriculum in computer programming and robotics, hands-on learning continues to grow across all grade levels — sparking creativity, problem-solving, and innovation.

The spirit of excellence extends far beyond the classroom. The band room renovation now provides a dedicated and refreshed space for our talented students to make music that lifts hearts and fills our school with joy. Our Scholars Bowl team, already back-to-back-to-back state champions and a state runner-up, opened their 2025–2026 season in Belleville with another first-place finish. Last spring, the Knights also added another State Golf Championship to the trophy case, and the fall sports season infused excitement into the school year!

This year’s Homecoming Week and Grandparents Day celebrations reminded us of the deep roots and lasting friendships that make the Sacred Heart community special. Our House and Community activities continue to bring students together in service, fellowship, and faith — forming leaders who live out our mission: Spirit, Mind, and Body — Disciples on Mission.

Amidst all the growth, the Capital Campaign continues to move forward, with construction on the new fitness facility beginning and serving generations of Knights to come. Together with your prayers and generosity, Sacred Heart continues to build not just new spaces, but a future filled with faith and purpose.

We are deeply grateful for the support of our families, alumni, and friends. Every success, celebration, and shared moment of prayer reminds us that Sacred Heart is more than a school — it’s a community on mission, growing stronger every day.

On Mission,

What’s New at SH?

NEW BAND ROOM!

Our new band room, a highlight of the ongoing Capital Campaign, is officially complete — and we’re loving it! The updated space provides our musicians with a vibrant, inspiring environment to learn, practice, and perform. We invite you to stop by and see it in person the next time you’re on campus — it’s a space that will bring music, joy, and creativity to our students for years to come!

HEY, ALUMNI! DO YOU HAVE AN INSTRUMENT GATHERING DUST?

Following Mass, guests enjoyed activities across campus and the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Sacred Heart Fitness Center, a facility designed to serve generations to come.

During the ceremony, alumnus Mark Ritter, father of the late Tyler Ritter ’16, spoke movingly about Tyler’s love for athletics and fitness. Pictured were members of the Ritter family—Jacque Ritter, longtime SH math teacher, and Courtney Ritter, who attended SH, and is now the Cheer coach.

We heard from current Mayor Greg Lenkiewicz, who attended St. Mary’s Grade School, and spoke of his ties to our community along with his excitement for this new space. Chamber of Commerce CEO, Renee Duxler, shared the community workforce perspective and the support from the Salina area community that this project holds. Superintendent Geoff Andrews shared his joy for this project and Principal John Krajicek shared the history of the school and how we got to where we are now. We also welcomed the Sisters of St. Joseph, whose steadfast support has long made the school’s mission possible.

Construction will begin in early November. Watch our Facebook page and website for more detailed updates. To learn more about our Capital Campaign, visit www.salinacatholic.org

If you have graduated, but your instrument is still sitting in a closet, we’d love to give it new life! Our Band Department is accepting donations of gently used instruments to help current and future students discover the joy of music. Every donated instrument helps a student join band who might not otherwise have the chance. If you’d like to donate, please Dr. Koshgarian, Band Instructor at 785-827-4422 or richard.koshgarian@salinacatholic.org.

DAILY MASS + ADORATION

We are blessed to celebrate the use of our new Chapel, a beautiful space dedicated to prayer, reflection, and community. Daily Mass is now offered for students and staff every Tuesday and Thursday before school, celebrated by Father John Schmeidler. Each Friday, the chapel hosts Eucharistic Adoration, open not only to students and staff but to the entire community. In addition, Father Adam Urban generously offers the Sacrament of Reconciliation on a regular basis, providing students with the opportunity for spiritual renewal and peace. This sacred space has quickly become a cornerstone of faith life on campus — a place where hearts are quieted, grace is received, and God’s presence is deeply felt.

A STATE TITLE & A STATE RECORD!

They did it! The Sacred Heart golf team claimed its 10th State Championship title, setting a new state record in the process!

Congratulations to the 24-25 championship team — Cody Burr, Ben Marrs, Luke Newell, Ethan Newell, Will Tuttle, and Dominic Matteucci — coached by Patrick Newell and Chris Feil. Competing in McPherson against tough opponents, the Knights battled through a challenging first day sitting in second place, then roared back with determination to capture the title with an impressive team score of 300. What an incredible achievement for our players, coaches, and school community!

SPECIAL GUEST: JASON EVERT

We were honored to welcome Jason Evert, nationally recognized Catholic speaker and founder of The Chastity Project, to speak with our students. Jason’s powerful message encouraged virtue, respect, and authentic love, leaving a lasting impact on hearts and minds alike. His engaging and faith-filled presentation challenged students to live with purpose and integrity in today’s world. What an incredible opportunity for our students to be inspired by such a meaningful message!

SACRED HEART STUDENT NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALIST

We are proud to announce that senior Isaac Berndt has been recognized as a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist— an honor earned by less than 1% of high school seniors nationwide. This prestigious recognition is based on outstanding performance on the PSAT/NMSQT, reflecting Isaac’s hard work, dedication, and academic excellence. He now has the opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships to be awarded next spring. “We are just incredibly proud of Isaac for being recognized as a National Merit Scholar. This is truly a great honor for him and our school community. Isaac is an exceptional student who cares deeply about his studies, his school, and his community. He carries himself with quiet humility and the highest moral character, and we are indeed blessed to have him represent our school at the national level.” said Principal, Mr. John Krajicek. The National Merit Scholarship Program honors the nation’s most academically talented students each year. Isaac’s recognition adds to Sacred Heart’s tradition of academic excellence and faith-based education.

HOMECOMING ROYALTY CROWNED

We celebrated Homecoming in true Knight fashion! Join us in congratulating Cayson Ivey and Holly Bonilla, our 2025–26 Homecoming King and Queen. The royal court included Ema Morales, Ben Marrs, Skylar Douglas, Ben Disberger, Nicole Richards, Will Tuttle, London Wohlgemuth, and Luke Koland (pictured left to right). Masters of Ceremony Addison and Isaac kept the celebration running smoothly, and Father Adam presented the crowns. We couldn’t be prouder of Cayson, Holly, and the entire court—their joy, leadership, and school spirit shine through everything they do. To top off an already fantastic evening, the Knights brought home another win on the field! Truly, it was a great day to be a Knight!

SOPHOMORE BIOLOGY CLASS DIVES INTO RIVER SCIENCE A PEEK INTO A CLASSROOM

Mr. Green’s sophomore biology class took learning outdoors, partnering with The Friends of the River Foundation and the Lakewood Discovery Center for a hands-on river study at Oakdale Park. Students explored river ecosystems by canoe, measuring temperature, flow rate, turbidity, and depth. They also collected biological specimens using nets from the Mulberry Street Bridge and set minnow traps to observe aquatic life up close. In true Knight spirit, students ended the day by collecting trash along the riverbank— demonstrating both scientific curiosity and care for God’s creation.

Staff Spotlight: Kathy Schmidtberger

What brought you to SH, and what was your first role here? What is your role now? My family moved from western Kansas in the fall of 2004. My husband took a job teaching and coaching here. I started teaching 4th grade at Stewart Elementary, then went on to teach at Lakewood Middle School. I was the cheer coach at Sacred Heart for about 6 years and now I teach special education at SHJSHS.

When did you begin teaching at SH?

In the fall of 2008, I started teaching special education at Sacred Heart.

Can you share a favorite memory from your time at the school?

I have many favorite memories of Sacred Heart, from teaching to coaching cheer and track. I have been blessed to have gotten to work with great students. My favorite memories are always involving a student accomplishing something that they didn’t think they could. I also am privileged to see students develop from young junior-high students to graduating young adults who are ready to move into the world.

Is there a particular moment with students or colleagues that still makes you smile?

A few dancers/cheerleaders will remember the Salina Invitational Tournament when Mr. Muninger accidentally turned the music off during a half time routine. Some tears, but everyone survived!

How have you seen the school evolve during your time here?

Love ‘N Learn, St. Mary’s, and Sacred Heart are much more involved with each other than when I first arrived. Also the House and Community system has been a very positive addition to help increase student connectivity and involvement.

How has the school’s mission influenced your teaching experience?

I believe that a person’s spirituality is an important part of who they are. Students benefit greatly by being able to openly discuss morals and values in all aspects of the school environment.

What excites you about the school’s future?

What do you enjoy most about working with students?

I really enjoy getting to build a relationship with them over 6 years. Honestly, I think working with students is the best kept secret that the rest of the world doesn’t know.

Are there any moments when you saw faith or community come alive in a special way?

Honestly, every day. There are many big moments but the small moments are just as important as the big ones. Every day there are little instances in activities, conversations, Eucharistic Adoration, etc.

What inspires you to continue teaching after all these years?

The great students and teachers that are at SHJSHS.

If you could share one piece of advice with your students— past and present—what would it be?

Be constantly aware and present in your life. Live every moment!

What might people not know about you?

I grew up riding motorcycles. I play acoustic guitar and a little electric guitar. I am the second oldest child of seven.

The positive atmosphere of Love and Learn, St. Marys and Sacred Heart working together!

How do you hope your time here has made a lasting impact?

I hope students feel a connection to me and have positive memories of the time we have spent together!

Kathy with her husband Arnold and children Rayne ‘ 17, Dru, ‘13, and Katelyn ‘09.

A New Face on Campus

Salina Catholic Schools is blessed to welcome Father Adam Urban as our new school chaplain, joining our community with deep enthusiasm for faith, service, and student life. Father Adam brings joyful energy and pastoral care to his ministry — offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation, celebrating Mass, and providing formation opportunities that help students grow in their relationship with Christ.

“I love the diversity of ministry on a parish and school campus,” Father Adam shared. “I can go from Mass, to a funeral meeting, to lunch with kindergartners, and then high school ministry — all in one day! It’s constantly changing, but the proclamation of the Gospel and the work of Jesus Christ is always fulfilling.”

A native of Hays, Kansas, Father Adam comes from a proud Volga German heritage rooted in Ellis County. He has an older sister and his parents still call Hays home.

Father Adam attended Saint John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver, Colorado — an experience that deepened both his faith and his appreciation for God’s creation. “Saint John Vianney is the patron saint of parish priests, and it was a wonderful experience to study at a seminary under his intercession,” he said. “After growing up on the plains of Northwest Kansas, I truly gained a love for the mountains.”
