PROLOGUE

‘“the very condition of architectural form is to separate and to be separated” (Aureli, 2011, p. ix).

production + restriction 2022 04 23 02

It is within separation that the political, the conditions of how we relate to another, take palace.

Once a wall has been constructed,

who is allowed to pass through must be defined.

who is allowed to exist on either side, and influenced by the conditions of their separation,

From a wall emerge two spaces, prologue 03

and by those who inhabit them.

However, while their separation is enforced, and mediated by the wall, the wall is not the root.

It is our desires to separate and be separated which erects walls.

And, it is the specificities of these desires which determine the nature of our walls, and in turn determine and influence the spaces defined by them.

two destinct populations identified site acts as a territoralizing force separating the two

So, even though we have been tasked with the design of an art gallery, the reality of the situation is that we have two distinct, and based upon our own experiences, dissonant populations which do not wish to interact, including one which will most likely not want anything to do with an art gallery. Because of this, the question becomes “how can this gallery be designed in such a way that restricts contact, but benefits both populations?”

programming + concept

the programmatic spine

Our approach of addressing this challenge was the development of the programmatic spine: An architectural, and programmatic framework that aims to support, but restrict both populations.

programs provide for both populations but prevents direct contact

The first step in this approach was to reconsider our program. We’ve sacrificed some of our initial program space to be dedicated from the public, to the ‘less than public’. The less-then-public is a term that we’ve used to describe the kinds of people who are typically left out of the discourse revolving around public amenities, and are exactly the kind of people who are in need of the services provided by the drop in center.

What we’ve done is taken some square footage from our public oriented amenities, such as our cafe, retail, and seminar rooms and dedicated it to program aimed at serving those who live in the encampment, and frequent the drop-in-center, as they make up nearly as much of the population as “the public”.

program + concept

Based on our site visits, we determined 4 main points of perspective that best represent the two populations.

1. primary perspective views are determined

production + restriction 2022 04 23 012

program + concept

When we apply the parti of the spine literally onto the site, as both a visual and physical barrier two distinct territories emerge.

2. spine implimented as visual and physical barrier 3. barrier creates two distinct territories

program + concept

Its important to note here that the spine is not just restrictive in nature, but also generative. The spine as a framework both houses and filters our building programs in such a way that it creates a symbiotic and productive relationship between program and population. In doing so, the spine not only reinforces the natural divisive conditions of the projects site, and its social context, but creates a relationship which hinges on this separation. A relationship in which both populations create benefits for one another through the interaction and use of the buildings program. In the instance of our project, the desire to separate and be separated gives rise to the opportunity for indirect interaction and cooperation. This opportunity manifests in these eight related programs which are organized both physically, and operationally along the spine:

The bakery, located at the top of the spine, on the south side, offers no questions asked, cash in hand day labour. Those who need a quick pay check can show up early in the morning, work for a day and get paid at the end of their shift. They get cash, and potentially a reference. Goods produced by the bakery can then be sold on the north side of the spine by the cafe to those visiting the gallery, or walking along the riverfront.

The gallery’s coat check doubles as a clothing donation service, and works in tandem with the clothing bank on the south side. Clothing can be donated directly to the clothing bank via the coat check, and unclaimed clothing is automatically donated as well to be be given and used by those in need.

Located in the center of the spine is the multipurpose kitchen. This kitchen can during the day provide a food service to those residing in the encampment, or relieve pressure from the drop in center, and at night during events provide catering and bar services to the gallery.

Lastly, the seminar rooms, located at the east end of the spine connect operationally to the three temporary tiny homes found on the western end. Funds paid to the gallery by private parties booking space for seminars can be used to finance the necessary security, maintenance and utility costs of running the tiny homes program. Whenever a seminar room is booked, the tiny homes can be opened up for a month or however long the funds can sustain. These tiny homes are designed, like the bakery, to serve as a stepping stool. Someone who is in need of a short term residence can use one of these homes for a month while they sort out employment or long term living arrangements.
