MuarDistrictislocatedinthenorth-westJohorstate, Malaysia. The District constitutes Muar City and also Tangkak small district. It is located near a border with Malacca in the north, Segamat in the east and Batu Pahat in the south. The word 'Muar' is believed to originate from an estuary. Other possibility is that it is derived from a Hindu word namely “Muna" and “Ar" which mean “Three” and “River” respectively, reflects Muar River existence that flowed through these cities and also the longest river in Johor. Muar also is well-known as Bandar Maharani and was declared as the royal town of Johor. It is the fourth largest city in Johor and owns various tradition and cultures which is reflected in its heritage architecture such as pre-war architecture, temple and Chinese teahouses. Besides, Muar also named the cleanest tourist city in the Asean region through 2018ASEANTourismForum (The Star, 2018).

KampongAyer, or the Water Village (Malay: KampongAyer) is an area of Brunei's capital city Bandar Seri Begawan that is situated over Brunei Bay. 39,000 people live in the Water Village. This represents roughly ten percent of the nation's total population. All of the Water Village buildings are constructed on stilts above the Brunei River. Built entirely of stilt houses and wooden walkways, this cluster of 42 villages housing more than 30,000 inhabitants is the world's largest water village. The Water Village is really made up of small villages linked together by more than 29,140 meters of foot-bridges, consisting of over 4200 structures including homes, mosques, restaurants, shops, schools, and a hospital. 36 kilometers of boardwalks connect the buildings. Private water taxis provide rapid transit. Most of these taxis resemble long wooden speedboats.Fromadistancethewatervillagelookslikeaslum.Itactually enjoys modern amenities including air conditioning, satellite television, Internet access, plumbing, and electricity. Some of the residents keep potted plants and chickens.The district has a unique architectural heritage ofwoodenhomeswithornateinteriors.

Modern house on water village
Traditional houses builtoncolumnsontheBruneiRiverconsistofneighborhoodswith schools and mosques and that these houses can be moved from one side of the river to the other when necessary, for this they are built on light piles of wood. Being able to move to another place when necessary has also ensured that Kampong Ayer is protectedfromnaturaldisasters
Transportation is provided by motorboats on the streets where the walking paths are not connected to each other due to the fact that they are separated by wide waterways. Boats are usually made of wood and in the traditional local style and are oftenreferredtoas‘watertaxis’.
