About us The IELTS Workshop is an English teaching and IELTS training centre with modern facilities and up-to-date pedagogical methodology. Living up to our name - The IELTS Workshop - we always strive for perfection in every aspect, namely improving teaching quality of teachers and teaching assistants, and republishing teaching curriculum; both of which aim to create a multidimensional interactive learning environment to foster students’ love for English. We hope that, by doing so, we can push students to their limit and help them achieve their goals.

All of our teaching syllabi have been officially licensed by the Hanoi Department of Education as internally circulated documents and formally warranted by the Copyright Office - Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in the Education sector. Our IELTS trainers are required to have an 8.0 IELTS score in their possession with at least a year of formal English teaching, and to have undergone at least 2 months of probation, in addition to a prior 3 rounds of teaching demonstration and interviews on average. During their tenure, our teachers are also subjected to unannounced classroom observation for periodical quality assessment, and compulsory attendance at IELTS training events organised by the British Council. In case our teaching staffs want to receive postgraduate education (e.g. MA TESOL) or Cambridge certifications (e.g. CELTA/DELTA) in Pedagogy and Linguistics, they would be fully funded by The IELTS Workshop.

COACHELLA: THEN AND NOW A. The first-ever Coachella took place in October 1999 in California, the United States. Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen founded the festival, hoping to attract 70,000 fans with a wide line-up of artists, but the first Coachella did not make much money. The festival was canceled in 2000, but returned again in 2001 and has been viral ever since.

B. It now runs across two weekends, but it used to only be one day. When the festival returned in 2001, it lasted only one day. In 2012, the festival was held in two weekends for the first time, and this has continued until now.

C. Coachella was once a cheaper option for music-lovers. The entrance fee of the 1999 festival was $50, which included parking and a bottle of water. However, in recent years, music-lovers have had to pay about $500 for a general ticket, and $1000 for a VIP package.

A. Nobody knows who wrote the first letter or when, but we know that 4,000 years ago in Ancient Egypt people carried letters by hand over hundreds of kilometers. Very few people could write, so there were special people, called scribes, who wrote letters for everyone else.

B. In those days you didn’t need a stamp. The first stamp didn’t appear until 1840 and it cost just one penny. Nowadays one of these original stamps costs €375. Letter writing was so popular in the 1840s that they delivered the post several times a day.

C. An American company – Remington and Sons – made the first typewriter in 1871.

All the letters in the words “typewriter” were on the top line of the keyboard so that salesmen could demonstrate the machine more easily. Amazingly, the letters are still in the same place on the modern computer keyboard!

D. In 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell demonstrated a fantastic new invention called the telephone, nobody was very interested in it. The first fax machine appeared at around the same time, but it was so enormous that no one wanted one – in fact fax machines didn’t become popular for another hundred years.

E. Then there was the walkie-talkie, a small two-way radio first used by the US army in the 1930s. However, since they weighed around 13.5 kilos, talking was perhaps easier than walking! It’s hard to believe that email was only invented in 1971, and the first text message was sent in 1991. GREAT VACATION IN PARIS I just returned from the best summer vacation! It was so fantastic, I never wanted it to end. I have never been to France so I chose to spend eight days in Paris. My close friends, Jenny and Lisa, went with me. We had a beautiful hotel room in the Latin Quarter, and it wasn’t even expensive.

We’ve had great fun!

We visited many famous tourist places. My favorite was the Louvre, a well-known museum. I have always been interested in art, so it was a special experience. CAN ANIMALS BE NICE? A. We know people can be nice, but what about animals? Can they be nice to humans and other animals?

B. Scientists say that some animals are capable of being nice. Animals that live in groups - like foxes, chimpanzees, and elephants - follow rules. They have to follow rules to get along and to survive. However, animals can act nicely, even when they don’t have to.

Here are some surprising stories about animal behavior.

C. Most people usually walk away when someone is unkind to them. Marc Bekoff, a researcher at the University of Colorado, saw a female red fox do just that. The female fox hit a male fox with her paw because he played rough with her. When she walked away, the male fox showed her that he wanted to play nicely. He lowered his snout and rolled on his back. The female fox gave him another chance to see if he could act like a “gentleman”, and this time, he played more gently.

D. There is a scientist named Geza Teleki who studies chimpanzees in Tanzania. One day, Teleki hiked far away from his campsite. He didn’t have any food. Teleki wanted some fruit from a tree, but the tree was too tall, about 5 metres in height. A young chimpanzee watched him curiously as he tried to get something to eat. What could happen next? The chimpanzee climbed the tree, picked the fruit, and gave it to him!

E. An elephant in Kenya hurt his trunk. He needed help because he was not able to put food into his mouth. Researcher Kayhan Ostovar watched silently. He saw the hurt elephant show his sore trunk to a healthy elephant. The healthy elephant didn’t need any more information. He took a bush and put it carefully into his new friend’s mouth.

F. Hippos and crocodiles are usually good friends. They hang out together in rivers. But Karen Paoilillo, a wildlife expert in Zimbabwe, saw something surprising. One day, when a crocodile tried to bite the tail of a monkey that was next to a river. A hippo ran quickly to the crocodile and chased it away. Why did the hippo attack the crocodile while it was possible for him to ignore that and leave it that way? Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. It is the traditional color for wedding dresses in China and India. But many cultures associate red with danger. This is why we see it on emergency vehicles and warning signs.

Green is a color that makes people feel at peace because it’s the most common colour in nature. Green also symbolises safety. Because of this, it’s used in traffic lights to signal when it’s safe to go.

Blue is the most popular colour in the world. More than half the world’s flags have blue in them. It is also the most common color used by businesses. Many businesses use the colour blue to represent them in logos and advertisements. This is because blue helps us feel like we can trust them.

Yellow is the colour of taxis and school buses in many parts of the world because it’s the most visible colour on the road. Like red, yellow is also used to warn people of dangerous situations. Because it attracts attention, yellow is used for highlighter pens. The bright colour activates different parts of the brain that help the reader remember the highlighted text.

Violet is a light purple colour. It is one of the oldest colours in the world. There are violet cave paintings in France that are 25,000 years old! However, in some countries, for example Thailand and Brazil, violet is the·colour of death.

White is bright and can create a sense of space or add highlights. Designers often use the color white to make rooms seem larger and more spacious.

White is also the safest car colour because they are more visible on the roads.
