Water Management Your Guide to managing surface water, Marshalls Water Management Proposition. Marshalls has brought together the comprehensive linear drainage offer and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) to create a focused Water Management offer. The newest system to Marshalls is the Decathlon product range whose high capacity system utilises Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) technology, ensuring Marshalls remains at the forefront of providing solutions for all your water management needs.

Building Regulations Part H now require that all water management solutions are considered before traditional methods of rainwater disposal are supplied. In addition GBR10 of the Controlled Activities Regulations which supports the Water Framework Directive for Scotland, ensure Marshalls comprehensive range and experience fully cater for these requirements. Marshalls dedicated in-house Water Management Design Team, and experienced Water Management Design Engineers are available to offer face to face skilled project design, trusted advice and support on the most suitable means to manage surface water correctly.

Marshalls have also introduced the new 1 metre length Mini-Beany, a cost effective solution which is the most durable of its type on the market and is now easier, cheaper and faster to install. The new units are stronger and will not require a concrete haunching at the front (roadside).

Priora Permeable Block Paving Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems

An Important Issue n W  ith the traditional drainage infrastructure running at near capacity, alternative forms of water management are required to accommodate increasing levels of development. n P  art H of the Building Regulations requires developers to consider SUDS above traditional drainage solutions.

H3. (1) Adequate provision shall be made for rainwater to be carried from the roof of the building. (2) Paved areas around the building shall be so constructed as to be adequately drained;

(1) or (2) shall discharge to one of the following, listed in order of priority:

– an adequate soakaway or some other adequate infiltration system; or, where that is not reasonably practicable – a watercourse; or, where that is not reasonably practicable – a sewer.

n A  s a part of Scottish Law, GBR 10 (General Binding Rules) of the Controlled Activities Regulations (CARs), which supports the Water Framework Directive (WFD), states: “If the surface water run-off is from areas constructed after 1 April 2006 or from a construction site operated after 1 April 2006, these sites must be drained by a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) or equivalent. The only exceptions are: (i) if the run-off is from a single dwelling and its curtailage, and (ii) the discharge is to coastal water.” n With permeable paving, water drains through the pavement to a sub-base:

– Contaminated run-off water is dealt with environmentally

– Hydrocarbons break down naturally within the sub-base

– Heavy metals remain trapped at low concentrations

– Major spillage events remain contained within a small area and do not get channelled into local river ecosystems.

 ermeable Block Paving can be used in any scheme where standard concrete n P block paving is considered. For non-infiltrating subgrades, such as clay, the permeable pavement can be tanked using an impermeable membrane allowing rainwater to be harvested or attenuated. Conveyance can then deliver rainwater to an infiltrating system or sewer, with the capacity to attenuate the flow as required by design.

Priora Permeable Pavements is one surface water management system Marshalls can now offer.

n S urface water drains naturally at source, eliminating surface ponding and substantially reducing the risk of pollution and flooding in the sewer systems.

Marshalls commissioned a cost modelling exercise to understand the installed cost differentials between combinations of several Marshalls paving and drainage products.

 ue to the patented interlock of the block, Priora can be used in any n D loading application. n T he unique interlocking properties of Priora have enabled Marshalls to simplify the design and installation of its permeable paving. In many cases this has enabled a reduced depth of sub-base and minimised the need for intermediate restraints, saving both time and money. n Mistral Priora uses 86.7% recycled aggregates.

The project was undertaken by Gray Spurr Construction Cost Management Ltd, an independent Quantity Surveyor based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Gray Spurr used two case study examples to compare the three differing forms of construction:

Embankment Stabilisation Assists in the control of surface erosion of the banks of watercourses.

Firepaths Provides a discreet, traffickable surface for emergency vehicles. Coastal Protection Resists the wind blown migration of soil and sand and helps the establishment of vegetation and dunes. Car Parking Provides solutions to a range of parking applications specific to loading requirements. Roadways and Roadway Drainage Grassguard can be used for access roads and roadway lay-bys used in the event of vehicular breakdown. It can be applied to ‘harden’ the surface of French drains adjacent to roadways, and for areas suitable to which can be used for vehicular breakdown. n G  rassguard uses a sub-base of unbound material and a bedding course. The sub-base is to contain some humus type material to support root development and maintain growth during dry periods.

The Case for Linear Drainage Advantages

The growing demand for more cost-effective and less complicated drainage systems has led to modern linear drainage becoming the preferred choice amongst specifiers and contractors alike. Marshalls unique linear drainage systems combine the clear-cut advantages of linear drainage over traditional point drainage, with the benefits of a high quality, robust precast concrete product.

Significant Cost Savings by Reducing Carrier Pipes n Many schemes can utilise the inherent ability of a channel or combined kerb and drainage system to act not just as the traditional gully in point drainage, but also as the carrier pipe in storing and transporting surface water. n Any carrier pipes will be at a shallower depth with resultant cost savings. n Fewer expensive manholes required. n Less spoil to be removed from site.

Beany Block is the original combined kerb and drainage system which has been on the market for over 25 years. This tried, tested and proven system provides a unique, flexible and cost-effective solution to highway drainage requirements. Mini Beany, Traffic Drain and Max-E-Channel further extend the use of this product.

Versatile Beany Block is suitable for inclusion in highway schemes (although the system is likely to be most cost-effective in flat areas), reconstruction works where existing drainage systems have failed or where there is no existing surface water drain. Beany Block has been installed in schemes ranging from a few metres to several kilometres, from motorways and trunk roads to estate roads, service yards and car parks throughout the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. Despite its simplicity, Beany Block has many important design features which give it significant engineering benefits over alternative systems. Note Engineers wishing to incorporate Beany Block within a scheme should read this in conjunction with the Select Design and Install Guide or use our free, no obligation Design Service.

The System Beany Block consists of base units of standard channel section and top units of inverted channel section, with an elliptical aperture in the centre of one side face. When installed they form a combined kerb and surface water drainage system strong enough to withstand loadings imposed by both road and construction traffic. The system has excellent surface drainage efficiency which coupled with its large flow capacity, makes Beany Block superior to and much less expensive than conventional kerb and point drainage on many highway and non-highway schemes.

Cost Advantages Beany Block is ideal where specific problems would arise with conventional drainage methods for example: n Where there is insufficient fall to the outfall point.

High Capacity Performance n Beany Block is a high capacity system able to store storm water. Where limitations are placed on outfall capacities, Beany can help eliminate the need for storage reservoirs or balancing ponds.

 here, in flat areas, either numerous, closely spaced gullies or false falls would n W be required in the carriageway.

n Beany Block can be used in flat areas or steep gradients.

n Where long gully connections would be needed.

n Inlet apertures are 500mm apart, reducing running or fast flowing water on the carriageway and eliminating ponding.

n W  here surface water drainage pipes would conflict with service mains and cables. n Where ponding would occur at low points.  here traffic safety and control measures would be required when widening n W existing carriageway. Beany Block is likely to be more economical than conventional kerb/point drainage where carriageways have crossfall, few vehicular crossings or where a surface water drain would be required for highway drainage purposes. Cost savings have been significant on highway and non-highway schemes incorporating lengths of the Beany Block system. For comparison purposes, conventional methods should include the following as appropriate:

n Gullies.

n Manholes. n Kerbs. n Channel Blocks.

n Traffic safety and control (existing carriageways).

n T he overall construction period can be reduced as carriageway materials may be laid in a continuous sequence. Unlike laying conventional drainage, excavations are kept to a minimum without exposing the formation and sub-base surfaces to possible periods of adverse weather.

Low Maintenance n Beany Block will require periodic inspection and emptying of Silt Traps, Outfalls and Catchpits. The number of Silt Traps and Outfalls are likely to be fewer than in a conventional drainage systems. If a blockage does occur, it can easily be located and rectified by rodding or jetting from an access point or through a top block aperture adjacent to the blockage.

n Gully connections.

n Service diversions.

n S imple two-part system – straightforward to design and detail, reducing design times and cost. Easy to set out and straightforward to install.

n U  nderground cables and services can be avoided so contractual/insurance claims are likely to be much less than when laying conventional drainage.

Construction Savings n The Beany System combines water interception and transportation in one system. This minimises or eliminates the need for carrier drains, gullies and manholes, reducing construction costs and saving time.

Mini BeanyÂŽ Versatility Mini Beany Versatility Mini Beany is totally compatible with the rest of the Marshalls range of commercial linear drainage systems. The addition of traffic drain further extends the use of the Mini Beany system, allowing for flows at locations such as across junctions, entrances or at nosing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in fact anywhere that requires vehicle access.

Mini Beany Junction Detail The T Junction unit is used where there is a requirement to form a T junction with the base channels. Mini Beany to Traffic Drain Mini Beany can be used with Traffic Drain where the drainage run continues but the kerb line finishes. A smooth channel invert ensures undistributed flow.

Mini Beany to Kerb With the same profile, this simple detail will occur at the top or bottom of Mini Beany runs. The access cover is large enough to allow access for maintenance or cleaning. This detail allows for a silt trap or outfall to be located at the transition.

Mini Beany to Cover Plate The system has been specifically designed so where base units and cover plates are used to carry flows under carriageways or vehicular crossings, a minimum of 150mm of road material can be laid above the units to prevent damage and reflective carriageway surface cracking.

The Decathlon Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) channel system has been used in many applications throughout the UK and internationally for over 30 years. From busy service yards and rail ports with severe dynamic transport loading to motorways and commercial outlets, the system has proven itself many times over. The in-situ lid becomes monolithic with any concrete slab on completion and the Heelguard top units give a stunning architectural finish. The use of Decathlon has been shown to be highly cost-effective by reducing run sizes and number of runs due to its exceptionally high flow capacity. Five different Decathlon channels are available ranging from the Decathlon 150 to the Decathlon 600. A range of precast concrete top units, GRC lids and attractive Heelguard top units are available for each channel system. Decathlon has been successfully installed at 360Âş radii and general installation is straightforward. Detailing is simple and inexpensive as the channels can be easily cut on-site to suit requirements such as for inlet pipes, e.g. rainwater down pipes. The GRC channels have been developed in association with the University of Sheffield over many years and offer unique flow characteristics.

Max-E-Channel Slot Drainage System

n M  ax-E-Channel utilises the same base units as the Beany Block system combining with Max-E-Channel top units to form a linear drainage system which is laid level with the pavement surface. This high flow capacity system offers the choice of top units of various materials and load classifications. n Max-E-Channel top units come in the following materials:

– Hydraulically pressed concrete

– Reinforced concrete

– Fabricated galvanised steel

– Cast iron

n T he appropriate top unit is then bedded onto any of the 4 Beany base units being 205mm, 295mm, 365mm and 630mm whose details can be found on page 158. n T his forms a robust linear drainage system suitable for draining large paved surfaces varying from pedestrian precincts to heavy duty industrial areas and highways. Versatile n The various Top Units are easily interchangeable, ensuring easy transition from one type to another where performance requirements vary within the same scheme.

Max-E-Channel is a high capacity system able to store storm water. Where limitations are placed on outfall capacities, Max-E-Channel can help eliminate the need for storage reservoirs or balancing ponds

Max-E-Channel System is proven on all types of highway and hard landscape areas

Max-E-Channel can be used where there is minimal or no longitudinal fall for cost-effective drainage

Access Cover and Frame A heavy duty cover frame is available for use with Outfalls and Silt Traps to allow for inspection and maintenance.

As Max-E-Channel is compatible with Beany Block, it can be used where continuous drainage of the carriageway is required at vehicular or road crossings

The system has been specially designed so that, where Base Units and Cast Iron Top Units are used to carry flows under carriageways or vehicular crossings, the Base Unit maintains line and level under road crossings helping to keep construction time and cost to a minimum

Range of Top Units can be selected in all loading classes, this enables specifier/contractor to use Max-E-Channel in any given scenario

The high inherent strength and durability of the system can: • Allow complete compaction of surfacing materials adjacent to the channel during construction • Withstand de-icing salts and freeze/thaw effects reducing maintenance and increasing service life

The use of Max-E-Channel simplifies the design levels of the adjacent pavement areas allowing easier setting out, straightforward pavement construction and good ride over qualities

The manufacturing process enables tight dimensional control. This produces consistent units for ease of on-site construction

Max-E-Channel will require periodic inspection and emptying of Silt Traps, Outfalls and Catchpits. The number of Silt Traps and Outfalls are likely to be fewer than in a conventional system. Occasional jetting out of the system may be required in certain instances

Special Finishes Conservation Max-E-Channel A silver-grey coarse textured finish top unit, manufactured with granite aggregate, complements perfectly areas of high architectural, historical and scenic value. Textured Max-E-Channel An exposed aggregate textured finish on the visible faces of the top units is available providing high aesthetic qualities where the granite aggregate finish is not required.

Landscape Drain Slot Drainage System

Marshalls Landscape Drain is a linear drainage system for areas where a more aesthetic drainage solution is required to complement the adjoining paving. Not only is it effective for removing surface water, it performs almost without trace as the concrete or stone top units can be designed to blend with the hard landscaping materials. The top units used in the Landscape Drain are 125mm long with a 6 x 110mm slot at one end only.

How The System Works Landscape Drain comprises a top unit and a channel unit. The top unit is dished and slotted at one end and is available in a range of colours, finishes and materials to complement the extensive Marshalls paving range. Coupled with the range of channel units, this leaves the designer scope to incorporate the linear drainage system discreetly into any landscape scheme. Where The System Works Utilised in a wide range of projects to date, from pedestrian areas and car parks to town centre developments and landscape schemes. Loading application to C250 can be achieved and in some instances a D400 application can be achieved by speaking to our Design Team who will advise on a modification to the installation detail.

Flexibility in installation results in either 6mm or 12mm wide slots being achievable.

Birco is a high quality linear drainage system combining robust concrete channels with a range of grates to suit all loading applications. Birco linear drainage system is to intercept, store and transport surface water in a cost-effective and efficient way. The Range The Birco range is extensive utilising six different systems: n Birco Lite.

n Birco 150.

n Birco 300AS. n Birco Shallow*. * Where limited channel depth is critical, Birco Shallow is ideally suited and available in 100, 150, 200 and 300mm channel widths. Channels Birco channels are manufactured in high quality, precast concrete using the most up-to-date production techniques. All channels incorporate rolled galvanised steel edge angles firmly cast into each channel to position and attach the appropriate grating. n Birco Lite and Birco 100 have channel invert widths of 100mm. n B  irco 150, 200 and 300mm systems have channel invert widths in mm equivalent to their designation.

Various Outfalls can accommodate 100mm, 150mm and 225mm diameter discharge pipes.

n G  rating of galvanised steel, stainless steel, cast iron (grey and ductile), and aluminium are available in the load classifications as defined in BS EN 1433: 2002.

Outfalls To complete the system, outfalls must be provided to discharge the water collected by the channels. A range of inline, side and end outlet and junction outfalls are available, all trapped and roddable as standard.

Gratings The wide range of grating materials, profiles, colours and loading capacities available, allows Birco to provide a solution to almost any drainage problem:

Birco linear drainage is straightforward to install:

Inbuilt Falls To complement the standard constant depth channels, Birco Lite, Birco 100, 150 and 200 Channels are also available with in-built gradients.

Channels with removable gratings provide continuous inspection and access for maintenance. Birco outfalls are trapped and roddable as standard. This will reduce maintenance time and costs.

• Robust concrete Birco channels are highly resistant to impact damage on site during the construction phase. This results in reduced breakages and reduced waste.

Birco linear drainage has a high flow capacity. Inbuilt fall capability provides efficient drainage to flat areas or will enhance its high performance on sloping sites. ‹ Birco Linear Drainage, Emirates Stadium, North London

n C  ast iron (grey and ductile) are offered in a variety of profiles – ribbed (straight or diagonal), wave or ellipse. The ellipse pattern can be further customised with the addition of bespoke emblems or logos. Made to special order for high profile projects. n R  ibbed gratings are profiled to ensure water cannot cross the rib but is discharged through the slot into the channel. n H  eelsure cast iron gratings, having a 6mm narrow slot width, are designed to minimise the risk of trapping high heels, as well as providing an improved riding surface for small-wheeled trolleys, pushchairs, etc. n C  olour coated cast iron gratings which resist surface oxidisation and offer greater design flexibility are available. n S olid covers can be supplied for alternative uses where gratings would not be suitable.

Birco linear drainage with its inherent one-way crossfalls provides a neater appearance than the undulating surface profile of point drainage. Extensive range of gratings profile, texture, colour and material is available to the specifier. Birco linear drainage will contribute to the overall aesthetics of any scheme.

Inherent strength of the Birco precast concrete channel, together with the cast-in steel edge angle means that the Birco system only requires bedding and haunching, rather than a total structural concrete surround for most applications. This alleviates the need for on-site formwork and expensive concrete finishes associated with other less robust systems.

Birco Lite Grid Drainage System

n B  irco Lite is a robust general purpose linear drainage system for applications up to and including Load Classification C250 when used with the Birco Lite grating.

 irco Lite has an invert width of 100mm as Birco 100. Birco Lite benefits a wall n B thickness of 30mm and thinner galvanised steel angles, resulting in this unit being the lightest Birco channel within the range.

Birco 100 Grid Drainage System

Build-up Planner The flow chart can be used to flexibly design Inspection Chambers to specific site requirements. Beginning with the Chamber Section, the Inspection Chamber can be built up by following the flow upwards to the appropriate cover.

Deeper Inspection Chambers can be designed typically using C or D Sections alone, or used in conjunction with the smaller Chamber Sections with the appropriate reducer.
