2024 Hutton Annual Report

Page 1

TOGETHER, WE EXIST TO BUILD LIFE INTO OUR TEAM MEMBERS’ DREAMS, CLIENTS’ VISIONS AND COMMUNITY’S FUTURE.

On December 23, 1783, after leading the Continental Army to victory over the British, George Washington resigned his commission as commander in chief. At that time, relinquishing power like this was unheard of, but in doing so, Washington set the tone for our budding republic by displaying a new kind of leadership to the world.

In 2024, leadership at Hutton also experienced some re-imagining, naming presidents for each service offering – Jeff Hohnbaum for Hutton Facility Services and Hutton Energy Services, Kyle Blasdel for Hutton Development, and Andy Buessing for Hutton Design+Build. This decision empowers our leaders to take ownership of their areas and drive growth but keep servant leadership at the core.

One of my favorite pieces of art is called “General George Washington Resigning His Commission” by John Trumbull. It’s hanging in the U.S. Capitol Building and it depicts the defining scene of Washington relinquishing his power. That image of Washington has come to define my perspective on leadership.

At the end of 2024, our Business Support team moved into a new building on the west side of Hutton’s Wichita campus. There, Hutton’s accounting, marketing, IT and people operations teams joined me in supporting Hutton’s success. This new space is just one more chapter in the Hutton story, and choosing the art for this new space was a fun opportunity for us to tell that story in a more abstract way.

With these leadership changes, my thoughts continue to return to Trumbull’s painting and that idea of servant leadership. So, this is Hutton’s version of that painting, adapted by the uber-talented Wichita artist Lindsey Kernodle. It greets us each day and sends us off each night. A constant reminder of what leadership looks like, and of what this monumental year has meant to Hutton and so many more.

The stories you’ll read throughout the pages of this annual report are evidence of that big year – new projects, people and capabilities that will continue to push us forward, and I’m so excited to be a part of it.

HUTTON’S ELEVATE VISION

We partner with the most forward-thinking entrepreneurs and visionaries in our markets. They count on us to multiply their impact through our diverse talent and unique services. This is fueled by our team members. We develop and empower each other to be lifelong learners, champions for our clients and difference-makers in our communities.

IMPACT MULTIPLIERS

EMPOWER NOMAR CENTER

Empower seeks to reignite the predominantly Hispanic Wichita, KS, North End community by providing resources like education and workforce/small business development that empower their community. Their newest initiative is the Empower Nomar Center – a commercial kitchen

and multipurpose classroom and office space designed and built by Hutton Design+Build. It will be rented out to community members as a culinary resource for homegrown businesses. The new North Wichita center opens in 2025, with additions to follow.

Members of the community gathered to break ground on this new space, creating a “guacamole” of sorts as people from all walks of life celebrated this project together. The guacamole isn’t just a metaphor – the leadership team actually made guacamole to represent the different flavors of people who added their own ingredients to the collaborative effort.

A CATALYTIC CAMPUS

The 471,000 SF Wichita Biomedical Campus is expected to strengthen collaboration and support healthcare learning in Wichita.

Hutton Design+Build started construction on this catalyst for bioscience research and learning in downtown Wichita as a joint venture with JE Dunn Construction. Designed by Helix Architecture + Design and CO Architects, the school is expected to serve as home to 3,000 students and 200 faculty and staff – in collaboration with Wichita State University, the University of Kansas and WSU Tech.

The project’s benefits extend beyond strengthening healthcare education in Wichita. The dedicated biomedical campus will bolster surrounding businesses by bringing high-paying jobs and skilled professionals to the area and increasing local spending and longterm growth.

RAISING READERS RIGHT

Fostering curiosity, exploration and learning is essential to building strong, vibrant communities. Literacy lays the foundation for lifelong learning and opportunity, which is why Hutton Design+Build is proud to be designing and building renovations and expansions to three Wichita library branches.

Rendering of Angelou Library Branch

ALFORD LIBRARY BRANCH

Included in a three-branch campaign for the Wichita Public Library is the Alford Branch. With construction beginning on the branch in January 2025, our team worked side by side with community leaders on the Wichita Public Library Master Plan to provide upgrades for libraries across Wichita.

ANGELOU LIBRARY BRANCH

The Maya Angelou Branch broke ground on an addition to the west of the library and an interior remodel and reading room. The updated branch will continue to celebrate Maya Angelou’s legacy while creating a vibrant new space for the community to enjoy.

ROCKWELL LIBRARY BRANCH

The Rockwell Branch is undergoing a transformation that honors the building’s midcentury roots while meeting 21st century needs. In July 2024, they broke ground to celebrate the expansion and renovation of the original library, built in 1976. The exterior features new parking stalls and a drive-thru, while the interior addition includes new teen and children areas – all designed and built by Hutton Design+Build.

SERVING THE STARKEY FLEET

Starkey’s new transportation facility was built to maintain a fleet of more than 100 vehicles. Founded in 1930 with a mission to support people with intellectual disabilities, Starkey helps nearly 500 people independently work, live and engage their community.

This 10,500 SF transportation facility was built by Hutton Design+Build to support a fleet that transports hundreds of people to and from jobs, programs, medical appointments and education activities.

RENEWABLE DAIRY FUELS

Over the past couple of years, Hutton Design+Build has had a team in Cimarron, KS, helping to build a renewable natural gas facility for Amp Americas called Renewable Dairy Fuels (RDF) Gray. The team has provided project management and site supervision to the project, even self-performing much of the work. In 2023, we completed phase one, which involved installing three 80-foot-diameter anaerobic digester foundations, requiring more than 700 yards of concrete.

In the second phase we have installed over 7,900 feet of piping materials and critical equipment and an additional 600 yards of concrete. This project also included a duct bank stretching more than 800 feet and an underground grid, with installation selfperformed by Hutton Design+Build team members. Upon completion of this project, the facility will process cow manure from a neighboring dairy, digesting it into methane gas for everyday use.

MAJOR MILESTONES

CELEBRATING TEAM MEMBER ANNIVERSARIES

We wouldn’t be who we are without the incredible people behind the work we do. This year, many of our team members reached a milestone anniversary: 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 years. Their dedication drives our success and fuels the way we serve our clients and communities.

A particularly special milestone was reached by Paula Soliz, who received her 25-year portrait to be placed on the wall next to the other Hutton team members who’ve reached 25 years of service to Hutton. It’s more than just a number – it’s years of commitment, collaboration and growth.

A MESSAGE FROM CEO BEN HUTTON ABOUT PAULA:

We joked at the anniversary lunch that Paula has had a hand in millions of projects, and while the actual count might not be quite that high, the list does include a huge percentage of the work we’ve done through the years. In addition, she has shaped so much of the “how” of what we do in our office and accounting processes. Most recently she’s been helping Jimmie Soliz and Jeff Hohnbaum build out our Facility Services and Energy Services offerings, and it’s her knowledge and expertise that help me trust that all is – and will be – well there.

TEAM MEMBERS CELEBRATING ANNIVERSARIES

Every year, we come together to honor and appreciate not just the 25-year team members, but everyone who has reached a significant milestone in their careers at Hutton. Congratulations to everyone who retired or has reached a milestone anniversary:

AND THE AWARD GOES TO…

Thanks to the excellent work of the Hutton Design+Build team, these two projects were awarded industry honors for our exceptional architecture and construction expertise.

YOUNGMEYER RANCH FIELD STATION

Hutton Design+Build was selected by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to receive a national award. The Small Project Award was given to the project team of the Youngmeyer Ranch Field Station – a research facility for Wichita State University in the Kansas Flint Hills. The Youngmeyer Ranch Field Station is an entirely off-grid research facility serving as a state-of-the-art lab and living quarters, harmoniously blending with the natural tallgrass prairie landscape.

This award was presented to Hutton and other members of the project team at a ceremony in Washington D.C. and is only the fifth national award for a Kansas project in AIA’s 167-year history. Emily Taylor was the design team lead and architect for Youngmeyer. In addition to the national AIA award, Youngmeyer also won awards from AIA Kansas and the Association of General Contractors (AGC) of Kansas. It was also featured in international design publications ArchDaily and Dezeen.

THE IMMACULATA CHURCH

The Immaculata Church in St. Marys, KS, was designed by Civium Architects and built by Hutton Design+Build in partnership with BHS Construction Inc.

This project came together thanks to the hard work of hundreds of team members and subcontractors. That work was recognized by AGC of Kansas, who awarded the Immaculata Church with the Award of Honor.

Congratulations to everyone whose hard work brought this 65,000 SF place of worship to life.

HUTTON’S NEWEST DEVELOPMENT

You’ve heard us talk about “meeting clients at every point in their facilities journey.” Well, our new Hutton Development capability is just that – a new point in the journey where we can meet the needs of clients.

“Our goal is to partner with clients to bring more projects and growth to the areas where Hutton exists,” said Kyle Blasdel, president of Hutton Development. “We’re going to build projects that propel our communities forward in a way that traditional development often overlooks. Our projects will be designed, developed and constructed by Hutton for the long term.”

Hutton Development brings new energy to communities by revitalizing aging buildings and turning them into spaces that serve the needs of the region. From converting historic properties into unique office spaces to re-imagining structures for restaurants, housing and more, Hutton Development collaborates with Hutton Design+Build to bring fresh ideas to unused buildings.

Kyle Blasdel, president of Hutton Development, is working to bring new energy to communities through reimagined spaces.

THE YORK

Hutton Development revitalized a former American Legion building on St. Francis Street in downtown Wichita. Now titled The York after Alvin York, one of the founders of the American Legion, this building has a rich Wichita history that our team worked hard to maintain, while updating it for modern clients to fill with their own custom build-out.

SOLAR SOLUTIONS

With more than two years under our tool belts, Hutton Energy Services has served clients all over Kansas. Recent tax incentives and the growing affordability of moving to clean energy have created the perfect conditions for industrial and commercial clients to add solar power to their facilities. Here are a few of those clients we served:

1. HABCO SALINA

This is a 140 kW roof-mount solar array that Hutton Energy Services installed for HABCO Inc. in Salina, KS. HABCO is an industrial contractor that provides services to clients in the grain, feed, biofuels, plastics, ceramics and fertilizer industries.

2. HILLSBORO INDUSTRIES

This solar panel installation was at Hillsboro Industries — a premium truck bed and trailer manufacturer in Hillsboro, KS. These panels produce around 180,000 kWh of energy annually, which is more than $20,000 worth of electricity.

3. HUTTON FACILITY SERVICES

Installed on the roof of our new Hutton Facility Services building, this 11 kW system is estimated to offset 75% of the building’s energy usage with these bifacial panels, which means

the sensors on the bottom can absorb energy reflected from below. They’re also tilted at 5% to optimize production in the summer when bills are the highest and free up roof space for additional panels.

4. MORRIS HILL ELEMENTARY

Morris Hill Elementary in Fort Riley, KS, immediately saw the benefits of this installation, as these solar panels offset approximately 25% of the school’s annual electrical usage.

Ever wondered how a solar panel collects energy from the sun? Hutton Energy Services technicians Jacob Reese and Levi Kindel made this video for the kids at Morris Hill.

MAINTAINING RELATIONSHIPS

Did you know that Hutton Facility Services is one of the largest facilities teams in Kansas? Our team of licensed and experienced professionals work with clients on preventative maintenance, handyman services and facility projects.

1. PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE & PLANNING

Hutton Facility Services offers a single solution for our clients’ facility needs. Licensed in-house service technicians handle anything from HVAC and electrical repairs, to scheduled preventative maintenance on their most expensive systems.

In addition to these services, we often partner with clients to complete small remodels and renovations:

2. GROW PLANT BAR

These handrails that double as a guardrail system are made up of stainless steel cables and vertical bollards. After a traffic accident caused major damage to Grow Plant Bar’s patio, Hutton Facility Services installed this unique system three feet into the ground to ensure the safety of patrons.

3. USD 259 VERIZON INNOVATIVE LEARNING LABS

The classrooms renovated for USD 259 Wichita Public Schools are a significant upgrade for the district. The Verizon Innovative Learning Lab – a new model of classroom – provides access to 3D printers, virtual reality head gear and programs, and robot programming software for middle school students to experience educational opportunities in an engaging way.

4. STUDIOS ON MARKET

This tenant improvement project was completed in a retail space under Fidelity Bank’s parking garage. The Studios on Market, designed by Shelden Architecture, has 17 individually customizable rentable spaces that can support a variety of cosmetology professions including hair stylists, barbers, aestheticians and spray tanning.

NEW HEIGHTS FOR HUTTON

Growth was a common theme this year at Hutton. With newly designed and built offices, expanded locations and additional services, we continue building on a foundation of excellent service to reach new heights.

HUTTON SALINA ADDITION

Only three years after acquiring, designing and renovating our current Salina office, that team’s growth has necessitated an expansion of the space. Luckily we knew a team that could design and build an office addition quickly.

HUTTON FACILITY SERVICES & HUTTON ENERGY SERVICES

The Hutton Facility Services and Hutton Energy Services teams continue to grow, so we designed and built a new office and shop at our Wichita Headquarters campus. The new dedicated space allows us to keep providing proactive and reactive services to clients.

HUTTON HEADQUARTERS WEST

The Wichita office campus has welcomed a third office to its Delano home. This building was designed and built by Hutton Design+Build to house the Business Support team, who serve all of our locations and capabilities.

LIFELONG LEARNERS

SPRING LEADERSHIP TRAINING

The 2024 Spring Leadership Training cohort spent months sharpening their leadership skills alongside fellow Hutton team members. This program brings together emerging leaders across Hutton’s field teams and offices to develop business and leadership skills while fostering camaraderie. It culminates in a capstone presentation, where each participant presents in front of the other trainees. Congratulations to the 2024 graduating class!

MANAGEMENT TRAINING FOR FIELD LEADERS

These training events for Hutton Design+Build project managers, superintendents, project engineers and other team leaders exist to keep our field leaders sharp. For this year’s session, our team heard from guest speaker Dan Oblinger about navigating difficult conversations to equip them to be better negotiators with the people they lead.

Also covered in this day-long workshop were presentations on safety, QA/QC, warranty issues and a subcontractor panel. Hutton regularly invests in the personal development of each team member. Often, that investment starts at the top, and these training meetings help us partner with our leaders to cultivate an attitude of lifelong learning for everyone.

MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS

For National Suicide Prevention Week, Hutton jobsites held a safety stand-down where leaders from multiple organizations delivered a message to team members, informing them of the many available resources to prioritize their mental health.

These crews and companies took a moment to stop their work to recognize the often-invisible safety concern of mental health for many people.

On jobsites, Hutton regularly stresses the importance of wearing protective glasses and headgear, but there are just as many resources available to help team members protect their mental health, too.

AGC of Kansas developed this video in collaboration with multiple Kansas construction companies and organizations to highlight the importance of mental health.

STRESSING SAFETY: OSHA TRAINING

Hutton team members had the opportunity to participate in OSHA-10 training sessions in our McPherson and Wichita offices.

OSHA-authorized Outreach Training helps workers meet safety standards in the construction industry, and offering two separate training sessions at Hutton offices gave our field and office team members the chance to earn their safety certification.

Hutton is committed to a culture of safety that extends beyond the jobsite, starting with every team member, both in the field and in our offices. By empowering our team members with knowledge and tools, we’re reinforcing a proactive, safety-first approach that stays with us long after the job’s done.

ALL THINGS THERMAL

Hutton serves clients best when we are constantly teaching ourselves new skills to expand our services. Two team members who exemplify this commitment to lifelong learning are Jimmie Soliz and Derek Pyeatt, who became Level I certified thermographers to better serve our clients through the use of infrared thermal scanning technology.

Thermal imaging cameras help Hutton Design+Build identify hidden issues like insulation gaps, moisture/air infiltration and electrical faults during construction and maintenance. By proactively addressing these problems, our team can identify potential issues that are invisible to the naked eye, ensuring longevity for our projects.

THE HUTTON INTERN EXPERIENCE

Every year Hutton interns actively participate in the design-build process in a hands-on learning environment. They receive a comprehensive and immersive experience, whether working as designers, builders or both.

Multiple Hutton offices and jobsites across Kansas hosted interns, allowing them to see different stages of the construction process firsthand. From visiting jobsites to working on jobsites of their own, they learned from Hutton professionals about what it takes to manage a project from start to finish.

Finally, each year’s internship program is capped off with a formal presentation, allowing interns to share with Hutton leaders what they learned and how they planned to apply the knowledge to their future careers.

CASTLE PARK PROJECT

Hutton Design+Build summer interns spent a day helping the community rebuild Castle Park, a playground in Augusta, KS.

The chance to earn experience while revitalizing this town staple was a unique opportunity for our interns to grow and give back this summer.

CLIENT CHAMPIONS

HOW WE CELEBRATE!

We do what we do simply because we love it. It’s fun to effect change, and one of the easiest ways to do that is to design and build beautiful spaces for our clients. Whether we’re getting started or wrapping up, we just can’t help but celebrate along with our clients for these big wins.

Groundbreakings, beam signings and ribbon cuttings are just some of the ways we step away from the work and have a little fun. The following two pages show just a few of the celebrations we took part in with our clients. Because who doesn’t like a party?

FUSING FORM AND FUNCTION | A DESIGN-BUILD CASE STUDY:

HUMLICEK DENTAL

Dr. Ashley Humlicek, a forward-thinking Wichita dentist, believed her new dental office and spa could be both functional and comfortable – a space that emphasizes relaxation for patients without sacrificing efficiency.

“Until I found Hutton, no one really got my vision. It was in our very first meeting; it was the first time I had that ‘aha’ moment where I knew I was picking the right team,” said Humlicek.

What followed was a collaborative design that emphasized aesthetics without rejecting functionality.

EFFICIENCY BY DESIGN: AN EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACH

A major function of healthcare design is maximized efficiency. From floor plans that reduce staff movement to equipment placement that allows for easy access, functionality is a top priority from the start.

“In dental design, flow is the highest priority of the design. Dr. Humlicek challenged us to create a comfortable environment for her patients and staff,” said Hutton Design+Build lead designer, Catie Shaffer. “We broke down the floor plan into three

zones: staff, patient and team, which really helped to formalize the space planning. And each of those spaces was given an intentional aesthetic through color, artwork and other finishes.”

CREATING THE DENTAL SPA EXPERIENCE

While the layout ensured that essential areas — such as sterilization, lab and storage — were centrally located, the design also included an intentional color scheme of light tans, clean whites and soothing blue greens. Reminiscent of sandy beaches and ocean water, the interior design turns a routine dentist visit into a relaxing vacation.

“When people come to the dentist, it’s typically very sterile. It’s white, it’s clean. Which isn’t a bad thing, but sometimes that can raise their anxiety,” said Dr. Humlicek. “And in a profession where people already don’t want to come to us, it was really important for me to create a calming environment for people to enjoy.”

THE POWER OF INTEGRATED DESIGN-BUILD

Dr. Humlicek’s dental practice is a testament to how form and function can coexist in healthcare design – and how the design-build process can make that happen.

A PROMISING PARTNERSHIP WITH FORT RILEY

Throughout 2024, Hutton Design+Build’s industrial and commercial teams have been hard at work in Fort Riley, KS, to improve its existing infrastructure and build and remodel some of the military installation’s facilities.

UPGRADED CONCRETE INFRASTRUCTURE

A major portion of this partnership has involved upgrading Camp Funston’s civil infrastructure. The work we’ve done aims to increase drainage of stormwater for major weather events across the camp.

Despite the challenges of harsh weather, we were able to build this gatewell for Fort Riley from the ground up. Using the largest pipe Hutton Design+Build has ever worked with (96” reinforced concrete pipe), this gatewell is expected to eradicate some of the camp’s existing flooding issues.

Building this half-mile ditch with a 3:1 slope required a bit of innovation from our industrial concrete team. This 45-feet wide concrete-lined ditch was an important infrastructure addition for Fort Riley, helping route rainwater to prevent flooding, and won the Innovation of the Year Elevate Award shown on page 22.

COMPREHENSIVE RESTORATIONS & RENOVATIONS

A significant portion of our work focused on transforming outdated buildings into modern, functional spaces. This included carrying out full-scale interior and exterior repairs, addressing storm and water damage, and upgrading mechanical systems for long-term efficiency.

DEMOLITION FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

Strategic demolitions cleared space for new opportunities while improving the overall infrastructure. Our team dismantled multiple buildings, balancing efficiency and care to prepare sites for future enhancements.

SPECIALIZED PROJECTS WITH HIGH IMPACT

From the restoration of historic monuments to the replacement of playground surfaces at child development centers, we delivered tailored solutions to meet the unique needs of Fort Riley. These projects required attention to detail and a commitment to ensuring high-quality results.

FINANCIAL SUCCESS

EQUITY BANK TOWER

Equity Bank’s corporate headquarters, once an easy-to-miss presence along East Kellogg in Wichita has been completely transformed by Hutton Design+Build. The high-rise — previously blending into the urban landscape — now stands out with a bold exterior that showcases the bank’s evolving identity.

Our project team needed to overcome challenges like a tight schedule and budget, focusing resources on key features such as the ground floor, accent corner and 8th floor visor. Most impressively, all this was achieved with minimal disruption to tenants.

MERITRUST INTERIOR UPGRADES

Meritrust Credit Union has a long history of serving the Wichita community – one that began nearly 90 years ago. To honor that history and bring new life to their headquarters, Meritrust called on the Hutton Design+Build team to dream up different elements to elevate the existing design. Bringing color and life to the space, we added a history wall in the central lobby of their Wichita headquarters. And, we installed custom built-in shelving and a board member wall display for their executive floor to showcase their talented team.

PRIORITIZING POET’S PEOPLE

For the third phase of their campus, POET Biofuels’ 37,000 SF office was designed to complement their existing buildings. This design-build addition includes a lounge and break room, lots of extra office space for their growing team, and an outdoor patio area overlooking the pond – among other amenities like customized water features and lighting schemes.

Every detail was crafted to enhance the employee experience, and this project reflects their forward-thinking, team-first approach. The new space is designed to foster collaboration and create the best environment for their team to thrive as they continue to grow.

WESTERN KANSAS HIGHLIGHTS

Our office in Garden City, KS, is home to many talented builders who strive to develop their community through their work. Over the course of these projects, Hutton Design+Build invested in Western Kansas, creating spaces that do more than meet a client’s functional needs – these projects support the area with upgraded facilities for health and community. Check out these two projects finished in 2024.

1. BIBLE CHRISTIAN CHURCH

This 19,000 SF addition to Bible Christian Church has made a major difference to this Garden City house of worship. This project includes expanded parking and a new sanctuary with 500 seats, lobby, offices and restrooms, bringing much-needed space for growth. This church is a major community hub for the area, and we are proud to have brought their vision to life.

2. KEARNY COUNTY HOSPITAL

The Kearny County Hospital project was unique, because much of the renovation happened while the emergency department was still in use. To keep staff and patients safe, we built barrier walls and used a negative air pressure system to keep harmful debris away from patients. The project included new patient rooms in the in-patient wing and a revamped wall layouts and finishes throughout. Since 2007, Hutton Design+Build has completed four projects with the Lakin, KS hospital.

SALINA-AREA PROJECTS

From airport hangars and art museums to public safety facilities, our team was hard at work completing important projects for the community. Check out just a few of these Northern Kansas projects.

1. LINDSBORG PUBLIC SAFETY

Hutton Design+Build designed and built a complete interior rework of the City of Lindsborg’s Public Safety Building, which houses the police station and volunteer fire department offices. The renovation for the 1980s building included modernized conference, interview, evidence and training rooms, as well as new officer lockers/showers. The exterior also received a face-lift to modernize the façade and highlight Lindsborg’s unique heritage.

2. SALINA ART CENTER

The Salina Art Center is a downtown staple, and now their exterior is instantly identifiable with a new sign, art feature and exterior renovations. We also completed the construction for the art center’s interior remodel, which included a custom welcome desk, new retail and office spaces, a commercial kitchen, and maintenance and mechanical updates.

3. SALINA HANGAR

Our team’s commitment to quality is evident in the details of the Salina Airport Authority Hangar 626, but the innovation is where the project shines. We installed a state-of-the-art Clean Agent Fire Suppression system – a first for Kansas airports. This foamless system extinguishes fires quickly and efficiently without leaving any residual damage. This technology elevates safety standards for the Salina Airport and beyond.

SUPPORTING EDUCATION

Hutton and education go hand-in-hand. We’ve been partnering with educators across the Midwest for decades to create new school and university facilities – all to enhance learning opportunities for students everywhere.

1. MORRIS HILL ELEMENTARY

Just before the start of the school year, we finished the new Morris Hill Elementary School in Fort Riley, KS, increasing the school’s capacity to 570 students.

2. LEARNING LAB WICHITA

Beginning in early 2024, Hutton Design+Build worked with Alloy Architecture, Stand Together, Khan Academy and Learning Lab Wichita to build out the 2nd floor shell space of the Union Station Express building. This work Included some innovative thinking by our team to overcome obstacles and get the school opened in time for the fall semester.

3. LAMAR SCHOOLS

Lamar Schools’ brand-new sports complex in Lamar, CO, includes a turf football and soccer field, a 1,500-person grandstand with stadium lighting and modern scoreboard, and a new fieldhouse with public restrooms and locker rooms.

4. MARCUS WELCOME CENTER

The new Marcus Welcome Center at Wichita State University has a fresh, modern look that incorporates the school’s iconic black and yellow branding. It also includes an updated interactive display hallway.

5. FAITH ACADEMY

Faith Academy’s new 15,600 SF school in Wichita, KS, was completed just in time for the start of the school year. Designed and built in 12 months from the start of the design to the movein date, the school has 18 classrooms for pre-K through 12th grade students.

6. USD 259 WICHITA PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Hutton Design+Build completed six projects for USD 259 in Wichita, KS, including this freezer project to support the district’s nutrition services team to store food for students across the district.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS

COMMUNITY COMPETITION

Nothing brings a community together like a little friendly competition. Hutton team members laced up their sneakers and softball cleats to test their skills at community events.

CLASH OF CORPORATIONS TRIATHLON

Luke Amend and Eric Duerksen competed on behalf of Hutton at the Clash of the Corporations – a McPherson, KS, triathlon with United Way of McPherson County. Eric swam and ran in the event, and Luke managed the bike leg of the race.

HALSTEAD OLD SETTLERS SUMMER FESTIVAL

For Halstead’s Old Settlers Summer Festival, Hutton sent a team to participate in the annual Great Race – a 12-leg relay that combines running with roller blading, canoeing, swimming, free throw shooting, biking and tricycle racing. We also brought a softball team for their annual tournament.

SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY

We mean it when we talk about the importance of investing in the places where we work and live. We don’t just do this through designing and building new spaces; we do it by working side by side with the community to build a better future for everyone.

HUTTON ADOPTS-A-HOME WITH STARKEY

Starkey’s Adopt-A-Home program allows volunteer groups to roll up their sleeves to clean up the exterior of Starkey group homes. Team members spent a Saturday clearing gutters, washing the exterior of the home and cleaning up flower beds.

SALINA’S FALL FIX UP

Our Salina team members got their hands dirty for the Salina Fall Fix Up. Team members spent the day cleaning up and mulching the landscaped areas at the Saline County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol & Rescue Squad building.

MATH IN THE WILD

Sedgwick Middle School students visited Hutton for a lifelong learning opportunity, where our team guided them through realworld applications of math like measuring and budgeting. There were also lessons in basic hand and power tools.

HVAC TRAINING

Todd Reed of Hutton Facility Services and Dusty Ast from Hutton Energy Services taught Wichita Public Schools students the ins and outs of electrical work and HVAC to help them prepare for an upcoming SkillsUSA Championship competition.

CONCRETE SOLUTIONS

Before the start of the school year, Hutton team members volunteered to pour concrete and put together drop-off lane signs for Isely Traditional Magnet. Evan Brand, Kyle Haworth, Hunter White and Kaleb Konda spent the morning as differencemakers, helping create an organized pickup lane for parents.

CARING FOR HUMANKIND

Hutton team members Gladys Aranda, Maureen Bryand and Teresa Jones served on the committee for HumanKind’s annual fundraiser along with Ben and Erin Hutton. While they helped coordinate the event, other team members contributed by building, setting up and tearing down a backdrop wall for the stage. Thank you Nate Wood, Darius Savarro, Peyton Swigert, Trevor Soliz, Levi Kindel and Cameron Carruth.

JUNCTION CITY PARK PROJECT

Hutton Design+Build Team members spent a weekend setting up the main structure for a new Junction City park shelter. With the help of our team, students from K-State’s chapter of AGC and USD 475’s CTE volunteered their time and gained hands-on experience by participating in the building process.

INVESTING IN INDUSTRIAL ARTS

After donating a table saw to the Horace J. Good Middle School Industrial Arts program, Hutton Design+Build’s Western Kansas Leader Andy Fahrmeier joined USD 457 Garden City Public Schools’ district administrative staff to see some of the incredible projects the students have been working on. We’re always excited to help support students’ hands-on learning experiences and to play a part in their education.
