U NDERWATER P HOTOGR APHER O’N EILL HPL partnered with ESSDAK to bring awardwinning nature photographer Michael Patrick O’Neill to present a program October 2. Following a slide show of beautiful undersea creatures and fish, which he narrated,O’Neill talked about his diving equipment. At left, he is showing his goggles.

Above, O’Neill holds up his swim fins. One young audience member asked, “Can you put those on?” and he kicked off his shoes, donned the fins, and demonstrated how to walk heel-to-toe on land. He commented that he believed that was the first time during all the programs he’s given, that he has actually been asked to wear the fins. Left, Simon Wamsley is shown wearing a diving vest while O’Neill describes the items he keeps in the pockets and how the vest is used while diving. He also had his waterproof camera on hand as well as a floatation device that marks his location in the water while he is diving. Thanks to the Friends of the Hutchinson Public Library for sponsoring Michael Patrick O’Neill’s visit to the library!

accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey—first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother’s family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, confronts the bitter truth of his father’s life, and at last reconciles his divided inheritance. More information pending about Kansas Reads in a few weeks.

DREAMS FROM MY FATHER : A Story of Race and Inheritance, by Barack Obama. New York : Three Rivers Press, c2004, 1995. In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father—a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man—has been killed in a car
