The summer of 2011 found upper school girls once again engaged in scholarship, service, and significant work experiences across the country and around the globe, partnering with organizations that include People to People, Global Works, and the Confucius Institute at the University of Memphis. Through cultural and linguistical study, service to those in need, and the spirit of entrepreneurship, these dedicated young women extended Miss Hutchison’s vision of self-reliance, integrity, and excellence to the far corners of the world and into their own neighborhoods. Forty-six girls traveled abroad in language immersion and service trips, visiting Australia, Fiji, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Spain, and New Zealand. Gabrielle Arkle ’12, Alex Lenschau ’12, Katherine Garcia ’13, Phoebe Norcross ’13, and Shields Thompson ’13 spent two weeks exploring the culture, language, and history of China on a trip sponsored by the Confucius Institute. While in Beijing, the girls toured iconic sites such as the Confucius Temple, the Forbidden City, and Tiananmen Square.
