Upper School Artists Triumph

With a broad brush stroke, Hutchison claimed the most awards of any independent school in the 2011 Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards. Limited to 25 submissions, 18 works by upper school artists won Gold Key, Silver Key, or Honorable Mention honors when the winners were announced on January 14.

Top awards went to Gina Sposto ’11 for It Was Nice Meeting Me, receiving Best In Show and American Visions honors, along with the Vookles-Thorn Scholarship and the Harwood Award. Gina also claimed the Senior Division Painting Award and American Visions Award for Of The Air and the Work on Paper Award for The Bears In My Mouth. Allie Watkins ’11 won Best Portfolio honors for Sculpture, in addition to the Magna Bank Scholarship and Kitty Sting Honorarium. Wallace Ann Sorrells ’11 won the Glass and Ceramics Award for Spring Teapot. Evelyn Reed ’11 received the Senior Division Director’s Choice Award for her fashion/sculpture Race for the Cure Bag Lady. The award winning artwork was selected by Cameron Kitchin, Director of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. “Hutchison’s Fine Arts department is so grateful to Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards and the Brooks Museum of Art for honoring the hard work of our young artists and our outstanding art teachers. We value this opportunity to share our girls’ work and their creative voices with the greater Memphis community,” said Tracey Zerwig Ford, Hutchison Fine Arts Director.
