Our Motto

“In Union, Strength,” is a powerful reflection of Huston-Tillotson University’s commitment to excellence and transformation. Trustees of Samuel Huston College and Tillotson College met jointly on January 26, 1952, and agreed to detailed plans for merging the two institutions on the site (then known as “Bluebonnet Hill”) of Tillotson College. The merger was consummated, and the new Charter of Incorporation for Huston-Tillotson College was signed on October 24, 1952. The merged institutions adopted “In union, strength” as their motto.

Huston-Tillotson University celebrates our legacy while forging a path forward, reaffirming our status as a beacon of higher education, innovation, and inclusivity in the 21st century. This message serves as the cornerstone of the University’s brand, and is a testament to the enduring mission to empower the next generation of trailblazers, thinkers, and achievers.

Graphic Interpretation

We utilize some traditional elements such as the serif font, EB Garamond. However, the focus for the new graphic look for Huston-Tillotson University is in the modern ‒ representing Huston-Tillotson University’s professional, strong, youthful personality. To convey this modern personality we use the sans serif font family, Oswald; as well as simple, bold graphics. We refrain from using too many different fonts, colors and elements ‒refrain from frills ‒ because simplicity envokes strength.

About Huston-Tillotson University

Huston-Tillotson University, the first institution of higher education in Austin, Texas, has roots dating back to 1875. Huston-Tillotson University is an independent, church-related, historically Black, four-year liberal arts institution located on a 23-acre tree-lined campus near downtown in East Austin. Huston-Tillotson University’s mission is to nurture a legacy of leadership and excellence in education, connecting knowledge, power, passion, and values. The University offers associate and master’s degrees in addition to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in more than 19 areas of study. Huston-Tillotson University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

Fonts

The preferred typefaces for Huston-Tillotson University are the Oswald and EB Garamond families.

Oswald Book is used for headlines and subheads.

EB Garamond Regular and Times New Roman is used for body copy. For emphasis and callouts, Bold and Italics can be used.

Color Palette

Our official visual identity colors are maroon and gold. In addition to those primary colors, we use black, white and gray.

The secondary colors are lighter shades of maroon, gold, and gray, as well as dark navy blue.

Huston-Tillotson University Logo

The Huston-Tillotson logo comes in only one primary version including the logo-mark of our iconic bell tower, the full name, the founding date, and location.

Do not attempt to recreate, photocopy, scan, manipulate or change the mark in any way. Obtain approval from the marketing office before any piece is printed and put into circulation.

Logo Placement

An approved configuration of the Huston-Tillotson University logo and seal should appear prominently on all College-affiliated communications in a size appropriate to the overall piece. Mark placement includes prominent positions such as the front or back cover or title page of publications, the top and/or bottom of advertisements and websites, and the opening and closing of videos and films.

The “U” in this logo represents the spacing allotment necessary to achieve the proper CLEAR SPACE.

The “Star” in this logo represents the spacing allotment necessary to achieve the proper CLEAR SPACE.

The area outside the CLEAR SPACE is the SAFE ZONE, where other elements can be positioned safely.

Unacceptable Logo Usage

Our logo should not be altered in any way. Here are some unacceptable uses of the Huston-Tillotson University logos.

DO NOT enclose the logo or seal in a holding shape.

DO NOT rotate the logo or seal.

DO NOT make the logo or seal too small.

DO NOT use only the mark.

The Office of the President stationery will be different from all other offices of the University. Using the seal and a traditional, centered design style the look is sophisticated and elegant.
