The Untold Story: Abayomi Alvin, Actor Extraordinaire.
Hush Magazine: Abayomi, congratulations on being selected as the next cover for Hush magazine! We're thrilled to have you. Tell us about your journey and the milestones that have shaped your success.
Abayomi Alvin: What inspired me to pursue a was about 18, 19, 20 years, I never really kne as usual, be an engineer, I want to be a scien field.
Abayomi Alvin: What inspired me to pursue a career path in Nollywood? Hum.. until I was about 18, 19, 20 years, I never really knew what I wanted to do. So I was basically as usual, be an engineer, I want to be a scientist, I want to work in a science-related field.
I want to do this, I want to do that up until 19/20 years, even when I got into school. I meant the Uni, then I studied microbiology, which I later crossed to sociology and anthropology.
I knew that I wasn't going to work as a microbiologist. I knew that because it wasn't in me. Even then, when I entered microbiology, the plan was to cross to medicine.
But I also knew that I wasn't going to be a medical doctor. So I started trying to search, I started searching deep within me to know what I love doing. Then that was when I started listening to you know, talks, those motivational talks where I learned to do watch you have passion for.
Practically, I started looking for what I do love. Okay, if they ask me to do this for free till tomorrow, I'll be happy to do it. And that was when my acting, my journey into acting started, my journey into acting as a career. That was when it started because I've always loved it as a hobby.

I mean, way back since primary school, you know, the usual acting on stage for kids, church dramas, and all that. But now we're talking about the career path. So I'll say, yeah, it started from there; school.
Okay, so before it even got to the acting part, I think 2012 was my year of pageant. I did a couple of pageants, Mr. Idilush and Mr. Iduna in July. I won the state version. I won the national version as well as Mr. Iduna in 2012.
Then my modeling journey started. Did a couple of fashion runways, then music meets runway, fashion TV, runway Nigeria. A couple of commercials as well, a couple of editorials.
Did commercials or MTN way back then! Then I realized how models are being treated. The way models in Nigeria are being treated in Nigeria is not good, I wasn't feeling it then.
Hush Magazine: At What Point Did The Breakthrough Happened?
Abayomi Alvin: So I started thinking again, okay, what can I do? What is in there within me that I can do, that can make me earn way much more? And also have respect, Do you get what I'm saying? So that's how it justclicked!Dude!Youcanact!
It was 2013 then, I think they gave me all a script. I forgot everything. They gave me a second chance because they felt like, dude, we can hire you. We can have you for one of theseroles.
You look like one of the actors that should be on Tinsel, but you're not delivering. Then they gave me a second chance. I tried to rough my way through, to scale my way through. It was rough! We sha use rough and agidi! we used everything. Then I got to the second round of the auditions. Then I performed badly. Even though I knew I wasn't going to get a callback,Ididn’tgetacallbackanyways.(Gigling).
After realizing that professional acting was different, I went for a crash course into acting, then I also try to speak more infrontofpeopletohornmyskillsmoreandactmoreinfront ofpeople.
From there I started going for auditions upon auditions, Lots of auditions! Then my first gig finally came, although I can’t reallyrememberthenameofthemovie, funnyenough,Itwas alsofromanauditionIwentforinSurulere.Theproducersof the movie were shooting nearby and they needed extra actors, the actors they booked for didn’t come through, so they branched our audition venue and asked the organizers that they need two looking actors to come on set. And then the producers picked me and ‘Uche Maduagbu’, then he usedtobeanactor,Idon’tknowifhe’sstillacting.
Okay, fine. Let's go for one audition. Then I think I tried out for the Tinsel audition in 2013. Then that was when I realized that acting for yourself and for your friends in front of the church is totally different from acting professionally, especially auditioning in front of judges. I've never auditioned for anything before in my life. So the first time I went in for an audition, I legit forgot all my lines.Everything!Iforgotallthelines.
Guess what! I still got to the set and fumbled (Laughter), I wasn’t paid anyways. Oh God! I was sweating, I had just five lines, God knows how many take they took, maybe more than ten takes. So basically that happened, then a couple of other gigs, and then Jennifer's Diary happened to me then Isoken! Jenifer’s diary is an important milestone for me because I was still in school, at Obafemi Awolowo University. Then Aunty Funke liked me, then she booked us down for a role. The storyline had to move away from the schoolpremisestothesalon.

Another part of my life was when I wrote one of the scripts that a friend of mine produced for a cinema. Yes! I also write I’m a screenwriter, and that was like two years after Jenifer’s diary. After my character left Jenifer’s diary, we were shooting in Amen estate, and guess what! Funke Akindele came and I was reintroduced to her as someone who writes scripts. Then she got more interested and asked me to contact her, this was December 2016. She said she needs more writers in Jenifer’s diary, and that’s how I came back In Jenifer’sDiaryinJanuary2017.
Another milestone was when I got my first solid role with African Magic Mnet; “Jemeji”, I played one of the protagonists, Sewedo. Another milestone was when I acted in MTV Shuga, I don’t know about it now, but then,ItwasthedreamofanyyoungactorinNigeria.
HushMagazine:Hushmagazinefocusesonlifestyleand fashion. How do you infuse your personal style into your work and everyday life? Any style icons or fashion trendsthatinspireyou?
Hush Magazine: We're curious about the behind-thescenes aspects of your work. Can you take us through a typical day in your life as Abayomi Alvin? What are some of the challenges and rewards you encounter in your line of work?
Abayomi Alvin: Abayomi Alvin is a Multi-faceted human being, there’s Abayami Alvin the actor, Abayami Alvin the content creator, Abayami Alvin the content director, Abayami Alvin the screenwriter, Abayomi Alvin the fashion Line, Abayomi Alvin that doesn't do anything; the guy that just wants to rest, watch movies and doesn’t want to pick calls.
Okay, let’s pick Abayomi Alvin the actor, a typical day for me, most times I get a call up for 8-9 am. And of course, we all know how Lagos is, I have to wake up by 5:30 am. If I have the energy, I’ll do my exercise in the house. If the call time is late, I go to the gym. I face the traffic and go to set.
Abayomi Alvin: For me, I just like to look good, I won’t say I have any particular fashion or style.
Anything that looks good on me, I’m wearing it! I don’t care what continent it’s from, I’m wearing it. My watchword is comfortable, whatever I’m wearing, I have to be comfortable. I mean I’m all for checking all those high fashion-glamorous stuff, I admire them But, If it’s not comfortable for me, “I no dey wear”. I love my comfort a lot, I can’t trade anything for my comfy.
So, if I’m to name my style, I’d say “Comfy”, comfortable and look good.
For fashion trends, everything inspires me.
What people don’t know about set and movie making is that you’re waiting for 90% out of the 100% of the time to make a movie. That’s the most annoying part of my job, I call it the wait time. So yeah, I finally get on set, get your lines, and go back to your house. And that’s basically me, I am much of a reserved person, my work is my fun.
How won’t my work be fun when I am playing different characters every day? Right now, I’m being paid to be playful.
As an actor, there are a lot of challenges. That one alone is enough to talk about for days, years, and weeks. One of the challenges will just be a few. I have spoken about one of them earlier, which is the wait. Also, the pay, can’t be over-emphasized. I feel like when it comes to actors' payment, wages, and fees, we can talk about this for weeks, as we will have to look at different angles to the story.

Hush Magazine: Hush magazine is known for highlighting stories of passion and inspiration. Could you share with us a particular project or achievement that you are most proud of? What was the driving force behind your success in that endeavor?
Abayomi Alvin: I am always proud of any project I’m on. I will just say my content creation journey is a journey that I’m really proud of because I started content creation way back, but I took it as a hubby.
When I started content creation as a money-making venture, I was already a known actor. If you’re already popular and you want to start something new, people will just want to attack you, they won’t want to give you space.
You are not funny, you’re not this and that. I took all the criticism. Today you can see, my page is getting a lot of engagement and I’m looking at going bigger with my content. The Abayomi Alvin brand will go to all platforms.
Abayomi Alvin is an entertainer that sings, acts, and dances, I entertain for a living. Just hold on, chillax, and eat popcorn, Abayomi Alvin is coming.
My driving force is that I have to make it in life, and my family is also a motivation and driving force to me. The only option I have is to succeed. Make it or Make it.
Hush Magazine: Tell us how your collaboration with Dollarz sharted.
Abayomi Alvin: Oluwardolarz! My collaboration with him started like a joke, I never even knew it was going to happen. I know I used to see his skits then; Mom, Tope, Ayomide, Him, and his circle of friends. I have always seen him like this dude is going to be a proud guy.
You know the usual way we judge people before we even meet them. One day we met on a movie set in Ibadan. It started from our first scene together, when we started relating. We, actors, are chilled and all, but this is someone that just came with different vibes and sees content in everything you do. We are probably just talking and then he says what if we do this and this… “Omo content don land”. Viral content, and for me that’s how I like to think but I’ve never had any friend like that in my circle. This is why I’ve not taken content creation very seriously.
But Dollarz is very different, any small thing ‘nah content’. The ending he was giving to every content is amazing, the twist was superb. And then we started talking, I think we created something short on set. I finished my set earlier than him, so I left for Lagos, wrote the script down, and got ready to shoot something. I hollaed him to come jump on the content I created, and he said no problem.
Guess what?
On the day of the shoot, I called this guy and he didn’t pick up my calls, his phone was on ‘do not disturb’. I was looking for a plan b, and he called to ask for the location, he said he was sleeping. At that point, I wasn’t expecting him, and then 10-15 minutes, my guy pulled up.
Then I knew this guy is actually a real gee. Guess what? He didn’t charge me a dime. And from there basically, the result is online. Wherever I go I hear stuff like “Dollarz nko”. Dollarz's mum also took me in as a son, if anything is happening in the family, I’m sure I’d be the first five people they’ll call about Dollarz. It’s also how the family has taken me in as a part of the family, it’s nice and I appreciate God for the set that brought us together. I really can’t wait for y’all to see a lot of magic we are about to create.
