Convergence

THE HURRICANE ISLAND CENTER FOR SCIENCE AND LEADERSHIP’S CORE BELIEF IS IN THE POWER OF BRINGING MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES TO AN ISSUE OR PROBLEM.

In 2024, we launched Convergence, which focused on how the intersection of science and art shape perception. Connecting students, scientists, and teachers with each other and with opportunities for meaningful research and learning on Hurricane Island is at the heart of what we do.

Given the complexity of the world in which we live, it is more important than ever to understand how to examine data, process information, and make informed decisions. This is what we teach at Hurricane Island.

For the third year in a row, Hurricane Island was honored to be a recipient of funding from Governor Janet Mills’ Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative. With a gift of $267,000, Hurricane Island provided many students from across the state of Maine with their first experience on a boat and on an island.

This past year we expanded our Educational Cohort Model, bringing students and teachers from Aroostook County, Midcoast Maine, Portland and Boston together for hands-on marine science learning. New partnerships were forged and existing collaborations strengthened in support of hands-on STEM initiatives in local schools and communities.

Convergence is also central to our scientific pursuits. Hurricane Island’s geographic location at the intersection of the eastern and western Maine coastal currents makes it an ideal site for marine research, and the abundance of life in the intertidal zone and surrounding waters provides a rich environment for student learning.

In 2024 we launched our Pen Bay Marine Data Project. Our two oceanographic buoys, Wynken off Hurricane Island and Blynken off Isleboro, will provide real time information about our coast and ocean — data that will fill a gap in information being collected by the Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems to serve the needs of fishermen, mariners and coastal businesses and communities in New England.

As we find ways to engage our students in scientific inquiry we are integrating more opportunities to use art as a hands-on strategy for looking more closely at the natural world.

We are extraordinarily proud of the many and varied ways our work has had a meaningful impact on the lives of the people we serve. Thank you for being partners with us in this work. We hope you enjoy reading the details of this past year in our Annual Report.

A MORE SCIENTIFICALLY LITERATE SOCIETY

Hurricane Island’s Education Programs continued to expand in 2024, with support from the Maine Department of Education and our partners and neighbors in Penobscot Bay. We provided many Maine students with their first experiences on a boat and on an island, making an impact with outdoor learning that will stay with students for years to come.

Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative

For the third year in a row, Hurricane Island was delighted to receive funding from the Maine Department of Education’s Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative that helped us reach hundreds of new students with our hands-on science learning programs. In 2024 we developed new partnerships with the Lisbon School, Casco Bay High School, and the Presque Isle High School, providing meaningful hands-on learning to students who had never before experienced the wonders of Maine’s islands and coastline.

Teaching Climate Resilience

This year, Hurricane Island received funding from the Maine DOE to deliver climate-focused teacher professional development in partnership with the North Haven School and the Vinalhaven School. Teachers worked with climate action groups to design and implement learning projects for their students and communities, addressing local challenges to build community resilience.

Cultivating strategic partnerships with local schools and regional educational organizations such as Shelburne Farms positions Hurricane Island as a leader in the field. Our partnerships and professional development programs are expanding the network of educators dedicated to teaching climate resiliency in schools throughout New England.

Integrating Education and Research

In 2024 our educators worked with students from across the midcoast region and neighboring island schools to collect the scallop “spat” we use to seed our scallop farm. Our Assistant Education Director, Kyle Amergian, and Aquaculture Farm Manager, Madison Maier, also helped teachers on Isleboro set up their own scallop farm for education purposes. We are thrilled to receive consistent press coverage for our unique approach to integrating education with scientific data collection.

In the Island Journal: Students contribute to ‘archipelago of knowledge’

In the Portland Press Herald: Maine researchers, students are sorting through muck and slugs to study baby scallops

On News Channel WABI 5: Students take deep dive into Maine scallop education

In the Midcoast Villager: Islesboro’s Offshore Educator

Percent of Open Enrollmant Students on Scholarship: Average

Percent of Participants returning as Alums:

We put these bags out at the end of September and they sat out there. This set of bags was just brought in and now the kids are out there, they’re getting wet, they’re picking all the baby scallops off of the mesh and then we set them out and quantify them. And it really is like gold panning.”

RESPONDING TO COMMUNITYDRIVEN SCIENCE AND RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Sustainable Aquaculture Workshops

This year saw the continuation of our Aquaculture Skillbuilding Workshops. These free workshops provided over 50 members of the Penobscot Bay community with opportunities to deepen their knowledge and hands-on experience with sustainable scallop aquaculture.

From the Sea Up

This past summer, our aquaculture work was featured in the Island Institute’s “From the Sea Up” podcast in a story about Hurricane Island’s innovative workforce training and education for Maine’s Blue Economy. The episode explores how work with students, researchers, fishermen, and ocean harvesters can benefit Penobscot Bay’s ecology and economy.

The Penobscot Bay Marine Data Project

2024 saw major progress on the Pen Bay Marine Data Project, an initiative to deploy oceanographic buoys in Penobscot Bay and provide long term marine data sets to the fishing and scientific communities. We developed a data-driven site selection process with community input and support from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) to determine locations for the buoys and to permit them as private aids to navigation. Additionally, we’ve collaborated with the Northeast Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems to develop a plan for real time data to be made accessible via their Mariner’s Dashboard Data Portal.

Biodegradable Gear for Anti-biofouling in Shellfish Farming

In our first year of funding from The Nature Conservancy’s SOAR Program (Supporting Oyster Aquaculture and Restoration) we piloted a sustainable anti-biofouling solution for shellfish farmers which used biodegradable nets to keep lantern nets clean. This innovative design may offer solutions for reducing labor and plastics in keeping nets clean.

WEATHERING THE STORMS, BUILDING FOR CLIMATE SOLUTIONS

In early 2024, storm surges lead to historic water levels along the Maine coastline, with record-breaking tides destroying homes, roads, wharves, gear, and other infrastructure along the working waterfront. While many waterfront structures were severely damaged by the storms, the Hurricane Island Field Research Station, designed to meet FEMA regulations for water level rise, withstood the storm without any damage. This climate mitigation strategy is built into the facility’s design and models building practices shifting to meet the evolving challenges of climate-related weather events. This story was covered on Newscenter Maine and in the Pen Bay Pilot.

While many waterfront structures were severely damaged by the 2024 storms, the Hurricane Island Field Research Station, designed for climate resiliency, remained unscathed.

MODELING ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE INFRASTRUCTURE

We are implementing and modeling innovative technologies through the Hurricane Island Field Research Station and campus-wide infrastructure.

Preserving and protecting our place on Hurricane Island through continued investment.

WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE ENDURING GENEROSITY OF OUR 2024 DONORS.

A special thanks to our Spring Tide Supporters, whose names are noted in blue on the following pages. On October 5th, 2024, Peter’s closest friends, former colleagues, mentees and protégés, joined members of the Willauer family and Hurricane Island staff at the Megunticook Country Club in Rockport, Maine. Over 120 people gathered to celebrate the joyous man who has harnessed the magic of Hurricane Island for over 60 years. Hosted by Biz Van Gelder, the event featured a video tribute produced by Dana Rae Warren and toasts and roasts by Peter’s sons Charlie and Langley Willauer, his longtime friend Ross Sherbrooke, former Outward Bound Instructor Biz Van Gelder, HIOBS Executive Director Eric Denny, and Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership Executive Director Bo Hoppin. Hurricane Island lore, stories and songs filled the day.

CONVERGENCE: ART MEETS SCIENCE

I’ve spent a lot of time looking at the world and getting curious... this initiative really is that connection––between perception, art, and science.”
– Eric Hopkins, Artist

CONVERGENCE kicked off on June 22 with an event on Hurricane Island that featured remarks from Carl Little and Eric Hopkins and a panel with artist Krisanne Baker and scientist Bob Steneck that was moderated by Dr. Anya Hopple.

The CONVERGENCE: Art Meets

Science initiative was covered by Penbay Pilot and also by Newscenter Maine’s TV Channel 6 which featured interviews with artists Karen Talbot, Eric Hopkins, Krisanne Baker and Brenda Free.

CONVERGENCE: Art Meets Science is Hurricane Island’s new initiative to explore how art and science shape perception. Through conversations, workshops and events, Hurricane Island engaged artists and scientists in dialogue about how each of these practices ask us to pay attention to the world around us. During 2024 over 40 artists visited Hurricane Island and made original pieces inspired by the island and our mission. These artworks were displayed in locations across the midcoast and sold in a benefit auction at Pascal Hall.

EVENTS

UNITED PEOPLE GLOBAL

Celebrating our seventh consecutive year in partnership with United People Global (UPG), we hosted three cohorts of international young sustainability leaders in 2024. Hurricane Island’s unique setting and leadership training curricula have inspired over 500 sustainability leaders since the inception of the UPG program in 2019. Sustainability projects set in motion through this partnership are now active on every continent on the globe! We recognized the success of the 2024 August cohort with a public wharf side award ceremony at Barren’s Distillery + Restaurant in Camden, ME featuring project pitches by each UPG leader and remarks by UPG President, Yemi Babington-Ashaye and Hurricane Island Executive Director, Bo Hoppin.

SUSTAINABLE ISLAND DINNER

We hosted our annual Farm to Table Dinner event on a stormy day in August that cleared just in time to grace us with a beautiful evening of delicious food and good conversation. The Farm to Table is an event in which our whole island community comes together to make a locally-sourced meal and welcome visitors to experience the magic of the island.

CLIMATE RESILIENCE AND EDUCATION: A CONVERSATION AT WATERMAN’S

The January storms caused major damage to waterfront communities around Penobscot Bay, including on North Haven, where a number of waterfront businesses and properties had to be completely rebuilt. This was a wake up call for the island community about the impacts of climate-related weather events. To amplify a conversation that was already in motion in the North Haven Community, Hurricane Island hosted a panel about climate data and education–featuring local students, teachers, and community members alongside professional climate scientists. The event filled Waterman’s Community Center and was attended by Congresswoman Pingree and Governor Mills.
