based learning, volunteer activities, internships, research, and travel study.

We are an intentionally small university because we know the best way to learn is through one-on-one mentorship provided by professors who take the time to understand how they can support your life’s ambitions. Our community is close-knit, safe, and supportive. You don’t have to wait in line to meet with your profs or see your staff advisors. What’s more, this creates the perfect environment to make lifelong connections. Plus … Huron is the only Liberal Arts university in Canada that also offers students full privileges at a large research university. Huron is located in the heart of Western University's campus, so you’ll have access to all its amenities.

EDUCATION FOR THE FUTURE A Liberal Arts education is worth more today than ever before. New research reveals too many workers are trained for jobs that will disappear, rather than equipped with skills that adapt to our ever-changing social, political, and economic landscape. (Humans Wanted, Royal Bank of Canada, March 2018.) The workplace is evolving so rapidly no one can predict what it will look like in 20 years. At Huron, you’ll develop expertise in critical thinking, complex problem solving, cultural awareness, and adaptability – all of which will prepare you to thrive no matter what the future brings.

e believe society is crying out at this exact point in history for students who are called to lead – but to lead with a heart and a conscience. Our students’ academic passions are matched only by their drive to be community-minded, socially active people who create positive change in the world. We applaud their fervour, and we support their aspirations with a transformative learning experience that propels them to ever-greater heights of success.

Dr. Barry Craig, Principal of Huron University College (He's the one in the back – you'll get to know him. How many universities can say that?)

Work one-on-one with a faculty member to develop and conduct your own research project. Communicate your work at scholarly conferences and take advantage of opportunities to get published.

DIVERSITY OF STUDY “It’s important to develop the broadest and deepest understanding of many diverse areas of study. For example, I took courses in physics and chemistry not knowing how useful they would be to me later in my legal career when I became involved in the world of performance-enhancing drugs.” HISTORY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE “Knowing the history of the political forces that shape Canada are a must for a lawyer. Understanding the Canadian Parliamentary and legislative processes and how they have evolved to make the laws of the country is also vital. History and Political Science courses are very useful preparation.” WRITING AND PUBLIC SPEAKING “The skill of public speaking is foundational to law. You always must be able to explain yourself to a judge, another lawyer, a client, and sometimes a world audience. Learning how to write and speak persuasively is invaluable preparation for the study of law.”

Her team delivered strategies on how to improve the company’s recruitment and retention of employees, as well as insights on expansion into a new city. She learned about dealing with multiple variables and overcoming obstacles, professional conduct, teamwork, goal-setting, and work/life balance. “It really hits you. WAYS TO VOLUNTEER

The Huron University College Student Council (HUCSC) operates over 30 student-run clubs, almost all of which have a volunteer component.

Huron’s Volunteer Ya! club organizes events like Donate to Skate for autism research, RelayForLife for cancer, clothing drives, and making Valentine’s Day cards for seniors. Huron’s Centre for Global Studies maintains a list of community partners that offer volunteer opportunities.

In 2016, she travelled to West Africa to pilot an environmental education program in local schools with the Nova Scotia Gambia Association. She’s continued volunteering with Starfish International − a non-profit dedicated to improving education for girls in The Gambia − on a pilot dance program for children with special needs. “One little boy with Down syndrome was having a difficult time learning the alphabet but loved tossing a soccer ball. We incorporated the tune of the ABC song into the rhythm of the ball play, and he learned how to sing the alphabet. His father was in tears when he saw what his son had achieved.” Ailin believes volunteering is an essential part of her education because in serving others, she also learns what is truly important to her.

After a couple of summer internships at Shopify, Trevor decided to go “all in” with a year-long internship at Clearbit, a data start-up in San Francisco, CA. His goal was to hone what he’d learned at Huron in an immersive work environment.

Trevor was welcomed by the Clearbit team and given significant responsibilities in growth marketing. “They gave me interesting projects to work on and the freedom to tackle my own interests.” New friends warmly welcomed him with trips to tourist attractions, skiing, and a birthday pub crawl. He also volunteered with the company’s fundraising project to provide relief for the homeless population. Huron staff helped Trevor coordinate his leave, provided resources on workplace life, helped connect him with Huron/Western alumni living in the city, and checked in on his progress.
