In 1972, a group of local pediatricians established the nation’s first after-hours Pediatric Center, offering non-emergency care during evenings and weekends. The following year, in 1973, Hurley opened the region’s first and only Burn Unit. This was soon followed by the introduction of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and, in 1974, the opening of a dedicated Pediatric Unit. Also in 1974, as part of the ongoing development program, Hurley extensively remodeled and expanded its emergency facilities.

Hurley Hospital Being Honored by Gift of Life

April was Donate Life Month! You can help save a life by choosing to be an organ donor.

This month’s DAISY Award Honoree is Brianna Haskins, RN BSN. The DAISY Award celebrates the extraordinary compassion a nurse shows to their patients and families.

From the nomination:

"I'm writing this letter to express my deep appreciation for the care and support I received from Brianna. From the very beginning, she took the time to truly get to know me and understand what I was going through. When

you're in as much pain as I was, it means the world to have someone outside your family offering not only medical care but also genuine encouragement and empathy. Brianna was more than just a nurse. She was a source of comfort. She never made me feel like just another patient. Her compassion, attentiveness and sincere concern made all the difference. She consistently encouraged me, helping me believe in myself and in my ability to overcome the challenges I faced. In just a few days, she made a lasting impact on me and helped me feel seen, valued and supported.

Although I have a wonderful support system in my family and friends, nights were especially hard. Those were the moments when I felt most alone. But Brianna made it feel like someone was still by my side. When you go through something as traumatic as I did, that kind of presence brings healing in a way that words cannot describe. I truly believe that without Brianna's support, I wouldn't be as far along in my recovery as I am today. Her encouragement still echoes in my mind and continues to motivate me, even now with other nurses caring for me. Many of the other nurses were also great, but Brianna went above and beyond. She absolutely deserves to be recognized for that."

Brianna is a dedicated nurse on 9 East Oncology. She graduated from the University of Michigan–Flint and completed her clinical rotations at Hurley. During her training, she gained experience in several departments

Brianna Haskins, RN, BSN

including 7 East, Pediatrics, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the Emergency Department. Eventually, she found her place and passion on 9 East Oncology.

9 East is a versatile unit that cares for a wide range of patients, with a primary focus on those undergoing treatment for cancer. "There's a strong sense of teamwork on 9 East. We all share responsibilities and maintain positive, supportive communication," Brianna shared. "Of course, it can be challenging at times, especially when we’re caring for complex oncology cases and providing comfort care. But we support each other through every situation."

"Being nominated for the DAISY Award was truly an honor," Brianna said. "Knowing that the care I provide makes a difference and is recognized means so much to me. I'm not someone who seeks recognition, but I’m genuinely honored. This is such a prestigious award and I’m incredibly grateful to have received it. Even on the hardest days, positive

feedback reminds me why I do this work. It truly makes it all worthwhile. Recognition from patients and colleagues means more than I can express."

Brianna also expressed deep gratitude to her team: "Thank you to my amazing night shift crew for always lifting each other up and getting through tough shifts together. We have an incredible team on 9 East."

She also shared heartfelt thanks for her family: "I want to extend a special appreciation to my parents. They’ve always supported me through every hardship, listened when I needed to talk and lifted me up when I needed it most. I couldn't have done this without them."

In her free time, Brianna enjoys spending time with family, friends and her dogs. She likes to stay active and often visits her family’s lake house to relax and unwind. She has two Bullmastiffs and a Ridgeback-Lab-Beagle mix who keep life fun and full of energy.

Nominate an exceptional RN for the DAISY Award. Nomination forms are available in the Cafeteria, 8W Nursing Office and on the Hurley intranet.

On Thursday, April 17, Hurley hosted an in-person educational seminar titled The Future of Spine Health & Motion Preservation Surgery, presented by Hurley spine specialist Dr. Marc Moisi. Food Farmacy Expands Access to Nutrition for the Community

Amanda Escalera-Torres, Coordinator and Nutrition Specialist at Hurley’s Food FARMacy, is making a big impact by expanding access to healthy food for patients managing chronic conditions.

With a grant from the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, she launched a food delivery program using DoorDash to reach patients facing transportation barriers. She also provides follow-up video visits offering nutrition guidance and support.

Amanda partners with local growers to ensure the Food FARMacy offers fresh low-sodium noadded-sugar options and continues to serve over 7,000 patients annually. The program provides monthly groceries for up to six months to individuals referred by their primary care physician for conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, helping patients build lasting healthier lifestyles.

Hurley Physical Therapy Flint Now Open Inside New YMCA Facility

Take a look inside the new Hurley Physical Therapy Flint, now open within the recently constructed YMCA of Greater Flint at the LiveWell on Harrison facility. Located at 719 Harrison St. in downtown Flint, the center celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on Monday, April 28.

This modern 50,000-square-foot ADA-accessible facility is more than just a fitness center. It also houses the Hurley Physical Therapy Clinic, the Crim Fitness Foundation and 50 residential apartments. YMCA amenities include a full child watch area, indoor walking track, basketball court, three fitness studios and a wide array of workout equipment.

Hurley’s expert team of physical therapy professionals offers Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy services tailored to each patient’s unique needs. Whether you're recovering from surgery, managing a chronic condition or healing from an injury on the field or off, the goal is to help you regain strength, restore function and get back to doing what you love.

Music Therapy Brings Comfort and Healing to Hurley’s NICU Babies

Babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Hurley are benefiting from the soothing power of music, thanks to a unique partnership with the Flint Institute of Music’s School of Performing Arts. Through this collaboration, professional music therapists provide live music sessions tailored specifically for premature and critically ill infants.

This gentle, research-based therapy has shown remarkable effects, helping to stabilize vital signs, promote relaxation and support developmental engagement. For these vulnerable newborns, live music can lower heart and respiratory rates, improve feeding and create a calming environment that supports bonding with their families. This program underscores Hurley’s commitment to using innovative therapies to support every aspect of a baby’s healing journey.

"True leadership is not measured by titles but by the impact we have on others. Our Volunteer, Annette Saseen, leads with kindness, compassion and a relentless dedication to making the world a better place, one act of service at a time."

COMMUNICATIONS: THE VOICE OF HURLEY

Introduction

The communications operators led by Latasha Thomas are the first voice you hear when you call Hurley. They serve as the initial point of contact for both internal and external customers and play a critical role in keeping the hospital running smoothly. From paging doctors and handling emergency codes to facilitating call-offs and connecting families with loved ones, this team ensures that everything flows efficiently and effectively.

Handling Critical Codes

In a hospital, time is of the essence and communications operators are often the first to respond to emergency situations. When a code is called, they act swiftly and efficiently. For example, when a “code stroke” is called on a particular floor, they immediately confirm the location and relay the message overhead. This ensures the appropriate medical team is notified and can respond without delay.

A Team of Dedication

The team includes 12 dedicated communications operators, all led by Latasha, whose leadership is built on years of experience. The communications operators are the heart and soul of Hurley’s communication network. Whether answering a routine call or responding to a life-saving emergency, they understand the importance of their role. The team works together to keep Hurley running smoothly, efficiently and with compassion.

“The operators are the voice of Hurley and we understand the responsibility that comes with this role. Every call is an opportunity to build relationships, offer assistance and create a sense of calm, even in moments of distress. The approach is simple: always talk with a smile. No matter what we may be going through personally, we strive to remain positive on the phone because we never know what the person on the other end is experiencing. Whether it’s a nurse we’ve never met or a family member concerned about a patient, we make it a point to treat everyone like family because at Hurley we’re all in this together.”
