MAINTAINING ACCURATE AND UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION

The Department of Human Resources (HR) would like to remind employees of their obligation to timely report changes or corrections of employee information, to include name, address, phone number, personal (non-Hurley) e-mail address and emergency contact.  This ensures compliance is maintained and that employees receive important communications from the medical center.

The process is automated and easy!

Log into OASIS and click on My Profile.

NAME CHANGE

Before HR can update an employee’s name in the HR, Payroll and other systems, an employee must provide documentation, such as a marriage certificate or divorce decree, as well as a copy of an updated Social Security card showing their new name. Employees who hold a credential (license, registration or certification) are responsible for changing their name with the governing body for that credential. HR validates the change through the primary source verification process.

Click “Change Name” found on the toolbar on the profile page and complete the form.  You are able to attach a PDF of supporting documentation. Click OK and the request routes electronically to HR for review and approval. Don’t have an electronic copy to attach? Bring your document to the HR Service Center or drop a copy in the Employee Drop Box located in HR on the 6th Floor of the School of Nursing Building.

ADDRESS CHANGE

If you move or want to change where you receive mail, submit an address change. Your place of residence is required for tax purposes. Your mailing address can be the same or different than your residential address.

Click on the Personal Information tab. Under the Addresses section, click “Change Address” and complete the form. The request routes to HR for verification and approval.

CONTACT INFORMATION

This is where you change where and how you want to be contacted outside of your work email.

Click the Personal Information Tab. Under the Contact Information section, click “Add Phone” or “Add Email” and complete the form.

HURLEY ALERTS

Employees may elect to receive Hurley Alerts from the HMC Emergency Alert System. On the main profile page, click on the check box to Opt-In or Opt-Out.

Thank you for keeping your employee information up to date.  For questions or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact: HR Service Center at 810.262.9140 or email to hrservicecenter@hurleymc.com

employee of the month

Steven Garty, Hurley’s Employee of the Month for October 2022, has worked as an Environmental Technician in Environmental Services for twenty-eight years. He was born and raised in Flint and went to Southwestern Academy. He originally decided to work at Hurley partly because his mother worked here in Sterile Services. They are not the only family members to work at Hurley either, because his sister works in the ER and even won Employee of the Month a few years ago.

Steven’s daily responsibilities as an Environmental Technician have changed a lot over the years, mainly because he has worked all over the hospital. He started working on 5E in 1995, before moving to the old ER for seven years. He has also worked on the project team, buffed the floors, and worked with biohazards and recyclable materials. In the twentyeight years he has worked at Hurley, he has done everything there is to do in his department. He now works as a team leader, primarily running the Xenex machine which disinfects rooms using UV light, and helping out wherever someone is needed. He says, “It’s been great spending all this time here and meeting all the people over the years, working with them. I even met my best friend here.”

Being named Employee of the Month was a big surprise, but a good one. As he says, “I thought it was pretty cool. I thought it was pretty nice to

be recognized. I look at it more as EVS getting recognized. We all do so much, and sometimes we get overlooked. Anyone in Environmental Services could have got recognized and it would have been deserved. I don’t look to get recognized for doing what I was hired to do.”

When Steven is not at work, his biggest hobbies are playing in the yard and spending a lot of time with his wife and kids. And now he gets to hang out with his first grandchild, who is just turning one and a half years old. He also has a son at college at Indiana Tech University, who he visits regularly.

Steven received a gift package that included a pizza party with his team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop, and a framed certificate. Congratulations, Steven!

Adolescent Behavioral Unit Ribbon Cutting

November 15, 2022

There had been no inpatient behavioral health services for kids in Genesee County since 2005. Now, Hurley’s new 14-bed Adolescent Behavioral Health Unit has changed that. Adolescents aged 12 to 17 years no longer need to leave the county, and their proximity to family, to receive treatment.

This 11,000 square foot unit features a multidisciplinary team that develops personalized care plans for adolescents who are at immediate risk to themselves or others. Patients include those with anxiety, depressions, and suicidal ideation. These hard-to-place adolescents may otherwise have had to remain on a medical floor where psychiatric services are not available.

This $4 million project was funded partly through a bond. The center features a noisy activity room designed for group games,

therapy sessions, and art and crafts, and a quiet activity room for patients who are sensitive to sensory overload. Named the Panda Cares Center of Hope, these rooms were created through a $550,000 donation from Panda Express. A $350,000 grant from The Roots & Wings Foundation helped purchase furniture and equipment.

primary care, urgent care,

During a recent Hurley Health Living Series live broadcast, Emergency & Trauma Services Administrator, John Stewart discussed how to determine where to go and what to expect.

PRIMARY CARE

If you are experiencing mild symptoms such as a temperature below 101 degrees, aches and pains, a mild cough, etc., that could be caused by the flu or COVID-19.

Many primary care physicians are now offering virtual visits and can assess patients by a phone or video call fairly quickly.

URGENT CARE

To receive more immediate or after hours care for injuries or illness that are not life-threatening but can’t wait for an appointment with your doctor, try an urgent care. Urgent cares typically have far shorter wait times than the ER, and costs much less than a traditional hospital emergency room visit.

Examples of when to visit Urgent Care:

Abdominal pain, upset stomach, or vomiting

Acid reflux and GERD

Allergies, bronchitis, sinus pain, and infections

Bladder infection, painful urination

Colds, sore throat, cough, or congestion

Constipation or persistent diarrhea

Dehydration

Ear infections and pain

Fevers without rash or rashes without fever

Mild flu-like symptoms

Minor burns

Minor cuts requiring stitches

Pink eye, eye redness, discharge, or itchiness

Pulled muscles, sprains, strains, or tendonitis

Sexually Transmitted Infections

Severe toothache or abscess

Some wheezing or shortness of breath

Workplace injuries

EMERGENCY ROOM

For certain medical emergencies such as a heart attack or stroke, calling 911 is always the right decision. This enables paramedics to begin lifesaving treatment in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Below are some guidelines to help you decide between Urgent Care and the ER.

Examples of when to visit the Emergency Room:

Asthma attack or severe shortness of breath

Broken bones protruding through skin and dislocated joints

Coughing or vomiting up blood

Facial lacerations or those requiring stitches

Fever with a rash

Head injury

Loss of consciousness

Paralysis

Poisoning

Serious burns, cuts, or bleeding

Severe allergic reactions – swelling lips, difficulty swallowing or breathing

Signs of stroke – weakness or numbness on one side, slurred speech

Sudden and severe headache

Suicidal or homicidal feelings

Vaginal bleeding or severe abdominal paid with pregnancy

Signs of heart attack - including chest pain

Since 2017, Hurley’s Food FARMacy has addressed food insecurity and improved patients’ health.

Physicians refer patients to the Food FARMacy to receive healthy food for their households. Referrals allow for a seven-day supply each month for a six month period.

Individuals of all ages served, some with chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.

Rite Aid Healthy Futures awarded a grant to support Hurley’s food access initiatives, including the Food FARMacy, located at 2065 S. Center Road in Burton.

“We are lucky to have Geraldine as a volunteer, and are ecstatic to add 'Foundation Board Member' to her Hurley résumé. She exemplifies service with a big smile.”

spotlight

Geraldine Redmond’s time as a Hurley volunteer is relatively new compared to some of her volunteer colleagues; however, Geraldine is not

new to Hurley. Her mother, Betha Sanders, retired from Hurley’s Dietary Department in 1985. Geraldine and her children were born at Hurley, and she volunteers 18 hours a week in our Admitting Department.

Her work as a volunteer at Hurley originally began after she signed up at school, starting as a candy striper where she went around to rooms and passed out water. Now in Admitting, she helps check in people and get them to their destinations, which she says is her favorite part. She decided to volunteer again after her more recently becoming a patient. “The Hurley burn unit is so fantastic, they saved my life. Their care is exceptional and after my experience there, I decided to get included in the hospital by giving back.”

A Flint native and community advocate, Geraldine has served this community most of her life. She graduated from Northwestern High School, served as Beecher School Board President and Cheer and Pom Pom Coach, and was employed for many years at Mt. Morris Township. She also worked for the City of Flint, Consumers Energy and she retired from the Genesee County Health Department.

She currently serves as the President and Resident Commissioner of the Flint Housing Commission Board which provides housing for low income people. Her other volunteerism includes being a board member of Healthier Black Elders and being a City of Flint elections chairperson, ensuring the elections process runs smoothly.

In her spare time Geraldine likes to dance, roller skate and bowl – anything interacting with people. She also loves spending time with her three children and three grandchildren, whether it be a family movie night, vacations, or just getting together.

While she said she was honored to be selected Volunteer of the Month, she also feels helping people is in her nature. “The people in the department I work in are so helpful, they’re all good in their own way.”

Surgical Documentation Tip o ’ the Month ~or~

How to Survive the Government Documentation Rules

Didyou mean “paralysis” or “paraplegia”?

The Federal Government has enough regulations to handcuff any coder and significantly impair his or her ability to code the level of care of our patients require.

H Here’s what you already know

The terms “paralysis” and “paraplegia” are often used interchangeably. Damage to the spinal cord may result in varying levels of paralysis; paralysis may be temporary and/or partial, while for others it is permanent and/or complete. As a result, there are several classifications of paralysis (monoplegia, hemiplegia, paraplegia and quadriplegia/ tetraplegia).

H Here’s what you may not know

In ICD-10 coding, the terms “paralysis” and “paraplegia” are distinct “Paralysis” as a general term is used to describe the loss of movement or sensation following damage to the nervous system. Therefore, without specific documentation of the term “paraplegia”, the coder is only permitted to code the diagnosis as “paralytic syndrome, unspecified”

Let’s look at a clinical scenario: A 52-year-old male, with long-standing paraplegia after a gunshot wound, presents for a VATS lobectomy for surgical management of a newly diagnosed lung cancer Here’s how this can be coded:

W Why the difference?

In the first scenario, you noted “long-standing paralysis secondary to GSW at L2” in the admission H&P and discharge summary. Comparatively, in the second scenario, you used the word “paraplegia” instead of “paralysis” The small, but significant, difference in the documentation afforded the patient a longer stay under your thorough management.

T The moral of the story? Be careful when documenting paraplegia and other types of paralysis (mono-, hemi-, quadriplegia)!

employee of the month

Kayla Pilon, Diagnostic Radiology Technologist, is Hurley’s Employee of the Month for November. She has been at Hurley since 2013, when she enrolled in Hurley’s School of Radiology and completed the two year program to earn an Associate’s Degree in Radiologic Sciences. She was hired directly following graduation in 2015, and has been here ever since.

Kayla says that she “Enjoys the variety. We’re not doing the same thing every day, so we’re not getting stagnant. It’s never just clock in, clock out. I really enjoy traumas and fluoroscopy procedures.”

Her work days vary, but due to the versatility of her position, she might be working in the emergency department, taking portable units to patients’ rooms, taking general x-rays down in the radiology department, or even working in surgery cases using a C-arm.

There are normally six to seven radiologic technologists on staff each day, and in a week they might each cover all of the areas their department services. She explains, “We have to make sure we get everything completed in a timely manner without compromising patient care. And I have great coworkers. We buddy up in the emergency department and with portables. We stay in contact throughout the day and work well as a team to cover all the areas and get the patients the care they need.”

When it was time to let her know she was being named Employee of the Month, Kayla got called to a meeting. She says, “I saw Melany and Amy out of the corner of my eye while my coworkers were showing up. And I had just been getting ready for an exam with a patient in the next room. So I was in shock. I didn't know it was happening until it was happening.

No hints. I was very surprised.” She wasn’t even aware that she had been nominated, or who had nominated her for the award. She explains, “Of course, I’m very thankful and appreciative of whoever nominated me - I still don’t know who nominated me.”

While at Hurley, Kayla is focused on providing patients with great experiences, but outside of work, she is a self-described introvert. She says, “I spend a lot of time with my family. We have a one year old and a three year old. Besides that, a great night is getting the kids in bed and putting on a good Christmas movie.”

Mushroom Steak Fajitas

MAKES: 4 Servings

PREPARATION TIME: 45 minutes Bring another serving of vegetables and important nutrients to your plate with this twist on classic fajitas. We've upped the vegetables ante by sautéing savory mushrooms and mixing them with steak for an umami-rich, flavorful punch. And we've sped up the preparation time for this Tex-Mex favorite, foregoing marinating the steak by using a tender cut. INGREDIENTS

• 12 ounces sirloin or other boneless steak (about 3/4-inch thick)

• 3 cups sliced cremini mushrooms

• 1 tablespoon no-salt fiesta lime seasoning (divided) • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 medium green bell pepper, sliced into strips • 1 medium red bell pepper, sliced into strips • 1 medium yellow bell pepper, sliced into strips • 8 whole-wheat tortillas (6-inch) • 1 medium tomato, diced • 2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce • 4 tablespoons non-fat sour cream DIRECTIONS 1. Slice beef across the grain into 1/4-inch strips. Place in a medium bowl with 1/2 tablespoon fiesta lime seasoning; toss to coat. 2. Place mushrooms, peppers, and onion and remaining fiesta lime seasoning in a large bowl; toss to coat. 3. Heat oil in large, non-stick skillet. Add beef strips; cook about 3-4 minutes. Remove from skillet. 4. Place coated vegetables in skillet and sauté until vegetables are slightly tender, about 5-8 minutes. 5. Add beef back to skillet and sauté mixture 1-2 more minutes. 6. Assemble fajitas by dividing beef-vegetable mixture evenly on each tortilla, top with remaining ingredients and roll up. SOURCE: Produce For Better Health Foundation via myplate.gov

I would like to send a big thank you to our friends at Lear Corporation Flint for continuing to support your neighbors here at Hurley. Your kind donation of $2,920.00 will bless many people who are experiencing financial hardship in the midst of their cancer treatment. Please know how very grateful we are to be blessed with your generosity!

I would like to extend a warm and grateful thank you to our Title Sponsors Insta Lube and Regional Medical Imaging, along with their partners the Diamond Team made up of the following businesses: Edible Arrangements - Grand Blanc, The Fox 103.9, Streeter Brother, Inc., Fick Landscaping Supplies, Curtis Flowers, Cops & Robbers Ice Cream, Pesto's, Enhanced Chiropractic, and Greater Michigan Orthopedics. They donated a total of $52,819.36.  I am so honored to be able to distribute these funds on behalf of each of you. Your hard work and dedication to our mission is so immensely appreciated!

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Warwick committee Pink Par-Tee for the funds that were recently donated to the Breast Cancer Navigation Fund. A total of $70,000 was donated on December 5, 2022. This is the single largest donation that has ever been received from one group! Your hard work and dedication to the lives of women in our area that can find financial toxicity almost a bigger deal than their cancer deserves recognition. Please accept my most humble gratitude and honor of distributing these funds to those in need. I, along with Hurley Medical Center, want you to know how much you are appreciated. We will work hard to make these funds touch many, many lives.

Sincerely and Gratefully,

Marsha Schmit
