TYLER of the month

Tyler received a gift package that included a pizza party with his team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop and a framed certificate. Congratulations, Tyler!

Even though he is in his first year working as a pharmacist at Hurley, he was actually born here, too. After growing up in the area and moving to Oregon to pursue his Doctor of Pharmacy degree, he stayed out west with his wife and worked in retail pharmacy before moving back to Michigan so that their children could grow up near their families. That’s how he ended up back at Hurley. “I was excited to get into hospital work from retail, and I wanted to get into a hospital where I could see a lot and learn a lot from the experience.” The retail to hospital transition was not the only change when they moved back to Michigan. Add a new home onto that, and Tyler has discovered that necessary renovations are like a second fulltime job, but one that he enjoys. When he is not spending time with wife Kendell and son Liam, or at work, he is likely learning and self-training in his new woodworking hobby.

Tyler also considers his coworkers, both technicians and his fellow pharmacists, the best part of the job. He says, “We really get along as a team and it keeps me excited to come to work. I get to work and have fun. We enjoy each other's company.”

Tyler Main is Hurley’s Employee of the Month for July.

He has been in his current position since September of 2021, working as a pharmacist in the in-patient pharmacy. According to Tyler, his job is all about safety and accuracy. “It’s up to us to make sure patients get what medications they need, and that their entire medicine regimen does not cause any issues.”

Still, his reaction to being nominated for Employee of the Month was “Why me? I was very shocked and surprised. I’m sure there were more deserving people in this department and the hospital at large.” He gives a lot of credit to the technicians he works with in the pharmacy, saying “The techs are super important. We have really great techs, and we have to work together to get medications to where they're needed, when they’re needed, to keep on top of emergent priorities, and to make sure we keep waste down.”

6 • HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER

The work is important, and could be stressful. He says the most challenging part of it all is “when you have to think about the whole picture of a patient, it's up to the pharmacist to make sure all the medications match, and try to anticipate what’s needed.”

Hurley’s VolunteerJulyof the Month, Susan Kale, has a history at the hospital stretching back to 1978 when she began work as a

When she was told that she had been selected as Volunteer of the Month, Susan was surprised, of course, but she also felt honored.

After staying so dedicated for over forty years, the honor is definitely deserved, but she does not feel that way. Explaining why she thinks other people should volunteer at Hurley, she says, “I get the pleasure of knowing that I'm doing something for someone else, and I think other people would enjoy that too.”

volunteer of the month of the month

“I like helping people find their way. They're always so appreciative and I’m glad I can do this thing for them.”

AfterShePracticalLicensedNurse.retiredin2004afterspendingseventeenyearsinthepediatricsunit.somanyyearsdedicatedtocaring for and serving her community, it is no surprise she continues that habit today as a volunteer.

Susan started volunteering in 2009, around the time the main lobby was renovated. She started working at the front desk, and remains the only front desk volunteer today. A normal day sees her greeting patients and visitors and helping them find their destination, whether they are here for an appointment or to visit a patient. On days they are available when she works, Susan passes out floral bouquets and patient mail. She also makes sure there are always wheelchairs available for anyone who needs one. Before COVID-19, she would pass out magazines to waiting rooms, and make sure everyone there had what they needed.

Susan’s approach to volunteering is definitely informed by her experience as a nurse. When asked to explain her favorite thing about volunteering at Hurley, she says, “I like to stay consistent with volunteering. I want them to know they can rely on me. I like helping people find their way. They're always so appreciative and I’m glad I can do this thing for them.”

When not volunteering at Hurley, she spends a lot of her free time spending time with her sister. “We do a lot together,” she says. Susan normally goes for a walk each morning, and she also enjoys reading and riding her bike with friends. She also travels with her husband, who also retired from Hurley in 1999, as manager of the laundry.

“Sue is active, helpful and so kind. Sue not only worked here but continues her service to Hurley into retirement with her volunteerism. She is thoughtful, energetic and always happy. She’s an absolute pleasure to work Directorwith.”of Volunteer and Community Engagement
