Public Service
Loan Forgiveness program
Hurley Medical Center is a qualified employer under the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. We are committed to helping you manage your student loan debt and start on the path to a strong financial future. The path to loan forgiveness can seem complicated, but with a few smart choices early on, you may save thousands of dollars on your student loans. The key is to understand your options.
• Employees who qualify are eligible to have certain federal student loans forgiven after 10 years of qualifying on-time monthly payments.
• You will save the most money if your student loan debt is high, relative to your income—so it pays to get started early in your career when your outstanding debt is the greatest.
• To be eligible for the program, you need to have a qualifying loan, be enrolled in a qualifying repayment plan and you need to certify that you work for a qualified employer.
• If you have FFEL, Perkins, or other loan types that are not Direct Loans, your consolidation application must be submitted online through StudentAid.gov by 11:59 p.m., Eastern time on Oct. 31, 2022.
Our Human Resource Service Center Advisors can help you certify that you work for a qualifying employer once you complete the Employment Certification for Public Service Loan Forgiveness form. You can locate that form by visiting StudentAid. gov and searching for Public Service Loan Forgiveness Form. Remember, you’ll save the most if you get started early—you might even be able to lower your monthly payment as you work toward loan forgiveness, so it pays to start now.

employee of the month
September’s Employee of the Month, Deandria “Dee Dee” Perkins, started as a Public Safety Officer at Hurley in 2019 while she was still working security as a contract employee at General Motors. She explains, “I worked both Hurley and GM at the same time. I had applied to Hurley years ago, and then they just called out of the blue. I came in for an interview and got hired. In my view, I had nothing to lose. And everyone was amazing, so welcoming and warm, I thought that Hurley might be the right place for me.” Her bet paid off, and she eventually left GM after 21 years to work full time at Hurley. She was kind of nervous to work with the public after working in the private sector for so long, but her own welcoming personality and helpful approach to her work have made her a well-known face around the hospital.
As a public safety officer, Dee Dee spends her time fulfilling a variety of responsibilities. On a normal day she will answer and dispatch phone calls, assist with patients, screen guests, patrol the parking lots and perimeter of the hospital, and help wherever she is needed. That adds up to a lot of interacting with the public. She says, “A lot of people don't realize that everyone goes through public safety. We set the tone of that visit.” She embraces that responsibility. Dee Dee explains, “I didn’t work with the public for 21 years, and I realized that I missed it. There can be negativity that comes with being public safety. I know we are always trying to help, but it's not always thought of as helping. But I’m here to set that helpful, friendly tone. I love working with the public.”
Of course, she was shocked to learn that she was being named Employee of the Month. She says, “I just could not believe it. You know, you come to work and do your job and you don’t expect anything. I get my post orders, and I work my post orders and I don’t think anything of it. So I was happy, excited, all of the above.”
When she is not at Hurley, Dee Dee is probably hanging out with her husband, watching TV and relaxing. She especially enjoys shows that focus on crime investigation, though she says, “I don’t have any favorites. I just watch what I watch.” Together they also own and operate a party tent rental business. Additionally she spends a lot of time with her family, including her three children, one granddaughter, sister and cousins.
Dee Dee received a gift package that included a pizza party with her team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop and a framed certificate. Congratulations, Dee Dee!

Hurley Wellness celebrates employees who are passionate about health, whether that means individuals have achieved or are working toward a personal, mental or physical goal or those that foster a culture of wellness. Hurley’s Wellness Hero of the Quarter, Rhonda Powell, Registration Clerk, embodies all aspects of the award as she works toward her own goals and motivates those around her.
Rhonda’s career at Hurley began 12 years ago, when her sister told her about an opportunity. While her sister retired after 27 years, Rhonda is still going strong due in no small part to her dedication to wellness. As a Registration Clerk in Admitting, she spent years primarily working in the Emergency Room, getting incoming patients registered. Now she works in referrals. In either assignment, she spends a lot of time communicating with patients. In referrals, she also spends a lot of time communicating with doctors’ offices to confirm patient referrals. She approaches these interactions with kindness, knowing the impact she can have on a patient. Rhonda explains, “When I have contact with the patient, I like to make sure they’re taken care of. I make sure to treat patients like they’re my own family.”
She was happy to find out about the options that Hurley offers for wellness. Her favorites are the programs at Flint Farmers’ Market and the wellness challenges, both coordinated by Hurley Wellness Services.
quarterly
She says that “When I started seeing the benefits of wellness, I wanted to share that with my department. I started by reminding them about the prizes they could win through the challenges.” She especially enjoys the walking challenges, because she could compare how many steps she had taken to those required to climb mountain paths. She explains, “The wellness challenges always made me want to do better, to maintain my health or get healthier, especially through the winter months when you might want to get out but it's harder.” About five years ago, after years of getting coworkers to participate in these events, she was asked to be a wellness motivator for her department.
Rhonda also likes to motivate by example. One of her biggest personal efforts is to consistently eat with health in mind. She explains, “I always bring my own food. I meal prep on Sundays and bring food throughout the week. People always ask me what I’m eating because it smells so good. It also saves money. I like to shop locally, at the farmers’ market, or anywhere I can get fresh foods to prepare. I’m big on farm to table because I can know the quality of the food I’m eating.”
When asked if she has any tips for wellness, Rhonda says, “I just try to stay positive all the time. People can get negative, so I try to find the positive in the negative.”

HEALTHY HYDRATION & MY PLATE
A grant from Rite Aid Healthy Futures is supporting food access initiatives at the Hurley Children’s Center at the Flint Farmers’ Market.
All patients receive fruit and vegetable prescriptions at every visit to be filled for fresh produce. The prescription is ordered through the electronic medical record by the physician and printed on prescription paper. It can be redeemed for up to $15 of fresh fruits and vegetables at the Flint Farmers’ Market.
The Hydration Station is a fun way for adults and children to learn how much sugar is in various drinks from soda, to juice to sport and energy drinks. They learn what beverages to drink in moderation due to hidden sugar.

You
Hurley’s Volunteer of the Month for September 2022 is Dollie Starling. She’s better known by her middle name, Faye. She has been volunteering at the hospital since her mother had surgery here thirteen years ago. Faye was so impressed by how welcoming and nice the surgical lounge staff and volunteers were that she asked for an application. She explains that feeling is still her favorite part of volunteering, “I love coming in and seeing the happy faces. Everyone is so nice here. Seeing everyone makes me want to help.”
In the thirteen years that Faye has volunteered at Hurley, she has mainly worked in the lobby shop. For six of those years she also walked the goodie cart through the floors for people who could not make it down to the lobby. Now she works in the lobby shop each weekend - every Saturday and every other Sunday. A lot of her responsibilities in the lobby shop will come as no surprise; her and the other volunteers have to run the day-to-day operations, including balancing the cash registers at the end of the day, keeping the goods stocked, and making sure everything is set up and ready for the next shift. More importantly, they greet and help
of the month
patients and visitors pick out gifts and treats. Faye understands the impact that she can have on their day, and says that’s the reason she would recommend volunteering at Hurley to others. She says, “It’s a great fulfillment. This is a great way to give back to the community. If you don’t have anything to do in retirement, you’ll feel really good helping people and letting your light shine.”
Faye was happy and honored to be selected as Volunteer of the Month. She says, “I’m just glad and happy that people would nominate me. I just felt honored.” It’s no surprise that she has a long history of service. Besides her thirteen years here at Hurley, she has been a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church for sixty years. Twentyfive of those years have been spent as president of their Usher Ministry, and twelve as a Sunday school teacher.
When she’s not giving her time to others, she loves to travel, having been around the world to France, Spain, and other countries. She hopes to visit Africa soon. Seeing other cultures holds a special appeal for her, as she explains, “I love seeing different cultures. The food, and it’s awesome how old the buildings are. Everything about it, really. It’s a great experience.”

"I wish I could explain how important and impactful Fayes's volunteerism has been, but it's really beyond description. She is always willing to come in and open the shop or take the Goodie Cart out and from what she has expressed to Michelle (lobby shop manager) and I, Hurley and volunteerism is her happy place. It's pretty special."

Surgical Documentation Tip o’ the Month ~or~ How to Survive the Government Documentation Rules
Don’t Forget to Document AND Quantify Obesity!
The federal government has enough regulations to handcuff even the most astute coder when capturing the complexity of care provided to our patients.
Here’s what you already know: Obesity is defined as having a BMI1 (Body Mass Index) greater than 30. When a patient’s BMI exceeds 40, they are more specifically described as having morbid obesity Morbid obesity is a significant perioperative and intraoperative risk factor that often requires additional precautions and interventions.
Here’s what you may not know: Coders are prohibited from assigning BMI codes without documentation of an associated diagnosis for obesity or morbid obesity by a physician (or supervised extender). BMI documentation may be extracted from clinical , pharmacy, nursing, dietary, or other allied health personnel records.
Let’s look at a clinical scenario and the possible MS DRG outcomes: Your 57 year old patient with LLQ pain, guarding and rebound and was taken to the OR for management of diverticulitis with perforated viscous. The surgery was technically challenging, largely in part to the patient’s habitus; her height and weight were noted as 62 inches and 290 lbs., respectively. Although the patient was slow to ambulate post-operatively and experienced atelectasis, she was discharged home without incident.
MS DRG Description
331 Major Small & Large Bowel Procedures w/o CC/MCC
Average Compensation Average Length of Stay
$10,332.58 3.3 days
330 Major Small & Large Bowel Procedures w / CC $15,399.51 5.7 days
Why the difference?
It’s all in the documentation! In the first scenario, the patient’s BMI was documented in the H&P and anesthesiology records, however you failed to document a clinically significant associated diagnosis in your perioperative notes. Comparatively, in the second scenario, you noted that the patient had “morbid obesity with a BMI of 53 ” As a result, the coder captured the higher level of associated risk, and the patient was afforded a longer stay under your capable care.
The moral?
Precise obesity documentation requires at least two components
or Morbid obesity + BMI)
