Employee Assistance Program In the winter months, it is common to feel a little blue. Many people experience mood changes with less daylight, stress of the holidays, the colder weather, as well as increased demands at work.

Studies show that 60% of Americans feel stressed during the holiday season and 47% are stressed about finances this time of year. There are simple, yet effective, ways to reduce that stress. Make an effort to reach out to loved ones whether by phone, online or in-person. Give back to your community by participating in food drives or other holiday volunteering initiatives. Set aside time for your own self-care. Last, but definitely not least, ask for support.

Hurley Medical Center offers Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) through Hurley Mental Health, as well as The Hartford. The services are confidential and through both benefits the first three counseling visits are at no charge to you.

ADDING E TO DE&I COUNCIL

Recently the Hurley Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) committee added the word Equity to their title (DE&I).

What is the difference between equality and equity and why is it important?

Equality is defined by the distribution of the same resources and opportunities to every individual across a population. As seen in the diagram below, it would be giving people equal sized boxes to reach the apple in the tree. Equity is defined as the customized distribution of resources and opportunities across a population to ensure no subset of groups are at a particular disadvantage over others in achieving their maximum potential. In the

photo below, it shows that different sized boxes were given to ensure no person of any height had difficulty reaching the apples.

This photo is a simplified explanation of a very complex problem. In a workplace as large as Hurley, we strive to create equitable resources for both employees to promote happiness and success in the workplace, as well as to promote better health outcomes for varied populations. Having equitable opportunities means we are exploring people’s cultures, races, ethnicities, medical conditions and more to see where we can affect change. Stay tuned…

Crystal Leonard, RN, is our November Employee of the Month. Working in our Emergency Department for 13 years, Crystal is one of the nurses who stand on the front line of emergency care, serving as first responder to critically injured patients. She works closely with emergency department physicians, trauma surgeons and transport teams to stabilize patients and save lives. “I love working in the emergency department because it keeps me on my toes,” says Crystal. “Every day is different, and I believe that I am making a difference.”

Crystal’s primary responsibilities include delivering emergency medical care as needed; assisting in running codes (such as advanced life support); administering medications and intravenous fluids; providing wound care; maintaining communication amongst doctors, other healthcare professionals, families and/ or law enforcement and arranging access to services, as needed. She graduated from Mott Community College and upon completion of her internship, applied for a position at Hurley in both the emergency department and neuro trauma. She accepted a position in the emergency department and has been there ever since. Hurley being a Level I Trauma Center has

of the month given Crystal the opportunity to provide care to countless patients in both the emergency room and trauma setting. “We see all sorts of patients that have gunshot or stab wounds, falls from all sorts of heights, car accidents and roll overs and all other types of injuries and illness,” Crystal says. “My typical day is caring for all these kinds of patients and more. We are also seeing an increase in COVID-19 patients as well.”

Crystal knows firsthand that her team treats patients who have severe injuries that are likely to threaten life and limb. She explained that treating these types of injuries requires expertise in multiple disciplines and a comprehensive suite of emergency medical services. She recognized this from the beginning of her career. “I have always wanted to work in the emergency department. Level 1 trauma centers provide complete care for every aspect of an injury, and I have witnessed very rough situations. It is not for everyone. I know that it is the place for me though.”

Crystal works with every type of patient from every background who may be facing such extreme circumstances that it may make one wonder what she enjoys about her work. “The adrenaline rush is what I like the most when

working in this high-paced, high-acuity location,” Crystal says. “It feels good that we are all working as hard as we can, and that we all work as a team regardless of how fast pace the environment is. The job can be deeply satisfying but at the same time, it can be hard to mentally prepare for each day with no idea of what is going to come through the door. “ Crystal was taken completely by surprise when nominated for employee of the month. “I could not believe that I was nominated. It was such a wonderful feeling to be nominated and recognized as the Employee of the Month. Crystal acknowledged her team, her supervisors and her managers. “I could not do what I do without my coworkers. I am so fortunate to work with such an amazing group of people.

They always step up and assist. They are extremely dedicated and work very hard. They are like family.”

Crystal also acknowledged her husband and her four children. She does not have a lot of free time, as she not only works full time, is a mom to four children but is also attending school. She mentioned that if she had free time, she does enjoy spending time crafting.

Dr. Alan Klein has made a generous donation to open the Sheppy Dog Child Life Services Endowment. Child Life specialists at Hurley Children’s Hospital help kids cope with the stress and uncertainty of being in the hospital through therapeutic play, preparation for procedures and education to reduce their fear, anxiety and pain.

Dr. Klein has practiced specialized pediatric dentistry at Hurley for more than 40 years and says, “Hurley is the best place, not just in Genesee County, but in Michigan, for kids, especially those very young or with special needs who require very special dental care.”

For a decade, Dr. Klein created matching incentives totaling tens of thousands of dollars that motivated the community to help Hurley Children’s Hospital with the Xbox Game Room Makeover contest, the CU Direct contest and three Vote for Miracles contests, presented by Credit Unions 4 Kids. His final matching gift was in 2019 for the Santa Cares campaign presented by local credit unions. Dr. Klein started the Sheppy Dog fund in memory of his beloved golden retriever. Donations have enhanced pediatric services at the hospital and at Hurley Children’s Center-Sumathi Mukkamala Center at the Flint Farmers’ Market.

Hurley’s Child Life Specialists see 1,000-1,500 patients each month in Pediatrics, Pediatric Intensive Care, Pediatric Emergency, Cardiology, Pre-op Surgery, Gastroenterology, Oncology, and are on-call for Radiology, Neurology, and Rehab. Child Life Services are not billable or covered by insurance. The new endowment will ensure that Child Life will be around for years to come.

C O AT S F O R K I D S A special thank you to all who donated to the 2021 Coats for Kids program. Your support means so much to the children and families of Genesee County. We collected over 100 coats of new and gently used coats. The coats were picked up the middle of December by Troy Cleaners. Coats are boxed separating new and used and the gently used dry cleaned. Troy Cleaners delivers all the coats--both used (that have been dry cleaned) and new to the Salvation Army. The coats are distributed to families living in Genesee County. Through the generous donations of the Hurley Family, we have been able to assist in helping to keep Genesee County children warm. All of you here at Hurley truly make the difference!

S PA R TA N S T R E E T M E D I C I N E - F L I N T Thank you Hurley employees for donations received for Spartan Street Medicine. Also, thank you to team members from Priority Waste who adopted this initiative and delivered their donations to Hurley.

Spartan Street Medicine is a branch of the international Street Medicine Institute that was founded in Pittsburgh, PA. Spartan Street MedicineFlint was founded by third-year medical students from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and College of Osteopathic Medicine. This program is a student-led medical group operating in collaboration with community partners (e.g. day shelters and community kitchens) to provide pop-

up clinics and direct street outreach for people experiencing homelessness in Flint, Michigan. A monthly clinic is held at the Shelter of Flint where patients are seen by medical students and an attending physician. Community outreach trips are held twice a month allowing medical students to directly reach people experiencing homelessness.

Spartan Street Medicine-Flint also collaborates with PATH and REACH teams and My Brother’s Keeper.

People receive resources such as self-care products, over-the-counter medications and education regarding various health topics. Donations received are greatly appreciated, as they assist with providing these desperately needed resources.

Our social workers support patients in the emergency department, the adult and children’s acute hospital, our children’s and mother/baby clinics, outpatient mental health clinic and our inpatient psychiatric hospital.

They are care providers with advanced degrees and complex training who assess and provide interventions and support to patients across the healthcare continuum and in highly specialized areas of care. Our staff joins the interdisciplinary team, working with doctors, nurses, therapists and all the other health professionals helping our patients and families every day.

What is Medical Social Work?

Social Work in the Acute Hospital

Medical social workers are Masters’ prepared clinicians who help patients and families through some of life’s most challenging moments while working towards the best possible outcome. They help people in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and other care facilities and healthcare settings. They work closely with patients and families experiencing mental, emotional, family, financial or other stress related issues affecting their medical condition. They also work closely with patients and families with social barriers, mental health diseases and conditions and substance use disorders.

Medical social workers in the hospital support patients in every specialty and service. In our children’s hospital, they are able to offer services to pregnant women, neonatal intensive care babies and their families, newborns and the women who delivered them, children in our pediatric intensive care unit and medical care units and children in any of our children’s clinics. One of their important roles in this area is to align the social and psychosocial needs of children with the medical care plan that is required.

Another important role is to assist in coping and adjustment to change, grief and loss. Social workers help communicate between the medical team and the family, support the social barriers of the child and family and advocate for the child within the complex hospital system.

What are some of the things that our Social Workers do?

Social Work in Emergency Department Our ED social workers support families of trauma patients by providing the go-between for staff who are providing critical, life-saving care and the families who are waiting for updates and requiring tangible support. They help families understand who will make decisions for those patients and how they will be supported once they are stable. The social workers in ED also provide the first-line support for patients with behavior health challenges, coordinating their admission to in or outpatient services and providing community resources as needed. They coordinate support and resources for substance abuse treatment as well.

hurley news Social Work in Hurley Outpatient Mental Health Social workers at Hurley Mental Health Associates are experienced therapists trained in a variety of clinical approaches that allow them to effectively provide individual and family therapy. They assess a person’s emotional and behavioral issues, work with the patient to identify a treatment plan, deliver the therapy that helps patients understand their issues and identify solutions that allow them to reach their goals. Therapy may be short or long term depending on the nature of the difficulties and needs. Social workers also work on a team with other professionals and are the gatekeepers to psychiatric staff when it’s appropriate to consider medication to augment therapy. Some of the conditions that social workers treat in the outpatient setting include anger, anxiety, attention deficit, the autism spectrum, depression, divorce adjustment, grief and loss, mood disorders, opposition and defiance, psychosis, school problems, stress, substance abuse, trauma and victims of abuse.

The main goal of social workers in the psychiatric unit is to stabilize and support patients who are experiencing intense psychological distress or behavioral issues that are threatening their safety and well-being, or the safety and well-being of others. Duties vary according to work setting. Social workers in inpatient settings often have primary responsibility for putting together the discharge plan. This is not something that is completed right before discharge – it is an ongoing process during much of the time the person is hospitalized. The goal is ambitious: that the person will have the resources to function optimally within the community. Hospital stays are shorter than they were in the past, but patients sometimes need to transition to a residential care center or a day program.

Social Work in Hurley Inpatient Psychiatric Units Social workers in our inpatient psychiatric unit play a variety of different roles from case management, therapy, program management and administrative positions. They provide mental health services to individuals with high needs and may perform psychotherapy and even diagnose mental illness.

They play an integrate role in the implementation of patient-centered care (PCC) within an interdisciplinary treatment team in an inpatient psychiatric unit.

Tarnesa Martin, RN, BSN, Hurley’s Patient Resource & Community Advocate, also known as “Nurse T” serves as a community liaison for identified health concerns, focusing on community education and resources in an effort to reduce health disparities and improve access to care. Tarnesa participates in community outreach and educational events establishing relationships with community groups, minority-owned businesses, faithbased organizations and other trusted channels that serve minority populations. Galilean Baptist Church celebrated their 57th anniversary this year and is known for hosting many events as part of their mission to improve the health of their community.

N O V E M B E R 1 9 TH An event aiming to educate women on menopause and mental illness held at Goggins Hall in Flushing, Nurse T addressed the group on how hormonal levels fluctuating during menopause can lead to women experiencing major depressive episodes. She also shared information on Hurley’s women’s and mental health services.

N O V E M B E R 2 1 ST Representing Hurley at Bountiful Love Ministries at their Self Care Sunday, Nurse T presented information on diabetes, including what diabetes is, who is at risk, diabetes symptoms and information on Hurley’s Diabetes Center.

D E C E M B E R 4 TH Health Alliance Plan, providing information on Michigan health care, hosted an event, “Holiday Jingle,” at the Flint Farmers Market. Nurse T attended the community event providing information on Hurley’s services.

D E C E M B E R 5 TH On December 5th, Nurse T attended and provided Hurley resources at “This is Me,” a fashion show and safe Haven for special needs kids, adults and families at the Capitol Theater in downtown Flint presented by Trendsetters Productions. The goal of the event was to showcase the talents and beauty of special needs kids. The kids walked the runway and stage wearing Flint brands that support the movement “This is Me,” while building their confidence and embracing their challenges!

Hurley Medical Center Helps Community ‘Activate their Health Care Power’ E M I LY S C H W E I C H , S E N I O R C O M M U N I C AT I O N S A S S O C I AT E

On December 13th, Nurse T was featured in an article in “America’s Essential Hospitals” titled Hurley Medical Center Helps Community ‘Activate their Health Care Power.’ Highlights from the article:

For 12 years, Tarnesa Martin, RN, BSN, managed a busy medical-surgical unit at Hurley Medical Center.

There, she faced numerous challenges caring for patients experiencing housing instability, mental illness and other socioeconomic struggles. But this year, she faced her biggest challenge as a health care provider: bringing care from the hospital into the community as Hurley’s inaugural patient resource and community advocate.

‘I’ve been a nurse for 19 years, I care about the city of Flint. I left a job, [which] was 99 percent guaranteed, to come out into the community, so I took a leap of faith to come out here to serve the community that I love,’” Martin says. “‘I’m here because I want to be a part, and I want to make a difference and impact health and wellness in your life.’ And so, they looked, and they were like, ‘Okay, she’s in.’”

Engaging the Community Because essential hospitals, like Hurley, serve large numbers of patients who tend to have lower levels of institutional trust — people of color, communities living in poverty, and uninsured patients — they must work harder to gain trust.

“I create atmospheres where people can create health care power,” Martin says. “So, I say, you’ve got to activate your health care power. Activation starts with you. It doesn’t start with your provider, it starts with you wanting to be healthy and well, and being well informed, so that you can make decisions to become a better version of you.”

“The one thing I did ask the community is, ‘What matters?’ And they said, ‘Well, Nurse T, we just want you to be consistent. If we start seeing you, and you’re out here, we want to keep on seeing you.’ And so that’s what builds trust,” Martin says.

Empowering the Community A second challenge Martin faces is literacy; she keeps her resources between a third and fifth grade reading level. As Hurley faces record emergency department (ED) wait times, Martin has focused recent community education on when to visit the ED and when an urgent care visit might suffice. She works to ensure people are aware of Hurley’s resources and aren’t ashamed or embarrassed about their lack of knowledge.

Hurley Wellness celebrates employees who are passionate about health and wellness, whether that means the individuals have achieved or are working toward a personal mental or physical goal or that they foster a culture of wellness.

The Quarterly Wellness Hero, Alyson LaRose, promotes wellness in her department while also striving to reach her own goals. “I value wellness and think it is very important to maintain your health through healthy eating and active living. I practice this both at home and at work,” said Alyson.

Alyson works in Radiation Oncology located at the Genesys/Hurley Cancer Institute. She began her career in 2009, immediately after graduating from University of Michigan-Flint.

Alyson promotes wellness to her coworkers by encouraging them to walk with her, around the campus, weather permitting, or the inside hallways. She walks every day during her lunch hour for two miles. She also participates and encourages her team to join the wellness challenges. Alyson strives to promote positivity in her department by encouraging her coworkers to be physically active. “I really enjoy the Wellness challenges. Exercising gives physical, emotional, mental and cognitive benefits. However you choose to move, the most important part is that you do!” Alyson noted, “It is important to try different things to see what works best for you. Walking helps to control weight, lower cholesterol, strengthen the heart, reduce stress, decrease the likelihood of serious health problems and promotes an overall sense of well-being.”

When it comes to exercising, Alyson enjoys a little bit of everything. Her preference is running and lifting weights. She is a strong proponent of eating healthy and drinking a lot of water. She uses her free time to be with her two children, ages 9 and 11, and noted that she even incorporates exercise in everyday activities.

For example, Alyson uses the time to run while waiting for the kids to complete their soccer practice. She also encourages her children to be active as well. She enjoys going to the park and enjoys running with her children while they rollerblade. Her husband also practices wellness by lifting weights and sometimes, they exercise together in the gym they have in their basement.

Alyson credits her husband as a strong motivator. “I truly value wellness and think it is important to incorporate both nutrition and exercise in your daily routine,” Alyson notes.

“Exercising is important and it is all about fitting it in any way you can.”

Alyson noted that her main wellness goal is to maintain her weight and a healthy lifestyle.

Her words of encouragement, “Include some sort of physical activity as part of your daily routine. Find ways to include exercise with things that you are already doing.” Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis. It helps you to attain better physical and mental health outcomes, so that instead of just surviving, you are thriving. Wellness is especially important as we age because regular exercise and proper nutrition can help prevent a variety of ailments. Alyson believes strongly in wellness, noting the importance of eating

quarterly wellness hero correctly and exercising every day. Alyson when asked for a wellness tip, “Go for a walk! Walking is free. Walking is exercise. It boosts your mood and lowers stress. Walking is energizing, yet also helps you sleep."

Alyson expressed her appreciation to her coworkers. She recognizes that the environment they work in can be very sad and stressful. She wants to maintain her own wellness while at the same time, share a healthy activity with her coworkers. When asked how she felt about being nominated as the Wellness Hero, Alyson noted, “Honestly, I was totally surprised. I could not be more appreciative. It is truly an honor.”

Alyson exemplifies health and wellness in the workplace. She spends time on the weekend prepping delicious meals for her and her family. During lunch hours, it’s a sure bet you’ll find Alyson getting her daily steps by walking in our parking lot. Bad weather won’t stop her either, she’ll be walking the corridor of our basement! Alyson doesn’t give into any of the tempting food and snacks that are always in our department.

Not only is she a Wellness Hero, Alyson is an outstanding employee, and we are lucky to have her on our team.

DURAND AREA SCHOOLS RAISE MONEY DURING "KIDS HELPING KIDS" FUNDRAISER In October, Hurley Foundation gave a presentation to students and staff at Durand Middle School about all the ways they could make an impact for Hurley Children's Hospital, their local Children's Miracle Network Hospital. After the presentation, students decided to lead their own fundraiser with the help of principal, Rebecca Shankster, and Hurley miracle mom/Durand teacher, Laura Bollinger.

In early December, Mrs. Bollinger, Mrs. Shankster and students presented a check for over $2,000 to Hurley, which was raised by multiple buildings in their district. This fundraiser hit close to home for one of these wonderful students as his mom, Holly, works as a Clinical Specialist in our Emergency Department. We are SO proud of everyone who participated in this inaugural "Kids Helping Kids" fundraiser and grateful to have had the chance to celebrate their efforts!

H E R N I A R E PA I R V I RT U A L E V E N T On Thursday, November 18, a Healthy Living Series “Hernia Repair” was hosted by Hurley. The presentation was made by surgeons from the Hernia Center of Excellence. Topics included learning about hernia treatment options from the ONLY Hernia Center of Excellence in the Region.

W H AT I S A H E R N I A ?

Hernias account for more than 1 million surgeries in the U.S. each year. Although they occur in adults and children alike, men over 40 are most susceptible. Men have about a 25% lifetime risk of developing a hernia, whereas women have less than a 5% risk. A hernia forms when tissue or an organ, often the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot in the surrounding tissue or muscle, typically the abdominal wall. Weak spots may be present at birth or develop over time due to risk factors, like smoking, persistent coughing, obesity, straining during bowel movements and overexertion.

ARE HERNIAS DANGEROUS? Hernias are not always dangerous, but they can cause pain or even progress to an emergency situation if left untreated. When ignored too long, a hernia could become stuck in the abdominal wall, cutting off the intestine’s blood supply. Telltale signs of a hernia are pain or tenderness in the groin, a small bulge that can be pushed back in and is more visible when straining or coughing, and problems eating or having bowel movements. However, up to a third of patients experience no pain at all. Even then, reviewing treatment options should not be postponed.

It is a common misconception that nothing has to be done if a hernia is not causing pain. As Kristoffer Wong, DO, FACOS, explains, “That can lead to problems because usually hernias get bigger over time and the next thing you know, what would have been a simple hernia repair with a quicker recovery ends up being a large hernia repair, with

more downtime, more time off from work and more recovery. The key is to get you back to 100% as soon as possible.”

DO ALL HERNIAS REQUIRE SURGERY? Not all hernias require surgery, but they also will not go away on their own. Speaking with an expert will let you know your options. At Hurley’s Hernia Center, the region’s ONLY Hernia Center of Excellence, our board-certified physicians work with each patient to determine the best treatment method for them. For some, that is surgery, while for others, the watchful waiting approach may work. However, since 70–80% of such patients end up requiring surgery within 10 years, Hurley’s hernia specialists provide patient education to help you weigh your options.

november of the month Hurley’s November Volunteer of the Month, Shannon Chamberlain, has a long history of volunteer work stretching back through high school. When a friend fostered a baby that had spent time in the NICU, Shannon knew what she wanted to do for her next volunteer experience.

She completed Hurley’s volunteer training and the training specific to the NICU. Since starting at Hurley, Shannon has worked in vaccine clinics and the virtual Hurley Radiothon, but she has spent most of her hours in the NICU, and that is right where she hoped to be.

As a volunteer in the NICU, Shannon spends most of her time holding and feeding the babies. But the NICU is a busy place, so she also contributes by helping the nurses keep supplies stocked and getting them whatever they might need. Her efforts are focused on helping the babies and making sure she does all she can to positively impact their time spent in Hurley’s NICU. Shannon says, “It feels good to see how the babies improve week to week. I like to think I’m making some kind of difference in their lives.”

When she is not volunteering at Hurley, Shannon spends most of her time studying and going to school at the University of Michigan-Flint’s School of Nursing. This is her first semester, so volunteering at Hurley is giving her some added experience in the medical field. While she is just starting her education, she hopes to one day work as a pediatric oncology nurse. Shannon likes to spend the little amount of time she has left after school and her volunteer work with her family and their dogs, and her friends. She also loves fishing and the outdoors.

Since she has only been at Hurley since March of this year, she was shocked to be recognized as Volunteer of the Month for November, saying “I just haven’t been here that long. There are people here who have been here longer and have done more.” When she received the email letting her know about the award, she was sure it had been sent in error. It is easy to see her dedication, though, when she explains why people should volunteer in the NICU, saying “it just feels good to contribute something to the community here at Hurley.”

Immunization and Turkey Giveaway Event Hurley Wellness had a successful Be Wise, Immunize event again this past November! Vaccination for Preventable Diseases is considered to be the #1 Greatest Public Health Achievement to reduce death and disease in the United States according to the CDC. Genesee County generally has low vaccination rates in comparison to other Michigan Counties and Nationwide statistics. To support prevention efforts, Hurley Wellness holds this yearly event to provide additional access to our community.

During the 6th annual event, Hurley Wellness put on a Drive Thru Be Wise event with a generous sponsorship from HAP Empowered and partnerships with the Genesee County Health Department (GCHD) and Shea Automotive. The GCHD vaccinated families through their vehicle windows in a drive thru event to maintain better social distancing. Influenza (pediatric, adult, and high dose), as well as Pneumonia and TDaP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, & Pertussis) vaccines were offered to community members with no out-of-pocket cost.

As a giveaway, Hurley Wellness and HAP Empowered gave away over 150 frozen turkeys to community members after receiving an immunization in an effort to ease Food Insecurity throughout Genesee County.

Continued outreach is important to our mission here at Hurley, and we are happy to be a part of keeping our community safe and healthy.

“We like to have adults around for the holiday season, we like to bring in the New Year with lots of people,” says Recco Richardson, PhD. “Children don’t see it like that. They see the idea of people coming around that usually don’t come around or people coming around who in the past have caused them to have consequences, who have lied on them, who have abandoned them or who have compared them to their own children. This is what goes on in the minds of children during the holiday season.”

While we look forward to the New Year, children see the New Year as a new semester in school, changes in classes and as a long stretch through March with no big break. Play games with your kids. Talk with your kids about what interests them.

Here’s how we can help our children with their emotional intelligence #1 Effective Practices: Things they can do on their own to build a routine like mindful breathing, puzzles, exercise. These types of routines help them manage their emotions

#4 Emotional Control: Being able to control our emotions. Anger doesn’t have to be the emotion they pull from. There are thousands of emotions. We can teach them more emotional control.

#2 Internalized Beliefs: Help them recognize what they believe deep down inside. We know what we have taught them, but what do they really believe about themselves when you take away designer clothing, sports, video games? Do they feel safe and secure? Do they have a voice?

#5 Build Resilience: Different than motivation. When you are in the face of adversity, find a way to bounce back even though you don’t feel it. It’s just a matter of time before they are faced with this same thing.

If they don’t learn how to build resilience, it will continue to be a problem in their life.

#3 Adjust, Achievement and Self Esteem: Things don’t always go as planned. Children who struggle with change they need additional encouragement, emotional flexibility. Children want security and to know what will happen next. We can share our own experiences so they will not have a meltdown.

#6 Shape Human Development: It is a lifestyle, religious beliefs. We need to make more of an intentional effort to cultivate their human development. This is something we should work on over the long term, it doesn’t happen in a few months.

#7 Manage Stress: Everyone is stressed out. Our goal should be to help them manage the stress.

Stressors are okay because it can fuel us to achieve.

Stress can spark creativity. We can’t stop the stress, but we can teach kids to manage it.

#8 Stress Tolerance: Ability to tolerate stress. It’s almost an immunity to stress. We can cope with it, it strengthens us and gives us more resolve. Like in the movie Black Panther when his sister was helping him pick out a uniform. When he hit it, he fell back. The uniform absorbed the hit. Add value so next time they are stronger and can manage the stress better.

Stress is the response your body has when you are facing circumstances that force you to act, change or adjust to your environment. Our body is using resources to adjust to the situation that is going on. It doesn’t always have to be negative. Parties or holidays can produce stress even though we enjoy them.

#3 Determine if you’re having an automatic response: Our previous experiences cause us to have automatic responses to things. The amygdala is a compartment in your brain that remembers everything that happens in life and brings up emotions or thoughts when we encounter things similar to the past. We feel what we felt when we initially experienced stress or anxiety. Are your current thoughts rational and factual for what’s happening right now? If the answer is no, it’s probably just a trigger from your subconscious and not a danger in the present moment. Chalk it up as once threatening, but not now.

#4 Accept that uncertainty causes us to feel anxious: It’s normal to feel uneasy this time of year.

Cling to your faith, a higher power or family. Having a #1 Be present in the moment: Be present in what we’re grateful for. Be present for family. Accept things routine will help. Coping doesn’t mean feeling good, coping means tolerating the stress appropriately for what they are instead of judging the situation or until it goes away. Choose healthy foods or exercise judging ourselves. Sharonda Taylor says, “When you instead of comfort foods or alcohol. Help Managing Stress

#2 Do things that can improve your positive emotions: Reward ourselves physically or socially.

Can be as simple as playing a video game, reading a book, having a conversation with a friend, watching a movie, going for a walk or spending time with your animals. “Be more in tune with what’s going on in the present moment rather than slipping into your intrusive thoughts. That can lead you to focus on negative thoughts from the past or fears for the future,” says Taylor.

CLINICAL DOCUMENTATION INTEGRITY SPECIALISTS QUERY PROCESS CONTINUED • Any provider: Physician, PA or NP is allowed to answer the query. If you are the clinician documenting on the record, please look for a query and answer it. The clinician that answers the query will get the credit, even if the query is not addressed to you. A record is being maintained documenting this information.

• Include your query response in your progress notes and follow the daily progress notes with the progression of the diagnosis. Example: pneumonia resolving, resolved, ruled out, etc.

• A diagnosis that is documented on admission should never be left out of the record. It should be specified as ruled out or resolved.

• Be certain to include all pertinent diagnoses, including those in the query response, in the discharge summary.

• You may receive an email message, sent through EPIC or phone call from CDIS, reminding you of an outstanding query, if it has not been answered within a few days.

WAYS TO RESPOND TO A QUERY Queries are asked to obtain your professional judgment based on the review of the clinical indicators. Accurate, consistent, specific documentation supports the true picture of the patient in the EMR.
