Please allow us to welcome you to the 23rd Annual HUPE Conference, and thank you for choosing to attend the biggest annual ELT event in Croatia. We would like to greet all newcomers to the conference and thank all our loyal friends who keep coming back.

We are proud to inform you that this conference is once again being held under the auspices of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the first edition of the conference organised in cooperation with the Education and Teacher Training Agency (AZOO).

Hopefully, the fact that the HUPE Conference is now part of the official In-service Training Catalogue made it easier for you to attend the event. We would also like to extend our special thanks to the British Council Croatia for their continuous support to HUPE in all our efforts.

23rd Annual HUPE Conference programme provides participants with an extensive choice of high quality, engaging educational sessions delivered in a highly practical learning environment. Each session is led by either a local or international speaker motivated to present all participants with the latest findings, trends and methods from the world of ELT. We are sure that after browsing the conference programme, everybody will find a plenty of sessions relevant to their context and needs.

On Saturday, at 18:30, all active HUPE members will have the chance to take part in our Annual General Meeting where HUPE Executive Committee members will inform you of all the things that happened over the course of the year. Please attend the meeting and have your say on all the issues concerning HUPE and help us shape the future of the association. This year this is of even greater importance because at the AGM we will have elections for the new Executive Committee that will model HUPE over the following two years. If you would like to have a bigger inluence on the HUPE future, please visit our registration desk and submit your nomination proposal to become a member of the Committee. At the end of the meeting a lucky person will receive the main prize of the conference – a chance to take part in a teacher training course in Devon, UK.

Plenary Speakers Evelina Miščin

Evelina works at College of Business and Management “Baltazar Adam Krčelić” in Zaprešić, Croatia as a senior lecturer and also at School of Medicine in Zagreb as a part-time teacher. She has a PhD in linguistics.

Her particular areas of interest are ESP, especially business and medical English, collocations, using technology in teaching. She is the author of a few secondary school textbooks and dictionaries as well as of several scientific and professional articles.

Gary Anderson

Gary was Pedagogical Director of the language program at the former American Center in Paris where he co-ordinated and taught classes for all ages of learners. He was President-elect of TESOL France when he joined Cambridge University Press as International Teacher Trainer. He has since given talks in over 60 countries on five continents, including several times in Croatia and at previous HUPE conferences.

Philip Warwick

Philip is a qualified teacher trainer who has been involved in language teaching for over 20 years, working in many countries including Brazil, China, Italy and Argentina. He is currently Director of Teaching for a private language school in the Czech Republic and Academic Co-ordinator for Embassy Summer schools in the UK. He is a speaking examiner for international exams and has taught on several CELTA courses and regularly delivers presentations for Pearson.

Gwendydd Caudwell

Gwendydd is Aptis Product Development Manager for the British Council based in Dubai. In 2009 she took the Roehampton Theory and Practice of Language Testing course as a means to understand the rationale behind some of the tests she was using with her students in her teaching career. This sparked her interest in this area and she completed her MA in Language Testing with Lancaster University in 2012. Gwendydd has extensive experience in teaching, teacher training and managing Teaching Centres for the British Council around the world. She is responsible for the research and design of new variants of Aptis and British Council tests and has also worked on designing and implementing tests in different contexts such as the Science Olympiad Foundation in India and a Young Learner test for a large project in Uruguay. Her particular areas of interest are rater judgements and Young Learner assessment and is basing her PhD on this topic.

Paul Dummett

Paul is a writer and teacher based in Oxford in the UK. He ran his own school in Oxford for 8 years quitting in 2008 to concentrate full-time on writing. His mission is to provide learners with content that is meaningful and thought-provoking. His experience has taught him that learning occurs best when the vehicle is a narrative that learners can engage with and learn from. His areas of expertise are business English, the energy sector and adult general English. Recent titles include two levels of the LIFE series of coursebooks

by Cengage / NGL (2012).

Deborah Healey

Deborah has taught English and trained teachers for over 35 years. She currently offers online courses for teachers internationally through the University of Oregon’s American English Institute and teaches in the Master’s program in Linguistics, Language Teaching Specialization. There are about 20,000 students in the MOOC that she co-created and co-teaches, Shaping the Way We Teach English. She has presented extensively throughout the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, and Latin America. She is a co-author of TESOL Technology Standards: Description, Implementation, Integration and part of the Trace Effects (computer game) team. Her Ph.D. is in Computers in Education. Dr Deborah Healey is a TESOL Int. Board member.

You are kindly requested to wear your name badge during the conference at all times. The colour of the badge enables you to identify people who can help you during the conference. Sessions We are glad to offer you sixty-two sessions this year.

In order to allow things to run smoothly all speakers and participants must vacate the session room immediately at each session end time. Members of the conference organizing committee will be present at each session and will notify the speakers of the time left until the end of the session. We kindly ask all speakers to adhere to the conference schedule and finish their session on time.

They can be used to teach about vocabulary, but also the cultural context, authors, periods in history... This is why in this workshop we will explore all the ways in which a certain type of literary text – crime story – can be explored in the class. We will show that it can be used to develop all the language skills, from reading and listening to speaking and writing.

This talk will deal with the research whose aim was to investigate to which extent collocations are covered in our primary and secondary school textbooks. The second aim was to test the collocational competence of primary and secondary school children and to analyse the results.

We’ll be investigating how to enhance very young learners’ thinking skills—along with their English!

We’ll try out activities, stories, songs and games from Super Safari and Super Minds Starter that develop children’s foreign language competence while also promoting the interpersonal and thinking skills they need as they grow older.

In this talk we will adress psychology of reading, psychology of second language acquisition and neuroscience. At the end of the talk, there will be a discussion panel in which we will talk about certain issues of the classroom e.g. learning environment, teacher’s mind sets, misconceptions that devolve our teaching and how good are we in understanding the processes that are happening in language acquistion. You will also have an opportunity to see certain materials that wll encourage your students cognition.

It is now easier and more accessible than ever before to make your own short videos. This workshop aims to equip you with basic skills to shoot and edit video using mobile devices and give you ideas for using short videos to teach. Bring your smartphones and tablets PCs!
