History

100 years of weaving art and Tradition Our own story dates back to the year 1918, when Carl Albrecht founded a weaving mill of the same name, with 48 looms. The textile industry had an excellent infrastructure even then, and Switzerland ranked amongst the pioneers in spinning and weaving technology. When Carl Albrecht handed the business over to his son in 1927, the company already had 84 looms and – with that same reliability that still distinguishes us today – successfully overcame economic crises and the Second World War. When Robert Morgen joined the company in 1941, the name was changed to Albrecht + Morgen, which was later abbreviated to the name we bear today: ALUMO. From the 1950s onwards, we have been specialized in the finest cotton fabrics for shirts and have continually developed our expertise. With our artisanal character, we continue to this day to make a significant contribution to the survival of a traditional Swiss craft. But equipped for the future with one of the most advanced weaving mills in Europe.

Cotton

Extra-Long staple (ELS) Cotton Gossypium barbadense, also known as extra-long staple (ELS) cotton, is a species of cotton plant that has been cultivated to have staples longer than 35 mm that are associated with high quality products.

Varieties of ELS cotton include WISICA Sea Island, American Pima, Egyptian ELS Gizas, Indian Suvin.

Just 3% of the worldwide cotton production satisfies this standard and only 10% out of these are meeting the higher Alumo standards!

Yarn

Spinning Alumo strictly uses two-ply yarns. Number English (industry standard grading) from 80/2 to 240/2.

While for price reasons often in shirting's only single yarns are used.

Two- ply yarns, are composed of two single strands.

The higher the number the finer the yarn.

Benefits of Two-Ply • 20% better strength than single-ply

• Fabric surface will be more even • Texture, hand feel is more beefy than singles • Luxury luster and softness • Smooth fabric surface with substantial hand feel To illustrate the fineness - 1 gram of our Soyella yarn (NE 170's) would extend 145 meters!

Finishing

Sustainability An very important part in our process is the finishing. Our Swiss Finish know how has a tradition of more than 200 years !

Why finishing?

We improve the look, performance like shrinkage and reach a crisp white shade and the typical silky soft hand feel.
