Jersey. For business. For Life

1

The largest of the Channel Islands, and once part of the Duchy of Normandy when William the Conqueror invaded England, Jersey remained loyal to the English Crown after Normandy was lost by the English Crown, and so was granted a special relationship that today means that Jersey is a self governing British Crown Dependency that has its own financial, legal and judicial sytems.

Jersey is steeped in history with its fine castles built to withstand subsequent attacks from the French and structures built by the German forces during WW2 when the Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied.

Benefitting from a thriving financial industry developed over many decades, Jersey is prosperous and is enjoyed by 108,000 people from different origins who have made Jersey their home.

The island boasts many wonderful beaches, little harbours, countryside and cliff walks that add to its charm and beauty.

It is a place where we feel safe, where there are many superb restaurants supplied with fresh seafood and the famous Jersey Royals and Jersey milk.

Residents and visitors keep busy and active enjoying the sea and land sports.

Those of us who already live and work here feel blessed and, if you are looking to settle here too, here are just a sample of the properties available, though we have more at all price levels and on our Confidential List, so register with us.

Beauty Sleep: The Luxe Italian Linens of Your Dreams

Beloved by stars of the silver screen, Pratesi is back in business creating bed linens to swoon over June 1, 2022

Hollywood’s glitterati have always known the value of a good night’s beauty sleep, and for the biggest stars of the silver screen, nothing but a five-star slumber between Pratesi’s handmade linens would do—so much so that Elizabeth Taylor once reportedly checked out of a hotel because they were missing from her suite.

It’s labor-intensive. After the linens are cut they are sent to be embroidered, again by hand, then it’s back to the cutters to trim. There are so many ‘hand touches’ —

The story of Pratesi wouldn’t be out of place in a fairy tale. It began in 1896 in a small village outside of Florence, Italy, when wine merchant Remigio Pratesi fell in love with a local beauty and commissioned a set of handwoven linens to win her heart. So luxurious was the bedding it took local seamstresses two years to embroider and sew. A year after Pratesi gave his sweetheart the gift they were married. Word of the linens’ unparalleled quality spread and soon they became much sought-after by local noblemen.

So, in 1906, the house of Pratesi was born. From its first shop on the Tuscan coast, Pratesi’s reputation was enhanced by its clientele. It created a collection for Coco Chanel, supplied European royalty, and was appointed to design a set of linens for the Vatican. A flagship store in Milan was followed by another on New York City’s Madison Avenue as the company grew globally. For more than a century, Pratesi was the go-to brand for exquisite linens for exclusive clientele. Now, after a change in ownership and brief hiatus in production, the company has relaunched.

Reinventing Pratesi

“It is such a storied brand and bringing it back to life is an honor and a journey of love,” says MIchelle Klein, global CEO of Sferra, which has bought the company with the intention of restoring it to its former glory.

“It’s been like putting a puzzle back together,” she says. “We’ve spoken to people who previously worked here, who knew the DNA of the brand, and we’ve combed through the archives and studied the past to provide exactly what today’s Pratesi client expects.”

Those studies included looking at materials and construction. Sferra has retained Pratesi’s signature fabric Angel Luxe, so named for its heavenly softness, woven from rare, extra-long Egyptian-harvested cotton: “The finest in the world,” Klein says.

Retaining the same raw cotton was as important as maintaining the process of production. Klein has engaged the same caliber of traditional craftspeople to secure the quality the brand demands. The cotton is transported to northern Italy to be woven in mills before being sent to ateliers to be hand-cut.

“It’s labor-intensive,” Klein says. “After the linens are cut they are sent to be embroidered, again by hand, then it’s back to the cutters to trim. There are so many ‘hand touches.’”

The company even went back to the original packaging-maker. “We have kept the trademark orange packaging of the original brand so each Pratesi piece is beautifully laid out and presented for our customers. We had to get that right.”

Klein’s passion for the tradition and longevity of the linens brand is matched by her eagerness to plant Pratesi firmly in the present. “We remain true to our heritage but with some tweaks and add-ons we are relevant for today.

“We have changed the color of the embroidery on our legacy designs to offer a more contemporary look. Rather than a scalloped edge we offer a flat one and our Icona line has a beautiful stylized ‘P’ logo to show we’re moving forward.

“We have a new, innovative percale called Paradise, a slightly finer weave, which forms the base of our Federico collection, to sit alongside Angel Luxe. Both are cool and crisp, and we also have two jacquards with a sateen finish and slightly warmer feel—we want to make sure we have something for everyone. We even use recycled paper in our packaging.

“It’s vital for a loyal fanbase who demand quality but also want something to fit in with their home and what they already have,” she continues. “We want them to think it’s great that Pratesi is back.”

Collecting guide: Starting a ‘Bordeaux and beyond’ wine cellar

Auctioneer Charles Foley offers an eight point plan for new collectors, from choosing the right vintages to the rules for storing those precious bottles

1. It really is a matter of taste

Buy what you like, whether that is the cavernous depth of a Classed Growth Cabernet, the ethereal charm of a Burgundian Pinot Noir, or the floral aromas of a Sauvignon Blanc.

Fondness for certain foods may relate to your tastes for different wines. Use this to your advantage by seeking out and buying only what you will enjoy drinking in the same way you shop for ingredients for favoured recipes.

If you like sushi then perhaps you should explore the crus of Chablis. If steak is often found sizzling on your stove perhaps an Argentinean Malbec is more your bag. Wines usually have a suitable dancing partner — Sauternes with blue cheese, Champagne and oysters, Syrah and game, and so on.

2. Keep a head for numbers

Strong vintages make all the difference. Stellar vintages in Bordeaux for example — 1982, 1986, 1989, 1990, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 — will have prices to match the high quality. Seek out lesser young vintages such as 2012 and 2008, which are not so highly priced but still have bags of concentration and complexity. If your birth year happens to be a good vintage (see Bordeaux charts online), count your blessings and start stockpiling curious bottles to celebrate with in years to come.

3. Seek out breadth and depth

The latitude and longitude of wine is breadth and depth, enabling an enthusiast to draw parallels between the same grape variety grown at opposite ends of the earth, or explore the effect of Mother Nature on different vintages of the same wine.

Finding a much-loved wine is a great thing and can lead you to new discoveries. If a bottle of 2009 Bordeaux blew you away then you may wish to explore Napa Valley wines such as Shafer’s Hillside Select or Harlan Estate, which are usually Cabernet/Merlot dominant, or McLaren Vale’s powerful Cabernets in Australia.

And why not seek out horizontals and verticals to discover the depth of a particular wine? Avid fans of Bordeaux may collect various wines

from Châteaux in the same year as a horizontal to discover the variation between one patch of vines and the next. Or you may wish to assemble a run of vintages of a particular wine for a superb vertical tasting.

4. Find a critic whose palate you trust

In days gone by there were only a handful of trusted wine critics; today we are spoilt for choice. Finding a voice that you trust in the melee of opinion available is not easy but will pay dividends as recommendations will be made that concur with your own preferences. Much is made of the difference between the American and British palate, with the former, perhaps best typified by Robert Parker, the svengali of fine wine, thought to enjoy higheralcohol, more robust and concentrated red wines. The British palate, meanwhile, typified by Jancis Robinson MW, is thought to favour higher-acidity, lighter-alcohol wines with complexity and elegance of structure.

5. Store your wine in a cool, dark place

Putting the wine to bed in a cellar is the best way to guarantee it a longer life. Lying it horizontally in a rack means the liquid is in touch with the cork, which prevents it from drying out.

A perfect cellar should be cool, between 11° and 14°, with 12° striking the most happy medium. Temperature swings will affect the taste of the wine — too hot and the wine will age quickly with cooked flavours. If the cellar is too cold the cork will suffer from low humidity and begin to dry out, causing seepage and oxidative flavours.

Bottles like nothing better than sitting in the dark; sunlight will dissipate the molecules in the wine and leave it insipid and colourless. Light bulbs may fade labels but as the glass is dark most low-level light will not cause harm to the wine. Perhaps the best tip for new collectors is to simply leave the bottles in their original cases.

6. Meet the winemakers

Serious wine collectors can be found pacing the terraces of Quinta do Noval, cycling around the vineyards of Champagne and trekking up the flinty slopes of a the Mosel Valley.

New experiences, new wines and a wealth of knowledge can best be gained by packing your bags and jetting off to your nearest vineyard. Most wineries offer tours for a small fee and many merchants and auction houses will host tastings with a range of great wines to get your teeth into. One of the best in London is the Decanter Fine Wine Encounter, which happens twice yearly and sees winemakers pitching up with their bottles.

7. Plan your year using the wine trade calendar

The wine trade has its own season, which is useful to know. In late January merchants will offer Burgundy En Primeur (wine sold in barrel from the latest vintage for bottling and delivery in two years’ time). In March/ April Bordeaux will host its own En Primeur, and collectors can visit châteaux or expect merchants offerings in their inbox. In May, Italy holds tastings of Barolo, and most London merchants will follow suit with offers of younger Barbaresco and Baroli. In November, most merchants focus on the Rhône Valley and Christmas offerings of hearty reds and Ports. Christie’s marquee weeks are in May and November in Geneva and Hong Kong and June and December in London.

8. Youth and old age

In youth, fine wines are generally robust, vital, yet somewhat one-dimensional in their appeal. The old adage is that once a certain age is reached, there are no great wines, only great bottles. It is nothing short of tragic when corks are pulled on older bottles and it quickly becomes clear that a once glorious bottle is now oxidized, lifeless — the victim of circumstance, of neglect.

Perhaps the relative frailty of these older bottles helps add to the joys of finding a great one. When fully mature wines show well, they can be transcendently wonderful. Youthful wines may show a vitality that a bottle approaching its half-century would struggle to muster, but there is nuance, charm and a singular sense of character in a bottle of Latour 1961 that a 2000 or 1982 could only dream of.

The Definition of Luxury: Experts and Tastemakers Have their Say

Now that it’s used to describe everything from a $1 million sports car to a bar of chocolate, we asked a range of experts to weigh in on what truly defines luxury

In recent times, luxury has become a shorthand definition for objects that we’re passionate about collecting—art, wine, jewelry, handbags—as well as the special experiences we covet, like exclusive resort stays, fine dining with friends, yachting in open water under clear blue skies… So, do we use it too often — and is there a better way to describe what we’re trying to express?

Yes, say the experts we spoke to. In order to convey the true quality of an experience they believe the word should be used as a noun—as in the ‘luxury’ of something—rather than the adjective, as in ‘luxury cars,’ which adds very little to a description.

At Christie’s International Real Estate we believe ‘luxury’ can— and indeed should—be used when discussing client service. It is a luxury to serve the world’s most discerning buyers and sellers, a fact that has never been lost on Christie’s throughout the company’s 250-year history.

Here, in a series of profound and personal observations, architects, artists, designers, and other tastemakers share their definition of luxury, too.

“Luxury is choice, time, space, and freedom of the mind, spirit, and body. Today, more than ever before, the old saying ‘the world is about people’ brings up the most important aspects of life. Having the people where and when you wish to see them is the real definition of luxury.” Arik Levy, artist and designer

At Christie’s International Real Estate it’s our mission to ensure every one of our clients enjoys the luxury of first-class advice from specialists they can trust. Pictured: Château de La Roche in Alpine, New Jersey
Luxury enables effortless living. Our homes shouldn’t be a burden to us, they should provide the backdrop for enriching our lives - Kathy Scott 17
“ “

“After the time we have had recently, freedom seems to be the most luxurious gift we can be given. The freedom to move around, to travel, to swim in the sea, to see our friends and family without fear. That’s my great luxury. And eating a lot of chocolate, too.”

“The pandemic has revealed to me that the real luxuries these days are the shared experiences that many of us, including myself, often took for granted previously. A multi-course meal at a great restaurant; seeing an outdoor theater performance with friends; sitting at a sidewalk cafe and people watching. These moments of the shared rituals of city life are more luxurious now than ever.”

“It’s Effortless and Elevates the Ordinary”

“Luxury is freedom from care. When design is carefully tailored to its user and environment—by responding to its specific climate, addressing fundamental functional needs, and using beautiful, durable materials—it enables effortless living. Our homes shouldn’t be a burden to us, they should inspire us and provide the backdrop for enriching our lives.”

“I’m a great believer in splurging on luxurious versions of everyday items, because then I can be certain of daily doses of pleasure, rather than saving everything up for the amorphous concept of ‘best.’ So it’s heavenly-scented soaps by Ortigia, delicious toothpaste by Nano, soft bedlinen such as brushed cotton from The White Company, Chanel No.5, and a good red lipstick for the school run.”Jessica Fellowes, author of The Mitford Murders and Downton Abbey books

“It Can Be Measured in Moments”

“I like to start my day with meditation—giving myself a moment of headspace before opening up inboxes and compiling todo lists always feels like the ultimate definition of luxury. On a material level, I have an old pair of Giorgio Armani black label cashmere trousers that I love. To anyone else they just look like an ordinary pair of gray trousers, but the cashmere is so soft and they’re so well cut that it always feels like a special treat to put them on.” Steven Short, editor, Christie’s International Real Estate magazine

“The greatest luxury is time. When you’re younger you actually believe that you can be bored. As you get older, you realize that there is never enough time in the day for family, work, exercise, reading, thought, and sleep.” David Rabin, founder and operating partner of Jimmy at Modernhaus

“It’s All About Experiences”

“More than ever, as we emerge from the pandemic, we hear from our clients that the greatest luxuries are based in extraordinary experiences. Looking at an exceptional object, being inside a fabulous residence, visiting a glorious location, or learning from thoughtful programming are just some examples.” Bonnie Brennan, President, Christie’s Americas

SoHo “Normal is the new luxury. It’s dinner with friends, deciding on Monday you want to catch the Eurostar to Paris, or booking theater or concert tickets on the same day.” Alex Proud gallerist, club and restaurant owner.

“Being able to choose plants for their aesthetic value and growing things for pleasure, rather than producing food to feed your family, is a luxury we don’t always consider.” Aileen Scoular, garden designer and journalist.

Luxuriously renovated country estate

Once a traditional granite farm in the countryside, this stunning 10,500 sq ft home now combines the beauty of traditional pink Jersey granite with modern day living, having been subject to a major renovation in 2014 that included new roof, rebuilt insulated walls, latest heating, plumbing, electrical systems and new flooring.

Today, it will appeal to discerning owners who seek privacy, security, various external spaces for entertaining, including the beautiful Italian style garden, and plentiful and varied internal accommodation for a family and guests.

This country estate is set amidst 10 acres of equine land and enjoys open country views.

What were previously granite cottages adjoining the main house, have now been incorporated into the home to provide extended, spacious open plan eating, dining and living space, whilst a formal dining room, and a library with the original exposed granite fireplace with log burner, add to the charm of the accommodation.

The large kitchen/dining area is by Charles York.

There are eight stylish and luxuriously furnished bedrooms, five of which are in the main house.

The ensuite bathrooms have been lavishly equipped by luxury bathroom supplier, C P Hart, with stylish baths, including a large feature bath by Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, as well as large showers. A pair of inset washbasin stands, also by Jaime Hayon, add to the unique design of the bathrooms.

A large original granite barn has been cleverly linked to the main house by a glass, floor to ceiling living area that overlooks the pretty courtyard to the east and the swimming pool and patio via sliding glass doors, to the west.

This room is light and spacious and provides for an ideal room to enjoy summer days in and out of the pool and the evening sun.

The linked converted barn provides a variety of additional space

including a contemporary second ‘cooks’ kitchen by Minotticucine, boot room, storage rooms, an entertainment room, plus gym/home office with its own external access. It also includes a changing room and shower room with direct access to the swimming pool.

You are in safe hands

Today’s global aviation industry is one of the most highly regulated in terms of both aircraft technology, navigation and the skills set required to become a pilot.

From the wonder of flight being achieved by the pioneer brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright in 1903 - such inspiration was met with equal danger. In the 1920s the first laws were passed in the USA to regulate civil aviation; and the rest of the world followed quickly after.

Spearheading aviation training initiatives today within Gama Aviation is Regional Director and head of the Jersey Fleet, Captain Tim Pedley.

Tim is one of the first European recipients of a Master Aviator award from FlightSafety International (FSI).

FSI was founded in the 1950s in the US and is today a recognised world leader in aviation training. FSI’s Aviator programme was developed to push the boundaries of proficiency and equip pilots for the unexpected. Already experienced pilots are put in real life situations in the often gruelling flight simulator sessions. The training necessitates enhanced decision making under high stress and the need for urgent, complex choices; preparing aviators to react with the safest and correct response to a broad range of demanding, unexpected situations.

With over 30 years’ experience on various aircraft types, Tim is Chief Pilot of the Gulfstream G280, a ‘super midsize’ aircraft recognised for its revolutionary swept wing design and engine technology which maximise fuel e ciency and support environmental sustainability.

As part of the specialisms of his training, due to the nature of the aircraft and the destinations chosen by many of Gama Aviation’s Jersey based customers; Tim selected the North Atlantic and the high altitude and recognisably challenging airport of the French ski resort of Chambery.

Tim says: “Safety is a given in all of Gama Aviation’s flight operations. At an individual, fleet and Company level, enhanced technical flight skills can only serve to drive standards ever higher which directly translates, in my opinion, to safer flying.

“As well as managing Gama Aviation Jersey, it’s a privilege and an honour to carry passengers as part of my challenging and exhilarating career; and it’s the best view from any o ce I’ve ever seen. But doing so safely is the most important job of all.”

The sky’s the limit when buying property in Jersey, not your mortgage

Jersey is the location of some of the most glorious homes in the world. From country houses to seaside apartments, every parish has its perfect property. While finding your dream home may take time and effort, finding the right mortgage to secure it can be easier than you think.

At Santander International, mortgages really do come in all shapes and sizes, which is why we’re prepared to think big when it comes to our loans.

Figures from Locate Jersey show that in 2020*, 15 new High Value Residents moved to Jersey, while 20 new High Value Residencies were approved. That year, High Value Residents invested £77 million in property in the Island, contributing £4.9 million in stamp duty.

Estelle Armour, Head of Mortgage Sales, Santander International, said: “We cater for the whole market with mortgages so far ranging from a few hundred thousand pounds up to £7.5 million. Every case is different and when it comes to more complex cases, being flexible really helps.”

This scale of loan can be particularly helpful for new residents moving to the Island, who may still be in the process of selling their home, or who intend keeping a property in another jurisdiction.

Estelle said: “Sometimes new residents are waiting on the sale of another property or are perhaps waiting for proceeds to come in from a business sale. A short term, interestonly loan may be one way of helping a

family relocate and get established in their new home in Jersey straight away, rather than having to rent first, or delay a relocation.”

For Jersey residents who are looking to buy or create their forever home, thinking big about your mortgage can also be a way forward.

The higher end of the local market can be very competitive, with people having a particular house in mind as their dream home for many years before it comes on the market. When it finally does, a standard salary assessment might not cut it.

With its team of experienced mortgage specialists, and local underwriters, Santander International can look at every mortgage individually and offer more flexible solutions.

“For people who are self-employed, or who have their wealth tied up in a business or in various assets, finding the right mortgage may be tricky.” Estelle said. “However, we treat every case on its own merits and think outside the box to come up with a solution.”
