Do you know Edna and Harold?
• Issue No 87 • Newcastle’s favourite little community newspaper • July 2021 •
The back of this photo reads simply: Ed & Harold, Waratah
It is hoped that readers of The Local may help to identify the people in the photograph at left and those on pages 4 and 5. The photo of the couple at left has ‘Ed & Harold, Waratah’ written on the back. Does anyone recognise the couple who may have lived in Waratah from the 1930s to the 1950s? It’s a mystery posed to us by Hilary Oliver of New Lambton. Ms Oliver says the photos were developed from negatives found in a travel trunk belonging to the famous Wagnerian opera singer, Florence Austral. In the 1920s and 30s Florence performed in the opera houses of Europe and the United States. She was recognised as Australia’s greatest dramatic soprano of her time. Florence lived the last 16 years of her life in Newcastle. She died in a Mayfield nursing home in 1968. (continued on pages 4 & 5)

Déjà vu all over again
So there we have it. Turns out this year is probably no different to last year. COVID is still winning. Sure, a vaccine rollout is underway, albeit at a glacial pace. Consumer demand and therefore business conditions have been relatively strong for most industries in recent months. Yet public enemy # 1 is still very much amongst us. At a local and personal level, the timing of the current upgraded public health orders could not have been more painful. As you read here earlier in the year, I’ve had the absolute pleasure of working with a number of talented, driven and committed local people in recent months as we put together a celebration of Lambton’s 150th anniversary as a township. Talk about giving busy people a job to do if you want it done. It was inspiring to see the organisational skills and tenacity of these people. I won’t name them here lest I embarrass them. That’s not why they joined the committee. We managed to put on the weekday and Saturday daytime events. Everything ran to plan, even the weather. But at 4pm on the Saturday, just 18 hours before our community birthday party in Lambton Park was due to start, the event had to be cancelled. We know how much the community was looking forward to the Love Lambton 150 Sunday event. And we the committee were so excited to be able to bring it to you. But everyone’s health and safety is everyone’s responsibility. Wash hands and stay home when you can. Mask up and keep your distance when you can’t. www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au
Composting revolution is here Newcastle households now have the opportunity to take up home composting and reduce the amount of food waste going to landfill. Residents are being offered a 75% discount off the recommended retail price as well as free shipping of selected composting, worm farming and bokashi fermenting products. Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said that “In Newcastle, around 30% of the waste in our red-lidded bins is organic and food waste. Per household we throw away an average of 135kg of food waste each year and home composting is one way we can combat this.” “Composting and worm farming are both fantastic ways to recycle scraps from the kitchen while providing a rich fertiliser for the garden” Cr Nelmes said. “Households with no garden, or limited space, can still get involved by choosing the compact bokashi bin, which ferments a large range of food scraps including meat, citrus and dairy, so there’s a way for everyone in the community to get involved. Newcastle Local Government Area residents can purchase a home composting system from the Compost Revolution website at the subsidised price and it will be delivered to their door free of charge. Before making their purchase, residents will need to complete a simple training program either online or in person to ensure they choose the right home composting program for their household and learn how to compost successfully. The discounted products available are: • Dirt Vader compost bin plus compost revolver; • The Farm worm farm plus 1,000 worms; and • Urban Composter bokashi bin + 1L enzyme refill + scrap smasher. “Composting is something all of us can do to turn a
Newcastle libraries manager, community programs & partnerships Alexander Mills, lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes, City of Newcastle waste education & program coordinator Therese Davis and workshop presenter David Sivyer from Feedback Organic problem into a valuable resource while doing our bit for the planet.” David Gravina, CEO of the Compost Revolution, said. The home composting program was aunched in June, with products available to purchase online. Product numbers are limited and will be on a first come, first served basis. For more information visit newcastle.nsw. gov.au/living/waste-and-recycling/food-waste This project is a NSW Environment Protection Authority, Waste Less, Recycle More initiative, which is part funded from the waste levy. Home composting workshops will be held on Saturday 10 July: 2pm – 4pm at Hamilton South Estate Centre Care Hall, Monday 6 September: 2pm – 4pm at Hunter Multicultural Communities Waratah and Saturday 16 October: 2pm – 4pm at Wallsend Library.

Amongst other items in the trunk were some negatives and the owner of the trunk had them developed. The people look very similar and one distinct photo is the lady holding a trident (facing page). The photo of the lady reclining in the chair (at left)with a book, has ‘Edna, Waratah’ written on the back. Perhaps these people were friends of Madame Austral. If you can help with any information about the people in these photos please contact The Local in the first instance by email mark@hunterlocal.com.au or phone 0455 210 000. Ms Oliver has been researching the life and career of Florence Austral, who was the first singing teacher at the newly formed Conservatorium of Music at Newcastle in 1952. For more information about Florence Austral, there will be a free presentation held at the Newcastle Digital Library, 12 Stewart Avenue Newcastle West, on 14 July from 6-7 pm. Bookings are essential through the library website.

BUNYIPS on loose at YPT
Young People’s Theatre Newcastle Inc. (YPT) invites you to head back to school these holidays with their adorable production of BUNYIPS, a big, beautiful mess of play. Loosely based on the famous Australian children’s book, Naked Bunyip Dancing by Steven Herrick, this story captures the heart of school-life in Australia and the ups and downs of being in Year 6. The original book has been adapted for stage by Callan Purcell. Callan, originally from Newcastle and former student and tutor of YPT, has had a wonderful career in the arts and is currently performing in the original Australian cast of Hamilton in Sydney. Class 6C are bursting at the seams to express themselves, but they do not know how. Then Mr. Carey came with his yoga, sage and Shakespeare and things were never the same again. Watch these kids rap, dance, speak in bird language and dream their way through Year 6. BUNYIPS plays until 17 July for a total of 16 performances at the YPT Theatre, corner of Lindsay
and Lawson St, Hamilton. The production is 65 minutes in length with a short interval. Fun for the family and suitable for all ages! Great for group bookings and school holiday entertainment. All tickets are $25 and available at ypt.org.au/bookings. Dine and Discover Vouchers are eligible for use on this production. Call 4961 5345 from Monday to Thursday between 10:30 and 3:00 to purchase using your voucher. This production showcases 40 of YPT’s most talented students and some talented adults as well. YPT is pleased to welcome local talent,
Carl Gregory, Claire Thomas, Megan Connelly and Jamahla Barron to the YPT stage. The production is directed by Nicholas Thoroughgood and assisted by Larissa Barwell, Campbell Knox and Mabel Moras – Young. The Local has one double pass to see Bunyips - a big beautiful mess of a play at 2pm on Saturday 17 July. To enter the draw text your name and the word ‘Bunyips’ to 0455 210 000 by Friday 9 July. The Happiest Man On Earth By Eddie Jaku
How does one review what is possibly the greatest story ever told? Firstly, thank you Eddie for sharing your story about what is one of the most devastating and regretful pieces of world history. I don’t think there is anyone in the world who wouldn’t be moved by your courage and determination, your sacrifice and love for your family and friends. You even took in complete strangers and helped them survive. Your attitude towards life and happiness is one that I will remember for the rest of my life. “Here are the lines I try to live by, and which I like to include when I speak publicly: - may you always have lots of love to share, - Lots of good health to spare, - And lots of good friends who care” The Jewish Museum in Sydney is now on my immediate tovisit list, because I want to know more and do more. I want to be like you Eddie. Oh, did I mention Eddie wrote this memoir at 100 years old!!! Review by Natalie Anderson Is there a book you would like to review? THAT WAS THEN This is now
with Lachlan Wetherall
Charles Noble
This month marks 100 years since the death of Charles Noble, whose immense contributions to Lambton colliery and Lambton township spanned more than 50 years. Charles Noble was born in Nailsea near Bristol on 9 June 1856, and arrived in Australia the following year with his parents Mark and Elizabeth. They lived in the Merewether area for a few years before moving to Lambton. Charles was just 10 years old when he first worked at Lambton Colliery for a brief three-week stint. He started at the colliery again in 1868, but on 14 June 1871, having just turned 15, misfortune struck. While uncoupling a set of coal trains on an incline in the mine, his right arm was
crushed between two wagons. The injury was severe and required the amputation of his arm. As painful as it was, the accident, proved to be a positive turning point in Charles’ career. The mine manager Thomas Croudace, “recommended the company to give him a two years’ free schooling and then re-employ him as an apprentice for an under-manager’s position.” Charles attended Lambton Public School and went on to receive the “first prize of the school for good behaviour and general proficiency.” After schooling, he returned to Lambton colliery working at many jobs, eventually becoming underground manager. Above ground Noble served the town in many capacities. He was elected as auditor for the Lambton council sixteen times. At various times he held positions at the Mechanics Institute, Lambton Park Trust, and assisted with local choirs, the Methodist Church, friendly societies and sporting clubs. On Sunday 10 July 1921, aged 65 Charles Noble died very suddenly of heart disease. He was at work just the day before, at Lambton colliery where he had been employed for a record 53 years. Such was the respect he was held in, the colliery ceased work for a day so that employees could attend his funeral. He was survived by his wife Annie, and two daughters, Elizabeth and Mildred. MIND
Matters by Dr Stuart Edser
Principal Psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health
Lambton 150 year anniversary
We’ve been celebrating Lambton’s sesquicentenary. It’s an important milestone. One hundred and fifty years is no small thing. Of course, it pales in comparison to those who lived here before us for thousands of years, the Awabakal people, but for a thriving Newcastle suburb in the twenty first century, one hundred and fifty years is not bad at all. It puts me in mind of the passage of time and makes me think of two ideas.
First, it reminds me of those who have gone before us. We are not accidents, you and I. Lots of different people had to live their lives before we did just so that we could be born. Each of us have or had two parents, two progenitors. And they had to have parents. That’s four grandparents. And each of them had parents, so that’s eight grandparents, sixteen great grandparents, thirty-two great great grandparents, sixty-four great great greats, and one hundred and twenty-eight great great great greats. Of course, all these people didn’t exist at the same time, but they all did exist. They all lived lives with stories of happiness and hardship, work and struggle, laughter and celebrations, marriages, children, lovers, illnesses, and all the other myriad experiences that go into making up human life. We don’t really remember past our great grandparents, most of us. But some of these people lived and loved when Lambton was first kicking off. It’s extraordinary to think of them and remember them. The second idea the passage of time makes me think about is how fast it goes. The time between birthdays as children seemed like an eternity, but after 30, whoosh! Another year, then another year, then another. And it seems to get faster the older I get. Like Lambton itself, let’s make the best of it.

PARENTING
Matters with Mel Burgess of Love Parenting
Sick days
It sounds really formal to have family policies around sick days but a pre-communicated contingency plan puts your whole family on the front foot. A couple of scenarios worth getting really clear on are: What will staying home from school involve? - My recommendation is to keep rest as the absolute focus both for the purpose of expediating their physical/ mental health mend-up, and for the built-in benefit of it not being an attractive option to stay home unless they are actually feeling unwell. What works well is
something along the lines of it being a screen-free day for the unwell person to read and nap and sit outside in a sunny spot sipping on something delightfully restorative that you lovingly hand them between Zoom meetings. How will sick parents etch out space to rest and mend? – Something I would do SO differently if I had my days as a parent of younger kids all over again would be to earmark some funds each year for casual childcare any day that the kids were well enough to go when I was needing to rest and mend. At the time I felt like we didn’t have it to spare, but in hindsight I see the value in us foregoing other things to be able to afford to hand the kids over somewhere they will be taken care of and crawling deliciously back into bed to honour our own health the way we support them to honour theirs (and model to them what staying out of parental burnout looks like). This concept of being pre-prepared is sometimes referred to as ‘frontloading’. Stress
Are you stressed? Stress can manifest itself in the mind and body in many different ways, such as, tension in the back, neck, body or shoulders, difficulty falling asleep, bad memory, anxiety and altered sleeping patterns. If you can relate to experiencing any of these issues, your body may be telling you something needs to change. We experience stress on a few different levels, physical stress, manifested in the body due to overactivity, inactivity, injury etc. Emotional stress, from relationships, work challenges and financial hardships. And finally chemical stress, from what we eat and drink as well as the various different chemicals we are exposed to in our day to day environment. Science
has shown time and time again how stress contributes to various different diseases such as ulcers, diabetes, mental health conditions and even cancer. Stress in small amounts is useful as it can encourage us to get out of trouble or to find a solution to a problem, but when we are exposed to repeated or prolonged stress our bodies become overwhelmed. This can change the way we respond to stressful situations that should not be stressful at all. Our brains can become stuck in a stressed state causing anxiety, tension and fear of the future. While stress is a normal aspect of our lives, it should not be constantly present and there are strategies for us to manage stress such as: making sure your body and nervous system is free from pressure and tension by having your spine adjusted by a registered Chiropractor. Avoiding chemical stimulants such as nicotine, caffeine and alcohol as these all elevate your heart rate and affect your sleep. Exercise regularly and find time to have fun and relax. By improving the function of your spine and nervous system, Chiropractic can help to enhance the health and wellbeing of your whole body, this can in turn reduce the amount of stress on your system. Chiropractors can also suggest other healthy lifestyle practices to help you live a less stressful life. If you would like to know more, don’t hesitate to get your health checked by a registered Chiropractor at Healing Wave Chiropractic New Lambton.
At Healing Wave Chiropractic, we specialise in taking care of you and your spine. We will work with you to seek long term and sustainable solutions for your neck and back concerns, poor posture, headaches and nerve pain.

LAW
Matters by Chris Hill-Smith
Accredited Specialist-Wills & Estates of Appleton Law, Lambton
Who should be the Executor of my will?
In your will you appoint one or more executors whose task it is to obtain a grant of probate of the will and to administer the estate in accordance with the terms of the will. Commonly the executor appointed would be the person whose has the greatest interest in dealing with the estate. If the estate is not complicated and there is a spouse or adult child as sole beneficiary they would be the appropriate choice. The executor, having an interest in the estate will be keen to have the estate administered without undue delay and as is the usual situation, they can seek professional help to facilitate the process.
It should be someone you trust to carry out your wishes and when it is anticipated that more than one executor might be appointed, it is important that they get along and can work together to carry out your wishes. For instance if there are three children and all are proposed to be executors, majority decision making may mean that there is an impasse in making important decisions. Delays, excessive costs and disagreements can result. In more complicated estates the executor may be required to carry out more onerous tasks such as carrying on the operations of a business or acting as a trustee of family trusts. In those situations, consideration should be given to appointing an institutional or professional trustee. When a sole executor is appointed it is wise to appoint a substitute executor to take the place if necessary. Importantly executors carry the burden of significant duties and obligations which they are required by law to comply with. If there is a breach of those duties personal liability can be brought home to them. The position of executor, unless carried out by a profession trustee, is generally a gratuitous position. They do not get paid but in limited circumstances can seek an award of commission from the court. Therefore you should obtain their agreement to act before appointing them.

PHYSIO
Matters with Ben Hutton of Brightside Physio
A back pain story
Nicole* was stuck. Half-way dressed. Stooped over the bathroom sink. Midway through cleaning her teeth her lower back had decided to become a right-angled rusted door hinge. Who would’ve thought that such a simple thing could cause Rapid-Onset-Dodgy-BackAnd-Coccyx-Karma (RODBACK). And pain! Like a hot-tempered vice holding on with high violence. She was in four-letter pain. At 48 years old Nicole had never felt this sort of pain before. “Must’ve broken something…” she said. Three days later as she limped into my treatment room “Probably at least 17 vertebrae out of place…can you fix it doc?”
She had been sitting for longer periods at work recently and yes – she’d been struggling to sleep well since the kids were babies and ok, maybe she hadn’t done any serious exercise for 15 years but still, where did this horrible pain come from? Once I’d been able to rule out more serious back issues and we’d talked about her slow but steady decline in muscle strength, stress from work and the dangers of the extreme sport – cleaning your teeth – Nicole started to get it. The penny dropped and some colour returned to her face. Then, I did some gentle loosening of some of her stiff bits, mobilising the joints causing the problem and some strapping to “sticky tape her together” for stability. Then she felt like moving again and some hope of getting a decent night’s sleep, teenagers permitting. Nicole allowed herself a deep breath and a half smile while she bent down to tie her laces. Back pain can be very nasty, debilitating and confusing but it’s not a death sentence. Like Nicole, you can get better, and you can reduce the risk of it happening again. You just need a physio with some good intel, no fearmongering and a bit of magic back WD40. I’ve got the best job in the world. VET Chat by Dr Fiona Wallace of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic
Pet dentistry
I’ve got to admit, when I was little, it was a known fact that the dog had bad breath. The cat probably did too, but you just weren’t allowed close enough to find out! Come to think of it, our much-loved kelpie was responsible for quite a few obnoxious odours. (What were we feeding her?). And, like many things back in the seventies, I’m a bit horrified now by what was considered acceptable back then. We know now what we should have known then, and that is that bad breath isn’t just awful for the family,
its unpleasant and often painful for the dog as well. Bad breath is a symptom of poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease. Just like in people, the build-up of plaque (and its calcified cousin calculus) harbours the bacteria which cause bad breath. Bacteria and foreign material so close to the gums cause gingivitis. Gums bleed easily, and if this is left unattended the gums will recede over the tooth roots and teeth will become loose and even all out. In advanced cases there is damage to the bone which can lead to jaw fractures and very significant pain. One of the reasons that dentistry was ignored by vets back in the day was that we did not have equipment or knowledge sufficient to tackle the complexities involved in caring for carnivore teeth. Dogs and cats have amazingly strong deep rooted and multi-rooted teeth that require surgical extraction once they become unhealthy. At the clinic we have just completed a seminar on dental health and dental techniques run by a veterinarian who also has a human dentistry degree, and we feel even more confident now of our approach. Don’t wait until you notice bad breath to bring your pet in for a dental examination! We can suggest home tooth care routines, or if necessary we can book your pet in for a scale and polish to avoid loss of teeth and long anaesthetic procedures down the track.

Gout is a common and very painful type of arthritis. It occurs when uric acid crystals form in and around a joint. It mainly affects men over 40 years of age. Gout can usually be well controlled with medicines and changes to diet. Uric acid (urate) is one of the body’s waste products. If uric acid builds up in the bloodstream, it can settle in and around joints as crystals. Uric acid crystals can irritate the joint, causing inflammation (swelling) and pain.
Foods linked to gout Foods high in purines may increase uric acid levels in blood. Some of these foods have been linked to gout attacks. They include: •meat, especially red meat and offal (e.g. liver, kidneys, heart) •seafood, especially shellfish, scallops, sardines, herrings, mackerel, anchovies
