Information

Students in the senior years of school are integral in designing a learning timetable linked to career interest or course prerequisites for further study. Each subject is designed to enhance specific skills and knowledge and should be chosen by students who are interested in the subject content or have some ability in the practical skills linked to particular course work.

Subject Selection Process SCHOOL Year 10 students will attend an information session held in class time to explain the structure of Senior School and the process of choosing senior subjects. They will also have an interview with our Careers advisor to work through interests, abilities, opportuni­ties and career direction.

Following the Creating Pathways Evening, students will proceed through a selection process where they will be asked to select their preferred subjects. Their choices will need to be submitted by early Term 3. From this point subject lines will be drawn up for students to select from. Students will then be asked to select from the subject lines.

Note: this part of the process may take some time and involve ongoing discussion between school and home to ensure all students have equal opportunity to tailor their learning for the coming years in senior school.

HOME This booklet has been emailed to parents and carers and is also available on Canvas in Learning @ HCS allowing parents and carers to have informed discussions with their child/ren about this process.

Students are encouraged to talk to parents and carers about interests and options throughout the selection process.

Subject Choices Overview COURSE STRUCTURE

Most courses offered in Stage 6 are two year courses and are set up with Year 11 topics and then HSC topics. Year 11 topics are precursors to HSC but are not assessed in the HSC examinations.

All courses are worth 2 units except for those stated as a 1 unit subject. Students must complete at least 12 units of NESA approved course content in Year 11 with the option of dropping a course in the HSC year.

Students who wish to receive an ATAR (University entrance) need to make sure their pattern of study qualifies them for an ATAR.

Frequently Asked Questions WHAT ARE CUSTOMISED EDUCATION PACKAGES?

A Customised Education Package is an additional agreement between the School and family suited towards the particular needs of elite athletes, semi-professional artists or performers, or those with similar needs as determined by the Head of Secondary. Packages involve regular planning meetings with families to map alternative pathways for the completion of studies around their external commitments to sporting representation, performance tours and similar.

HOW MANY SUBJECTS DO I CHOOSE? NESA requires that you do subjects worth a minimum of 12 Units for Year 11 and 10 Units for the HSC (starting Term 4 of Year 11).

HSC COURSE REQUIREMENTS 6 Units of Board Developed Courses 2 Units of a Board Developed Course in English, or English Studies 3 Courses of 2 or more units (either Board Developed or Board Endorsed Courses) 4 Subjects

REQUIREMENTS FOR AN ATAR The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank is not a mark.

The ATAR is based on the aggregate of scaled marks in 10 Units of Board Developed Higher School Certificate Courses comprising both units of English and the best eight units from remaining courses. This cannot be made up of 4, 1 Unit subjects.

WHAT ARE UNITS? All courses offered for the HSC have a unit value. Subjects may have a value of 1 unit or 2 units.

1 UNIT COURSES 1 Unit courses equal approximately 2 hours of class time each week or 60 hours per year.

There are several 1 unit Board Endorsed Courses. These do not count in the ATAR. Only Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation Studies (SLR) is offered at Hunter Christian School.

2 UNIT COURSES Most courses have a basic structure of 2 units. Their HSC mark value is 100. Timetable allocation is approximately 4 hours per week.

EXTENSION COURSES Extension study is available in some subjects.

Extension 1 courses build on the content of a 2 unit course and carry an additional value of 1 unit.

Requiring students to work beyond the standard of the 2 unit course, Extension 1 courses in English and Mathematics may be studies across both Preliminary and HSC years.

Extension 1 courses in History, Music, some languages and VET are studied and examined in the HSC year only.

Extension 2 courses in English and Mathematics are available in the HSC year only. Students must study the Preliminary Extension 1 course before proceeding to the HSC Extension 2 course.

The Extension 2 course requires students to work beyond the standard of the Extension 1 course and carries a further extra unit value.

Undergraduate university courses may also be available in some subjects.

WHAT SUBJECTS ARE COMPULSORY? 2 Unit of English and 1 Unit of Studies of Religion.

WHAT SUBJECTS DO I CHOOSE FOR A GOOD ATAR? Choose subjects that you will work hardest and get your best result. This is far more important than any other consideration.

WHAT IF I DON’T WANT AN ATAR? That’s fine. A HSC helps with other types of further study and employment.

WHAT ABOUT TVET AND TAFE? There are lots of courses you can do at school or at TAFE that contribute to your HSC. Many of them can also contribute to your ATAR. For more information or any questions please talk to Paul Monk paul.monk@hunterchristian.nsw.edu.au

COURSE DESCRIPTION Business Studies encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of life. It conceptually offers learning from the planning of a small business to the management of operations, marketing, finance and human resources in large businesses. COURSE DESCRIPTION Economics provides understanding for students about many aspects of the economy and its operation that are frequently reported in the media. It investigates issues such as why unemployment or inflation rates change and how these changes affect individuals in society. Economics develops students’

ENGLISH STANDARD

COURSE DESCRIPTION The English Standard course provides students who have a diverse range of literacy skills, with the opportunity to analyse, study and enjoy a breadth and variety of English texts to become confident and effective communicators. English Standard offers a rich language experience that is reflected through the integrated modes of reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing. Through study of the course modules students continue to develop their skills to analyse, reconsider and refine meaning and to reflect on their own processes of responding, composing and learning.

COURSE DESCRIPTION In the English Advanced course, students continue to explore opportunities to investigate complex ideas in challenging texts, to evaluate, emulate and employ powerful, creative and sophisticated ways to use language to make meaning, and to find enjoyment in literature.

Students refine their understanding of the dynamic relationship between language, texts and meaning. They do this through critical study and through the skilful and creative use of language forms and features, and of structures of texts composed for different purposes in a range of contexts. INVESTIGATING SCIENCE

COURSE DESCRIPTION Investigating Science is designed to assist students of all abilities engage with scientific processes, and apply those processes to investigate relevant personal, community and global scientific issues. The course draws on and promotes interdisciplinary science, by allowing students to investigate a wide range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related issues and concepts in depth. Investigating Science encourages the development of a range of capabilities and capacities that enhance a student’s ability to participate in all aspects of community life within a fast-changing technological landscape.

LEGAL STUDIES

COURSE DESCRIPTION Our society is regulated by a complex set of rules and regulations which both guide and protect individual and community rights. Being well informed about legal issues, including the rights and responsibilities integral to our society, is part of being an active and informed citizen.

Students of Legal Studies Stage 6 will develop an understanding of legal concepts and the way the law functions in our society.

The syllabus focuses on the way in which law is generated, how it is structured and how it operates in Australian and international contexts. Learning about our legal system will allow students to investigate the way our society operates and the influences that shape it.

COURSE DESCRIPTION The study of Mathematics Standard in Stage 6 enables students to develop their knowledge and understanding of what it means to work mathematically, improve their skills to solve problems relating to their present and future needs and aspirations, and improve their understanding of how to communicate in a concise and systematic manner.

CAREER PATHWAYS Mathematics - Standard provides a foundational knowledge and skills for postschool options of employment in areas such as retail and banking.

MATHEMATICS - ADVANCED

COURSE DESCRIPTION The Mathematics course is intended to give students an understanding of and competence in some further aspects of mathematics which are applicable to the real world. The course has general educational merit and is also useful for concurrent studies in science and commerce.

It is a sufficient basis for further studies in mathematics as a minor discipline at tertiary level in support of courses such as the life sciences or commerce. Students who require substantial mathematics at a tertiary level supporting the physical sciences, computer science or engineering should undertake the Extension 1 or 2 courses.

Note: students must have studied Mathematics at the 5.3 level in Year 10 to attempt this course.

MATHEMATICS EXTENSION 1

COURSE DESCRIPTION The Extension 1 course is intended to give students a thorough understanding of, and competence in, aspects of mathematics including many which are applicable to the real world. The course has general educational merit and is also useful for concurrent studies of science, industrial arts and commerce. It is a recommended minimum basis for further studies in mathematics as a major discipline at a tertiary level, and for the study of mathematics in support of the physical and engineering sciences.

Note: students need to have achieved either an ‘A’ or high ‘B’ grade at the 5.3 level in Year 10 Mathematics to attempt this course.

MATHEMATICS EXTENSION 2

COURSE DESCRIPTION The Extension 2 course is designed for students with a special interest in Mathematics who have shown that they possess special aptitude for the subject. It represents a distinctly high level in school mathematics involving the development of considerable manipulative skill and a high degree of understanding of the fundamental ideas of algebra and calculus. Thus the course provides a sufficient basis for a wide range of useful applications of mathematics as well as an adequate foundation for the further study of the subject.

Note: This is only a Year 12 course and Extension 1 is a prerequisite.

CAREER PATHWAYS Mathematics Extension 2 is foundational for tertiary courses in mathematics, engineering, aviation and physical science.

MODERN HISTORY

COURSE DESCRIPTION Students explore the nature of history, heritage and archaeology and the methods that historians use to construct history through a range of thematic and historical studies. The construction of history is examined through options such as oral history, museum or archive studies, historical fiction, media,

biography or film. Historical issues studied include the collection, display and reconstruction of the past, ethical issues of ownership, preservation and conservation of the past. Features of a range of ancient, medieval and modern societies are explored and students have the opportunity to study historical

themes such as war and peace, crime and punishment, music through history, slavery and gender in history.

CAREER PATHWAYS The study of Modern History can be a valuable background to careers in economics, journalism, forensic science, art history, tourism, trade & foreign affairs, political science and industrial relations.

COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will be encouraged in their love and passion for health and sport. They will develop an understanding of the importance of health issues surrounding us and how to keep healthy.

They will look at how the body adapts to training principles and how to improve sporting performance. They will look at different coaching styles and the impact they have on athletes.

They will discuss hot topics like drugs in sport and changes in technology as well as developing skills in sports medicine, coaching and training.

COURSE DESCRIPTION Society and Culture develops social and cultural literacy and a clear understanding of the interactions of persons, society, culture, environment and time, and how these shape human behaviour. The course draws on cross-disciplinary concepts and social research methods, and students undertake research in an area of particular interest to them. The research findings are presented for external assessment in the Personal Interest Project (PIP).

VISUAL ARTS

COURSE DESCRIPTION Fostering interest and enjoyment in the doing, production and consumption of art is the main aim of this course. This subject seeks to build informed citizens and discerning audiences for art and to raise the standard of cultural awareness in Australia. Visual Arts acknowledges the need to respect cultural diversity within Australia and in other regions and cultures. In contemporary societies many types of knowledge are increasingly managed through imagery and spectacle and much of students’ knowledge is acquired in this way. Visual Arts builds understanding of the role of art, in all forms of media, in contemporary and historical cultures and visual worlds.
