Information

Students in Year 9 and 10 (Stage 5) are given the opportunity to tailor their learning and explore subjects linked to interests and career options. Each subject is designed to enhance specific skills and knowledge and should be chosen by students who are interested in the subject content or have some ability in the practical skills linked to particular courses.

Subject Selection Process SCHOOL

Year 8 and 9 students will attend an information session held in class time to explain the process and structure of electives.

Following the Subject Information Night, students will proceed through a selection process where they will be asked to select their preferred subjects. Their choices will need to be submitted by Early Term 3.

From this point subject lines will be drawn up for students to select from. Students will then be asked to select from the subject lines. Note: this part of the process may take some time and involve ongoing discussion between school and home to ensure all students have equal opportunity to tailor their learning for next year.

HOME This booklet has been emailed to parents and carers and is also available on Canvas in Learning @ HCS allowing parents and carers to have informed discussions with their child/ren about this process.

Students are encouraged to talk to their parents and carers about interests, strength areas and future career ideas throughout the selection process period.

Parents and carers are invited to attend a subject information night with their child/ren, detailed information is provided at this time.

Subject Choices COURSE STRUCTURE

Most courses offered have the option of being completed over one or two years.

If a student selects the same course in Year 9 and Year 10 some content may be repeated or addressed using different examples or skills.

Some courses only run for 12 months, however can be completed by either Year 9 or Year 10 students.

Students are able to select 4 electives to complete per year. If a student has a particular interest then they are able to select more than one elective that covers similar content within each calender year - for example: Music and Performance Band.

COMPULSORY SUBJECTS: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, PDHPE, Invictus: which incorporates Christian Studies.

Frequently Asked Questions WHAT ARE CUSTOMISED EDUCATION PACKAGES?

A Customised Education Package is an additional agreement between the School and family suited towards the particular needs of elite athletes, semi-professional artists or performers, or those with similar needs as determined by the Head of Secondary. Packages involve regular planning meetings with families to map alternative pathways for the completion of studies around their external commitments to sporting representation, performance tours and similar.

HOW MANY SUBJECTS DO I CHOOSE? You need to choose 4 subjects for next year (but we will ask you for your top 6 choices in case one of your first choices doesn’t run). All other subjects are compulsory as per the requirements of the New South Wales Education Standards Authority.

WHAT SUBJECTS DO I CHOOSE? The ones you will enjoy or are interested in and therefore will work hardest at. Experiencing a variety of subjects is the best idea at this stage.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT HAPPENS IN A PARTICULAR SUBJECT This book provides further information on each subject. It’s also recommend that you talk to the teacher who teaches the subject this year.

WHAT ARE LINES? An elective or subject line is a group of subjects that are taught at the same time.

Students in both Year 9 and Year 10 choose four ‘additional’ subjects from four elective lines.

The lines are formulated following the submission of first round elective choices by students currently in both Year 8 and Year 9.

WHY VET? Studying a Vocational Education and Training (VET) Course in Year 10 enables students a head start to studying for the HSC which in turn reduces the load in the HSC year.

VET courses enable students to gain industry skills and experience while studying for the HSC. Students receive accreditation from NESA and AQF Nationally recognised qualifications.

ASSESSMENTS Each Stage 5 course will have 4-6 Compulsory Assessments that all students have to complete. Assessment schedules will be available once the classes commence.

ACTING AND DRAMA COURSE DESCRIPTION Drama is a combination of the intellect, the physical, the imagination and the spirit.

Its expression in theatre gives us the unique opportunity to examine ourselves in all areas of life both as participant and spectator.

ARTMAKING COURSE DESCRIPTION In Artmaking students explore and develop skills related to the creation of artistic work in different media e.g. ceramics, photography, drawing and printmaking. During the year students have the opportunity to produce functional objects in ceramics, photographs that involves digital manipulation; draw with experimental methods, and dabble in making advertising materials.

BEACH SPORTS COURSE DESCRIPTION Central to this course is the development of an understanding of the beach environment and the skills needed to be safe. Students will be taught surf survival skills both on the sand and in the water. They will work towards developing an understanding of the beach environment through the study of weather patterns, beach conditions and wave formation. Students will engage in practical beach sport activities including beach volleyball, touch football and surfing.

BEST BITS OF HISTORY COURSE DESCRIPTION Students can explore aspects of the nature of history, heritage and archaeology and the methods that historians use to construct history through a range of thematic and historical studies. The construction of history is examined through options such as oral history, museum or archive studies, historical fiction, media, biography or film. Historical issues studied include the collection, display and reconstruction of the past, ethical issues of ownership, preservation and conservation of the past. Features of a range of ancient, medieval and modern societies are explored and students have the opportunity to study historical themes such as war and peace, crime and punishment, music through history, slavery and gender in history.

CONTENT This is in addition to the Compulsory history studied in Year 9 and 10.

The Course is structured to broadly follow the Stage 5 elective history course set by NESA, but allows students to regularly branch out into areas of personal interest.

COMMUNITY AND FAMILY STUDIES COURSE DESCRIPTION Community and Family Studies (CAFS) is designed to combine content linked to family as well as community groups. Students learn to identify, create and evaluate solutions to enhance

COMMERCE COURSE DESCRIPTION Central to this course is the development of an understanding of the relationships between consumers, businesses and governments in the overall economy. Through their investigation of these relationships, students develop the capacity to apply problem-solving strategies which incorporate the skills of analysis and evaluation. CODING AND ROBOTICS COURSE DESCRIPTION The game design component of this course provides students will a look at a range of software for designing computers game. Students will consider what makes a good computer game as they create their own with the option of using code exclusively or a more intuitive drop and drag interface. This option will also look at the option to push their game out into a phone or tablet app.

The robotics part of this course will offer students the chance to compete in competitions where they will be challenged to test their coding and problem-solving ability.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP COURSE DESCRIPTION The Australian workforce is changing! Increasingly we are seeing young people involved in running their own businesses or helping to manage and renew existing businesses. In order to be ‘work-ready’ it is important to be able to think creatively and develop ideas that are profitable and change lives. This course will deliver a program called the Youth Entrepreneurship Academy Program. This program will be delivered in our school but is the work of a not-for-profit organisation that aims to help young people set goals, think through their personal values and learn practical tools for innovative business design.

GYM AND FITNESS COURSE DESCRIPTION Hunter Christian School has an industry-standard gym that provides students with opportunities to explore their athletic potential and learn how to use a wide variety of equipment in the safety of a school setting. Students will learn how to design training programs for a range of sports. This type of training can lead to significant sports performance benefits along with the strengthening of supporting muscles, evening out muscle imbalances, increase mobility, correcting posture, stabilize joints and more.

INFORMATION, SOFTWARE AND TECHNOLOGY COURSE DESCRIPTION The computing field, particularly in the area of software design and development, offers opportunities for creativity and problem-solving and a collaborative work environment where working with people and exploring issues is an integral part of the job. JOURNALISM AND DIGITAL COMMUNICATION COURSE DESCRIPTION Journalists gather news and prepare articles and reports for newspapers, radio and television stations, wire services and magazines. They identify and track sources of information, and they conduct interviews by phone, in person or by e-mail.

Digital producers create, manage and update multimedia content for websites, social media, mobile applications, interactive media and other digital products.

This course will deliver explicit teaching in the areas of Journalism and Digital Production.

Learning experiences will involve the transfer of this knowledge for real world applications.

Students will attend school events as Location Reporters and Photographers, contribute to school social media presence and create a school Yearbook to be sold at the end of the year.

LANGUAGE AND CULTURE COURSE DESCRIPTION Language and Culture inspires and encourages students to not just learn another language but to understand the culture underpinning it. For example, students could merely learn conversational Japanese but when students learn about why food is eaten in a certain way, or that Shinto is an undercurrent of most Anime films, there is a much greater appreciation of the connection between language and culture. Students will engage with audio, visual techniques in their language-learning, as well as hands-on activities, learning to converse with others as well as practice cultural customs.

MOUNTAIN BIKING COURSE DESCRIPTION The mountain bike elective provides students with the opportunity to ride a variety of local trails and develop their skills while at school. This course is run by a UCI Level 2 mountain bike coach who will coach students as they learn beginner skills before transitioning to trails specific features. Once students have developed their skills they will be involved with the planning of various mountain bike excursions.

MUSIC COURSE DESCRIPTION This course builds sequentially from the mandatory course in Year 7/8 and is designed for students in Years 9 /10 who wish to extend their musical experiences and learning. The knowledge, understanding and skills gained in the course provide a firm foundation for the study of Music in Stage 6. Students will develop in their musicianship and understanding of musical concepts. Students will have opportunities to learn new instruments as well as developing their current musical ability. They will be given opportunities to play at various events which will develop their ability to perform to a higher level.

PERFORMANCE BAND COURSE DESCRIPTION Students’ studying this elective course will have the opportunity to develop their performance and stage skills in a safe and encouraging environment. Throughout the year, students will rehearse and perform both individually and as part of various ensembles (groups). The elective course builds sequentially from the mandatory course in Year 7/8 and is designed for students in Years 9/ 10 who wish to extend their performance skills. The knowledge, understanding and skills gained in the course provide a firm foundation for the practical component of Music in Stage 6. Students will have the opportunity to perform both for their peers in the classroom and beyond at events for our wider school community.

RECREATIONAL SPORTS COURSE DESCRIPTION Recreational sports is designed to develop an appreciation for all forms of activity. It includes traditional sports, individual sports and group activities designed to develop fitness and coordination. A further purpose of the course is to provide sporting experiences and fitness opportunities that are not usually provided in core Personal Development, Health and Physical education (PDHPE).

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATHEMATICS COURSE DESCRIPTION Australia needs future generations who understand the holistic nature of design and technology, can apply design processes, develop, communicate and justify solutions, create systems and use technologies to meet identified needs and opportunities. Student projects within this course relate to real-life contexts, provide a rich setting for individuals and groups to develop holistic solutions and to discover underlying principles for quality design applications.

Students will investigate processes of design and technology in a responsible, safe, ethical and collaborative manner and in a range of design fields.

VISUAL ARTS COURSE DESCRIPTION Visual Arts has a significant role within the curriculum through providing learning opportunities designed to encourage students to understand the visual arts, including the different kinds of creative works they, and others make. Visual Arts places great value on the development of students’ intellectual and practical autonomy, reflective action, critical judgment and understanding of art in art making and in critical and historical studies of art. It offers a wide range of opportunities for students to develop their own interests, to be self motivated and active learners who can take responsibility for and continue their own learning in school and post-school settings.

VOLLEYBALL COURSE DESCRIPTION Hunter Christian School has had a rich history of success with Volleyball over the years. With many state mixed titles at CSSA level as well as top level success at the All Schools NSW State Cup. Recently there has been a strong resurgence in the popularity of Volleyball at Hunter Christian and we are looking at ways to further develop the sport. Volleyball will provide students with both theory and practical opportunities to develop their skill and understanding of the game.
