The satellite City of Mumbai,Vasai-Virar, is urbanized to help decongest the population of Mumbai.However,during the process of urbanization,no due considerations were given to Vasai’s existing ecology.As the urbanizable area continue to expand,it endangers the ecology of the region and threatens the existence of the indigenous communities dependant on the ecology for their sustenance. The indigenous communities living along the coastal belt have over the years developed sustainable approaches to carry out their traditional occupations which help in conserving the ecosystem.
Understanding the nexus between urbanization and indigenous communities in the Vasai-Virar subregion and discussing their different roles in destroying and preserving Vasai’s coastal ecosystem is the main goal of the thesis. It also aims to understand the symbiotic relationship between the traditional occupations of the indigenous communities and the ecology of the region and come up with the strategies that could help in conserving the symbiotic relationship.

As Vasai-Virar region lacks research facility to carry out research & Study on Agriculture and Mangrove Biodiversity related topics
Interpretation Centre:
To educate Villagers & Urbanites about the importance of Mangrove & Marine biodiversity.
Community Resource Centre:
A space where villagers can produce traditional crafts and food and sell to earn secondary income and also which acts as a gathering space for the villagers during festivities.
Boat Workshop
A space where urbanites can learn and take part in local boat making art
Mangrove Trail:
A boardwalk to educate the visitors about the mangrove and to give them live experience of life under mangroves.
Urban Inserts: Pathway development,sittings and signges at various spots,shades and viewing decks etc will all be designed along the entire trail.
Concept & Form Evolution
Linearly oriented along the direction of existing water flow and perpendicular to the primary winds coming to the site reducing its intensity.
The Central Entry and Central Public Space bifurcates the tourist and professional areas efficiently and acts as the spine of the entire structure.
The roof imagined as a social space with 360 degree view of the surrounding natural context.The mounds mimic the Hillocks visible in the distant view.The main aim is to impart an experience of walking in midst of natural hillocks.
Structure merges with the surrounding landscape with the help of green roofs extented till ground.
Furthermore,the structure becomes the starting point of the much longer trail ahead.The change in levels and volume of the structure adds in enhancing the overall experience of the visitor.
