KOREAN FINGER HEART? Written by Marketing Intern, Rachael Aro Choe (Hoseo University)

The Finger Heart is literally making a heart shape with your ngers. The thumb and index nger overlap to form a heart shape with the nger. Prior to using nger hearts, Koreans also used the universal method of making a heart with two arms or two hands, but lately, almost everyone does hearts instead. nger hea If you are interested in Korean celebrities, you may already know about this gesture. When it rst began, only K-pop Idol stars used nger hearts to express their love to their fans on stage. Famous actors and actresses who visit Korea often use this gesture during their premiere. In recent example, the main actors of the movie "Black Panther", Lupita Nyong'o and Chadwick Boseman, who came to Korea to promote the lm, expressed their hearts with the gesture to Korean Marvel Fans.

The Finger heart was also used during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics by many athletes. Have you ever seen the oďŹƒcial Pyeongchang Olympic glove? That glove is perfect for making nger hearts because it is a navy color glove but the thumb and index nger are red. If you wear the glove and make a re nger heart, you can make a small and cute red heart. The glove was one of the most popular items in the Olympic souvenir store. The SpringFest logo this year incorporates the popular Korean Finger Heart to show love to our host nation and community. Come out this year on May 19 to celebrate Korean-American friendship and cross-cultural understanding.

DAMYANG BAMBOO FESTIVAL The 2018 Damyang Bamboo Festival will kick off May 2 and run to May 7 at Jungnogwon-ro, Damyang-eup, Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do. Damyang is famous for its bamboo crafts such as fans, baskets and pillows, but it is not used only to make crafts. In the old days, Koreans used the cooling properties of bamboo to make summer clothes or to use as construction materials. Bamboo was very important to the villagers as a part of their daily life.

Festival Origin

The origin of this festival begins in the Goryeo period. Starting from the Goryeo Dynasty, Damyang has planted bamboo trees in its towns and mountains on the 13th of May on the lunar calendar every year. The purpose of

50 | HUMPHREYS.ARMYMWR.COM

this was to develop a harmonious and united community within the villages, but this was interrupted during the Japanese occupation period. After the liberation of Korea, the bamboo festival began in 1999 to revive the meaning of bamboo planting day again.

The Main Programs

The festival offers a variety of activities to experience the bamboo forests. If you take part in a bamboo forest walking competition at Jungnogwon Garden, you can experience the fresh air blowing between the bamboo trees. At the river, you can catch fish with a bamboo basket that you made or ride a bamboo canoe. You can also make a variety of crafts such as a bamboo bowl and vase.

JINDO MIRACLE SEA ROAD FESTIVAL The 40th Jindo Miracle Sea Road Festival will kick off May 16 and run to May 19 at Heodong-ri, Gogun-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do. Jindo is a mysterious place where you can see the sea parting. It is said to be one of the world’s largest sea partings that still happen today. The miracle road, which is 40 meters in width and 3 kilometers long, is exposed for about an hour due to the sea tides. The French ambassador to Korea, who witnessed this sight in 1975, introduced it to the French newspapers as the “The Miracle of Moses in South Korea”, making it known worldwide.

Festival Origin

In the old days, there were many tigers in Jindo. The village suffered great damage because of them, so all the villagers ran away to the island across the sea. However, an elderly woman named Grandma Ppong could not escape, so she was left alone in the village. She missed her family and prayed to the King of the Sea

every day to see her family. Then suddenly, one day, the sea divided and a road opened in the middle of the sea. Grandma Ppong crossed the sea and met her family again, but passed away when she got to the other side. She told her family with her last breath “I can die without regret.” This folk tale is the origin for the festival these days.

The Main Programs

The main event is “Walking the Miracle Sea Road”. People go to the beach and wait for the sea road to be opened so they can walk across. It will definitely be a very special and mysterious experience for you. The sea road is only open an hour a day, so you must check the time before you go. Besides the main event, there are many other events at the sea in front of Heo-dong village. For example, a parade of dozens of fishing boats with colorful flags, gathering sea shells and performance of intangible cultural asset.
