Monthly Maintenance Tip: Disconnecting and reconnecting your battery If you’re going to do any work on your car involving the electrical system, disconnect the battery first. To do this loosen the connector for the negative/ground terminal and wiggle the terminal cap off. Use a wire-tie or something similar to tie the cable back out of the way. If you need to take the battery out, you can now take off the positive connector.

Check your battery terminals Most modern cars run on a 12 volt negative ground electrical system. If your battery terminals or contacts aren’t clean, you’re making it more difficult for the current to pass around the electrical system. Remove the terminal caps and clean each contact post with a wire brush to get a nice clean metal contact surface.

YOUR VOICE COUNTS WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR FAMILY AND MORALE, WELFARE AND RECREATION PROGRAMS.

Have you ever walked around base and had a thing or two to say about the auto skills, pool or tness centers but didn didn’t know where to voice your concerns? Or wondered if it even mattered? Well, not only does your feedback matter, it’s critical to the success of MWR’s services and programs for our Service members and their families. We use patron feedback to grow and adapt our programs and funding distribution. The survey measures the impact of MWR satisfaction on three desired outcomes – readiness, retention and unit cohesion – across nine MWR pr programs: tness, library, outdoor recreation, recreation centers, community center, auto service center, single Service member programs, leisure travel and business operations. Complete the survey today by visiting:

The survey will take less than 30 minutes and will be available until July 31.

LIVING LIKE A “HANKOOK SARAM” by: Jenny Ho (Family and MWR Marketing Intern)

Living somewhere new means making new relationship with other people and learning the local culture. Adapting to a new location depends on how much information you get and learning new things. This series will teach you new things about Korea and help you live like a “Hankook Saram” (Korean person).

Shopping in Korea Everyone needs groceries for home-cooked meals and a change of clothes with the changing of the seasons. However, you may not know where to get the cheapest and best quality. In Korea, there are many types of markets and you might be confused about what each market offers. This article will help you be a smarter shopper in Korea.

Traditional Markets Traditional markets have been around for a long time, but the rise of major commercial markets like Emart and Lotte Mart have changed the traditional market system. For example, use of gift cards became prevalent and parking lots were expanded. Its major strengths are cheap prices and ability to bargain with the vendors. If you want to buy Korean traditional products, you can stop by any traditional market. There are plenty of specialties such as fish, agricultural and livestock.

BEYOND THE BASE

52

Supermarkets & Marts

Department Stores

When you need something in a hurry, you will find local supermarkets have almost everything that you want. They have sales often so you might be lucky and grab what you need at a good price. They also sell in big volumes. Like Target, Trader Joe’s and Walmart in the U.S., they are popular for their many locations throughout Korea. I recommend the PB (Private Brand) in Emart due to its low cost. The closest market from Camp Humphreys is Nonghyub Hanaro Mart, located in the Paradia building. use of gift cards became prevalent and parking lots were expanded. Its major strengths are cheap prices and ability to bargain with the vendors. If you want to buy Korean traditional products, you can stop by any traditional market. There are plenty of specialties such as fish, agricultural and livestock.

Department stores in Korea are often a landmark in itself. An example is the AK Plaza in Pyeongtaek, which is also the main train/subway station in the area. They have an image of luxury that provides high-class service and expensive brands compared to supermarkets or marts. These days, department stores are also known for having culture and recreation centers. Usually if you go to the rooftop of Korean department stores, they will have a roof garden and nice rest areas. Department stores offer more than shopping to their visitors.

Drug Stores Unlike CVS or Walgreens in the U.S., Korean drug stores and pharmacies are two different types of stores. While pharmacies are strictly for health and medicine, drug stores in Korea are popular because of the cosmetic and personal hygiene products they offer. The only medicine you will find in a Korean drug store are simple medicines like nutritional and dietary supplements. Some popular drug stores in Korea are Oliveyoung, Watsons and LOHB’s.

Recommendations Hanam Starfield 750 Misa-daero, Hanam-si, Gyeonggi-do Hanam Starfield is a shopping complex in Hanam City, Gyeonggi Province that opened on September 9th of 2016 and is the second largest shopping mall in Korea. Its nickname is the “Shopping Theme Park” due to the many different types of stores inside. There is a Shinsegae department store and Emart Traders, along with Electro Mart, Maison Ticia, Toy Kingdom, Hyundai Motorstudio and even Aquafield to play and relax in the water. IFC Mall is the first international style mall where you can shop for international brands such as Hollister and the best Korean domestic fashion brands. It features unique design elements from all other existing Korean malls. It is also famous for its natural lighting via the 17-meter high glass ceiling. The American brands are more expensive here than the U.S. but if you would like to compare U.S. style with Korean style, it is an appropriate location.

COEX Mall 513 Yeongdong-daero, Samseong 1(il)-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul COEX (Convention centers and Exhibition halls) Mall is the world’s largest underground shopping mall. It is a cultural, shopping and entertainment complex containing Megabox (Movie Theater) and an Aquarium. Several years ago, COEX went through renovation to change the ambiance to not to feel as underground. 53

Fishing is for Everyone When You Live in South Korea

H

ow long has it been since you’ve held a rod and reel in your hand and felt the tug of a bite? When was the last time you sat at the river’s edge and let all of your responsibilities melt away and enjoyed the outdoors? Fishing is a hobby that gives excitement and calm all in one neatly wrapped package but many leave their favorite hobby behind when moving to a foreign country. South Korea is a haven for every fisherman and there are few reasons for enthusiasts to put their favorite past time on hold because of a PCS. There are so many ways to get out there and fish in this lovely country that even amateurs and families can enjoy an afternoon of angling.

BEYOND THE BASE

54

By: Siegrid Pregartner South Korea is possibly one of the most uncomplicated countries to go fishing in. There are no fishing permits, there are few limitations on where one can fish and tackle and bait shops are everywhere. Here in Humphreys, outdoor rec rents poles and there is a large bait shop to the east of Humphreys on the backroad to Osan. After hitting up the bait shop, head back and follow the Anseong stream for parking areas and fishing spots, just a 5 minute drive from the main gate. Every type of fishing is available here in the Land of the Morning Calm. Since this is a peninsula, Sea Fishing is very popular and every angler gets in a boat with hopes of getting a prized tuna. New anglers to Korea should research to discover which species are available during what times of year, where to charter a boat and to take all safety precautions while out at sea. South Korea requires all boat operators to have a license for driving and towing so have the correct documentation before making plans.

I enjoy the idea of fishing but packing a car full of tackle and screaming kids does not make an enjoyable weekend. Don’t worry; South Korea has you covered with their affordable and easy fishing cafes. These cafes are found in every major city and Pyeongtaek has at least four of them. They are great for kids, families, visitors or for a fun evening out on the town. For first timers, Fishing Cafes in the basement of an office building look very intimidating but nothing could be simpler. Go to the front desk to pay the hourly fee per person, an average of 7,000- 10,000won per fisherman based upon age, and each participant receives an electronic wristband to track their catches, a rod, a bowl of food and a comfy chair to sit back and relax in. While fishing and enjoying snacks and drinks, look up at the electronic scoreboard and see if there is an event running. Fishing Cafes turn fishing into a game by rewarding points for caught fish and rewarding extra points to winners of hour long events for biggest fish, smallest fish or fish closest to a certain weight in grams. Friendly staff will help participants decide if they should submit their fish for an event or for points to be turned in later for a prize from the prize wall. When it’s time to leave, put those receipts away in a safe place; names and point totals don’t expire for the next time. Fishermen coming to Korea should not look at their move with trepidation. Humphreys has sea fishing, fly fishing and game fishing all within a few hours’ drive. Do a little research before heading out on your first fishing trip, hire a guide or join a chartered trip to learn the ins and outs of fishing in Korea. A full weekend trip isn’t for everyone and sometimes enjoying an hour of fishing in a café after watching a movie at AK Plaza is a great finish to yet another wonderful day in Korea. Explore Korea and Go Fish.

BEYOND THE BASE

National parks preserve the beauty of Korea’s mountain streams and lakes, ensuring scenic fishing holes throughout the country. Fly fishers and game fishers flock to the mountains to catch largemouth bass, trout and bluegills. Watching a local catch a trout with a bamboo rod is a cultural opportunity that everyone should experience, fisherman or not. Did you know Largemouth Bass are not native to Korea and are an invasive species found in almost every river and stream on the peninsula? Interestingly, I haven’t heard any game fishermen complaining. Take this opportunity to get a trophy bass while removing an invasive species from the ecosystem.
