HUMPHREYS HAPPENINGS - DECEMBER 2018

A MILITARY FAMILY’S GUIDE TO SCHOOL TRANSITIONS ORGANIZE SCHOOL RECORDS

Have at least an unofficial copy of your child’s school records as well as report cards.

COMPILE SCHOOL CONTACT INFORMATION

For older students, especially high school students, compile contact information for teachers and coaches at the previous school who might be future references for your child.

FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Each curriculum has its own focus, style, and methodology, so becoming familiar with the curriculum that your child has been involved with can prove helpful.

ACCELERATED WITHDRAWAL

A request must be made prior to the student's last day of school. The request must be accompanied by PCS (Permanent Change of Station) orders and the principal must approve the request before the student can begin the acceleration. This will allow the student time to get with his or her teachers to determine what work will need to be completed to allow for credit to be granted. Please keep the following in mind as you consider Accelerated Withdrawal: > Acceleration is only for PCS purposes; it is

not to be used for the purpose of extending summer vacation. > The fewer school days a PCSing student

misses, the easier the transition will be. > Official PCS orders are required at the time

the application is submitted. > The earliest date students can accelerate

their withdrawal is 20 academic days before the school year or semester ends. > Students must attend all day long on the

first day of Accelerated Withdrawal. > The school records will be ready on the last

day after 2:30 p.m. For more information about accelerating, please contact your school’s guidance counselor.

KNOW YOUR CHILD’S INTEREST

Have a list of your child’s extracurricular activities and interest, including sports and levels of participation, volunteer commitments and hobbies.

CONNECT WITH SCHOOL LIAISONS

School Liaisons at military installations serve as a clearinghouse for information about the schools on and near bases and the services and programs offered in them.

GET TO KNOW YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD

Follow local school board members in the region where you are moving. Use local newspapers and district websites to become aware of their objectives, student outcomes and performance goals prior to your arrival.

MEET WITH A SCHOOL’S SPECIAL NEEDS DIRECTOR

If you have a child with an active IEP, consider communicating with the district’s Special Education Director to identify where services that your child may use are provided.

MONTHLY TRIPS

Where have you been in Korea?

Written by Marketing Intern, Jooyeon “Jenny” Park (Hoseo University)

How much do you know about the land of Korea? South Korea is historically divided into five regions: Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Jeolla, Gyeongsang and Gangwon. During my internship, this series will highlight places to visit and unique activities available in each region.

Kim KimGwang-seok Gwang-seokStreet Street Busan Gwang Daegyo

THE GYEONGSANG REGION Gyeongsang Region, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is a place where you can experience unique dialects and accents. Unlike the other regional dialects, it is easy to catch the strong Gyeongsang accent even to new listeners. The Gyeongsang Region is divided into two provinces: Gyeongsangbuk-do (North) and Gyeongsangnam-do (South).

Gyeonsang buk-do (North) – Daegu KIM GWANG-SEOK STREET, DAEPONG-DONG Daepong-dong is the birthplace of legendary Korean singer-songwriter Kim Gwang-seok, and the street was constructed along the Sincheon River where he was born. A popular and influential folk rock singer, his music reflected the Korean society‘s struggle during the rapid industrialization and political atmosphere in the 1980s. There are various murals and works about Kim’s life and songs. SEOMUN MARKET Known for its textiles, Seomun Market is also a great place where you can enjoy all types of food at reasonable prices. Seomun Market is the largest traditional market in Daegu and is one of the country’s oldest markets. It contains more than 4,000 shops, so you can go there and enjoy what Seomun Market has to offer, day or night. E-WORLD AMUSEMENT PARK A popular Daegu destination, E-world holds various festivals throughout the year, and during

Seomun Market December, the Starlight Festival is the main event. With 10 million sparkling lights, it’s like walking among a field of stars. Whether you go with family, alone or with a special someone, you can always experience something magical during the Starlight Festival. WELL-KNOWN DAEGU FOODS > Yaki Udong - 야끼우동 (Thick Wheat Flour Noodles Stir-fry) > Nab Jak Mandu - 납작만두 (Flat Fried Dumpling) > Dwae-ji Gook Bap – 돼지국밥 (Pork and Rice Soup)

Gyeonsang nam-do (South)- Busan GAMCHEON CULTURE VILLAGE Once a haven to war refugees in the 1950s, Gamcheon Culture Village is made of colorful houses built on the side of a steep mountain slope. The streets are alive with colors from various murals that are painted by the local artists and residents. A popular photo location is at the Little Prince Statue, where you can take in the fantastic view of the village.

BUSAN GWANGAN DAEGYO AKA DIAMOND BRIDGE As famous as the summer sea, the winter night view of Gwangan Bridge is breathtaking as it lights up the Busan Sea. The second longest bridge in Korea, it is surrounded by lit-up sculptures on the nearby Gwanganri Beach that, at night, fill the area with beautiful lights.

JAGALCHI MARKET If you have to choose only one of the many markets in Busan to visit, it is Jagalchi market. As the first place where fishing boats arrive from the distant seas, Jagalchi Market is the best place to get the freshest seafood at the lowest prices. Located at the edge of Nampo Port, it is Korea’s largest seafood markets.

WELL-KNOWN BUSAN FOODS > Nak Gop Sae (Nakji, Gop Chang, Sae-oo) - 낙곱새 (낙지 곱창 새우) (Octopus, Intestine, Shrimp Stew) > Shi-at Ho Ddeok - 씨앗 호떡 (Seed Rice Hot Cake) > Bang-eo Hwei - 방어 회 (Yellow Tail Sashimi)

Now that you know a little more about the Gyeonsang Region, it’s time to plan a trip! Are you curious to know which region we will visit next? Here’s a hint: It is famous for its “Snow.”
