BUSAN SEA FESTIVAL The 2018 Busan Sea Festival will kick off August 1 and run to August 5 at 219, Gwanganhaebyeon-ro, Suyeong-gu, Busan. Busan is one of the most popular tourist cities in Korea and is famous not only for its beaches, but also for its food and tourist attractions. During the summer months, people flock to this vacation spot, so the Busan City Government started the annual Sea Festival, which offers a variety of seathemed programs at the five beaches of Busan.
The Main Programs
The event has programs throughout Busan at their five beaches: Haeundae, Gwangalli, Dadaepo, Songdo and Songjeong. The festival starts with the opening ceremony at Haeundae Beach at 7 p.m. on the first day of the festival where you can watch a
52
spectacular fireworks display at 10 p.m. The next day on August 2, there will be a Water Carnival Event at the same beach at 1 p.m. to enjoy a dance performance utilizing large water facilities such as pools and large water fountains. Starting at 7 p.m., visitors can participate in the Night Pool Party, where they can enjoy various performances in a pool instead of in chairs. At the same time on the same day, the “2018 BeFM Expat DJ Contest” will be held at Gwangalli Beach. You can also watch Jazz performances at Gwangalli Beach at 6 p.m. on August 3. On August 4, the Night Race in Busan will kick off at Gwangalli Beach at 7 p.m. During the race, you will be able to enjoy the views of Gwangan Bridge, the night sea and the skyline of Busan.

HUMPHREYS HAPPENINGS - AUGUST 2018
TONGYEONG HANSAN BATTLE FESTIVAL The 57th Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival will kick off August 10 and run to August 14 at 328, Tongyeonghaean-ro, Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. The Hansan Battle was the biggest victory of the Joseon Navy in the war against the Japanese during the Imjin War. In Tongyeong, a festival honoring Admiral Yi Sun Shin’s achievements is held every summer on the actual day of the Hansan Battle.
Festival Origin
The Imjin War started with an invasion in 1592 and lasted for seven years. In the early days of the war, Korea was defeated by Japan during battle repeatedly. However, the naval forces led by Admiral Yi Sun Shin played a major role in changing the unfavorable situation of Korea by winning the Great Battle of Hansan. Although the number of Korean ships was ridiculously small compared to Japan’s, Admiral Yi won
using the geography of Hansan Island to his strategy. A small celebration that the citizens of Tongyeong started to honor Admiral Yi Sun-shin has now become a big festival.
The Main Programs
One of the main points of the festival is visiting the historical site of Hansan battle, which is reproduced based on historical research. Reenactors dressed in the uniform of the Joseon Navy and equipped with period-correct weapons will march with the Korean Navy military band. At sea, a maritime parade is held using 40 ships. In addition, there are many interesting programs related to the sea such as a canoe competition. Learn Korean History in Tongyeong and enjoy a festival suitable for summer.
